4 Sadie Brash, State Blue Star Memorial Chairman and Judy Guye, WVGC State President admire the newly dedicated Blue Star Memorial Marker at the Grafton National Cemetery 4 Blue Star Markers On a cool crisp day on November 4, 2016, the Monongahela Cheat District dedicated a large Blue Star Memorial Marker at entrance of The Grafton National Cemetery on Walnut Street. The beautiful national cemetery which is near the banks of the Tygart Valley River was opened in 1868 has more than 2,100 interments including 1,252 Union soldiers. Six hundred thirteen Civil War soldiers are buried as unknowns and their graves are identified with six-inch square markers. There are burials there from every conflict from the Civil War to Vietnam, and currently the cemetery does not have room for new burials on this three acre site. Participating in the impressive dedication was Rebecca Davis who welcomed those in attendance and also unveiled the beautiful marker. The Taylor County Color Guard presented the colors.the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Donald Davis, Vice Commander of American Legion 2nd District, and the "National Anthem", and " God Bless America" were led by Gwen Kohut, Monongahela Cheat Assistant District Director. LaDonne Wetzel, Monogahela Cheat District Director introduced guest and officials. Guest speakers were: Judy Guye, WVGC State President who presented some remarks about the Blue Star Dedication, Sadie Brash, Blue Star State Chairman, who presented the "History of the Blue Star Memorial Marker" Jan Woodward, Mount Vernon Club, "History of the Grafton National Cemetery", Velma Reeves, Monogahela Cheat District, Secretary "Dedication of Marker", Keith Barnes, Director of National Cemetery, "Acceptance of Marker", and Ronald Ford gave the Benediction. Taps were played by Michael Wilson, Bugles Across America. Rebecca Davis, Monongahela Cheat District, unveils the Blue Star Memorial Marker at the entrance of the Grafton
5 Dedication of Blue Star Markers from The "shiniest stars" of West Virginia Garden Clubs are the Blue Star Markers that have been dedicated all across our state as a tribute to the Armed Forces that have defended the United States of America. It is such an honor for West Virginia Garden Clubs to participate in this program through National Garden Clubs, Inc. Our very first marker was dedicated on March 27, 1970 by Old Trail at the Veterans Memorial Park, Rt. 22 near Weirton. Currently, West Virginia Garden Clubs have dedicated 82 markers across our great state. We know all West Virginia Garden Club members love to garden, but dedicating a Blue Star Marker lets our armed service members know that we care about their service to our country. The West Virginia Garden Club website has been updated starting with number forty -three. Please check the list of dedicated markers starting with number 43, February 2, 2007, and ending with number 82, November 4, 2016 to make sure that all of the information is accurate. If there are any additions or corrections to the list, please submit the information to Sadie Brash, Blue Star Memorial Chairman, sadiebrash@yahoo.com Dedicated WVGC Star Memorials - Any additions or corrections should be submitted Sadie Brash sadiebrash@yahoo.com Blue Star Memorial Chairman 43. 12 BIRDS Betty Gorrie CHIMNEY SWIFT I hope many of you were able to catch the migration of the Chimney Swifts as they were on their way to Peru. They will, for the most part, be out of North Carolina by the second week of October. The Swift is a very small bird, a cigar shaped slender body with very long, narrow and curved wings. When the bird lands, it can t perch it clings to vertical walls inside chimneys or in hollow trees or caves. This little bird spends its life in the air, eating and drinking. It is a sight to behold watching them come in at dusk to roost in an old chimney or smoke stack. You can see them for miles coming to form a large, black funnel shape over the opening and will circle in this funnel until one flies in and then the black funnel starts to disappear into the chimney. If you are lucky, you may still see them at dusk in a chimney near you. This article was taken from Key Notes SAR October edition West Virginia Garden Club Inc. is proud to announce Brenda Moore, WVGC Past President, has been nominated as third Vice President of National Garden Clubs. Nancy will create arrangements through photos in a power point demonstration, showing this simple art form can hone arranging skills, stretch creative muscles, and provide connections to the changing seasons. She shares dozens of her creations and which techniques, containers and materials best facilitate the process. Monday s banquet features our National Garden Club President, Sandy Robinson, from Kentucky, as our Speaker. She and our SAR Director, Sarah Ann Parler, are looking forward to meeting you personally at the reception following the banquet. Tuesday, March 28, 2017 The Design Breakfast will feature The Greenbrier s own floral arranger, John Gillespie, who will give us tips and ideas for creating the spectacular displays at this premiere resort.
