2 Introduction Small museums continually search for innovative ideas to promote community history and to entice the public to visit their museums and historic places. In 2010 five Morris County groups conceived an idea designed to highlight their distinctive museums and historical properties. Housed in venerable buildings of local significance, each had a unique and fascinating story to share. Aptly called The Pathways of History Links to Each Other and to the Past, this two-day museum tour was a huge success. Now in its fifth year, the Pathways of History Museum Tour has grown to include 18 historic groups in Boonton, Boonton Township, Denville, Dover, Jefferson Township, Kinnelon, Lake Hopatcong, Mine Hill, Montville Township, Mount Olive, Mount Tabor, Parsippany, Pequannock Township, Randolph, Rockaway Township, Roxbury Township and Washington Township. These enthusiastic Pathways Tour participants are simultaneously opening their doors in welcome. Something extra special awaits you at each stop on this tour honoring history, community and friendship. Olive Road) Flanders The Mount Olive Baptist Church (then known as Schooley s Mountain Church) was formed in 1753 as an offshoot of the Morristown Baptist Church. The congregants were known as Rogerenes, a splinter sect. Tours Within the Tour Since we are presenting an extensive tour this weekend, and time will not permit a visit to every location, below are some suggested Tours Within the Tour which include charismatic museums, homes and historical properties of distinction. You may of course select your own destinations. Wherever your path takes you, we know you will enjoy your tour. Events in Mount Olive Township Several buildings have housed the congregation at this location. The current building was started in 1855 and dedicated in 1856, with the apse added in 1870 along with a painted canvas ceiling. In 1890 the name changed to its current form. In 1895 the interior was redecorated in a Victorian color scheme, darkening wood, and covering the painted canvas ceiling with a tin ceiling. In the 1940 s the original windows were replaced with stained glass. A major storm damaged the tall steeple in 1950, leading to the steeple being shortened. By 1970 the congregation outgrew the current church and moved to a new building up the street, only using the old church for youth activities. By 1990 the building was rarely used, and continued to deteriorate. The 1837 schoolhouse was used until the 1920 s, then used for the church youth programs until the 1970 s. By 2004 the church was in sad shape, with major roof leaks. The Township negotiated an open space purchase that included the church, cemetery and the 1837 Academy building. Since that time, grants through the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust have produced all documentation to support the restoration of the buildings. A major project to replace the roof, rebuild the steeple and replace the windows was completed. The remainder of the exterior is under construction in Plans are completed for the interior phase. 4 1 Parsippany Historical & Preservation Society Bowlsby-DeGelleke House 320 Baldwin Road, Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills Parsippany The Bowlsby-DeGelleke house is a one-and-a-half story clapboard-sided farmhouse. It was built in two stages by George Bowlsby, Jr. (c and 1820). Originally the front entrance was on the right side. An addition to the right of the door resulted in a central entrance appearance. It has two chimneys, one at each gable end. The central hallway runs from the main entrance to the rear of the house, and contains a mid-victorian staircase to the second fl oor, and stairs to the basement. On either side of the hallway are two interconnecting rooms. The left (west) side contains a front parlor with a fi replace and a back room. Both have wide oak fl ooring. The right (east) side of the house contains a dining room with wide pine fl ooring, and the kitchen with replaced wide pine fl oorboards. The west side of the second fl oor originally was one large storage room. Walls were added c to create two bedrooms. The kitchen was also modernized but still has a hand water pump from a cistern in the cellar. Come and see Native American artifacts, antique farm equipment and learn about local farms. A house tour will introduce inhabitants of the Bowlsby- DeGelleke house from the past, and a slide show will show the process of restoration of the farmhouse. The Museum is open by appointment only. 3

