3 Editorial When zero is the goal At the recent launch of the National Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Campaign 2015, Guest-of-Honour Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, then-minister for Manpower and current Minister for Social and Family Development, highlighted Keppel as an example of a successful company that embraces the value of WSH and commended our steadfast commitment towards achieving zero injuries in the workplace (see page 12). At the same event, WSH Council unveiled its Vision Zero movement, which aims to develop the mind-set that all workplace injuries and health issues are preventable. in enhancing safety infrastructure, systems, knowledge and skillsets across the Group, an increase of 30% from the year before. Over 60,000 personnel have received training at Keppel Safety Training Centres and Safety Awareness Centres since The Group was also conferred 39 WSH Awards by the WSH Council in 2014, surpassing the 32 awards received previously. Even as a Group with diverse businesses, Keppel continues to work at improving safety standards and practices with several initiatives amongst its management, staff, contractors and subcontractors. Vision Zero strikes a chord at Keppel because its objectives dovetail with our own vision: that everyone who works in our yards, plants, worksites and offices across the globe is able to return home safely every day. Keppel sees the safety and well-being of our employees as critical to our long-term success. In fact, it is an integral part of Keppel s Vision 2020, the Group s holistic development roadmap towards the year At the inaugural Global Keppelites Forum in January 2015, CEO of Keppel Corporation Mr Loh Chin Hua described the Group s Vision 2020 as one that all employees will be proud of and feel a sense of ownership in, leading to a safer, more productive work environment for all. The Keppel Group Safety Convention held annually since 2007 is an important platform for reflecting on lessons learnt and improvements for us to progress on our safety journey. Improved attitudes toward WSH are only meaningful if they translate to practical action on the ground. This is why our convention includes the recognition of Safety Innovation Projects, practical solutions to safety challenges developed and implemented by Keppelites, often together with other stakeholders. While we recognise that we face many challenges on our safety journey as a Group, we are driven by the conviction that with focus and tenacity, we can achieve our vision of zero accidents, zero losses. Vision 2020 galvanises us to continue on the right path. In 2014, Keppel invested $52 million

30 30 Sustaining Growth Spurring Innovations Innovative LNG tug design For its achievements in developing innovative solutions for the marine sector, Keppel Offshore & Marine Technology Centre (KOMtech) was recognised at the biennial Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) held on 21 April The awards was held in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week organised by the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The research and development (R&D) arm of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) received the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award for its design of an Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tug with a 65-tonne bollard pull capacity which can run on both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and diesel fuel. The development of the dual-fuel engine tug design comes at a time when natural gas is rising in importance as an energy resource and alternative marine fuel. KOMtech s focus on LNG solutions is in line with MPA s objective of establishing Singapore as an LNG bunkering port by While a number of companies have been developing LNG fuel gas systems (LFGS) for ships, most designs face technical challenges with more improvements needed to achieve a higher level of safety and fuel efficiency. In 2012, faced with these challenges, KOMtech started to develop an LFGS with a robust LNG vaporiser for marine applications. The fruit of its R&D efforts an innovative and patented LNG vaporiser design which was incorporated into the tug design successfully brings together all the advantages of existing LNG vaporisers in the market. Compared to other LNG vaporisers, KOMtech s system has the additional advantages of having lower capital expenditure and operating costs, and is more compact and safe. KOMtech also incorporated smart designs into its tug to enhance safety and comfort. For instance, the LNG vent and piping are arranged so that the accommodation quarters in the lower deck area are situated away from the potential danger zone. The LNG fuel is carried in containerised, type-c ISOcertified tanks on the main deck, and refuelling can be as simple as replacing the empty tanks with replenished ones. In 2013, KOMtech was conferred the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award for its contributions to the development of feasible solutions in deepwater drilling and production. keppelite Mr Aziz Merchant (left), ED (Deepwater Technology) of KOMtech, receiving the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award on behalf of KOMtech from Mr Lui Tuck Yew (right), Singapore s Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Defence KOMtech was recognised for its achievements in developing innovative solutions for the marine sector, such as its design of an ASD tug (artist impression pictured above) which can run on both LNG and diesel fuel

