3 "Summer is definitely with us..." President's Message July - August 2017 After all the crying I did in earlier messages about unseasonably wet and cool weather, all that is forgotten with the recent spate of warm and comfortable summer weather. Many of us have taken full advantage of the good weather to get out and drive our cars. Many PSC members have joined in the fun of our hobby by taking part in events around the Northwest. The Bigfoot tour, hosted by the Kitsap Model T Club was attended by several PSC T ers as was the recent MTFCA/MTFCI meet in Whitefish, Montana. Reports are that everyone had a great time. Dick and Bev Borton have their annual Mountain Loop Tour scheduled for August 12 th. According to Dick, there are a few major changes, as well as a surprise stop this year; I urge everyone to join in if possible. Details are elsewhere in this issue. Patty and I will miss August and some September activities due to a trip to Minnesota to visit family and attend two weddings, one in Washington and the other in Minnesota. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and we hope to see you at the September meeting. Happy T'ing, Jerry Wrolstad
4 Upcoming Event Notes Mountain Loop Tour August 12th Dick & Bev Borton are planning a Mountain Loop tour from Fish Creek Farm for Saturday, August 12th. Plan to be at the farm by 9:00 AM on the 12th. We'll head out for the Mountain Loop Highway (partially gravel) visiting Darrington, Silverton, Verlot and Granite Falls (not necessarily in that order). We'll do a potluck lunch along the way and hopefully a desert stop on the way back to the farm. Please RSVP to Dick & Bev if you will be able to attend. (360) horses@fishcreekfarm.com Directions: Take Exit 206 from I-5 and go Left (West) on Highway 531/172nd St Turn Right (North) on 3rd Ave NE Turn Left (West) on 188th St Turn Right (North) on 8th Ave NW The farm will be on your left Larry Garner Memorial Car Show August 26th The car show will be from 10:00 to 2:00. They would like cars to be there between 9:00 and 9:30. Please call or me if you would like to come. All older cars welcome (they don't have to be T's.) Sunrise View Retirement Home 2520 Madison St Everett, WA RSVP to Sarah at: newbergsarah@comcast.net
5 Annual visit to Pacifica assisted living facility I was out of town but the club had a nice turnout again for the benefit of residents and their families. Some rides were given and food was eaten. A good day to share the cars. Attendees and some of the cars. Ray giving a ride and a couple of cuties on Jerry s running board.
6 The Last Hoorah Tour Sponsored by the Walla Walla Historical Auto Club The WHAC put on a great tour over the 4 th of July weekend. Two families from our Puget Sound club were signed up but only Ray and Nancy Moore (and Jussi) attended. Another couple some of you may know was Gary and Sherral Lane of Camano Island. The entries ranged from 1914 with a Model T Depot Hack and an Overland Touring to a 1977 Mercury Cougar XR7. The oldest driver was 93 years young. The sights included restored combines, vintage gas pumps, a military fort, an eclectic car collection and lots of farmland. The locals were very friendly and the caterer excellent so it was somewhat like a party on wheels. Here s hoping they find a sponsor next year. Gary and Sherral won the People s Choice award for their 1964 Ford Galaxy Jussi found a spot to sit A variety of cars and acres of wheat
7 Motoring in Montana 2017 MTFCI / MTFCA National Tour Almost 200 cars and over 400 people descended on Whitefish to see the mountains, lakes and valleys of western Montana. The town opened their doors and the hosts did a great job of showing off their area. Several of our members were able to join in - Bob Allen, Walt & Mary Berdan, Dick & Bev Borton, Morris & Sandy James, Ray & Nancy Moore and Terry & Pam Warren plus Steve and Linda helping out and doing video work. The first events were a car show on the main street of town, and then two MTFCI judging events for cars and vintage costumes. The judging thing was optional and new for us but Morris chose to participate with his 23 touring. Mary Berdan chose to create a vintage dress for the costume judging and Nancy Moore had gone to lend a hand with the fashion show and then was drafted to participate at the last minute. Both ladies looked great in their vintage fashions. There was an optional tour to the Conrad mansion in Kalispell