5 President s Report Another sad month with the passing of long time member John Chester. John and Lois have been hard workers for our club for some 15 plus years. John and Lois had a passion for the Saturday morning social group. I sincerely hope that members can continue with this great tradition. Our thoughts are with Lois, Lynda and Don McPherson and we wish Lois a speedy and full recovery from her injuries. As indicated at the last club general meeting, our July meet will happen. The location is the Kialla Park Recreation Bowls Club in Recreation Drive, just off Raftery Rd, Kialla (sort of opposite The Peppermill Hotel if that helps!) Our thanks to Hughie MacFadyen and Graeme Sinclair in securing this facility. On Monday the 26 th of June a group of us met at the club rooms and emptied the kitchen area and Neil s library. We gave the areas a quick scrub, threw out some junk and removed a kilo or two of rat poo a big effort and well done by all involved. Perhaps there will be a window of opportunity to do a stocktake of the library contents, catalogue and cull the excess. The following Friday morning saw the arrival of JMAR Constructions who fenced off the work site with security fencing. Member Bill King is our go to man, and has been liaising with Justin Marshall to expedite the renovations. Exciting times and fingers crossed that all goes well. Looking forward to catching up with members at the meeting. Bill Winters From the Editor I m sure we were all shocked and saddened by the tragic death of fellow member John Chester. Our thoughts are with Lois and family. I saw on the Motor Museum s Facebook page that I didn t win the Pontiac in the raffle. It went to a young man from Finley who sounds like a genuine car enthusiast. Congratulations to him I m sure he ll enjoy it. I had to print the Journal at the Clubrooms, so I got a look at the progress of our renovations. A lot has been done in the first week. The AC cladding has gone and been replaced by colourbond to match the rest of the building. The internal demolition has happened and the new internal walls are framed, ready for services and plastering. It s going to be much improved. Enclosed with this Journal is an entry form for the Rally of the Valley in November. This is the only rally we run with an open invitation to other clubs members. We ll be looking for good support from our club members, even if they can only attend for a day or two. More on this at the meeting (at Kialla Park). If you re not receiving a monthly advising of a new Journal being available on our website, then you need to let me know! Just send a message to the Club s address (top of page 2) and I ll add you to the list. Over 140 members now get this monthly message. See you at the meeting. Don t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are, and turn off your mobile phone! Brendan Walsh Coffee Run to Benalla 19 th July CONTENTS 4. Minutes 18. AOMC Report, What Is It? 5. Mary Apostol **Club Run to Byramine Homestead Sunday 13 th August 2017 Byramine homestead was one of the first homes built in Victoria in It was supposedly built by Hamilton Hume (of Hume and Hovell and Hume Highway fame) for his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hume after her husband was killed by bushrangers at Gunning NSW. Elizabeth with her nine children and the assistance of the Hume family, operated the 85,000 acre Yarrawonga run on behalf of the family. The house is Classified A by the National Trust and is on the Murray Valley Highway, approximately half way between Cobram and Yarrawonga. The homestead is open to the public, with tours, Devonshire teas and light lunches and brewery tastings! At the July meeting, I will be looking for an indication of how many wish to attend, and what lunch option they would prefer. Firm numbers are needed at the August meeting. 10 Rally Report 40 th Queen s Birthday Rally, Hamilton 10 th -12 th June 2017 This year s Hamilton rally was the club s fortieth, so it was named the Ruby Rally. It was also very well attended as many past members and visitors made an extra effort to be there. Total attendance was 131 vehicles, which is the biggest ever. I didn t expect to see other GVMVDC members there, but Ken and Dawn Muston were there, travelling with other Jaguar Car Club members from Shepparton. The rally started late Saturday morning with registration and lunch at the Entertainment and Convention Centre (HECC) at the showgrounds. This was followed by a very enjoyable drive to Coleraine via some of the hilliest roads in the district! We travelled up and down some very big hills to go through Wannon, Grit Jurk, Wootong Vale and Konong Wootong! It was great country driving with no other traffic around, although some of the smaller cars may have struggled on the bigger hills! We spent the afternoon in Coleraine and headed back to Hamilton at our leisure. The evening function was at the HECC, including some reminiscences of past rallies and the history of the club. Sunday s run was eastward to Wickliffe to visit Narrapumelap homestead. The rally had visited this French gothic revival home back in 1995 when the current owner had just started the restoration, although his family had bought it in As you can see in the photos, much progress has been made. A major step is happening soon, with the rebuilt tower roof going back on. It can be seen behind the topiary tree in the photo below. This will really give a completed look to the exterior of the home. We were able to climb the very tight circular stairway to the small balcony on the left side of the tower. The view across the valley was spectacular, and you could also see all of the rear yard of the homestead that was surrounded by a very impressive bluestone wall. The rally dinner was held that evening, with presentations, awards and entertainment. Quite a few of the founding and early members of the Club were there to celebrate 40 Queen s Birthday rallies. The rally finished on Monday morning with a get-together brunch and a look around the Pastoral Museum that surrounds the clubrooms. It had been a very successful and enjoyable rally. 