2 Chairman s chat Hello again, May I give a huge thank you to all of you who supported the appeal for the food banks; as usual you were very generous. It would be great if we could give them support for Christmas. I hate to think that there will be families searching for food over the period when I know I will overeat. However, my conscience will not trouble me enough not to eat! I have eaten my fill at our lunches and WI celebrations that now I know I need to join a slimming club!! At the Autumn Council Meeting you will have been given some food for thought, the decision between unincorporation or incorporation; the Trustees have digested the information and we feel that we should become incorporated but you, the members, will make the decision - power to the people!! We still have a busy programme so I hope that I will see you at something on offer. I am not great at crafts but must make an effort to find an interesting hobby that I like and can do - as I also find just doing nothing also difficult. A poor advert for WI where there are so many of you who are talented - I must ask Marigold to take me in hand. Rambles Frances Langley fa.langley@btinternet.com Tel / Many thanks to all those WIs who organised rambles this year. We have had some lovely walks and delicious lunches and the hard work of individual WIs was much appreciated by those who have taken part. Unfortunately numbers are down generally and we have had to cancel three out of the planned eight walks as they were no longer viable. This is very disappointing for the host WI as the walks take a lot of organising. I know the rambles enjoy a loyal support but we need to attract more walkers if we are to continue. I would be very grateful if you could let me have any have any feedback or suggestions. Public Affairs & International - Chairman: Sarah McFarlane Are you Being Scammed? Science Co-ordinator - Glenis Wedzicha The Science of Christmas, Seamer and Irton Memorial Hall, Main Street, Seamer, Scarborough, Tuesday 27 November OR Copmanthorpe WI Hall, Station Road, Copmanthorpe Thursday 6 December,7.00pm 9.00pm. Make this Christmas a magical one with a science extravaganza held on successive weeks. Please indicate chosen venue on the application form. Cost: Members Only. Closing date: Tuesday 9 October. Great Women in Science: - Rosalind Franklin ( ) - Watson and Crick are linked with the elucidation of the double helix structure of DNA (Deoxy-ribonucleic acid), the biologically active molecule which enables replication of one cell into another of the same type within the cell nucleus (the so called blueprint of life). But, where was the unsung hero (or heroine) without whose painstaking work in the laboratory their results might never have surfaced? Rosalind Franklin was an English Chemist and X-ray crystallographer. Her studies in the latter complex technique were eventually to facilitate the elucidation of the double helix structure of DNA. Franklin held that Watson and Crick s claim regarding the structure of DNA, was premature and that they had not built up a case backed by experimental data. She was an enthusiastic experimental chemist and produced detailed images of the double helix structure from this evidence. Her work was shared with Watson and Crick, whom she had met at Cambridge, where she took her first degree in Chemistry. Watson and Crick ignored any contribution she had made, though this was considerable, and published their results in 1962 sharing the Nobel Prize for Medicine in the same year. Sadly, Franklin, then prematurely deceased, received no recognition. The Nobel Committee does not make posthumous nominations. Franklin was also known for 4

5 her pioneering work on viruses and the fine structure of coal and graphite. She died receiving no recognition in any major field. A New Challenge - Are you ready to take on a new challenge? Eleven (or so) years ago I did precisely that when I became the Science Co-ordinator of the NYE Federation. Challenging, indeed; arduous, monotonous, dull, lonely definitely not. The role has enabled me to forge new friendships; members approach me smiling with outstretched hands because they have enjoyed my events, my brief items in the WI newsletter, and everything I built into the role, and I do not relinquish the task easily. However, after eleven years at the helm, I feel it is time to hang up my lab coat, place the test-tubes tidily in the rack and hand over the reins to a successor. Do you have a background in science? Are you enthusiastic about your subject and can you infuse others with your enthusiasm? There has been a Science Co-ordinator in our Federation for many years now and science is a major part of the NFWI Constitution. Our Chairman, Jennie, would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in making this valuable contribution to the work of the NYE Federation. Thank you Glenis. Climate Ambassador - Aynsley Halligan Things are Hotting Up at Stockton on the Forest Village Hall,Saturday 16 February 2019, 10.00am 3.00pm.Climate change is having an impact on all our lives. Come and learn what Climate Change is about, how we can protect our world from its devastating effects and what our Government is doing to share the love. Our Speakers for the day will be Sir John Lawton, an eminent ecologist; Aiden Heeley-Hill, a researcher in environmental sciences at York University and Kevin Hollinrake, the MP for Malton & Thirsk and PPS to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Armed with more information, we will be better able to act and enable others to provide a safer and more stable environment for future generations. There will be opportunity to question and debate at the end of the meeting. Cost includes a light lunch, tea and coffee. Open to members and non-members. Book now; closing date: Thursday 20 December. Resolution Adviser - Glenis Wedzicha The Longlist of Resolutions put forward by members across the UK is now being compiled by NYFWI and sent to those who will attend the Shortlist meeting in London on 2 October. This year NYEFWI will see two Resolutions in the Longlist, one from Glaisdale, the other from Burniston and Cloughton. In each case, representatives from the UK Federations will need to determine whether these two Resolutions meet the criteria for a good resolution. We wish these members every success with their resolutions which have involved a great deal of painstaking work. Membership & Training - Chairman: Janice Whiteford Dates for the Diary: Food Hygiene Online Course WI House, Saturday 19 January 2019, am start 1.00pm approx. Details next month. Every WI that does catering in any way should have at least one person trained and in receipt of their Food Hygiene Certificate. This is an online course, but we will start with a little tuition. If you have your own laptop or device, please bring it along but we have a few to go around. The Federation has agreed to reimburse the cost of the course for one member per WI, subject to a receipt and a copy of your certificate being submitted. More details next month. Saturday 9 March 2019 Presidents & Secretaries Workshop, WI House - see next month for details. Programme Planning Workshop Saturday 6 April 2019 watch out for more details. British Wool Show - Members of the M&T team, and our craftswomen Marigold Wilkinson and Wendy Thorpe were delighted to welcome many Federation WI members, as well as those from further afield, at Murton Auction Mart on 10 & 11 August. The event was very well attended by enthusiastic knitters, crocheters and weavers, as well as those looking for ideas and inspiration. Lots of ladies benefitted from Marigold and Wendy s straightforward problem solving demonstrations. A number of ladies expressed interest in their local WIs and will be finding their way to your meetings in the near future, so do keep an eye out for them. Jane Holloway 5