34 34 Empowering Lives Keeping the blaze at KRC Mr Hoe Eng Hock, MD (Special Projects), Marine Division, Keppel Offshore & Marine, has been a dedicated President of Keppelite Recreation Club since 2010 One is an avid hiker; the other a keen gardener. While their preferred recreational activities may differ, both Mr Hoe Eng Hock and Mr Lim Tow Fok share an appreciation for nature and a belief in the power of recreational activities to bring people together outside of the workplace. Having devoted considerable energy to doing just that as President of Keppelite Recreation Club for the past five years, Mr Hoe, MD (Special Projects), Marine Division, Keppel Offshore & Marine, has handed over the reins to the capable hands of Mr Lim, GM of Property Management and Knowledge Management at Keppel Land. Officially elected President at the KRC Annual General Meeting on 24 April 2015, Mr Lim will keep the KRC torch blazing, driving KRC forward as a dynamic platform for Keppelites across business units to forge strong bonds. Igniting with passion In his three terms as President since 2010, Mr Hoe was passion personified as he led efforts to unite Keppelites through sports and recreational activities. These activities ranged from outings to local fish farms to overseas excursions to Cambodia, Vietnam, Korea, Hong Kong and hikes to mountains in Malaysia and Taiwan. Throughout the varying activities over the years, the man at the helm remained constant with his strong spirit and steady words of encouragement. A lover of the great outdoors, one of Mr Hoe s many passions is hiking. Mr Hoe took it upon himself to organise numerous local and overseas hikes, even arranging for training sessions to prepare participants for hikes which could climb to almost 4,000 metres above sea level. Under his leadership, KRC strengthened its expertise in organising sporting events, which enabled the club to successfully take over the responsibility of organising Keppel s annual Group-wide sports meet, Keppel Games, four years ago from Keppel Scholars.

35 Empowering Lives 35 Mr Hoe shared, Through such recreational activities, you can see the bonds between the participants strengthen right before your eyes even within a short period of time. Teamwork and synergy amongst Keppelites at work as well as at play, coupled with healthy competition, is the reason for the establishment of KRC. With the continued support of top management and the firm commitment from our sub-committees across the business units, KRC will continue to scale greater heights. keppelite Mr Hoe s seemingly endless energy has spurred us to excel in our endeavours, from detailed planning to smooth execution of all the Keppel Games. He has raised the bar for us to continue to organise great events for our fellow Keppelites in the true Can Do! spirit. Clemann Woon, Chairman, Keppel Games Main Organising Committee Receiving the torch Keppelite sat down with KRC s newly appointed President, Mr Lim Tow Fok (LTF) to chat with him about his aspirations for KRC. Q: As you take the reins, what are some of your priorities as you settle into the role? LTF: I look forward to the strong support of the KRC main committee as well as all the game conveners and volunteer organisers, as I work over the next few months to get a clearer overview of all our activities. We definitely want to build on what the members have been enjoying thus far from the sports and recreational scene. With Eng Hock staying on as Senior Adviser of KRC, I am sure that together, the team and I will be well guided into a new phase of growth. During my term as President, I would like to work on measures and systems for our activities to be more sustainable, ensure they do not have any negative impact on Mr Hoe Eng Hock (right), MD (Special Projects), Marine Division, Keppel Offshore & Marine, hands over the Presidency of Keppelite Recreation Club to Mr Lim Tow Fok, GM of Property Management and Knowledge Management, Keppel Land, after five years of dedicated service the environment, and ensure that they contribute to the communities we are in. I understand that some of these changes will take time, but I believe it is possible. Q: How will you leverage KRC to strengthen interbusiness unit bonds across the Group? A: I would like to encourage strong and enthusiastic participation from all business units. One of the key performance indicators I have set for myself is to increase membership numbers. We need to excite more Keppelites from across the Group with more awareness on our activities. One of the ways I see this being done is through roadshows. The new collaborative spaces such as Kloud in Keppel Land and The Exchange at Keppel Corporation are perfect venues for us to bring these roadshows to Keppelites at their workplaces. We will work closely with the various human resources departments across the Keppel units to execute these roadshows. Q: What sports activities will you be taking part in? LTF: (Laughs) I am not very much into sports by nature, but I will most certainly try! I enjoy planting and gardening which can be classified under recreational activities! Q: Any final thoughts to share? A: Eng Hock has set a very high benchmark during his term as President, leaving me now with pretty big shoes to fill. On behalf of KRC, I would like to express my appreciation for his contributions to the rapid growth of the club.

37 Empowering Lives 37 Keppelites take the SEA Games stage While many people find it challenging to fit regular exercise into their schedules, Zoe Seet, Graduate Engineer, Piping (Production), Keppel FELS, and Leow Ting Hao, Assistant Superintendent, Keppel FELS, work out six times a week, with each session lasting at least three hours. Such intense training is part of both Keppelites preparation to represent Singapore at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Singapore from 5 to 16 June Juggling full-time jobs and grueling training sessions has certainly been a tall order but they are fuelled by their sporting passion and desire to do Singapore proud. Zoe, who is representing Singapore in volleyball, shared, Training can be demanding but I guess it all boils down to prioritising my time. It helps that my bosses and family members have been very supportive. Away from the international stage, the bubbly 25-yearold, who has been playing volleyball for almost 20 years, is active in the annual Keppel Games, representing Team Caspian in long-distance running, dragon boat, swimming and, of course, volleyball. Ting Hao has been practising archery for 19 years and is representing Singapore as the captain of the archery team in the SEA Games. Sharing how the Robin Hood movie inspired him, Ting Hao said, I was fascinated by how Robin Hood saved his entire village with his bow and that inspired me to take up archery. The 30-year-old is further motivated to pay tribute to Singapore s founding fathers by doing his best for the country. This SEA Games is extra significant because it is on our home turf during our jubilee year. My hope is for Team Singapore to compete with passion and dedication so that we can be victorious in the SEA Games and do our founding fathers proud. Two other Keppelites who will be at the SEA Games are Heng Yang Ling, Graduate Engineer, Keppel FELS, and Yeo Teck Chye, Assistant Marketing Manager, Keppel FELS, who will be involved in the Table Tennis and Taekwondo games as Technical officials. Having represented Singapore as umpires for various national and international events, they were invited to officiate in the upcoming games. keppelite Zoe Seet, Graduate Engineer, Piping (Production), Keppel FELS (back row, third from left), is ready to give her best as part of Team Singapore s volleyball squad As captain of the Singapore archery team, Leow Ting Hao, Assistant Superintendent, Keppel FELS, hopes to be on target for the SEA Games