13 Rally Report 54 th Echuca Moama Steam Rally, Rotary Park 10 th -11 th June 2017 There were lots of the usual steam and polished brass on show, but not many cars in the paddock for 1967 and earlier cars. A car of interest was the 1915 home built roadster (?) from Kerang, being restored, but running (see the photos). It has a pretty two seater body, powered by half a Model T engine. That s right; a Model T engine with a broken crankshaft was cut in half, with a flange welded onto the broken crank. I don t think it was a high revving beast. One of our members from Kyabram (we can t identify him of course) managed to sell his 1929 Chev well done. 14 Rally Report Club Run to Neville Howell s MGs, Nagambie Sunday 18 th June 2017 What a great Club day! Apart from the delightful MGs (and a couple of classic BMWs!), the lunch that Neville s wife Boon put on was just great. Remember we said that Neville would have some snags on the BBQ for us? Boon just happens to own the Thai restaurant in Nagambie, and cooked the sausages there in style, and brought them back to the house. Because we had nearly 80 there when we had told Neville we thought we might have 60, the sausages ran out. So Boon knocked up some lovely sautéed bacon and onion in her home kitchen, just like that. Thank you so much Boon! The pride of Neville s fleet is the 1933 MG K3 replica that he built about 20 years ago. He desperately wanted one, but they are very rare, and none were for sale. So, with a motor and gearbox that he was able to get, he built a replica, which he reckons is more genuine than the genuine ones! It is certainly looks the part. Because he likes hosting car club groups, he would not take anything for providing our lunch, let alone entertaining us. So we have purchased a copy of his autobiography for our library, and made a donation to his nominated charity, the Cancer Council. Read his book when you get the chance; he is a very accomplished man. Try Boon s Thai restaurant when you get a chance. Thank you so much Neville and Boon, for a wonderful day. Thank you Lennie Burkitt, for organising the day. On our way home, many of us had coffee at Le Penelopes Café and Restaurant at Kirwans Bridge Estate a very nice venue, which we will get back to. 16 Rally Report Ladies Lunch, Shepparton 16 th June 2017 A lovely group of ladies met at Noble Monks for our bi monthly car club lunch. Please leave your name on my home phone answering machine on or call my mobile on Look forward to seeing you there. Mary Apostol Rally Report Saturday Social Day, Clubrooms 17 th June 2017 With the proposed building extension starting in June, we had our Saturday gathering at the Aussie Hotel, where we had a nice meal and chat. Our President and Treasurer were not present and we later found the reason for their absence was due to a tragic accident resulting in the death of John Chester and the hospitalisation of Lois Chester. The funeral for John was delayed until Lois was able to attend via ambulance from Melbourne. There was a very large attendance of car club members and friends and relatives at the grave-side service and then later at the afternoon tea at the Kyabram Club. The next outing will be on the 15 th of July at the Shamrock Hotel in Numurkah for lunch. We will meet at the train park in Melville St, Numurkah at 11.45am and then proceed to the hotel. We look forward to seeing you all there. Thanks. Ross Nankivell Rally Report Mid-week Coffee Run to Bill & Beats, Mooroopna 22 nd June 2017 It was an ordinary day weatherwise, and we were coming off a good weekend run, so perhaps it was not surprising that the numbers were down on what we have come to expect. And look at the number of modern cars perhaps it was the overcast day, or perhaps it was just not worth getting the classic out just to go around the block? But we enjoyed the coffee and of course, the company. 17 Christmas in July, Bright 1 st -2 nd July 2017 And it was a white Christmas! Bright was cold, but the company was great, and a good time was had by all, especially Santa. Some people visited the beer festival; we all had coffee. On Sunday morning, we went several ways. Some stayed another night, a couple of cars went to Wagga (!); some went to Yackandandah on the way home. It is always good to get away with good company in great cars! 20 AOMC Report AOMC Quarterly Delegates Meeting, Springvale Monday 22 nd May 2017 The guest speaker was Sandy Cameron reporting on Bert Hinkler s first solo flight from England to Australia and the astute Brisbane Armstrong Siddeley dealer who saw a promotional opportunity and lent him a new car. He now has the history of the car which is now being restored in Bundaberg. The AOMC business seminar to help Club committees manage their club business is on June 17 th The restoration services seminar is on July 22 nd. (Pre-booking is necessary). One little piece of news. It is a $1000 fine if you do not stick the registration page into your log book. Also don t forget to sign your log book the same way as you signed your licence. We asked the question to VicRoads how long after a log book expires do we need to keep it. (The law can call and ask to check a past entry in the log book. We have heard that this practice takes place.) This is the answer we received back. I think you enquired with me about how long one should keep club permit logbooks after use. I have enquired of VicRoads, there is no regulation that stipulates that log books must be kept. However if it was me I would reckon it would be sensible perhaps to keep them for three months after expiry. If the permit holder is operating within the rules clearly there is little to be concerned about. Those dodgy operators are unlikely to retain them anyway. Hope this helps. The August AOMC Delegates meeting will be held in the Gippsland area (Big trip). I wonder what the treasurer will say if we make it a three day trip (i.e: fuel / 2 nights Motel / meals & drinks) and give the bill to the club! Graeme Smith What is it? I ran into club member Daryl Williams at Winton, who had just bought a tool but didn t know what it was for! I took a photo, although it was a bit out of focus! As you squeeze the handles, the vertical part moves down between two tabs on the lower part. The end of the vertical part is about 3mm wide by 7mm long and is a neat fit into the lower part. If you ve got any ideas, I m sure Daryl would be pleased to hear them. Page 18