5 2 Mount Tabor Historical Society J. Smith Richardson History House 32 Trinity Place, Mount Tabor Built in 1873 for J. Smith Richardson, this historic house enjoys an enviable location directly on Trinity Park, which was the religious center and the heart of Mount Tabor. Mount Tabor was founded as a post-civil War permanent Camp Meeting ground. The History House is a small-scale 19th century Folk Victorian Camp Meeting cottage. Travel back to another era and see what it was like to spend a summer camp meeting style in the cottage of a prominent family in the early community. Open on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 12:00 4:00 PM or by appointment by calling or us at MTHS@MountTaborNJ.org. Visit our website at for more information about the Mount Tabor Historical Society. Events in Mount Tabor Guided tours of the History House Hear the histories of the Mount Tabor community and the Richardson family. The interior of the cottage is highly preserved as relatively few changes were made over the years. Downstairs there are front and back parlors separated by an arch and a kitchen in the back. Please take note of the original decorative trompe l oeil painting on the wood panels in the parlors. Great care was taken when it was painted over the years so as not to disturb the original decorative leaf motif. If you look carefully, you ll notice the shadow on the leaf changes depending on its relation to light from a window. In the bay window we feature a c octagon lamp table by Charles Rohlfs. His workshop in Buffalo, New York was known for artistic furniture. This is an early piece, transitioning into the Arts and Crafts style; with the decorative fretwork on the sides and the octagon shape, it is ideally suited for the gingerbread cottages of Mount Tabor. The impressively large floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows in the front parlor swing open to take advantage of the summer breezes and also to better enjoy the outdoors in this wooded setting. When looking out at Trinity Park from the front porch you will appreciate the prominent location this cottage enjoys. Imagine being able to listen to the Camp Meeting sermons from the comfort of your porch! Guided Walking Tour of Trinity Park at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM Take a guided stroll around Trinity Park to learn about the founding of this Methodist Camp Meeting; our unique architectural styles including elaborate gingerbread cottages; and the three octagon community buildings located on the park. 6 3 Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation 25 Cooper Road, Denville The entire fifty-three acres of the Ayres/Knuth Farm were listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in The farm derives its architectural significance from the number and quality of the buildings which remain on the site. This farm complex, which has undergone only minor changes since the late 19th century, is one of the last surviving examples of the agrarian landscape of buildings and fields that in 1850 occupied over 84% of Morris County s acreage. The Ayres/Knuth historic site derives its name from two families who owned the property for approximately 90 years each. When David Garrigus daughter, Hannah, married Daniel Ayres in 1800 he gave 105 acres of his farm to the couple on which to build a home. Anna and Martin Knuth purchased the farm in 1906 moving their family from a nearby farm. The area would not be called Denville until The farm is believed to be the County s sole surviving farm with a significant number of original outbuildings extant. Farmstead structures predating the Knuths include: a tenant house, office, barn/ice house, two chicken coops, a corn crib, two spring houses, a four-seater out house, smoke house, stone ramp to a banked barn lost in a fire in 1936 and carriage barn with blacksmith forge. The farmhouse, a prime example of rural vernacular housing, has portions dating from the 1700 s through 1900 s. The ruins of the Billy Ayres Distillery mentioned in Munsell s History of Morris County remain in the industrial archeological site. Many noted names in Morris County history are associated with the site such as Hill, Budd, Stickle, Cooper, Crane, Jackson, Bellars and Morris. On October 27, 2011 the Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation hosted the County of Morris Open Space Preservation Celebration marking 20,000 acres of land preserved through the County s Open Space, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. It was selected because it has the four key components: history, farming, passive and active recreation. The Township of Denville purchased the property in 1996 with one of the largest County grants at the time, targeting those purposes. The Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation, Inc., often called the steward of the farm, leases the historic farm complex, prehistoric encampments and the industrial archeological site portion. This nonprofit s mission is to engage in activities which focus on the protection, preservation, restoration and enhancement of the historical, agricultural and environmental aspects of a multi-use open space facility. The active farming component supports the historic designation with 200 years of continuous farming. 