1 HSEMATTERS A Keppel Group Health, Safety & Environment publication Issue Safety affirmations The Group won 32 awards at the 2013 Workplace Safety & Health Awards Keppel Group scored 32 Workplace Safety & Health (WSH) Awards conferred by the WSH Council and Singapore s Ministry of Manpower on 30 July The awards affirmed Keppel s continued drive and performance in safety. Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) clinched 26 awards in the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) category. Satya Ranjan Das Biswa Nath Das, a project supervisor from Keppel FELS, was also awarded for his leadership in guiding workers under his charge. Keppel Land achieved the title of WSH Developer for the second consecutive year. Keppel Singmarine, Keppel FMO and Keppel DHCS took home the WSH Performance (Silver) awards for their sound management systems. The WSH Risk Management Award was won by Prime Steelkit. Mr Tong Chong Heong, SED of Keppel Corporation and CEO of Keppel O&M, said, We are very encouraged by WSH Council s recognition of the efforts and performance across our Group. 2 Editorial Shaping up for safety John Birchall The Keppel Group repeated its excellent performance with 32 wins at the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards held on 30 July 2013, organised by Singapore s WSH Council and Ministry of Manpower. This is also Keppel Land s second year winning the WSH Developer Award. At the individual awards level, I would like to commend Satya Ranjan Das Biswa Nath Das, a Superintendent at Keppel FELS, for achieving the WSH Award for Supervisors. More details on Keppel s showing at the WSH Awards can be found on the front page of this issue of HSE Matters. Our strong record for the WSH Awards is a result of our strong safety culture that we have built up over the years. This mindset was affirmed by the Du Pont safety self-assessment exercise that we recently concluded. The results show that our safety culture is consistent across the organisation - Keppel advocates a strong safety culture starting from top management. This three-year exercise has guided us to work on the areas that we can improve. Safety will take the spotlight on 7 October 2013 for Keppelites across the Group with the seventh Group Safety Convention. This year s theme Shaping a Safe Future not only ties in with Keppel Corporation s 45th anniversary theme Shaping the Future, but also reaffirms our efforts and initiatives for The convention is a highly anticipated event for Keppelites as we meet together to share safety best practices, celebrate safety milestones and reflect on how we can enhance our safety culture together. We can be proud of the long way we have come but it cannot be over emphasised that every individual must recognise that he holds the key to shaping a safe future for himself and for those around him. 3 Bubbling with innovation Brimming with ideas for improvement, teams from across the Keppel Group showcased their projects at the annual Safety Innovation Team (SIT) conventions held by various business units in June and July Sixteen teams from Keppel Shipyard competed for the award for best innovative project at the yard s convention on 12 June The winning teams impressed the judges with their fresh ideas. One was the Cable Stripping Tool, a compact and ergonomically designed machine that enables users to strip out cables with minimum effort. Another was the Cable Drum Storage Rack, which provides safe and proper storage of cable drums at the wharf side. Keppel Singmarine had eight teams showcasing their projects on 10 July The Gold award was presented to the team from the Marine Piping System Department. Their project, named EREM (Easy Rotate, Easy Move), reduces the risks in installation of large spools of wires onboard vessels by making it easier to move and rotate the spools using the EREM device. Over at Keppel FELS, eight teams participated, with the piping department team emerging tops with the Gold award for their Auto Hydraulic Hose Installer. The mechanical device uses a hydraulic system to install hoses and eliminates the need for hammering, thus reducing the chances of finger injuries. At Keppel Land, 12 project teams presented their projects on 22 July A total of three Gold, three Silver and two Bronze awards were presented to the teams. Clinching the Gold awards were teams from Ocean Financial Centre, The Luxurie and The Lakefront Residences. The winning projects included emergency-aid equipment which help the rescue of workers who have fallen from height, and a tower crane proximity sensor to guide workers as they operate near blind spots. Keppel Infrastructure held its first SIT convention after its re-organisation, on 2 July 2013, and it was attended by 70 Keppelites. A total of two Gold, one Silver and two Bronze awards were presented to teams for their projects. Teams from Senoko Waste-to- Energy Plant (WTE) and Keppel Seghers Tuas WTE Plant were awarded Gold awards for their projects. One project was a modified furnace centre divider to reduce the need to remove the accumulated waste material, the other project was a leachate injection system to eliminate the need to remove leachate water from sump-pits, which previously exposed workers to potential slips and falls from height. Judges at the conventions included safety personnel from various business units in the Keppel Group. The winners were chosen not only for their impact on safety, but also effectiveness and ease of implementation, among other criteria. 4 Global alignment With a network of 20 yards around the world, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) is constantly improving its safety management across the Group. Learning at Caspian yards Inter-yard cross-audits serve to help uphold the quality of maintenance of major equipment at Keppel O&M s overseas yards. During the workshops, yard managers, supervisors and junior officers gathered to learn about safe practices at the workplace. Mr Yong Chee Min, GM, HSE of Keppel O&M, spoke on various topics including Keppel O&M s Safety Journey & Initiatives, Challenges on Building a Safety Culture in the Yard, and Roles of a Supervisor in Safety. They also help to recognise good practices and identify areas for improvement. The knowledge can be shared across the yards, thus aligning safety practices and raising overall standards at Keppel O&M s global yards. At Keppel s yards in the Caspian region, Keppel O&M cross-audit exercise was carried out at Caspian Shipyard Company (CSC) in Azerbaijan in July Keppel O&M s cross-business unit audit team conducted a yard tour at Caspian Shipyard Company in Azerbaijan to understand and evaluate its safety practices The audit team also took the opportunity to visit Baku Shipyard and observed how guidelines were implemented in the new and developing yard. Singapore s Keppel FELS, Keppel Shipyard and Keppel Singmarine were cross-audited in November The next audits would be held at Keppel Verolme in the Netherlands and Keppel AmFELS in the United States. Sharing in the Philippines Over in the Philippines, Keppel O&M s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team conducted workshops at Keppel Subic Shipyard and Keppel Batangas Shipyard between 8 and 12 July Apart from conducting safety workshops, Keppel O&M s HSE team also conducted walkabouts at Keppel Subic Shipyard and Keppel Batangas Shipyard to understand the conditions of the yards 4

