3 The Choke Rod page 3 President's Brunch Sunday January 14, Half Moon Bay This year the President's Brunch will be at Cameron's Restaurant and Inn in Half Moon Bay. The inn was built over 100 years ago and has at one time or another been home to bootleggers, hijackers, ladies of the night, the U.S. Army, and other blood letters and bad men. There have been at least two murders in the Inn and host of shots fired. However, today the Inn is family and dog friendly and known for its British Pub decor and its moderately priced menu. They have over 52 bottled varieties of beer and 19 beers on draft. There are 24 hours in a day and 24 beers in a case. Coincidence... maybe. We will meet at Crystal Springs Reservoir at the usual meeting place, a dirt turn out adjacent to the reservoir. Coming from either direction on Highway 280 take the Highway 92 Exit to Half Moon Bay. Look for us near the last intersection (signal light) before you cross the reservoir. There will be a running board breakfast beginning at 9:30 am. At 10 am we will travel on to Half Moon Bay. It will be a slow ride with some short little diversions down Main Street in Half Moon Bay and then onto Highway 1 and then a short sprint to Cameron's for Brunch at 11 am. St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival Saturday March 17 The 167th Annual St. Patrick s Day Parade in San Francisco is a well established event with historic ties to the city. The parade itself is a huge draw for attendees from all different demographics and ethnicity. The Festival at City Hall provides a great opportunity for attendees to learn more about Irish history and culture while having fun at the event. A full day of activity is planned for the St. Patrick s Day Festival at Civic Center Plaza and on Grove Street, from Polk to Larkin Streets. The colorful festivities surrounding the parade will showcase Irish culture through live performances and entertainment, arts and crafts exhibitors, food and beverage concessions, children s rides and inflatables, and non-profits booths representing the Irish community. The Festival will take place before, during and after the Parade on Saturday. The Parade begins at 11:30 AM on Saturday at the corner of Second and Market, where more than 5,000 participants from all over the states will reel about with laughter and revelry all the way to City Hall. Join us for this great San Francisco event, which is the largest St. Patrick s Day event west of the Mississippi! 4 The Choke Rod page 4 Gift Bag Stuffing On Thursday December 7 our San Francisco Model A Club participated in the annual Senior Bag Stuffing event. For the last 20 years our friend Jill has been organizing this event. All year long we collect toiletries from hotels, paperback books, and other odds and ends to put in the decorated bags. This year our group gathered at the Boy Scout Office in Palo Alto. The gift bags go to Meals On Wheels, the two Veterans Administration hospitals in the area, and a senior day care facility. This year we gave out 940 gift bags. Our club had a great showing this year. Walter, Barry, Cynthia, Joan, John Bettencourt, and Jenny all attended. There was lots of good food and fun and with many hands working we were fast and efficient. Joan Peterson Christmas Tree Decorating at St. Anne's Home On Sunday December 3 members of the San Francisco Model A Club once again gathered at St. Anne s Home this time to decorate a beautiful 12 foot artifi cial Christmas tree. The tree itself was donated by Scott Williams and Tom Mullins. The decorations were donated and provided by the club, and the labor to decorate the tree was provided by club members Victoria Acosta, Walter Caplan, Ralph Hoffschildt, Charlie Kascal, Barry Kinney, Scott Williams, and Kristine Zaback. Under the direction and guidance of Scott Williams we assembled the tree, top to bottom, one branch at a time. With Scott sitting atop the ladders he brought, giving instructions, we meticulously went about the task of assembling the tree, adding LED lights, and then adding red and silver ornaments to create a spectacular tree in the home s auditorium. When we had completed our task Mother Theresa came in to inspect, and deemed our work exemplary. The home has since added a manger scene on the stage of the auditorium, making the room a perfect place to celebrate the joys of Christmas. 5 The Choke Rod page 5 Brave the Bay On Saturday December 2 club members Victoria Acosta, Walter Caplan, Gunard Mahl, Ralph Hoffschildt, Charlie Kascal, Barry Kinney, and Cynthia Torres met at The Buena Vista for our traditional early morning breakfast, served by offi cers from the San Francisco Police Department. Following our meal and several Irish coffees Club President Barry Kinney presented the club's $500 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation at Aquatic Park in the presence of our old friend and now retired SFPD Sergeant Bob Guinan and Police Chief William Bill Scott. 