7 4 Historical Society of Old Randolph Brundage House 630 Millbrook Avenue, Randolph The parcel of property upon which the Brundage house sits today was part of a much larger tract purchased in the 1700 s by David Trowbridge, whose family originally emigrated from England and eventually settled in Morris County. The original property was extensive. Eventually, portions began to be sold off and the acreage upon which the farmhouse is located became a focal point for both the Trowbridges and the Brundages, who were subsequent owners. The home s existing farmhouse gable-front and wing is believed to have been constructed in the late 1860 s by D. A. Trowbridge (David Austin), a great-great grandson of the original property owner. The proliferation of railroads at that time allowed lumber to become readily available locally, and led to much change in construction techniques for folk dwellings. The abundance of timber also made it easier and less expensive to add on to existing structures. Several outbuildings as well as other houses existed on the property at various times. Many children were born in the house, and were often part of large families numbering as many as 14. It is believed that the house and property stayed within the extended Trowbridge family until the early 20th century, often having been sold back and forth to, or inherited by, in-laws, relatives and descendants. The property has a history of being farmed by many generations of Trowbridges; gardens, orchards and fi elds dotted the landscape up until 2000, when the property became a township recreational facility. The family for whom the house is now named bought the property in the early 1920 s. Charles Brundage, a Dartmouth College and Carnegie Institute graduate, was an investment banker with a sense of civic responsibility. In 1932, he founded the investment fi rm of Brundage, Story and Rose in New York. He served as a trustee on boards both locally and in New York, and initiated the fi rst zoning regulations in Randolph during his tenure on the newly-formed planning board. His most notable contributions to his community came in the form of donations of land for use as parks James Andrews Park and Brundage Park and he was a trustee of the Charles E. and Edna T. Brundage Charitable Scientifi c and Wildlife Conservation Foundation. The last occupants of the house were William B. Cater, Jr., a grandson of Edna Brundage, and his wife Eileen. A white picket fence once surrounded the house, and the front entrance appears to be on the north side of the house, rather than on the street side. It is not known when the brick section of the house was built. The museum is open Sundays from 1:00 4:00 PM, April through November (except Mother s Day). Events in Old Randolph Your tour of the Brundage House features the following devoted to different eras and aspects of life in Old Randolph: Mannequins in Revolutionary War period costumes greet visitors in the Lobby A room exhibiting typical duties and tools of home and hearth, as well as the early religions of the area is through the Lobby, bearing left into the former Parlor of the House Antique tools, equipment and collections illustrating Randolph s industrial and agricultural phases from the 1700 s 1900 s are exhibited in the middle of the House; represented are former iron mines, farms, ice houses, forges and cooperages A period-costumed schoolmarm oversees a classroom exhibit featuring antique desks, old-time primers, slates, books and the essential woodstove A new Mining Room exhibit gives the visitor the impression of what a miner saw and worked in while hundreds of feet below the earth s surface in the various mines located within Randolph The tour concludes with an exhibit of antiques, maps and ephemera of the Mt. 8 5 Ferromonte Historical Society of Mine Hill Bridget Smith House 124 Randolph Avenue, Mine Hill Constructed c by Irish miners named James and Thomas Maloney, the Bridget Smith House is a two-family iron miner s dwelling that was typical throughout the northern New Jersey Highlands during the iron boom of the 19th century. It is a four-bay, two-story, wood-frame house with a side-gable roof; a rear addition was built in the 1860 s. In 1879, the house was sold to a cousin of the Maloney brothers, Bridget Smith, a miner s widow, for whom the house is named. She resided in one side of the house and rented the other to another widow. Bridget s daughter and son-in-law renovated the house to be single-family in the late 19th century. In 1912 the family rented the house to Jesse and Ida McConnell. Ida lived there until she was 98 having resided in the house for 77 years. It is Ida s simple lifestyle that preserved the house in its unimproved state. The descendants of Bridget Smith deeded the house to the Township of Mine Hill in 1993 for the purpose of interpreting the history of Mine Hill during the occupancy of Bridget Smith. The Bridget Smith House was individually listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1997, the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and was recently included on the New Jersey Women s Heritage Trail. In the last fi fteen years, the Township and Historical Society undertook an exterior