1 Plainfield Senior Citizen Center 482 Norwich Road, Plainfield, CT Telephone: VOL. 19 ISSUE 8 August 2013 Dear Members and Friends, Summer has always been a season that I had looked forward to...there always seemed to be beautiful warm weather, blue skies, lots of activities to participate in during the day and always something going on in the evenings. I can recall my folks complaining about the heat and humidity, and I could never understand what their problem was...it was always great to enjoy the summer heat and be out of doors each day having a great time...i find that I've become just like my Mom and Dad...now I stay mostly indoors with the hum of the fan or air conditioner going and wonder when the weather will finally cool off! In just a few weeks we will be having the Brooklyn Fair and Woodstock Fair, plus all the other local fairs that local towns sponsor. That is certainly a sign that the change of seasons is right around the corner. Thankfully the local farmers markets still have an abundance of freshly grown vegetables for us to enjoy for several more weeks. The office is getting quite busy with the various travel groups sending information to us about their trips for next year...please continue to give us any suggestions you may have, they are always welcome and certainly help us in deciding where to plan our trips. Be sure to check out all of our coming activities for this month and be sure to sign up early for our Hoe Down Social, we must limit our number of reservations and they always fill up quickly. In your quiet times, please remember our members who are homebound and in nursing homes, and those who are no longer with us. A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you today just the way you are. Thank you for being my friend, Terry Cwynar, President

2 LAST MONDAY NIGHT SUPPERS August 26th 4pm-6pm CHOICE OF: LOBSTER SALAD ROLL OR CHICKEN SALAD ROLL COLESLAW and SURPRISE DESSERT Come and join us for a delicious home cooked meal Sign up at the Senior Office or Call before August 19th Donation of $5.00 collected at the door. This month marks the first anniversary of the last Monday of the Month Suppers. It's hard to believe that a year has gone by since the "Fearless Five", Lorraine Mitchell, Grace Hibbitts, Claire LeNoir, Jeanne Bourque and Anne Livernoche decided to test their cooking skills so the members could gather once a month for a nice home cooked meal and some socializing. The F.F. would like to thank Rosalie Laskarzewski, Jack Tucker, the many others who have helped each month and especially all our patrons who have made this such a success. Make sure to sign up early this month for a very special anniversary supper and some terrific entertainment. Update On Travel: PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL OUR "SINGING TROOPER" TRIP ON NOVEMBER 12TH On July10th, over 80 folks joined us as we traveled to the HuKeLau to enjoy Joey Vincent, comedian, Impersonator and singer and feast on double lobsters or a prime rib dinner. It had been several years since our group has gone to this venue, and everyone had a wonderful dinner and enjoyed a wonderful show. Just six days later, two buses departed for our annual Mystery Day trip where our final destination was the Aqua Turf for their Italian Festival. Again, great food and great entertainment. Next month, we travel to Massachusetts to enjoy a Luncheon Cruise of Boston Harbor on the beautiful Odyssey. Not only will we enjoy a 2 1/2 hour cruise, we will also be served an elegant luncheon and have entertainment. Our day will end with some free time at Quincy Market. On August 17th to the 20th, we will enjoy three nights at the Manoir Victoria in Quebec City, Canada. Our trip will include sightseeing tours of Quebec City, the Citadel and the Chateau Frontenac with a stop at the Bread Oven. And no visit to Quebec would be complete without a visit to the famous St.Anne de Beaupre healing Shrine. Just a reminder, if you have any suggestions on trips you would like us to look into for travel next year, please bring them in to the senior office. I truly believe that our trips have so popular is a direct result of all your great ideas...so keep them coming! Come to the MOVIES THURSDAY AFTERNOON MATINEE MOVIES AUGUST 8: WAITRESS **PG 13** A small town waitress with big dreams has an uncanny gift for baking terrific pies and hopes to win $25,000 in a cooking contest and transform her life. 3 Senior Health and Safety Corner: Paint Your Plate with Beautiful Colors When colorful creations come to the table, you might hear: "Wow! What a gorgeous meal!" Color pleases the eye. It's a big part of the pleasure we get from food. In fruits and veggies, color also is a sign of power--of nutritional punch. Every hue packs its own bundle of benefits. But, no single color--or food--does it all. So, the best approach is to eat a rainbow of options each day. Add fruits and veggies to every meal--and enjoy them as snacks, too. If you need some inspiration, consider the many colorful choices in the chart below. When you eat a varied diet rich in plant foods, you may chew your way to some impressive rewards. The possible benefits include: a healthier heart, immune system and eyes...lower risk of certain cancers...and positive effects on aging and memory. ENJOY A RAINBOW OF TASTY OPTIONS RED: Beets, cherries, cranberries, papayas, red grapes, red onions, red