1 From the President's Pen: Autumn is here! The days are getting shorter and the ants keep trying to move into our house! It s a lovely time of year in the Roseville/Sacramento area, with warm days and cool nights. It seems perfect for more rock collecting or working specimens collected earlier in the year. Its election time again! I m not talking about Governor of California, but the Roseville Rock Roller s Board for There are several vacancies. We are especially in need of a new vice-president, as Bob Oleachea, who has graciously served in that position for many years, has asked for a break! The V-P schedules the monthly speaker, with help from other members and various sources. For members who have not previously served, we would love to have you join us. Its a great way to get to know more about the Roseville Rock Roller organization, and its members, while volunteering a little time to help it run smoothly. New board officers always bring new and different ideas and experiences for the benefit of the group. Its fun and its easy to become involved. Just contact a member of the election committee (Jim Hutchings, Kathy Perry or Diane Killen). I hope to see all of you at the next Educational meeting on October 14, We will have another live auction, with more material from the Doris Nickles collection. Hugh Brady, who will be organizing the event, promises the material will be as great as the June auction. Vice President s Comments: Karla Shannon The Guest Speaker for our Educational Meeting this September was Carollyn Lutton, who presented a wonderful talk with beautiful examples of her hobby and craft work in the field of Silver Crochet. Carollyn explained and demonstrated how some of the tools needed in this hobby can be made from everyday common items. She answered the many questions about the making of her tools, and offered handout instructions on how to do Silver Crochet items. We couldn t have known it, by the wonderful presentation that Carollyn gave, but she mentioned that this was her first live presentation before a crowd in this special hobby. We all thought she was excellent and hope to have her give another talk and demonstration to our group in the future. Robert E. Oleachea EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR OCTOBER 14, 2003 The October Educational Program will be the last of this years programmed Rock Auctions. The Club still has many nice items for auction, including those from the Doris Nickles collection. Our Auctioneer, Hugh Brady, says we have adequate material and we do NOT request members to donate material. Save those wonderful items for next year s auctions. A Show and Tell table will also be set up for those of you who care to bring in and show your latest finds. Refreshments will be served. A short business meeting will include Board Members replacement selections. The Nominating Committee needs help from Club Members to fill the vacant Board Positions, either by volunteering or nominating someone. So let s have a good turnout for the Rock Auction and Board Member Selection. Robert E. Oleachea 1

A light tap with your hand will separate them. via Chip & Lick 6/01 via Michigan Gem News 8/01 If you have a thick slab that you would like to slice in two and keep the cut parallel to an existing face, first clamp a junk rock in the vise and cut it. Without unclamping the junk rock, clean the face of the cut and glue the good thick slab to the junk rock. This process may be a little slow and require that the thick slab be clamped to the junk rock while the glue dries, but the resulting cut through the thick slab will be exactly parallel to the original slab face. Note: In saws that use oil, use a water-soluble glue and in saws that use water, use a glue that can be dissolved in acetone. 7 VOLUME 43, No. 10 THE ROLLIN ROCK OCTOBER 2003 Which Gems Are Of Organic Origin? by Patricia Roebuck Pearl, Coral, Amber, and Jet are the four organic gems. Although they contain calcium carbonate, a mineral substance, Pearls are the product of certain mollusks whose secretions allay the discomfort of an irritation caused by disease, a parasite, or a foreign particle. The result is the "Queen of Gems" formed inside the protective mantle that surrounds the soft parts of the animal's body, within the shell. Coral is the accumulated skeletal material of tiny marine animals called polyps, which live in branching colonies. Extracting calcium carbonate from the water, they deposit it in their tissues and build their framework of hollow tubes, which remain after their death. Red Coral Whereas Pearl and Coral are of animal origin, Amber and Jet are derived from plants. Amber is the fossil resin of ancient coniferous trees. These trees flourished during the Oligocene Epoch of the Tertiary Period-nearly 40 million years ago, and were a species of pine, Pinus succinifer. Most properly speaking, Amber is a fossil resin containing Succinic Acid. Hundreds of species of insects and other invertebrates of the Oligocene Age are found beautifully preserved in Amber, caught in the sticky sap as it dripped down the bark of trees. Jet is a compact black variety of lignite coal. Lignite is the lowest rank of coal, having been least changed. The best quality of Jet is velvety black. All coal has a plant ancestry, having formed from the remains of ancient vegetation. During many centuries the vegetation thrived and died. Progressive changes of heat and pressure carried these plants through peat, then to lignite, which we know as Jet. Jet was most popular during the Victorian Era and was used mainly in mourning jewelry. The above information was taken from "1001 Questions Answered About the Mineral Kingdom" by Richard M. Pearl and "Precious Stones" by Bauer. via Arkansas Rockhound News 1/01, via The Rock Collector 2/01 October s Birthstone: Opal Doublets and Triplets Opal doublets and opal triplets are manufactured by fusing a dark backing to a thin slice of natural opal; in the case of triplets, a clear dome is also added. An opal doublet is a slice of gem opal fused onto a piece of dark backing material (usually dark potch). The dark backing enhances the brilliance of the opal, giving it an appearance similar to black opal. An opal doublet can allow you to own a beautiful opal gemstone for far less than the cost of an equivalent solid black opal. An opal triplet has three layers. Gem opal (usually a very thin slice) is sandwiched between a piece of dark backing material and a cap of transparent quartz. The transparent cap protects the opal layer and adds depth to the triplet. A solid opal is more valuable than a doublet of similar color, pattern, brilliance and size; and an opal doublet is more valuable than an opal triplet of similar appearance. From 7