restoration and structural stabilization of the building with funding from the New Jersey Historic Trust Fund, Morris County and the Township. Little has been done to the interior of the building and it now needs certain cosmetic and structural repairs. The Township of Mine Hill and the Ferromonte Historical Society have currently applied to the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust for a grant to address the interior restoration of the historic home. 9 6 Dover Area Historical Society Dr. Condit House 55 West Blackwell Street, Dover The Dover Area Historical Society (DAHS) was founded on May 4, Its museum is located at 55 West Blackwell Street, right in the historic district of Dover. The 1890 s Colonial Revival home was built in the area that was then called Doctors Row. The house s fi rst tenant was Dr. Condit, whose home and practice were there. It later became the home and offi ce for other local doctors until becoming the property of the First Presbyterian Church, which now leases the property to the DAHS. The Museum s mission is to showcase the rich history of Dover. In 1722 John Jackson arrived and built an iron forge and a log cabin; this fi rst humble building marked the founding of Dover. The iron rich hills, the Rockaway River water source and the plentiful woods made the Dover area a mecca for the iron industry. In 1825 two New York developers, Henry McFarlan and Joseph Blackwell, saw the potential of Dover s ideal location. They mapped out Dover s streets and began to sell business lots. Also in 1825, the Morris Canal began to be dug through Dover. The town, which was the midpoint of this waterway, would boast the largest basin along the canal. The coming of the trains brought even more business and prosperity. Dover also became a center for entertainment, housing three live theatres and attracting entertainers and vaudeville acts from around the world. Into the 20th century, factories and mills joined the already thriving businesses. Dover attracted workers from Europe, South America, Puerto Rico and other locales to work in the new factories. Today DAHS continues to celebrate the diversity of Dover past, present and future. The DAHS welcomes the community to its Museum House and meetings on the third Tuesday of each month. Interesting PowerPoint presentations are shown featuring Dover s long and rich history. The three-story Museum, which houses hundreds of photos, books and artifacts, also hosts open houses, special events, organizations, school groups and an Outreach history program. The popular quarterly newsletter is sent to over 400 members from around the country. And, most important, DAHS works to protect and preserve the treasures of Dover. The Museum is open to the public on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM and designated Sundays from April through October and by appointment. 10 7 Historical Society of Rockaway Township Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House 629 Mount Hope Road, Rockaway Township The Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House was built in 1772 by Colonel Jacob Ford, Jr. prior to his construction of the Ford Mansion in Morristown, which served as Washington s Headquarters from December 1779 to June Both were in the Georgian style of architecture. Though both have striking similarities, the Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House construction consisted of thick walls of native stone. The kitchen wing was built at the east end of the house and Faesch s counting room was located in the now missing west side of the house. Notable features include: original trompe l oeil paneling (c ) in the fi rst fl oor hallway, original cabinetry in the second story bedrooms and a smoke house located in the attic. From , Ford leased the house and the adjoining property to John Jacob Faesch, a Swiss ironmaster who produced supplies and munitions for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. So important were the Mount Hope Iron Works that Hessian prisoners captured at Trenton were released by General George Washington to work under Faesch. Faesch was recognized as a patriot who served as a civic leader, Common Pleas Judge and as a Morris County delegate to the New Jersey State Convention that ratifi ed the United States Constitution. The efforts of the Historical Society of Rockaway Township (HSRT) resulted in the house being included on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1973 and 1974, respectively. In 1984, Rockaway Township purchased the Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House site and leased it to the HSRT, which has since assumed leadership for safeguarding the house and spearheading its restoration. The ongoing restoration has been made possible with funding from private donations, AT&T Matching Gifts, and grants from the F.M. Kirby Foundation, New Jersey Community Development Block Grant, New Jersey Historic Trust and the Morris County Preservation Trust Fund. This support has fi nanced signifi cant exterior stabilization and restoration projects. Future goals include the reconstruction of the west wing to house ADA-compliant facilities and mechanical systems; and the reconstruction of the kitchen chimney for open hearth cooking demonstrations. 