38 38 Empowering Lives Keppelites Around the World Fourth-generation Keppelite For Tay Khon-Whey, Marketing Manager, Keppel AmFELS, oil rigs and ships have always been a familiar sight, even from a young age. After all, the 37-year-old had opportunities to visit Keppel s yards in Singapore and Brazil throughout his growing years. Coming from a family of offshore and marine men, making excursions to shipyards was a regular part of Khon-Whey s childhood. Indeed, Khon-Whey s great grandfather, granduncle and father all had long careers at shipyards. His great grandfather, Koh Peng Yam, was the first local electrical foreman in the Dockyard Department of the Singapore Habour Board, subsequently re-named PSA Singapore, and he even received the British Empire Medal in 1958 for his long and illustrious career with the Board. Down the family line, Khon-Whey s father, Mr Tay Kim Hock, started as a Management Trainee in Keppel Shipyard in November 1972 before rising through the ranks to eventually helm Keppel FELS Brasil as CEO from June 2000 to October Mr Tay subsequently retired from Keppel in April Perhaps it was his early exposure to the offshore and marine industry that eventually influenced Khon- Whey s career choice later on in life. Recounting his trips to the yard as a teenager, Khon-Whey mused, When I visited our yard in Brazil back then, I was impressed by its sheer size and how massive its projects were. Till today, I am amazed by how we transformed BrasFELS to the bustling yard that it is now. Upon his graduation in 2004, Khon-Whey joined Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) USA as a Project Analyst where he played a part in reviewing projects to ensure that they are delivered on time, on budget and with a perfect safety record. After his eight-year service with Keppel O&M USA and a one-year stint in BrasFELS as a Project Controller in 2009, Khon-Whey relocated from Houston to Brownsville where he took on the role of a Marketing Manager in Keppel AmFELS. The shift meant that Khon- Whey s family, including Beach outings are a common fixture in Khon-Whey s schedule, during which he enjoys quality time with his family his children, aged four and two, had to uproot as well. Khon-Whey shared, Having your family close to you is important as they provide an immense source of strength. Even though Brownsville is in the same state as Houston, it is not sustainable to drive four to five hours per trip to see my family. Adapting to a new community and culture was not a huge challenge for the sprightly young man, who shared further, I think it all boils down to taking on new opportunities and challenges with the right mindset. Houston is the largest city in Southern United States and the most populous city in Texas. It is a more bustling city compared to Brownsville, with more amenities catering to tourism. However, both cities are appealing in their own ways. I have been pleasantly surprised by what Brownsville has to offer. The city has its rustic charms, wide open spaces and many festivals that celebrate the rich Hispanic culture. keppelite

44 44 BackPage FLNGV Gimi secures charter The second Floating Liquefaction Vessel (FLNGV) conversion project, which Keppel Shipyard will be undertaking for Golar LNG Limited (Golar), has secured a 20-year charter contract for operations in Block R, Equatorial Guinea, starting from the first half of On 5 May 2015, Golar, which awarded the conversion contract to Keppel Shipyard, announced that it had signed a binding Heads of Terms with Ophir Energy Plc (Ophir) and GEPetrol, for the provision of the FLNGV, the Gimi. Gimi is the second Moss Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier which Golar has entrusted Keppel Shipyard to convert into an FLNGV. The Heads of Terms was formally ratified the following week by GEPetrol, Golar s partner in Block R in Equatorial Guinea. The agreement is being structured as a 20-year tolling contract, and establishes the key commercial terms for Golar to build, operate and maintain the FLNGV and facilities at Ophir s operated Fortuna floating LNG project in Block R. The Heads of Terms between Golar and Ophir is a positive development reflecting the interest the market has in mid-sized FLNGV conversion solutions, which are faster and more cost effective than conventional liquefaction facilities. Full construction activities of the Gimi will commence when Keppel Shipyard receives a notice to proceed. At full capacity, the Gimi FLNGV will have a contracted capacity of 2.2 million tonnes of LNG per annum. Keppel Shipyard will provide the design, detailed engineering and procurement of the marine systems and all of the conversion-related construction services for the vessel.