6 Remember - WI Advisers are here to give help and advice: Pat Shotton ; Janice Whiteford ; Val Illingsworth ; Glenis Wedzicha ; Jane Holloway RECENTLY IN OUR FEDERATION Byland with Wass are renowned for knowing how to hold a bit of a do and they excelled themselves on 17 August with a travel extravaganza the World in Wass. Held at Nancy and Nick Walker s wonderful home, more than 100 guests were entertained to presentations by travel specialists organised by Spears Travel. Wine from each destination discussed; from the Italian Lakes to the Mekong River, via the Rocky Mountains, was accompanied by appropriate canapés produced by WI members. Despite the challenging weather, everyone had a marvellous time and the event raised over for Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Jane Holloway Stillingfleet members spent a most enjoyable afternoon at the Snowlandia Boarding Kennels and Cattery at Moreby which is the home of one of our members. Some members brought their dogs and along with some of the kennel staff and their dogs had an interesting walk around the surrounding countryside. Those of us who were unable to walk far, were able to sit in the very pleasant gardens, along with guinea fowl, hens and an occasional squirrel to entertain us. Finally our host treated us all to a beautiful afternoon tea in the garden. We were served elderberry cordial, savoury biscuits, victoria sandwich, chocolate brownies, and of course a good cup of Yorkshire tea which was poured from an amazing strawberry shaped teapot. Everything was homemade by Amy and very scrumptious. It really was a most relaxing afternoon outing. Grace Atkinson, President A Grand Day Out - So, my first Ebor Group trip. The summer as we know has been glorious. However, the first couple of weeks of September became cold, wet and decidedly autumnal. Therefore a group of ladies dressed in layers, including wooly tights, trousers, boots, scarfs and warm coats boarded a mini bus to the Yorkshire Dales. Almost immediately the sun came out, showing the Yorkshire scenery at its most beautiful. First stop was Tennants Auctioneers Garden Room for coffee, which included the best, largest coffee and walnut cake ever seen. The journey continued along the Dales, stunning views, rolling hills, stone walls and barns, with contented sheep and cows grazing in the fields. Next stop Hawes village, with two hours of tempting, potential money spending, in the markets, interesting shops, pubs and tea rooms. Eventually arriving at the Yorkshire Creamery, the sunshine and warmth continued, many layers of clothing and shopping were left on the bus, as we were provided with a demonstration of cheese making. All the milk used, arrives daily in tankers from those local farms we had passed where the animals eat outdoor grass, herbs and flowers. There was an exhibition with viewing area of the factory, followed by cheese tasting and buying. Then tea, fruit cake with Wensleydale cheese was provided. We returned to the bus with a diversity of flavours, including, smoked, mature, with apricots, cranberries, pineapple or onion and also sheep s cheese. 6

7 The trip was well organised, great fun and we made friends from other groups within the Ebor area. The bumpy mini bus, could have been advertised as a white knuckle ride at times, but the scenery was spectacular. What fun is the WI, apart from meeting new people and visiting new places, it was a grand day out, with the added bonus of no demands from husbands, dogs, or grandchildren. Rosemary Horseman, Strensall One special member of Brayton, Jean Corless, was looking forward to the Yorkshire Day lunch at Burn Hall Hotel Huby for a particular reason: she is an avid reader of the books written by the day's speaker Milly Johnson. Jean was thrilled to discover when we arrived that our WI had been seated by our thoughtful NYE organisers on the top table with Milly herself. A very special photograph of Jean and Milly was sent to Jean, framed and signed by the Author; a lovely momento of an enjoyable day. Jean Goodenough Food, Farming and Countryside - Brandsby made an afternoon visit to the Yorkshire Baker in Malton, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cranswick PLC. We were given a warm welcome by the Site Manager who gave us a presentation on Cranswick. Next came the tasting kitchen, what a treat! We heard the history of the factory and were shown samples from their production lines. Members were then invited to taste sausage rolls, quiche, meat pies - including a vegan flan still in the experimental stage overseen by their resident chef. Hair nets, overalls and wellies were made available (what a glamorous lot) and we were then given a comprehensive tour of the factory (actually more an enormous kitchen, substitute stainless steel shovels for wooden spoons!). Members were fascinated as they witnessed the making of the puff pastry with so much butter and so much enjoyment from a contented workforce. Members were delighted to watch their promotional video tracking the work they are doing to eliminate plastic waste from this particular factory. A very successful result from an enthusiastic team. An informative yet fun-packed afternoon. We left with huge grins on our faces and special goodie bags for supper.
