1 VOL 11 PAGE 1 Evergreen AMCA It s Your Club! A President s Message from Mike Brown Thank you, Jim Freeman and Bill Mosiman for your excellent work the past few years. The chapter has expanded both with members and events under Jim s leadership, and the financial position of the chapter is solid thanks to Bill s management of the books. The amount of time required to do the job right, is a huge added load on folks who already have plenty on their plate. The club has been well served by these two selfless individuals, and by all the officers who step up and take it on. We all owe you. Since 1986, after Sig Montgomery in Everett sold me the Chief as a rolling basket case and told me to get hooked up with The Evergreen Chapter, I ve been attending chapter meetings and events. It was very good advice! At that time, we usually met at Norm s shop in the U-District. Don Bell and I would share a ride up from Tenino most times, with me driving because night time driving was not his thing. The driving wasn t as bad as it is now, a bit less traffic. Not as many nuts on the road. It was always fun going to those meetings. Yeah, we got some business done sitting around in the elevated seating area in overstuffed couches and chairs, but a lot of time was spent wandering around Norm s collection, and learning about the bikes and the people there. A couple of times there was a bit more excitement than anyone bargained for, (cont d on page 6) In this Issue: Holiday Dinner Oregon Trail Nat l Road Run.3 Pres. Mike s message....4 The Holiday dinner at Shenanigans had a good turn out; we filled up the Olympic room with lots of great food and festive conversation. It was nice to meet several new members too. Not to mention, we had a beautiful view of the sunset! Add some raffles and laughs about past ride mishaps, and it was a great event. 4 VOL 11 PAGE 4 These How to Ride Motorcycles safety rules were included in some of the literature that came from Japan with the bikes when they were first imported to the West interesting and amusing! No doubt there were things that were perhaps lost in the translation! Thanks to Vaughn for sending this for all to enjoy. Cont d from Pg 1 It s Your Club! Mike Brown, Pres....like the Pig Head incident, and the SPD interviews after a slight altercation, but for the most part it was a rewarding get together. We now meet all up and down the I-5 corridor, west to Hood Canal, and east to the Snoqualmie River Valley. The idea was to encourage folks to attend meetings close to their locale. It worked, but to a lesser degree than expected. I think it s still a good idea, as long as we can find a quiet place that doesn t distract from the purpose. That s a lot harder in practice than it sounds. Having meetings at someone s home or shop would be ideal until you think of all the mud tracked in, the food needed to feed the crew (paid for by the chapter), and the cleanup after; not quite a home invasion, but close. Many folks don t care too much for meetings, what a yawner right? But we need to have them in some form just to pay the bills if nothing else. So I was thinking (a rare thing) that maybe meetings should be proceeded by a ride... Ride Em Don t Hide Em as they say. That way we carry out two of the tenets for our reason to be. I haven t kicked this can around too much; a couple of members have heard it, but most have not. So I would like to hear from y all. And, where might these rides be ridden? Send in those cards, letters, and s; I know there are good ideas out there. mikeandshaun@me.com We have a full calendar for 2018, including Monthly meetings; a Spring Opener; the Small Boar Roar; West Sound Tech Car & Bike Show; Ricky s American Legion Ride; Father s Day Bike Show at the Olympic Air Museum; a SW Washington ride; the Gorge Run; the Oregon Trail Chapter National Road Run; the Great Colville Run; 38th Annual Swap Meet & Show; the Cannonball Run; and maybe, if the weather cooperates, a New Year s Day Run. So dust them off, charge those batteries, tighten and oil the chain, put some fresh gas in em, and get ready for another year of old iron, good riding, and good friends.

9 VOL 11 PAGE 9 TRIPS & TRAVELS So, Mike & Shaun Brown are enjoying Mardi Gras and probably warmer weather as I write...it is great to get away, even in our own area, for even a weekend. So I would encourage you to talk over some ideas now, and make plans for some rides. I find it helps me get through the winter just thinking about the finer days ahead. And if you plan ahead, you find more options out there, maybe cheaper! Ok by now maybe you can tell I m just trying to fill up this page so I can get it off to you. I can always use a picture and a couple sentences from YOU for the next newsletter. Just me with NEWSLETTER in the subject. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Glacier is aptly named... So, Last fall, Bill & I headed North to Whidbey and east across the North Cascades, through Republic, North into Cranbrook, Canada with a destination of Glacier Nat l Park. It progressively got colder and wet as we arrived in their first snowfall of the season on Sept14th! We parked the bikes for the next two days and were glad for our Swiftwater cabin. On the 3rd day we had sun and beautiful scenery formerly obscured. I never thought we d run into snow this early glad they still had red bus tours while it was snowing! Mad s 1966 BMW R60/2 It all began with a casual conversation I had with club member Norm at the Tenino Swap meet...i was walking up to the registration booth when I stopped and asked if he had any old BMW s for sale. Well, yes, he had one he was thinking of selling, and said he d me after he got home in Sept. A couple weeks later, I heard from Norm when Bill & I were just heading out to Glacier National Park on a bike trip, so after we froze our butts in the early Sept. SNOWFALL (another story) and got back home, we continued the conversation via . I d never ridden an older BMW but liked the looks of some I saw at Vashon it is a different feel, but I ll get used to it! Most of you know how the Northwest winters are, with long dark dreary rain for days-on-end...so what we needed was a trip to warm and sunny Arizona, right??? Well, we arranged to fly South, just in time to enjoy the 6 days of Arizona winter...we still had better weather than here, but not the sunny day - dreaming kind I had imagined. We did get to visit friends in Mesa, Rex & Carol, who came to our Road Run last summer, and finished the bike deal, thanks to former member Mike Kane who transported it to Las Vegas, and a BIG thanks to our own amazing Evergreen member RON RUMBOLZ who brought it back from Vegas to the Northwest for me. These folks made me smile! See you this summer!

10 VOL 11 PAGE 10 More rambling. The Northwest winters can be a bummer; dark, long days and plenty of rain you think will never stop...but the sun is coming out a bit more and the days are getting longer...so don t lose hope one last winter blast and we ll be ready for spring! I just got confirmation we will be a part of the Olympia Air Show on Father s day mark your calendar and bring a bike down for the display. I hope you ll plan on attending a club meeting or event; there are some really nice folks you might like to get to know. And if you feel like we haven t had a meeting near you, send us a suggestion we ve missed seeing some of you who have been busy with other stuff, and understand that distance can be an issue. Send us your idea for a meeting place or a ride. AND Send your newsletter story & pics to me at malmgren12345@msn.com. A picture of your bike, a trip blog, a project or a stupid joke (within reason) could be filling this space instead of me blah, blah, blah. Or, contact me and tell me about your project, trip, etc. and I ll do the writing. Just need a little something to work with... And, lastly, if anyone would be interested in more about this editor thing, let me know and I ll teach you everything I learned the hard way in one easy lesson. I may be ready to take a little break after this year. So step right up Madeline RIDE EM, DON T HIDE EM 2018 Evergreen Chapter Officers Pres. Mike Brown, mikeandshaun@me.com VP Nate Zawlocki, nate.zawlocki@gmail.com Secretary Otto Allison, ottoa@w-link.net Treasurer Mike Williams mlw781@comcast.net Editor M Malmgren, malmgren12345@msn.com Meetings held monthly, usually the 4th Saturday.