6 The Choke Rod page 6 Christmas Banquet Christmas at Val s was our biggest Club meeting of the year in terms of attendance. It was also one of the warmest and most cheerful. Room and fabulous table decorations once again by Jenny and Joan brightened the room and set the tone. Once again Jenny and Joan amazingly came up with an array of great raffl e prizes and individual gifts to club members. Our sincere thanks to Joan Peterson, Jenny Jump, and Al Thomas and John Bettencourt for all their help and for their raffl e and gift contributions. Needless to say, no one went home empty handed. And again this year our Santa, Victor Garcia in real life, neatly trimmed hand and foot in his traditional red suit, distributed the gifts with the help of his elves, Jenny and Joan. Santa s fi rst gift presentations were to little Ethan Mahl, now a charming and remarkably well-behaved three year old, and his little sister Eva our youngest Club members. Ethan and Eva are the son and daughter of Jonathan and Gabriella Mahl and grandson of Gunard and Jeanine Mahl. We joyously acknowledged the attendance of the entire Kinney/Savio family as well as a number of members and guests. The great meal was followed by our traditional holiday dessert cake from Mazzetti s Bakery in Pacifi ca. The party concluded with the raffl e and then we all headed home with family and friends, our gifts, and our memories of the 2017 Christmas Banquet at Val s. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. Photos in the top row by Cynthia Torres, all other photos by Scott Williams Walter Caplan

8 The Choke Rod page 8 Dr. Kinney Will See You Now 50 Years of Brightening Our Bite By Richard May Businesses come and go on 24th Street, but one business located in the heart of the commercial strip has been serving the public for nearly 50 years. Dr. Barry Kinney, D.D.S., opened his dental offi ce at th St., between Noe and Sanchez streets, in 1968, right after he graduated from the University of the Pacifi c School of Dentistry on Webster Street. He and his wife, Coragene Savio, bought the 1896 Victorian house on 24th street and set up shop. Coragene was still in dental school, but after she graduated in 1969, they became partners in dental practice, as well as in marriage. At fi rst, they left the house as it was because, Kinney says, "there was not a lot of money." The front bedroom became the patient reception area, and the living room and dining rooms became dental treatment offi ces. Later, as the practice began to succeed, the Kinney-Savios modernized and expanded their offi ces to the up to date space now available for patient care Dr. Kinney has a funny story about moving into the neighborhood. He was out front, painting the façade of the building himself, when three dark-suited gentlemen appeared on the sidewalk behind him. They introduced themselves as emissaries from the local merchants association and announced that the group planned to oppose Kinney's new business because, "We don't want any topless nightclubs here." Twenty-fourth Street had gone into decline, and our civic fathers were trying to prevent it from getting any worse. Dr. Kinney swore to them that he had no plans to operate a topless dental practice. A Family of Dentists 24th Street Fixture Barry Kinney, D.D.S., operates out of airy offi ces that make good use of light, stained glass, and murals. Photo by BeverlyTharp Why did he choose Noe Valley? Since Kinney is an Irish name and Noe Valley was an Irish neighborhood, you might think that was the reason but you'd be thinking wrong. His father-in-law already operated a dental offi ce out of a Victorian on Church Street which his brother-in-law and sister-in-law still run so it seemed like a good idea to the newlyweds to take a similar tack. And Kinney isn't 100 percent Irish anyway. He's also a registered member of the Chickasaw tribe. And it wasn't just his father-in-law who was a dentist. Kinney married into a whole family of dentists. His wife's grandfather, father, mother, uncle, sister, and brother were dentists, and new generations of dentists have graduated since. One, Dr. Jocelyn Skelley, Dr. Savio's niece, has joined the Kinney-Savio practice on 24th Street. You might think all of these dentists would make for lots of shoptalk at family gatherings like Thanksgiving, but Dr. Kinney says, "We have a rule: don't talk about dentistry." In most families, it's religion or politics that's taboo. Outlaws Have Teeth Too Over the years, Kinney has cared for the teeth of some pretty interesting patients. Two famous ones were Emily and Bill Harris. They were members of the Symbionese Liberation Army and notorious in 1975 for abducting and converting newspaper heiress Patty Hearst into a bank robber. As a patient, "Emily was just a regular person," said Kinney. "Bill, on the other hand, had that wild eyed look. He made you feel uncomfortable. He never was any trouble, though."

9 The Choke Rod page 9 The pair were referred by a famous San Francisco criminal attorney, who shall remain nameless. He was a patient of Dr. Kinney's, and sent a number of his clients to the dental offi ce to have their choppers worked on. Asked if that helped their cause, Dr. Kinney explained it was always post-trial. That meant they likely won their case. Otherwise, they would have been in jail. One time, though, a patient was brought to him in chains. The man was an alleged IRA terrorist. He had started his dental treatment with Dr. Kinney and had the right to have it fi nished before he was extradited. Classic Cars Bring a Smile But it hasn't all been teeth and gums over the years. In 1971, three years after he began his dental practice and got married, Kinney happened on a third lifelong interest: classic cars. A neighbor owned a Model A and Model T Ford and frequently asked Kinney to help him work on them. Finally, he decided he might as well buy his own to work on and he did, a 1930 Model A coupe, which he still owns and keeps in a friend's garage. It took him fi ve years to restore. Pursuing this interest, Kinney joined the San Francisco Model A Club 40 years ago. He now serves as its president. The club meets monthly and takes a monthly road trip. They used to travel far afi eld to Canada, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon but, as Dr. Kinney says, both the cars and the drivers got a lot older, so they travel closer to home now. They did trek to Fort Bragg in Mendocino County one time and met a man who had 300 Hudson automobiles parked in a fi eld. Collecting cars "gets to be a disease," Dr. Kinney says, chuckling. Drs. Barry Kinney and Coragene Savio (right), who are partners in marriage as well as in dentistry, recently welcomed Dr. Jocelyn Skelley to their thriving 24th Street practice. Photo by BeverlyTharp Nowadays, the club avoids freeways and bridges. Model A's, even in the best of condition, reach only miles per hour. A line of them might be a road hazard on the Bay Bridge or Interstate 80. They toodle mainly to places on the Peninsula but sometimes venture as far south as Santa Cruz or Monterey. Wherever they go, the cars gamer lots of attention. "We get lots of hoorahs," Kinney says with satisfaction. Kinney is not a proselytizer, but if you're interested in joining the SF Model A Club, he says you don't have to own one. "You just have to be interested in them." Interestingly enough, a third of the members, including Dr. Kinney, own classic Ford Thunderbirds. As a teenager in the 1950s, he always wanted a T-bird. Finally, fi ve years ago, he got one, a 1957 model. It resides at his home in Diamond Heights. Dr. Kinney has considered, over the years, holding a car show of classic automobiles in Noe Valley but is reluctant to inconvenience residents and businesses by closing off streets. With the opening of the Noe Valley Town Square, however, he's discussing mounting a smaller car show at that location with the town square committee. Stay tuned! Brush Twice a Day What with car tinkering and being 76 and nearly 50 years in business, you might think Dr. Kinney would be planning to retire, but he's defi nitely not. That will be good news to his many loyal patients, one of whom this writer knows was getting pretty nervous. He says, however, that he will reduce his offi ce hours next year to three days a week Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Doctors are not always happy to dispense free medical advice, but Dr. Kinney obligingly gave our readers three basic tips for good dental health. One, brush your teeth twice a day. Two, reduce the amount of sugary foods you eat. And three, visit your dentist regularly for a cleaning and exam. That way, problems can be handled before they become a nuisance. After all, just like a car, your mouth needs periodic maintenance to make it to classic status. Reprinted from The Noe Valley Voice, Volume XLI, No. 10, December 2017

