It s 2019 and we begin our new year with the highest membership level ever, dynamic speakers on their way, two big Gem and Mineral shows to attend, field trips and classes to learn new skills. However, the most important benefit of your membership is the comradery waiting for you to experience by mingling with those that share your passion. Passion elevates the soul, inspires and motivates. Don t ignore it, come share it! and experiences to share. Volunteer, you re our most vital ingredient for success. Life is too short, there s no time to just sit. Be bold, be brave, reach across the aisle, shake a hand, invite others to car pool to shows, field trips or to your home to make stuff. When you do you just might discover a new friend. My personal joy, during my tenure as your President, is witnessing budding friendships among you that have endured. It s not easy when your older, but it happens and enriches our lives. And, it s a big part of what we are all about. Whether you re releasing your creative energy making one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry or embracing the child within us all by treasure hunting for those shimmering crystals lying just below the ground, there s something for everyone to do. You can take notes when speakers identify locations in Arizona to explore for the future. Bring specimens you can t identify and will tell you what you have. Win a raffle, bid in the silent auction, buy lapidary equipment at rock bottom prices. Or, just visit our clubs private mining claim in Camp Verde. Remember participation is the greatest reward for mind and body. Social members should engage those who are shy. Those that are shy have valuable skills

2 Sedona Gem and Mineral Club Meeting Tuesday, January 15 By Evelina Dunton The Sedona Gem and Mineral Club will meet January 15, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sedona Public Library. Our featured speaker will be Dr. Kennard Bork whose presentation is Noteworthy Geosites of Northern Arizona". It will be an illustrated Power- Point commentary on places in Northern Arizona that will have significant geologic interest to our club members. By the time he was in high school, Ken s interest in science was strong but he also wanted to know more about Earth History. He followed a career in biology at the suggestion of one of his teachers. It dawned on him that paleontology incorporated biology and history of the planet in one super-interesting field. He was a geology major in college and then pursued a Ph.D. in paleontology, with the goal of teaching at the university level. His research also included the history of geology. Two sabbaticals in Paris allowed him to look into the evolution of thought in France and England leading to the work of Charles Darwin and his Origin of Species (1859). After retiring in 2013 he and his wife (Katherine Camille Odell) moved to Sedona where he continues his passion of geology and paleontology. Ken was a geology major earning a B.A. degree at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana; a M.A. degree in geology/paleontology from Indiana University. Bloomington, Indiana; and a Ph.D. in eology/paleontology from Indiana University. His offices and awards and publications are too numerous to list. We are looking forward to this special presentation. Dr. Kenneth Bork The Club meeting will also feature member displays, closing with the monthly raffle of great rocks and mineral specimens. 3 The January Birthstone: Garnet Club members Pat Tucci and Zelda Bailey (GEOdyssey, LLC) will be participating in the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show this year. We are in booth #223, which is in row 200 in the back on the right as you enter the show. We will be featuring minerals from Bulgaria (sphalerite, galena, quartz), Morocco (azurite, vanadinite), Namibia (amethyst, aquamarine, tourmaline, enhydro quartz), China (fluorite, calcite, quartz), and other locations in the US and around the world.. We will also have a good selection of fossils, including fossil fish from Wyoming and Megalodon shark teeth from South Carolina. Show us your Sedona Gem and Mineral Club badge and get a 20% discount!

4 Gem and Mineral Shows Throughout the Region! January and February Field Trips! By Pat McMahan ( ) and Dave Maple ( ) In January and February our field trips will be to Quartzsite and Tucson, respectively. Quartzsite QIA Rock Show. January 16 thru January 20. There are several hundred rock dealers selling just about every type of rock and rock and jewelry related items imaginable. This is the best rockhound show of the year and a rockhound mecca. If you go to one show during the year, this is the one. Our Club s own Pat McMahan will have 3 booths adjoining Space 420 at this show conveniently located next to the access road where you can safely drop off your heavy treasurers and drive up to the booth later and pick them up. Pat will have an ice chest full of cold drinks and a place to sit in the shade or lay down in his nice trailer and rest after the rigors of shopping. Pat will give you directions to other shows and other information. Hotels are available in Blythe and Parker, Arizona. Check out the QIA website for further details: Tucson Gem and Mineral Show Field Trip. Feb. 13 Thru Feb. 15. Pat McMahan is guiding Club members on our annual Tucson Show Field trip. He will direct our members to some of the best rock shows in Tucson and some great restaurants. Of the approximate 43 shows we could go to, Pat has picked the shows with the best cross section of material of interest to most of our members. He has cut through the maze of highend faceted stone shows, bead shows and other specific interest shows to take us to those show for rockhounds. ALERT!!! Our special $79.00 rate special for our hotel has been extended until January 15. These rooms are almost twice that cost during the shows so this is a good deal. Yo Ho More money to spend on rocks!!! Call the Best Value Inn now to reserve your room with your credit card. Tell them you are with the Sedona Gem and Mineral Club to get the special rate. Best Value Inn will be on your right on the northwest corner of Park Ave. and Benson Hwy. Arrive Wednesday hopefully early enough to get your feet wet and do a little shopping. Dinner will be at 6:00 pm. Meet at the hotel lobby at 5:20 p.m. for a brief orientation. Weʼll be having yummy Chinese food for dinner at CHOP STIX Restaurant. ( ) We will caravan from the hotel leaving about 5:50 p.m.. Pat McMahan will furnish FREE directories and other free guide books which give information about the shows. The directories will be available for you to pick up at Amy Koba s house at 85 Ross Rd. (89A to Northview south 1 block to Ross then west on Ross). They will be outside by her front door, Friday, Feb. 8. Take one of each of the different guides. This is the biggest and best rock, mineral and fossil show in the world. People travel many thousands of miles to come to this event. Itʼs almost in our backyards. (about 3 and one half hourʼs drive from Sedona). Guaranteed lots of fun.