peppers, rhubarb, strawberries, tomatoes, and watermelon. ORANGE/YELLOW: Apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, mangoes, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pineapple, pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes. GREEN: Asparagus, avocados, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, green beans, green peppers, kale, lettuce, snow peas, spinach. BLUE/PURPLE: Blackberries, blueberries, Concord grape, eggplant, plums, purple cabbage, purple carrots, raisins. WHITE/BROWN: Bananas, cauliflower, brown pears, garlic, leeks, mushrooms, onions, parsnips. Reprinted from: UNITED HEALTHCARE/HEALTH & WELLNESS Plainfield Senior Club NEWS: UPDATE ON SOCIALS and BINGO Our HoeDown Social, which has quickly become one of our most popular, will be held on Thursday, September 26th from 4 to 7PM here at the Senior Center reservations will be limited, so we urge you to come in and sign up early. We will begin taking reservations on August 1st. The cost will be $10.00 per person and will be catered by G-7 Caterers. We are once again pleased to have The Country Duo as our entertainers. So get those western boots and hats on and 'come-on-down'. It promises to be another great time. Upcoming socials will be our annual Veterans Social in November and our Christmas party which will be held on December 5th. BINGO NEWS: The Tuesday bingo program continues to grow and has become a wonderful afternoon of fun. As many of you know, our bingo machine is on its last legs and in the world of bingo machines is older than most of us! This spring we started a fund to purchase a new machine and through the generosity of many with specific donations, 50/50 raffle sales, plus bottle and can refunds, we now have close to $ towards our new machine. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all who have and continue to help us in anyway. Please remember to bring in any clean returnable bottles and cans you can spare to the center and by all means, come join us on Tuesday afternoons.

4 LIBRARY NEWS by Linda Mannix BOOK REVIEW: SKULL DUGGERY by AARON ELKINS C 2009 FICTION Gideon accompanies his wife Julie to the charming little Mexican village of Teotitlan del Valle, in the state of Oaxaca, where Julie's relatives operate a dude ranch. Up to his ears in forensic work at home, Gideon can use a break and he looks forward to a week of leisure. Before their first day in Mexico is over, a request from the village police chief has Gideon examining a mummified corpse that was found in the nearby desert. Then the Federal Police ask for his help in a cold case investigation of the killing of a child, dead some thirty years. Then he takes a cursory look at the skull of a Zapotec princess l,000 years old, in the local museum, but the skull is not that old, it's much closer and it's a "he" not a "she"...and so goes the vacation till he nearly becomes a victim himself. A good read. A SUBMISSION FROM A WRITING CLUB MEMBER : DON'T MESS WITH TRAINS THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF "IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING." SUBMITTED BY: JOHN WALLER Plainfield is a railroad town. In the early days of Connecticut, transport was mainly by water. Although Plainfield was inaugurated in 1699, transport facilities were by road, as the Quinebaug River is not navigable But George and Robert Stephenson, in October 1828, in England, showed that railways are a practical proposition. Even the earliest crudest trains were such an improvement on earlier means of transport, they never looked back. Trains came to Plainfield in the 1830's. The town quickly became a railroad junction, with lines to Groton, Worcester, Willimantic, and Providence. Tracks for the Providence line have been removed, although there are many places where the road bed (railroad grade) can be seen. For example, there is a railroad bridge in Moosup which is now part of a walking trail. The town is blessed as the home of an extensive railroad facility, the Providence and Worcester (P&W) Railroad depot. This is a freight line that operated locally. There are no five-mile-long coal trains passing through Plainfield. P&W can provide an excursion passenger service, with three well equipped cars. This was used for the Plainfield Tercentenary celebrations in The cost was $7000 for a single day excursion. There are no passenger stations on the line, so P&W provided strong young men to lift handicapped passengers on and off the train....to be continued next month... Anne Livernoche Anne has lived in Plainfield all of her life. Her terrific family consists of four children and their spouses, six grandchildren, one great grandson and two grand dogs (Toby and Polly) She considers herself very fortunate to have them all in the area except a grandson and his wife who are both in the military. Anne is retired from Day Kimball Hospital but still works two days a week for Dr. Joseph Botta as a medical assistant She has been a member of the center for the last four years and is currently on the Board of Directors, runs the bingo and movie programs and can be found in the kitchen for the Monday night suppers. In her spare time Anne loves to travel, read, knit and spend with her wonderful friends playing cards. Volunteering has always been a big part of her life and she knows her Mom (past president, Helen Henault) is usually smiling down on her. DO YOU NO LONGER DRIVE?
