3 Slopes & Trails Page 3 CLUB NEWS State of the Club by Mel Stiles Our usual annual reorganization meeting, summer board meeting and picnic were very successful thanks to the hard work of our new VP, Dave Singer. Twenty-three Buck Ridgers attended the meeting and picnic at Ridley Creek State Park where we enjoyed some great company, good food and oh yes; we did get some Club business done too. Retirees from several positions in the club left a few vacancies that we need members to step up to the plate and fill. We need a canoeing chairperson to replace Dan Jones; a programs person to replace Kay Schmader; and a person to handle the refreshments at the general meetings. Several other positions were filled at the meeting. Mary Ann Thomas resumed her role as EPSC Representative from Dan Aronson who had filled in for her during her term as EPSC President. Thanks to Mary Ann for representing our club at the council level and to Dan for filling in while she was away. Mary Ann Popma volunteered to replace retiring Sally Lewis as membership chair. Thank you, Mary Ann, for stepping up and to Sally for many years of dedication to our club. Our short hikes program, run for many years by George Weidersum, will be chaired by Jim Calkins. George has decided it is time to reduce his activity level in that program; however, we still may see him on some of the easier hikes. Thanks to George for many years of dedication, interesting hikes, fresh air and exercise. Susan Hearn volunteered to chair our bicycling committee, replacing Marvelene Richards after a long tenure in that position -- thank you Susan for taking over the bicycling chair. Marv and Keith are retiring from their respective careers and relocating to Newport Vermont. We wish them all the luck in their new home and a long and happy retirement and big thanks for all of the years of dedicated service to our club. Lydia Hill, the web chair, has moved the Buck Ridge web site to a new server and is beginning to introduce some changes the old site should redirect to the new, or go directly to buckridgeskiclub.org. distribution of the newsletter is slowly improving. A general will normally be sent 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting date with the newsletter as a pdf attachment. Members requesting it should make sure that mail from amf72@verizon.net OR from rcmgr@snip.net is not being blocked, and that there is no authentification requirement on incoming mail from these addresses. The newsletter may also be downloaded directly from the web site, usually a few days after the distribution. Of course, any mem- (Continued on page 6) New Members There are several new members to announce since the last general meeting. Please welcome: Frank Hanni 310 Hidden Farm Drive Exton, PA hannifrank@comcast.net / Wayne Mackin 55 Grand Banks Circle Marlton, NJ mackintax@gmail.com / Don and Darcy Hamlin (address not available) Lodge Update by Mel Stiles From the Lodge meeting on May 9, 2007, the committee approved 2 changes to the Lodge use policy as outlined below: 1. Cancellation Policy: Motion made by Tom, seconded by Jalna, for a lodge cancellation policy as follows: If a club member does not show for a reserved date, or shortens their stay on a trip, a credit for another day will be issued in lieu of a cash refund. Any credit issued must be used by September 30 following the date of issuance. 2. Guest Use: Motion made by Lydia, seconded by- Joan to amend the guest usage policy as follows: There will be no guest children age 6 and under during weekends in February and March. Members are to be reminded they are responsible for all guests. There will also be two work parties this year one in summer for major construction work, and another in early fall (September 28-30) for construction wrap-up and routine maintenance items to get ready for ski season. In addition to ongoing renovation in the lower kitchen & bathroom, a new demand style water heater will be installed. This should prove less costly to operate in the long term, take up less space, and not require descending to the basement to set when you are first to arrive. (See page 6 for the report on the first work party) At the BRSC summer Board meeting, approval was granted to transfer funding from the club activities treasury to the Lodge for a new hot water heater and new refrigerator (lower kitchen) in the amount of $2000. The Club capital fund is down to $608 and would not be enough for this year's needs.

