1 JANUARY 2019 Presidents Message. The Christmas Holiday Party went over very well this year, we think. Our Special Events Coordinator, Marie Luck (profiled this month), brought the desert from the famous Montilio s Bakery, and made sure none of us suffered from any form of sugar deficiency. The MEMORIES section of the Newsletter has had very good support so far and we d like to keep the flow going. Candice Murphy, our first female contributor, has a piece in this month. You will find it interesting. As noted before, we hold four (4) Board meetings during the annual July-June cycle. There is a meeting on January 4 th. If anyone wants a particular issue addressed to the Board (suggestions for changes or additions to our normal format, new activities or programs, etc., whatever), please let us know as soon as convenient, so we can figure out how best to present such matters to the Board. Best wishes to all during the holiday season! Kit and Mike Sullivan CONVIVIALITY ON THE CAPE

9 PROFILE, MARIE LUCK, SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR Marie was busy making arrangements, scheduling events, organizing table center-pieces, appetizers, desserts from the bakery, meeting with Newcomers members. But busy people always seem to be able to find time. She is a very busy lady, but Marie set aside time to talk. Do you know what I d like to do? she asked. I didn t. I d like to write a book a book about Ex-Pats. You mean football? I asked, surprised. No not football. Ex-Pats are Americans living overseas. Ex-Patriots. Working, living, and studying in a foreign country, adjusting to foreign cultures and languages. Curious, I asked her, Where does that come from? Oh, my experiences, living and traveling with Gary. We ve lived and traveled to lots of places. We ve saved books, brochures, magazines and lots of stuff in boxes down in the basement. I saved stuff all these years thinking it would make an interesting story. Where have you travelled? I queried. Oh, well, we ve been to Italy, many trips to Florence, to Lake Como, Venice, to Greece, Germany, and Spain. Where did you grow up? My family lived in Quincy, then moved to Milton. I went to public school until Junior High, then switched over to Jeanne D Arc, a private school in Milton. I worked hard through high school and went on to Northeastern University. I was in the five year work-study program. What did you major in? I wondered. I was in education. I ve always been interested in teaching, teaching young, early education students. I love using imaginative methods with students. It helped them learn better. I finished my program at Northeastern, and went on to Boston College for my Masters in Reading Development. When did you meet Gary? I met him the last few weeks we were at Northeastern. Good thing too she smiled, we were busy dating, and not studying so much.
10 I got my Masters in twelve months and set off to teach, but having a family came first, while Gary was expanding his engineering and construction skills. Our son Gary came right away, then Jason and lastly Carolyn. And instead of teaching right away, I started a couple of bakery and food catering businesses in the financial district of Boston. Sweet Celebrations by Montilios, A retail store in the financial district with full restaurant, bakery and office catering; Deli/ bakery in the North End and a Holiday gift basket company where I shipped gourmet foods and Montilios nationwide. As I look back, I don t know how I managed it all. Finally, Gary got an engineering job offer to go to Pennsylvania, and as young people do, off we went. Marie and Gary moved to many places, and learned to adjust to the local customs, but always found, in every community, a group of Americans. They called themselves Ex-Pats and they continued their links to American families and holidays and managed American news and watched what was going on at home. Gary, Marie and their family moved to England for two years, to Holland for two and a half years, and then on to Egypt for a few years. In between they moved to Doylestown, Bucks County, to Chester County, and then on to Avondale, in the Brandy Wine district in beautiful southeastern Pennsylvania. Finally they ended up in Calgary, on the edge of the Rockies in Canada. They retired early to Cape Cod three years ago, They wanted to be near family and grandchildren and made friends through Newcomers and Marie s painting and many social activities in Sandwich. She still maintains close relations with her brother and sister, and with Montilio s, her family s business. She has found a comfortable level of interaction by combining bakery and business, with friends and Newcomers. Marie enjoys organizing members events, cooking and entertaining, plus bicycling, kayaking and member socials. Among her favorite thing to do is walking on the Cape Cod beaches, gathering stones and shells. One of her favorite activities is new and exciting for her. She is becoming a painter. She enjoys taking lessons on the Cape, and expanding her skills. And now, now she wants to put all of this background and experience together and share it with readers and listeners on the Cape and around New England. Writing seems to come naturally for her, along with her teaching skills. We look forward to hearing all about her writing project. And we are all enjoying the Special Events and field activities she organizes for Newcomers. Marie s active mind is a great addition to Sandwich Newcomers and Neighbors. And we are all enjoying the Special Events and activities she organizes for Newcomers. Wade Sayer
