Col John Norton (Wikipedia -- Teyoninhokovrawen) played a prominent role in the War of 1812, leading Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) warriors from Grand River into battle against American invaders at Queenston Heights, Stoney Creek, and Chippawa. A letter of introduction for a Wm Jeckell travelling to US and Canada. $1,500

44 Item 44. May 1, 1826 Nevis to Kingston, UC. via ship to Halifax (MY 28 36), then Quebec, forwardedd, red Rec d at Kingsotn 11th June 1836, total 2/10 due. To Colonel Nicols Commanding Ry Engineers, Kingston. Letter reads in part I was sent up here about 3 days ago to take charge of the detachment from another offi cer ordered to B/dos.. the Regt is under orders for Demerara.. there is no regular communication between these islands... sending a box containing some shells I have picked up at St. Kitts and Tortuga Talks of specimens of wood and birds, military matters, etc. From your affectionate son Gus. $2,500

Lengthy letter regarding cost of living in Demerara, wanting to return to Canada and asking for assistance, family matters etc. Very rare mail from British Guiana to Canada. $1,500

46 Item St. James, Jamaica to Holland Landing, UC via New York and Queenston, UC. rated 2/11 Cy collect. ms notation under coer and forwarded by Mobb & Son, Wm Banks, 7 Jan Well written and easily read long letter regarding work, crops, (shingled the still house, rum store and cooling shed, etc.. $500

47 Item St. James, Jamaica to Newmarket, UC, via New York, Queenston, Toronto etc, SHIP, ms 27 US (25 +2 ship), converted to 1/4 1/2 Cy plys 9d, total 2/ 1 1/2 due. The letter mentions the writer (Lawson Bishop?) is about the be elected parish representative for the Jamaican House of Assembly. Also talks about delaying purchase of engine and gears for Ironshore (presumably the plantation) for several years. $400

49 Item 49. En Route to 1849 California Gold Rush, Treasures of Peru SC Lima, Peru to Picton, CW with ms Lima, Peru S. America Decr 8th 1849 at top, lengthy letter to his mother (Mrs. Eliza Lamb), described 57 day voyage to Callao from Rio, saw Falkland Islands, snow, storms forced them below 60th parallel rounding the Cape, with ft seas (!!!!), trade winds at 40 degrees, Andes Mountains, catching cape pigeons and albatros, porpoises, whales within 20 ft of boat, diligencia to Lima, gold and jewel adorned statues of Saints in Lima, bell in belfray cast in 1345, $300,000 cotton factory, opera house, compares appearances of Romano Italia and Emperor Don Pedro, immoral dresses of ladies, small museum compared to Philadelphia, remaining trip is 59 days, expects letters upon arrival at San Francisco, hopes for success in the gold fi elds. $1,250

51 Item Abaco, Bahamas dateline 26th December to Sgt James Maltman, 2nd Battalion Royal Artillery, Kingston, UC. via England and then return double crossing of Atlantic to Halifax, NS and Quebec, Forwarded hs,, rated 2/11, Packet 3N3, plus 1N8 total 4N11 plus 9d total 5/* collect. Very rare mail from Bahamas to Canada. Letter is family related but one interesting note Nassau is not so prosperous a place it used to be -- and of late has been disturbed by controversies between the Executive and the people. $1,500

52 Item Buffalo to Kettle Creek, UC ms per Schr J Q Adams with 340 Bbls Salt. A consignee s letter from the schooner (not a steamboat as noted) John Quincy Adams with a shipment of salt, no postage required. An early and rare Lake Erie cross lake letter. $500

53 Item 53. Dateline Mouth of Genesee River Nov to Cobourg, UC. Letter metions two attempts to cross the lake, fi rst on steamboat Constitution, later on schooner Guernsey. This letter favored and eventually crossed the lake, also by ship to Coburg. Rare cross lake cover especially as winter approaches. $350

Liverpool ship letter bs and red E 5 JA Contents are printed for Abstract of Transactions in Canada form fi lled in. Canada Company wax seal. $500

55 Item 55. Steamship triangle Q with ms date 27 July 1841 Montreal to Kingston, rated 1/2 Cy collect. Rare. $1,500

56 Item Kingston, UC STEAM BOAT on cash letter, docketing indicates it is from Toronto, rated 1/6. What is amazing is the docketing indicates the letter contained L 1000 cash!!. The letter was handed to the purser who was responsible for it, although the sender not insured. This was in the days before the registry system. A rare straightline especially as a cash letter. $500

57 Item 57. STEAM BOAT LETTER KINGSTON double circle bs on cover from Toronto (July ) to Quebec, rated 3 d due. Pin holes from attaching letter (near but not affecting strike). This hammer was prepared for the fourth river steamer with examples only recorded in Rare. $1,000

(note misspelling of Postage), rated 102 US which was 5/ 1 1/2 and no BNA postage as letter was to postmaster. This handstamp was moved from Niagara on the Lake to Queenston in $750

62 Item Liverpool, England to Stanstead Upper Canada (really Lower Canada), via Canada to New York, 27 US postage (2 ship + 25 to border), Queenston, UC, redirected to Stanstead, LC rated total 3/0 1/2. matching green Queenston cds and American Postage / British do hs. $500

63 Item 63. SFL Tilbury, UC dateline No 10 Middle Road Tilbury Sept to Samuel Mackure Surgeon, Castle Douglas, by Dumfries, Scotland, posted at Erieus, UC (ms 3rd Oct 1832), faint ms Paid to Queenston 1N3 / Paid to New York 1N3 / Paid 25 and red straightline U.S. P. Paid. 25 applied at Lewiston, Lewiston cds (Oct 10) in red, carried via private ship from New York to Liverpool (boxed Liverpool ship letter bs), ms rated 1/6 (8d ship plus 10d inland), boxed 1/2 Scottish wheel tax. The U.S. P. Paid 25 was used from with fewer than 10 examples recorded. A rare postal marking and an equally exciting and lengthy pioneer letter that discussed travelling, cholera risk, getting land, clearing land, seeing Niagara Falls etc. The letter is so good that I chose to provide some of the exciting glimpses of early life that it has to offer The slavish dread that operated in the minds of the inhabitants along the river and Lake Ontario, that they were very unwilling to assist passengers on their journey for a considerable time for fear of being infected with the Cholera by us... no wonder... hundreds were carried of both at Quebec and Monreal and other ports up the river by the diseas... at Montreal... the disease had cut of about 1500 in a few days... we were detained there...durham fl uts to carry us up the rapids.. stopped a few days at Cobourg... land could not be purchased under from three to fi ve dollars per acre, the land is all taken up to a great distance from the town...came to York but the land in its neighborhood seemd to be indifferent... heard of the Talbot Settlement being superior... the government agent here was giving free grants of land to British subjects we concluded that we may as well take it up... little more than four miles from Lake Erie where vessels are regularly trading...have got 200 acres of land... have got up a logg house... clearing land for wheat... for Indian corn and potatoes... the land produceth excellent tobaca, sugar, cumcumbers, mellons and many such luxuries in abundance...we were much amused with the grandure of the scenery of the falls of Niagara such awesome quantity of water fl owing about 160 feet and such a spray arising from it like a cloud hovering over it and a sound like distant thunder and much more, ends with be so good to pay the postage as I must pay all that I send from this home to New York otherwise it will not be forwarded... $1,000

66 Item folded cover Philadelphia to Toronto, UC, rated 50 PAID, ms by the Way of Niagara, reverse with Rec d and Fow d by y.o.s. W + J.C. (W +I Crooks forwarding agent, Niagara on the Lake, UC). New Late date. This appears to be the earliest (or very early reference to Toronto. The area was referred to as Toronto in the 1600s, as a town in the 1790s it was York; in 1834 it became Toronto. $250

67 Item York, UC to Niagara, NY where red ms Niagara 9 May postage to New York. Letter from William Weeks regarding the collection of a debt and noting that the person shared the same fate with him last October in the waters of Lake Ontario. Weekes was a politician who died in a duel Oct 10, 1806 near Fort Niagara. See DCB Notation of $50 note enclosed, a very early cash letter but without the notation. Early York letter, Niagara ms s/l etc. $750

68 Item SFL dateline York 11th Dec 1804 to New York, carried outside the mail to Niagara, NY where it entered the mails, red NIAGARA / DEC 27 straightline, ms 75 triple letter rate to New York. The letter from Alexander McDonell requests You will oblige me by forwarding Lord Selkirk s letter by the earliest possible conveyance.... $1,000

69 Item Germantown, MD to Charlotteville, UC, ms Germantown 3 March and rated 20 ( miles to border), and favored from the border to destination. A very early 19th Century cover to the London district. $400

70 Item Schenectady, NY dateline March to Queens Town (Queenston, UC), ms rated 34 double 17 rate, no BNA postage noted. Letter is relating to collection of a bill. Letter is folded in style of an envelope with pointed fl ap and single wax seal. An early envelope style. $300

71 Item 71. SFL dateline Cato, Cayuga Co State of NY July to Francis Walsh, Charlotteville, Long Point District of London, Upper Canada. Faint smeared Niagara belt buckle oval, rated 18 1/2 US converted to 1N plus 10d BNA inland postage for a total of 1N10 Cy collect. But the 10d should have only been 9d and the letter overcharged 1d. The lengthy letter with notations on reverse, reads in part I am afraid when I get moved on my lot it will be with me as it was with Robinson Cruso. I can say I am Lord of all I survey. The beast of the forest are so tame, they are quite shocking to me. $300

The letter was prepaid 10c US from Albany to the border, and 11d prepaid to St. Thomas (2d FERRIAGE, 9d BNA postage). The British Postage handstamp was applied at Niagara, U.C. Ex Steinhart. $500

As noted, this hammer was only used in Buffalo and Niagara were exchange offi ces until $600
