1 NOC GEM & MINERAL SOCIETY NEWS Vol, 28 No. 10 November 2009 President s Message by Don Warthen We just returned from a great field trip to the Calico area. There were four different clubs present and 9 members represented the NOC. This was a great trip with great weather; lots of rocks, good people and all had a great time. This months meeting will be our annual auction. We will forgo our regular business meeting. We will start the silent auction with refreshments at 6:45 pm and the live auction will start at about 7:15 pm. Remember we still need items for the auction. Arrive early; we should have a large group on hand. We will be collecting items for the needy at our meetings, so please bring nonperishable food items or personal items such as toiletries and unwrapped toys. The wire wrap classes have been a big success. All the classes are completely filled and we still have a waiting list. One reason for this great success is the great instructors we have, Fran, Don E., Loretta, and Ofelia. You may have heard about some of the problems we have had with the 2010 show, and there have been some rough spots but it look like everything is coming together and I think the show is going to be a big success. We still have a lot of work to do and can use all the help we can get. If you want to get involved, see Chairman Mike, at our next meeting. Yolanda has put together a great package for this year s Christmas/Awards Banquet on December We will have a Board meeting on November 17 th at 6:30 pm at the Community Center for all people interested in setting the course for next year. We will be organizing next year s committees and some of the programs we want to undertake next year. Happy Thanksgiving! 3 November Birthstone: Citrine, Color: Yellow Gold by Ofelia Warthen November s gemstone, Citrine, is as warm as a Van Gogh painting of sunflowers. The name Citrine comes from an old French word, citrine, meaning lemon. One of the more rare forms of quartz, this gemstone ranges in color from the palest yellow to a dark amber named Madeira because of its resemblance to the red wine. Perhaps because of its scarcity, there is little mention of Citrine used as a gemstone prior to the first century B.C. The Romans were thought to be the first to wear the yellow quartz, crafting it into cabochon, or highly polished but unfaceted cuts of stone set into jewelry. Citrine became more popular during the Romantic Period, when artisans often favored these warm colored gems to enhance gold jewelry. Citrine, like all forms of quartz, was believed to have magical powers and was worn as a talisman against evil thoughts and snake venom. It was also considered to have medicinal properties and was commonly used as a remedy for urinary and kidney ailments. Sister stone to the purple quartz known as Amethyst, Citrine crystals are found in igneous metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. It is believed that some Citrine may have actually begun as Amethyst, but heat from nearby molten rock changed it to the yellow form of quartz. Citrine is known to change color when subjected to heat and is routinely heated in the jewelry-making process to intensify its color. For this same reason, though, this gemstone should not be left in direct sunlight for a long time because it will permanently alter the color. Most Citrine is mined in Brazil, but other sources of the quartz are Bolivia and Madagascar. Education Report by Ofelia Warthen October was a great eventful month for the education committee. We finished another advanced wire wrap class with 15 people attending. They almost finished a beautiful pendent complete with prongs. Again, our elite teachers, Fran Swanston and Don Escbauch, taught the class. Our thanks to our helpers; Jay Valle, Don Warthen, Kathy Escbauch & Loretta. We received a request from two teachers at Brea Country Hills Elementary School asking for an earth science presentation. A teacher went to our website and found us. Don Escbauch was gracious enough to be in charge of the presentation together with our Professor Dave Swanston. They both taught a wonderful earth science class to approximate 48 fourth and fifth grade students. The teachers were so delighted by these wonderful teachers with their presentation and display of fossils, rocks and other wonderful specimens. All the kids were asking questions. It was very exciting. The teachers look forward in having us do this again in the future. Thank you, Don E. and thank you Dave! Thank you Don Ogden for taking pictures. Our Education Committee met October 22 nd to discuss future classes. We have arranged through the La Habra Community Center to hold classes on January 26, February 23 and March 23, More information on classes to follow. A gift of Citrine is symbolic for hope and strength. With its sunny brightness, this gemstone is ideal for helping anyone to get through the tough times in life! NOC News - November