on Sunday as well. It was a pleasant drive but a fair wait on the tours so the guys chose to stay outside and kick tires while the ladies did the tour. An opening BBQ topped off the first day and gave us the info for what was to come. Monday took us to Eureka with stops at Stonehenge and a private air museum that answered the question of what do you do when you have too much money. A stunning collection of planes and recreation of Stonehenge. We also visited a major collection of primarily farm equipment with a good mix of other odds and ends thrown in. Way too much stuff. Tuesday was the BIG day with the visit to Glacier Park and the Going to the Sun Road. The scenery is spectacular and the climb is not as difficult as you might think as the speeds are of necessity low. Driving this in an open car should be on your bucket list if you don t fear switch backs and low guard rails. Wednesday was an easy day to revisit Glacier Park or take a side trip up to Polebridge which included a bit of gravel road. Thursday was a trip to the Miracle of America Museum at Polson near the south end of Flathead Lake. The route kept us on the less traveled east side of the lake rather than racing up highway 93 on the west side. The museum has an overwhelming amount of stuff from cars to weapons to washing machines and everything else under the sun. In the evening there was an ice cream social, judging awards and an auction for the MTFCI youth foundation. Highlights were a Silver placement for Morris and his fine 23 touring car and a first place for Mary for her recreated outfit. Friday was another light day as we wandered through the Flathead Valley. Forests, farms and lakes for an easy driving day.
8 As with any major event there were a few breakdowns. Terry Warren s car experienced some ignition problems and Dick Borton s broke a pinion gear that took them out. Walt had a timer fail (his fault, the clamp was loose) that required roadside repair. He also had some issues with a Ruckstell shifter that will need some further attention but neither issue prevented continuing on the tour. Morris James, Ray Moore and Bob Allen showed us up by running flawlessly for the week. Not fair Morris, Bob & Ray. I think the end of the week found us a bit tired but really glad that we made the trip and shared the experiences of a major tour in some wonderful country. Rugged Beauty Sunday Car Show Some rode the Red Bus on Wednesday
9 A Few Other Events Ryan Ramble Shortly after getting home from Montana, Ray & Nancy Moore along with Walt & Mary Berdan went south to Petaluma to join in the annual Ryan Ramble tour. Three days of beautiful scenery along the coast north from Point Reyes to Fort Ross (a historic Russian compound) and through the coastal mountain range. Pleasant temperatures with cool mornings and some fog common to the area burning off to nice warm afternoons and evenings. No gravel roads this year but several of the paved ones had patches on the patches so we found creaks and groans that we d never heard before, the cars had some too. There were 41 cars this year and almost all made it on their own. Reichlin Mount Baker Tour Joe & Colleen Davies, Ray & Nancy Moore and Walt Berdan attended this one on August 5th. Charles Reichlin lead the way again on the typical route from Mount Vernon up to Lynden for brunch at the Rusty Wagon, then stops at Silver Lake and Maple Falls before heading up the hill. There were 15 or 16 cars at brunch but some dropped off at Maple Falls when it was apparent the smoke would be limiting the views. Those of us who hit the summit stopped at the Blue Mountain Bar in Acme for dinner to cap off the run before heading home. A good day with vintage car friends. All the cars did fine but Joe found another cylinder head crack after driving home to Bellingham. Don Babbitt Memorial Hot 100 A speedster event of course but hosted by Ray & Nancy Moore out of the Fish Creek Farm with the assistance of Dick & Bev. This was a timed road rally of roughly 100 miles complete with checkpoints. 12 cars made the run with just one failing to finish (dead battery). Dave & Jill Howie and Paul & Matthew Murray from our T club competed finishing 2nd and 5th respectively. Scott & Pam Elliott took first place and returned the trophy to Oregon. Dick & Bev s place was a great location to host from with the pleasant setting, lots of room to park and the new garage to use as a party room.