10 The Choke Rod page 10 Children & Junior Wear Children's wear changed very little during the fashion era. Styling for children was generally categorized by age groups; infants, toddlers/preschool, boys from age 6-18, girls from age 6-14, and girls from age Infants (newborn to age 2) Easy care fabrics were used just as we do currently. Lightweight fabrics for warmer weather and heavier fabrics for cooler climates were fashioned into adorable little frocks. Smocking, tucks, embroidery, and ruffl es adorned these sweet tiny togs. Layettes looked very much like those of today. Creepers and rompers were worn up to 3 years of age. They were made of silk, linen, lawn, dimity, broadcloth and had hand smocking, stitching and appliques. Toddler/Preschool (age 2-6) Since playing was a dominant activity for this age group, clothing followed this carefree time. Fabrics were both plain and printed. Rompers, a one piece garment, were popular. They generally had elastic or banded legs for girls, and straight legs for boys. Little girl's dresses were short, and worn with bloomers. The dresses frequently fell from the shoulders with tucks, smocking, or embroidery. Boys often wore shorts that buttoned to the shirt made of lightweight fabrics. The "blouse" or shirt could be sleeveless, short sleeved, or with long sleeves. A suit with a matching jacket and short pants, was suitable for boys ages 4 and older. 11 The Choke Rod page 11 Technical Q & A - Part 5 By Jim Cannon Q: Murray Body Tag: I have a 1931 Slant Window Town Sedan made in February and I'm looking for pictures of the Murray body tag numbers of that month. If you have any, or if you know someone who does, can you please them to me. I want to stamp my number and I'd like to see the proper spacing etc. I purchased a Murray plate and it's Yellow. Most of the tags I've seen are black. Do you have any info on this? Richard Coffey, Mansfield, MA A: Richard, I found one picture of a 1931 Murray body tag. I hope that helps you with letter size and spacing. I have seen the Murray plates in yellow on brass. They are also sold as black on zinc. For your Slant Windshield car, it should be the black on zinc plate. The yellow and brass plate were used before the S/W models. Unlike earlier models (when Murray had their own body style number that they stamped onto the yellow plate, after the M) when Murray started producing the S/W Town Sedan, they adopted the Ford body style number as their body style number, too. This is screened on in black, then the body number was stamped after it. This is not the car's engine number; this would be the unique number that Murray got paid from Ford with, as a body was delivered. Q: Roof Molding: Jim, the two -piece steel roof molding for a 1928 Tudor (55A) - Style Rl in the Restoration Guideline book - is sold by Bratton's and others. What is the secret to bending this stuff? I routed out a profi le for the forward bend of the rear piece and of course it buckled at each bend toward the ends. Can the molding be heated and i f so what is the procedure? Any help appreciated. C. M. Gwaltney A: This is a two-piece steel trim piece, where you nail the bottom strip to the roof, and then a metal cover piece snaps over that nail strip. You bend it slowly and partially to begin with. Then you install it starting in the center and work towards the end. Installing each roof nail to about 90% and then bend the moulding a little more and install the next nail. No heat is necessary. Then go back and set the nails. The key to getting the trim halves to snap together is wood that is correctly shaped where it provides stability for the nail strip to remain rigid. There are two great articles in MAFCA's The Tudor Book talking about how to restore a Closed Car top. Many of the things described there should also help you with your Plus, it's a very interesting book to just sit down and read, if you own a Tudor Sedan. You can buy the book in the MAFCA Store at MAFCA.com. Reprinted from The Restorer, March-April 2017