5 Slopes & Trails Page 5 Rafting the Lehigh What a beautiful day in the Poconos! Warm sun, warm water, light breeze and plans to raft the Lehigh perfect! We had the ultimate guide Dan Jones. Unfortunately, he did not have the ultimate crew. Having seven people in a five-man raft does not bode well for your success on the river; however, we all had some experience and the day was going well. We did sweeps and draws and paddling and reverse paddling, a little eddying. Everything was starting to feel pretty good. We thought we were making Dan proud. And then well let s just say it inspired us to write new lyrics to We Will Rock You! Please sing along. Dan you re the man, we do what you say Rafting on the river with our friends today We got mud on our feet mud on the seat Steering that raft is no small feat We will, we will ROCK YOU We will, we will ROCK YOU The rapids are ahead, they re looking pretty wild The waves are churning and the river is riled We sweep from the left now everybody paddle Whooeee we re lifted right out of our saddle We will, we will ROCK YOU We will, we will ROCK YOU Looking up ahead now, what do we see A big old rock looking right at me We go up on the side and hang on tight But Dan and the raft are clear out of sight We just, we just ROCKED YOU We just, we just ROCKED YOU They waded up stream and forded across Came to our rescue, not a soul was lost We got back on the raft, went on our way Looked back at Dan and had this to say You just, you just ROCKED US You just, you just ROCKED US A grand time was had by all, right Dan? Dan? Oh, Dan? You did have a grand time, didn t you? Well, didn t you? Dan? Merle and Roni Roemer, Joe and Judie Sheffer, and Bill and Syd Rust send their sincere gratitude to Dan Jones for sharing his day and his craft with us for such a wonderful river adventure. Joe Sheffer provided a fine spread of gourmet fare back at the Sheffer Shalet! Jim and Pat Cassels joined us for the feast. Submitted by Syd Rust
6 Page 6 State of the Club (Continued from page 3) ber can request to receive it via hard copy. With it now being sent via 1st class mail, it is normally received in a more timely manner than the old bulk mailing. As we get ready to start our sixty-third year as a club, I would like to encourage all members to participate in our activities, use our lodge in Vermont, come out to our meetings and enjoy our programs, and get involved to support the great club we have. We are still going strong; however, without participation and new members, we will cease to exist. So bring a friend along, on an activity, or to a meeting and invite them to join and experience our great club! Woodbridge Lodge Work Trip The first of two work parties was held over the first weekend in August. At the mid-summer party, 8 participants made the trip. Many weeds were whacked, painting jobs completed, foundation lattice installed, and gourmet food prepared by Chef Joe Sheffer consumed. We even had homemade La Sheffer peach ice cream. Major construction included installation of the new on demand hot water heater and the unexpected replacement of the front steps. After three full work days, the trip was capped by a relaxing Sunday evening at Grout Pond, where a browsing moose put on a show for us. Installation of the water heater took a full three Water heater installation Slopes & Trails Replacement of the front steps came about unexpectedly on the first day of the work party. As we were preparing to paint the entry door, it became apparent that the wooden stairway to the door had some rot as the rot was cut away, more and more was exposed until the entire entry stairs were demolished! Terry McGinn ably undertook the reconstruction of the stairs until they could now be used to moor a yacht. Are you looking at me? days. The new unit hangs on the wall in the lower kitchen closet, not much larger than a big briefcase (the old one stuck up from the crawl space into the third bathroom!). With all hot water faucets turned on, the hot water held at a steady 118 degrees. The new unit should produce savings in our hot water heating costs, as it only heats water as it is used. It will also make going into the basement to adjust the water heater when you are first to arrive a thing of the past! New front entry steps After wearing out our knees and many sore muscles, we departed until the fall when odds and ends will be finished and the Lodge readied for the ski season. Thanks to Glenn Weisel for organizing the work party and providing support to our group of workers; Terry McGinn, George Fitzgerald, Lydia Hill, Dave Stern, Mike Fernandez and Mel Stiles. The next work party will be September to wrap up construction and prepare the lodge for ski season. There should still be some fall color left!
