2 2 The T Oilers is published 12 times a year by the Puget Sound Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America. The club is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and use of Model T Fords by antique fans everywhere. Club dues are $18.00 for the calendar year and include a subscription to the T Oilers. The club will gladly exchange papers with other clubs on a reciprocal basis. Display ads cost $10.00 a year for card size. All messages and articles including for sale and wanted must be submitted by the 10th of each month. For sale and want ads are free to members. Please support our advertisers. Members are encouraged to join the National MTFCA and receive the Vintage Ford for $35.00 at the address listed below. 3 3 PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE November 2010 It s November as you read this and Ann & I have just returned from our vacation drive. We left Seattle on Labor Day and drove 10,400 miles towing our trailer with the Rolls Royce inside. The Rolls club had a seminar in Vermont on maintenance of the Phantom I car, and we wanted to get a firsthand experience on the car. By the way, this car has been in our family for over 50 years. After the seminar, we left the car and trailer in Vermont, and drove into New Hampshire and Maine in order to see the fall colors. We were there for about 2 weeks and as we drove we could see the colors change from day to day. What started out as just a colorful tree here and there, by the time we left, whole acres of forest were alive with various colors. In Maine, we went to the Owl s Head museum, which was started by Rockefeller many years ago and features airplanes as well as cars. It has an airstrip attached, as well as an aircraft restoration building. They had a very large display of T s, one of which was a snowmobile. The workshop had taken a model T chassis, and cut it apart so that one could see how all of the components worked. You could even turn the crank and all the parts turned. Very educational. Next we went to Mt. Washington and found out that our pickup truck was too large to be allowed on the road. Instead, we rode the Cog railway, pulled by a steam locomotive. It is about 3 miles up, from 2000 ft to 6000 ft. It goes about 4 miles per hour and at times the angle is over 30 degrees from horizontal. We picked up the trailer and headed for Carlisle for the swap meet. While very large, there was hardly anything there that would have interested most of us. Lots of chrome and 4 barrel carburetors. The next week we went to Hershey. It is now completely on blacktop. What a change from the muddy fields of yesteryear. It, too has changed. Seems as how the AACA has seen fit to allow other types of venders in. Lots of toys and collectables. We still managed to find a couple of things for our T. Even though we are in a recession, the booths were mostly full and lots of buyers walking the field. After Hershey, we went to the toy train collectors large show in York, PA. Here again, we saw the trading floors full of venders and lots of buyers. We found some train stuff that we just could not get along without there also. After York, we began to head home. We stopped for a while in Iowa to do some genealogy on Ann s side of the family. We wanted to go to the main library in downtown Des Moines, and had to go with the 32 ft trailer attached to the truck. As luck would have it, right in front of the library were several empty parking spots. We took up several, and paid all of the meters. What luck! From here we headed pretty straight home, as we were both getting tired of driving and sitting in the truck. We postponed our planned trip to Branson. We were lucky to arrive home just before the weather began to change. We only had rain in Bozeman and from Ritzville home. Since it is now getting colder, be sure to either empty your fuel tank, or put some Stabil in the fuel. With all of the stuff they put in it today, the fuel loses its volatility after about 30 days and the ethanol separates and goes to the bottom of the tank. After you are done with the fuel, either drain the radiator or check your antifreeze. The Almanac says that this is to be a cold, hard winter. We don t want any blocks to be cracked. 5 5 October PSC Meeting Minutes 10/23/10 Call to Order at 1 PM by Donna McGinnis, co President There were no new guests. It was nice to see Al Murray in attendance, who announced that he is a new Grandpa, congrats to Al! Motion was made by Nancy Moore to approve the September minutes, second by Bev Roberts, minutes approved. No Treasurer report Committee Reports: Swap Meet: Dwaine Engler reported that the club will be selling car parts as well as collectables (not limited to car parts). Please make arrangements with Dwaine if you have something you want to sell. The club will get a percentage for selling it at the stall. Web Site: Larry Mann requested member photos of their Model Ts and/or events and would be welcomed. There is ample space available so don t worry about sending too many pictures! Safety Inspector: Dwaine Engler - Safely lists are available Store Keeper: Dwaine sold something but couldn t remember what. Editor: Walt Berdan had nothing to report but brought in newsletters from other clubs. Insurance: Donna McGinnis had nothing new to report, but had extra rosters available. New Business: Jim Cloutier donated a red windbreaker jacket to the club for which Bob Allen made a prompt donation to acquire it. Motion was made by Mike McGinnis that the 2011 dues be kept at $15.00 per family. If not received by January 1st, the dues are $ Renewals must be received no later than February 15th to be included in the club roster. Motion was seconded by Skip Arneson and approved. Skip Arneson brought up the discussion/proposal to see if the club was interested in a joint Model T /Horseless Carriage Club Christmas Banquet this year. After much discussion, a show of hands voted that the majority of the members would rather do the Valentines Party. Tours: Dwaine Engler talked about possibly doing a joint tour with the Horseless Carriage Club, Speedsters and other clubs. We need to get our cars out on the road not only for the fun but also for the exposure to the club and perhaps stir up some interest and new members! Anyone having ideas and/or suggestions, please contact Dwaine. Now for the fun part: Door Prize winners: Maggie Murray, Skip Arneson, Nancy Moore, Bob Allen, Mike McGinnis, Beverly Roberts, Randy Moore, Diane Cloutier and Harold Mann.
