1 Rock Talk White Mountain Gem & Mineral Club P.O. Box 3504 Show Low, Arizona Volume 19 Issue 4 April 2016 President's Letter Welcome to the club, new member, Kurt Augustine, owner of Harvest Moon Antiques & Indian Trading Post in Pinetop! Kurt s store will reopen Memorial Day weekend, (for the summer season). In addition to the usual trading post type items, Kurt also has fossils and minerals for sale. Kurt will be providing a gift certificate for our Show Raffles. Club friends, Sandy and Jim Jacobs have opened a new rock store, Pick Me Rock Store in Overgaard. It is located in the Black Bear Plaza on 260. In addition to rocks, they are offering lapidary classes and supplies. They are going to be vendors at our show. Also, this is a reminder that Tony Poiriez, club member, owns Earth s Upper Crust in Lakeside. WMGMC members can receive a discount with every purchase. Tony has completely remodeled the store. He is not open full time yet, but you can get his phone number off the Club Roster if you would like to meet him there. He, too, will be providing a gift certificate for the Show Raffles. It is great for all of us to have places to shop for fine specimens as well as supplies without having to leave the area. The May Rock Talk will be Karen s last edition. Bob Fern has agreed to continue as our Editor beginning with the June issue. Although Karen will be helping with our show, the May meeting will be her last one with us as a result of her move out-of-state. Please join me in wishing her all the best on her new adventure. Thanks to all of you that joined our club this year and to all who renewed their memberships. The fact that we are having our 19 th Gem and Mineral show in May is testament to the willingness of everyone to step up to ensure we have a great club and show, year after year. We have a short-fall in the number of rocks that we can put out for the children to select 12 of each. We have too many agates/chalcedony rocks that have been collected at the claims. We have some rough petrified wood and polished river rocks, but could use more. We need a variety of stones (approximately 200 of each). If anyone has some to donate, whether polished or rough, please call Jeannie Arneklev at The size of the rocks need to be small enough to fit in the "cup" of the egg crates. 5 April 2016 Rock Talk Page 5 April 2016 Club Field Trip Our field trip for the month of April, though not a collecting outing, should be both entertaining and educational, as we step back in time to visit the Rock Art Ranch, located near Winslow. The ranch is on the site of what was the Hashknife Ranch, one of the largest ranches in early Arizona history, and was also on the route of the Pony Express. The ranch is a collection of memorabilia from that time, plus there is a large collection of Indian pottery. After two hours of enjoying our tour at the ranch, our host,, Brantley Baird, will lead our caravan out to a spot along Chevelon Canyon to view the vast amount of petroglyphs that date as far back as the Anasazi culture. It is believed to be the largest collection of petroglyphs found in North America. There is also a shelter there, where you may enjoy lunch. You need to provide your lunch as well as sun protection, good shoes and photographic equipment. We will meet in the parking lot of Basha's in Taylor close to the Pizza Hut with departure at 8:30am on Saturday, April 30th. This is a good place to park your car if you would like to carpool. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Our tour starts at 10 AM at the ranch and it is about an hour drive to the ranch. There is a fee to visit the ranch and canyon of $25, but if 20 or more attend the price is reduced to $20. For further info, or to sign-up, Raffles - May Show Last year we had a record number of donated items for our Show. This year, we are scaling back a bit. Blue Thompson has agreed to visit businesses in the Show Low area. But the task of getting donations should not fall on 1 or 2 people. Please help out to get some nice donations for our raffles from any businesses in your respective areas. It is customary that before asking for a donation, you present them with a copy of our Donation Request letter. I have those available, and if you need some, let me know. I can either you a copy, or I can provide you with copies at our next meeting. While you are at it, please ask businesses if you can hang one of our show posters at their place of business. The deadline for obtaining donations is May 15. Please call me as you acquire donations, so I can update my records. Posters will be available at the May meeting. Related to Raffles, Brookie Embry has raffle tickets that we are asking you sell to friends, families, strangers, or yourself. Selling raffle tickets has been an important part of our show income and we need to sell them. You will be given an envelope at the next meeting, containing raffle tickets to sell. The monies and tickets can be given to Brookie the morning of the show. Thanks to a donation by Ted Schultz, we now have a wooden tumbler to roll our sold raffle tickets in that will help the process. ROAD CLEAN-UP Road Clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, May 14 th, 9:00am. Please put it on your calendars and plan to help out. Meet at the K-Mart Parking lot in the area next to Highway 60. A safety briefing, photo shoot and sign up will occur before we caravan to the clean-up area. Our designated area is between mile marker on US 60. This usually takes about an hour for the clean-up. Please wear sensible shoes, gloves and a hat. Water will be provided. We have trash pick up sticks, and safety vests and garbage bags (provided to us by ADOT). All help in the clean-up is appreciated. Ruth King and Brookie Embry Wyoming or Bust Plans are under way to take a trip to the world famous Kemmerer, Wyoming Fossil Beds, June Digging would be at the Warfield Quarry (aka Fossil Safari) under the direction of our club member, George Putnam, Quarry Manager. The regular price for a half day of digging (4 hours) is $75 per person. If we can round up 10 or more diggers, the price would be about $55 for each half day (children are ½ price). Whatever the number of attendees, George will get us a good price. Everyone: Please help out! Rose For RVers, there is a place just below the quarry that you can boondock (bring your own water for the RV). There are several motels in nearby Kemmerer. The weather will be hot, so provide shade via an E-Z Up, and SPF 48 or higher is recommended along with other usual items such as hats, water, gloves, etc. The Quarry provides all tools you need to split rocks. Dogs are allowed in the Quarry but must be on a leash at all times. Rick has information on motels in Kemmerer. In addition, there may be other nearby opportunities for collecting some blue petrified wood and fossil turitellas (gastropods). If you are interested in attending, please contact Rick Olson at Reservations are needed as this is a busy place during their dig season and space may be limited. For additional details, check out Warfield s website:
