1 Presidents Message. The January 4th SNN Board meeting covered a lot of ground. Highlights: (1) there is general approval of the current level of membership and, at present, there will be no attempts to aggressively seek additions, although new members will always be welcome; (2) various suggestions were made for volunteer opportunities and Jack Sample noted that Habitat for Humanity is considering sites in Sandwich, which may be an opportunity for us (more on this later); (3) to help all of us, but particularly the new members, we will be adding identifying photos of new members, if and as submitted, to the Newsletter; (4) we will also be trying to set up a bank of individual photos of all members; (5) Marie Luck provided a plethora of suggestions for special events (homemade ravioli coming soon, see below); (6) finances are a bit tight, but dues will remain as presently set for the time being. Any and all comments are solicited and appreciated. The MEMORIES section of the Newsletter has had very good support so far and we d like to keep the flow going. Anne Sayer has a piece this month. You will find it interesting. And see if you can spot Anne and Wade in the accompanying picture (hint: two rows from the center, near the door on the left, or not). And we should note that Candice Murphy did not get proper credit for her MEMORIES submission last month. Thank you, Candice. Best wishes to all during the ice/rain/snow and/or we re not here season! 2 A NEW CONCEPT, FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, FROM TOM CLARK Fellow members: I would like to start a gardening club and am looking for suggestions/comments. My idea is to have a roaming meeting, meaning we would go to different members gardens and plant/work on each other s gardens. Also, we could all have access to each other for suggestions and help with problems, and for possible solutions. I am happy to offer my help and have offered to be a Coordinator. I have been gardening for over 40 years (not that I have all the answers; we can all learn from each other). So, that is the core idea behind this concept. Maybe it s something that you ve wanted to try, but never had the time or a support group. Gardening is very rewarding. So please, let s get some suggestions and feedback. Tom Clark. I can be reached at topcat426@gmail.com. PS: And a related note: Before moving here, I belonged to a community garden, and I think it would be great if we could somehow get a plot or two in the community garden in Sandwich. We had a very enjoyable experience with that back home. I understand the Board is already working on this; let s hope it happens. Editor s note: Tom s says peas can be planted in March; everything else starts in May. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES FOR FEBRUARY 2019 To Newcomers who might be interested, the following fundraiser is being held: Boston Celtics Owner Wyc Grousbeck and Forbes Editor Randall Lane Will Discuss All Things Celtics at Fund for Sandwich Fundraiser in February The Fund for Sandwich of The Cape Cod Foundation has announced that Wyc Grousbeck, entrepreneur and co-owner of the Boston Celtics, will speak in Sandwich on Monday, February 4, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., at the historic Sandwich Glass Museum. 13 PROFILE, PRENTICE ADLER, NEWSLETTER PUBLISHER Prentice Flying High I have been to Prentice and Annie Adler s home on a number of occasions. It is always an adventure and an education. They always seem to be undergoing a new project. Re-doing the Living Room; Re-modeling the kitchen; Re-doing the bathrooms; building new driveway and walkways; When I arrive and ask, What s new? I always get a fascinating answer. So today I asked and got a big surprise. What s new? Prentice bought an airplane. That s right, a four-seater. Two hundred horsepower airplane they can use to fly anywhere in the country. I knew they had talked about a plane in the past. Prentice was part of a small flying club in New York and they took turns with their fellow club members flying to sites around New England and the eastern vacation locations. But this is their own plane. A high-powered Beechcraft C 24 R Sienna. It has retractable landing gear and full navigation tools. The plane will be housed at Hyannis Airport. The plane can seat as many as four and can fly up to five hundred miles. He and Annie are looking forward to flying local trips to Long Island, New York City, upstate New York and New England, and of course Cape Cod. They also have ideas of flying to Florida, Virginia, Great Lakes and beyond. Annie love skiing in the Rockies, while Prentice can take an extra flying lesson or two. Annie has experience in the passenger seat while Prentice is flying. Additionally, she is planning to take training classes in basics of flying so she will be capable of navigating and landing in the event of an emergency. Prentice and Annie both have a keen sense of adventure. They will be coming soon to the skies over Sandwich. Wade Sayer

14 Memories Woodstock Music Festival August 1969 It sounded like a fun adventure: a trip to upstate New York to a 600-acre dairy farm near the Hudson River where there was to be a music festival featuring some of the day s most popular musicians who Wade, newly-returned from Viet Nam military service, had grown to like while overseas: Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, Jimmy Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone. Names unfamiliar to me as I was still enjoying Peter, Paul & Mary, the Beach Boys and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. But I thought why not? My new friend Wade and I fried some chicken, loaded up coolers with sandwiches, snacks and sodas, packed up his white Saab with a tent and camping gear and headed to Bethel, New York. The traffic was unusually heavy on the New Jersey Turnpike so Wade, knowing that area well having grown up in New York, decided to get off and circle out to the west arriving into Bethel from the back. As we approached from that direction there wasn t too much traffic and we easily found a place to park and pitch our tent. We still didn t fully yet understand what was beginning to unfold: an unprecedented number of people joining together for a weekend of music, love and peace. But there was a distinctly different vibe than anything I had ever experienced! We walked through a woods where there was the aroma of pot, the jingle of wood chimes, the sounds of flutes and guitars being played by hippies dressed in beads, long hair and headbands, an old school bus painted psychedelic colors with the name Hog Farm on the side (we learned that it was a large commune from the San Francisco area). Girls were walking around with t-shirts and no bras not what you normally saw in 1969! I felt like Dorothy: I definitely wasn t in Kansas anymore!

15 Then a telltale sign that this was going to be an unusually large event really hit us as we walked up a long hill: the path was lined with what seemed like hundreds of porta-potties! We approached the top of the hill and there, spread out below us, was a natural amphitheater crowded with easily 300,000 people. It was breathtaking and unlike anything either of us had ever seen. At the base was a towering sound system and stage and so the music festival began. The acoustics were amazing as the hill served as the perfect amphitheater. Due to the massive traffic jams, the bands (as well as food and water were being flown in by helicopter and the thrump-thrump-thrump sound of the helicopter flying in to drop off the performers is another memory of those two days. Another memory was the voice of the announcer it was deep, melodic and incredibly calming and reassuring. The voice made announcements throughout the event, warning not to take a brown pill, that a baby was just born and that we were the second largest city in New York. And on that first afternoon, he announced that the concert was free and open to all. This was a festival of sights and sounds and smells unlike anything else. After staying in the tent the first night, we decided to spend the rest of our time camped on the hill so not to miss any of the artists. That second day we listened to Janis Joplin, who was everything you had heard about, followed by Credence Clearwater Revival which to this day is one of my favorite bands. The Who performed and then late at night Sly and the Family Stone came on and we were up jumping and dancing! It was an awesome experience to be on this hill with such a huge crowd all dancing and singing. enjoying this incredible music. The last group we saw was the Jefferson Airplane performing as the night started turning to morning. Music, love and peace was how the concert was advertised and indeed it was! We never heard a fight or altercation the entire time we were there. And, oh, yes! There was some rain, but we didn t mind. At this point we decided to avoid traffic jams and to head home for a shower and some sleep! It was only when we arrived back to our normal lives, I to an apartment in Georgetown with a roommate and Wade to Ft. Meade in Maryland, did the impact of Woodstock began to sink in. While at the festival, we really had no idea of the kind of attention it was receiving across the country. My family in Ohio was shocked to discover I had been there! Woodstock was a memorable two days when we were young and beginning to know one another! And here we are 50 years later with three children and five grandchildren. A great adventure indeed!
