Council Committee has planned to have luau entertainment. See details below in the Labor Day poster. If you have Hawaiian attire, please wear it to the Labor Day Picnic. Music and dancing will be available. There will be plenty of entertainment!! Don t forget to bring your dancing shoes! Let s encourage our neighbors and friends to come and enjoy the picnic. Invite them to be involved in our community. We ll have lots of fun. The ceremony starts at 11:00 am, so don t be late. We always have room for more volunteers. Please sign up on the Volunteer Sign-Up sheet which is on the Clubhouse bulletin board. The Rec. Council Committee s preparation meeting will be held on Sunday, September 6, at 4:00 pm. The next Rec. 2 A Visit from Councilman Goodrich All of us were pleasantly surprised when Councilman Tim Goodrich dropped in before our August 19 th Board Meeting. With our Chairman s approval, the Councilman addressed the residents in attendance. He spoke about the improvements taking place at the Del Amo Mall and the Civic Center as well as other civic matters. Residents had many positive comments about his visit and found the information he provided to be timely and extremely interesting. Submitted by Julie Dojiri, Civic Affairs Chair Neighborhood Watch Workshop This was a HUGE SUCCESS! We literally ran out of seats and many residents were standing in the back! Presenters were Officers Bernier & Dukeman (Community Detail), Officer Scott (Traffic), and Officers LaPlante & Cattouse (Animal Control). Their presentations were excellent and they did an exceptionally outstanding job answering all of the questions from the residents. Some of the topics discussed were personal and home safety tips, protection against scams, speeding on Nadine, identity theft, vacation patrol, and pet safety. I would like to commend my committee members for their hard work. We had less than 1 ½ weeks to put it all together. Great team work. Thank you NH residents for attending this informative workshop. Submitted by Julie Dojiri, Civic Affairs Chair DMT MEETING IN SEPTEMBER FIRSTAID TRAINING There will be an important meeting for all Disaster Management Team members on Thursday, Sept. 17 th. We will have a guest speaker and trainer for our DMT members. We will practice hands-on training for First- Aid in the event of a major earthquake or other disaster that may be coming our way. Bring your Walkie-Talkies to this meeting for battery check. 3 CLEAN YOUR DRYER VENT PREVENT FIRES FROM LINT BUILD UP It s important to have your dryer vent thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis. The lint builds up in the vent and when it reaches critical mass it can catch fire due to the dryer heat! If it feel unusually hot it s a good clue you have dryer vent lint build up. New Horizons CC&R s tell us on page 18 paragraph e, that we as residents are responsible for our appliances including the dryers and the vents. Be aware that dryer vents are not all the same configuration depending on the building construction. Some vents go under the floor, some go over the top of the condo and out the roof, some are lined with plastic and some are lined with metal. So there may be different prices from the vent cleaners depending on how your dryer vent is constructed. You really need a specialist to clean the entire dryer vent because it takes specially designated tools and knowledge. The vent needs to be cleaned from both ends; from the machine to the wall, and then from the wall all the way to the outside outlet. The specialists use special tools to clean the vent from both ends. I obtained the names of the following dryer vent cleaners from the internet but I cannot make recommendation for any of them as I have not used them yet. 4 Fall is upon us. That means we will be making our annual fall pilgrimage to the local mountains with a trip we call Oak Glen a la Mode. You know it is autumn in Oak Glen when the aroma of homemade apple pie, fresh pressed cider and just-picked apples fills the brisk mountain air. The apple harvest in Oak Glen extends from September through mid-november, calling visitors like us to its acres of wonderful orchards set against a backdrop of snow-peaked mountains and Autumn colored leaves. This has traditionally been one of our most popular trips. Our first stop is for a home-style lunch at one of Oak Glen s most popular restaurants. Afterwards, we are on our own to stroll through picturesque Oak Tree Village and visit Los Rios Rancho. While we are busy shopping, the driver picks up whole fresh-baked apple pies for everyone to take home. Mmmmm! The date is October 16. The cost is $63.00 with 38 or more passengers or $70.00 with folks. Questions? Call Ed Reilly at or Sharon Rose at ATTENTION CRUISERS: Judy Foster in our Travel Club is proposing a relaxing 7- Day cruise to take place beginning April 16, We would pick up the cruise ship (The Crown Princess) in San Pedro, sail to San Francisco, then to Santa Barbara, then to San Diego, Ensenada, Mexico and then back to San Pedro. We will be posting a signup sheet on the board directly. If you are interested, sign up on the board and give Judy a call at for more information. Price for this cruise will be based on the stateroom accommodations, per person. It is a make up your own group and choose your tee time. The first tee time is 7:30 am. Entry fee is $3.00. If you don't have a group and want to play, just sign up and we will put you with a group. We are expecting a huge 50/50 raffle. Tickets will be sold the week before Labor Day and at the picnic. The 50/50 raffle will help pay for a new computer for the Newsletter office. You don't have to be present to win. Contact any golfer and they will assist you in buying raffle tickets. They are $1.00 each or 7 for $5.00. Gene Aurand - Golf Committee Thursday Women s Golf Tournament Due to summer heat, only 6 people showed up, 2 people quit to avoid heat stroke. We cancelled today. By KAY & RUTH IN MEMORIAM Friends and acquaintances were saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Carol Rutledge on Aug. 22, 2015 in Midland, Michigan. Long time residents, she and Bob moved to Michigan about 4 years ago. Carol sat on the Board Of Governors in several positions, including Insurance chair and as Chairman of the board. She is survived by her husband, Robert, 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Page 4
