Dick Pankey, Ph dickpankey@juno.com Cold Spring Granite Quarry Trip The trip to Cold Spring Granite Quarry was a success, 24 members attended. The tour began with a short video explaining about the company and their products. We were able to see some equipment working on various granite products. The company processes granite from all parts of the world, mostly Brazil and the US. The most colorful Granite comes from Brazil. We were allowed to go into the quarry to see how the Granite is quarried and slabbed using wire rope and Carborundum to cut the stone. Some of the wire ropes are several miles long to allow for faster cutting. They were cutting a single slab for NASA that was 13 feet wide by 40 feet long, weight 146,000 pounds. After the tour we dined in Raymond at the deli and then took the back road to Merced, collecting chastolite crystals and looking at the old copper smelter on the way. The trip was very successful. -Al Troglin Photos by: Al Troglin & Bud McMillin

6 MLMS Ghost Sheet 8 MARCH 10 & 11, 2007 Be sure to mark your calendars! With less than four months until Show Time 07 there are still many things remaining to be done. Four months sounds like a long time until you think of all that happens between now and March 10 th like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Quartzsite and Tucson. You may have heard the rumor that we were going to have a Triceratops and T-Rex head at the show. Unfortunately they will not be available, but we are working on something even bigger and better and will let you know more when all details have been completed. Several people have already stepped forward and volunteered to be booth and project chairmen and others have taken projects home to complete. To them we say thank you! There is still quite a bit that can be done well in advance of the show, so if you see something on the list that you can help with, please be sure to contact one of us. Please be thinking about finishing up the items you are making for the Raffle as well as contacting local merchants for donations. The last Raffle was VERY successful and with all the MLMS talent out there we are sure that the next one will be even bigger. Security is needed on Friday night. This will require sleeping in the building. (Couples need not apply) Several people have inquired about purchasing club vests and we would like to make them available to the Junior Rockhounders also. We have the patterns, and fabric, but need someone to sew them. Bud and I recently attended the CFMS meeting and want to tell you that your show has made a name for itself. We were approached by many people from all over California, Nevada and Arizona who said they were going to be sure to attend the MLMS show because they wanted to see what MLMS had done. We told them what made the show so special was our members because they put so much of themselves into the show. Way to go MLMS! Your efforts have put the Turlock show on the map! If there is something that you can help with or if you have questions or suggestions, please give us a call. Thank you for supporting your show! Bud and Terry McMillin, Show Chairmen or terry.mcmillin@yahoo.com --WANTED-- Raffle items Wheel of Fortune Chairman a great place for your children or grand children to help. Projector chairman to run videos in the lecture hall between speakers and to make sure that all is working for the lecture. Tumbled stones- lots of them Geodes, uncut for the new geode cutting booth.