5 Port of call Mr Au Yong Kong Seng, GM of Wuhu Sanshan Port, led the workers in taking a pledge and signing their names on the banner to affirm their commitment to safety Rallying to the call of safety, Wuhu Sanshan Port, an associate of Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation, located along Yangtze River in China, held a series of activities to bolster safety. Being a river port, it may be exposed to seasonal gale and storms. During strong winds, quay cranes and shipping containers may topple over, posing a danger to property and staff. Therefore, it is important that staff respond systematically and quickly, so that personnel and property are protected. The port conducted a gale storm exercise on 31 May Once the storm alert is received, the team is split into two groups one to anchor quay cranes; the other group to transport sand bags to the wharf area and stack them on the quay cranes railings to stabilise the cranes. The quay cranes are further locked into position with steel ropes, and power supply to the cranes switched off. Through the exercise, staff became more familiar with Workers at the port responded quickly to stabilise the quay cranes with sand bags and steel ropes during a gale and storm exercise the procedures and are better prepared. At a separate event, to mark China s 12th Annual Safe Production Month, Wuhu Sanshan Port held a pledge-taking ceremony on 20 June Despite the summer heat, staff from all departments at the port turned up in full force to affirm their commitment. GM of Wuhu Sanshan Port, Mr Au Yong Kong Seng, led the team in taking a pledge. He emphasised that safety is one of Keppel s core values and is also the responsibility of everyone. Following the pledge, all the staff also signed their names on a banner to ink their commitment towards a zero-incident workplace at the port. The ceremony was followed by fun and educational activities, such as quizzes, tips on prevention of heat stroke, and basic fire-fighting skills. 5

6 Walking the talk Across the Keppel Group, senior management visit worksites and facilities regularly to ensure safe practices are in place. They also use the visits to get feedback to improve decision-making on enhancing safety. On 16 September 2013, Keppel Land s Management Safety Committee (MSC) visited Leighton Asia s Strive for LIFE Knowledge & Skills Training Centre in Hong Kong. The site visit promoted learning and provided insights for Keppel Land MSC members, their main contractors Woh Hup and Tiong Seng, and industry partners. The group also learnt about onsite initiatives, which included measures to prevent heatstroke during the hot summer months. The Strive for LIFE Knowledge and Skills Training Centre was opened in October 2010 and provides classroom sessions and practical training for Leighton Asia s workers. Keppel Land s Management Safety Committee visited Leighton Asia s training centre in Hong Kong Partnership and excellence The sixth instalment of Keppel Land Annual Consultants and Contractors Health and Safety Meeting was held on 5 July 2013 to provide employees and contractors a platform to share their experiences, knowledge and best practices. The meeting was attended by over 150 Keppelites and contractors. of Industry Capability Building from the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council. He also presented the bizsafe Mentor certificate to Mr Choo Chin Teck, Director of Corporate Services, Keppel Land, in recognition of the company s leadership. In his opening remarks, Mr Ang Wee Gee, CEO of Keppel Land, lauded the project teams for their achievements and reiterated the importance of a safety mindset. He shared, We cannot rest on our laurels. In working towards a zero-incident workplace, we must continually strive to raise the bar on safety. In appreciation of project teams and contractors who have made significant contributions, Safety Recognition Awards were given to the teams from Marina Bay Suites, The Lakefront Residences, The Luxurie and Ocean Financial Centre Phase 2. Gracing the event was Mr Chan Yew Kwong, Director Keppel Land s Annual Consultants and Contractors Health and Safety Meeting saw over 150 employees and contractors come together to exchange safety best practices 6

7 A safe township On 19 July 2013, Tanah Sutera, the management company of Taman Sutera, Keppel Land s integrated township development in Johor, celebrated achieving two million man-hours without lost time incidents for its 18.3-ha site. More than 400 invited guests, staff and workers attended the ceremony, which included sharing sessions and presentation of awards to workers who exemplified outstanding safety practices. During the ceremony, Mr Steven Shum, GM of Tanah Sutera, together with Deputy GMs Mr Koh Moo Hing and Mr Soh Chan Aik, AGM Mr Goh Lak Jin and Safety Manager Mr Lim Ping, also announced the opening of the new Safety and Health Centre located at the workers dormitory. The centre houses rotating exhibitions to provide workers with constant reminders of safety. These exhibits include tips on fire safety and the handling of construction equipment. Mr Goh shared, Working towards a zero-incident environment, we strive for the highest standards in all our operations. This new Safety and Health Centre will help to reinforce our message that safety is everyone s business. In addition, the centre also hosts exhibits with eco-friendly themes such as the 3 R s of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The Tanah Sutera team marked two million man-hours with zero lost time incidents, and held an opening ceremony for the new Safety and Health Centre 7