11 8 Montville Township Historical Society Henry Doremus Dutch Stone House 490 Main Road (Route 202), Towaco General George Washington occupied the lower room on the west end of this house (left side, viewed from the front of the house) from June 25 through 27, 1780 during the American Revolutionary War. General Washington was accompanied by 40 aides (including Alexander Hamilton, Tench Tilghman and Robert Hanson Harrison) and 2,000 Continental Army soldiers while retreating after the Battle of Springfi eld. The visit is documented by a $40 payment made to Mrs. Doremus in General Washington s expense account. Washington sent three letters from the house (Alexander Hamilton wrote one) and received nine letters during his stay. His soldiers stayed in the Doremus Tavern across the road and camped in the farm s fi elds. In 1781, as General Rochambeau and his troops of 5,000 men marched south for what would become the last major battle of the American Revolution, the troops rested in the orchard of this farm and patronized the Doremus Tavern. The farm house and tavern were eye witnesses to all the military traffi c in the area during the Revolutionary War! The Henry Doremus Dutch Stone Farmhouse was built c Its addition was built c The house was never plumbed, wired, electrifi ed or heated and the site retains signifi cant original architectural fabric. This house is a superb example of vernacular Dutch-American architecture that illustrates how the Dutch in America built houses. These Dutch Stone Houses were built in three states: New Jersey, New York and Delaware. The house contains a very signifi cant Dutch architectural feature a jambless fi replace and its double front entry doors are also signifi cant. The Henry Doremus Dutch Stone House was restored in 2009 with grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and the New Jersey Historic Trust. The site was recorded by HABS (Historic American Building Survey) in The property is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places individually and as part of the Dutch Stone Farmhouses thematic district. The site is also designated on the Montville Township list of historic properties and is included in the Crossroads of the American Revolution Greenway. Out kitchens were built to lessen fire hazards from open hearth cooking and, in the summer, to avoid cooking odors and heat in the main house. Built c. 1780, this structure is believed to be the last remaining detached Dutch stone out kitchen in Morris County. The site is unaltered, retains signifi cant original architectural fabric and has not been modernized or attached/incorporated into the main house as many out kitchens have been. The out kitchen retains its original hardware, beehive oven and four-foot cooking crane. Restored in 2007 with grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund, the out kitchen was recorded by HABS (Historic American Building Survey) in The property is designated on the Township local register, listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, and also located within the Crossroads of the American Revolution Greenway. 13 10 Boonton Historical Society and Museum Boonton Museum at the Dr. John Taylor House 210 Main Street, Boonton This building was originally a private home built for Dr. John Taylor and his wife, Adelaide T. Kanouse. John L. Kanouse gave his daughter and her husband this lot as a Christmas gift in Most likely, it was an enticement to get his family to move closer to him, because they had been living in Succasunna and Mount Arlington where Dr. Taylor had practiced medicine for 15 years. The Taylors returned to Boonton and had this brick house built. Dr. Taylor continued his medical practice here. In 1901, Adelaide s parents came to live with them until her father died in 1905 and her mother in John L. Kanouse was one of Boonton s most prominent citizens. In addition to being a successful businessman, he was elected Superintendent of Public Schools and held the offi ce for twenty years. He was instrumental in establishing the fi rst free school in Morris County located here in Boonton. He served in the State Legislature and Board of Chosen Freeholders and as Associate Judge of Morris County and Tax Collector of Boonton. Dr. Ellery Peck worked with Dr. Taylor in this building as an associate for seven years. Then in 1917 Dr. Peck went to serve in WWI and Dr. Taylor moved to Chula Vista, CA. After the war, the returning soldiers formed American Legion Post #124. Subsequently, the Mayor and Aldermen purchased the building from the Post and dedicated it as a permanent memorial to veterans and a home for Post #124. The Legion also offered space to the Boonton Historical Society. On November 11, 1980, the Society opened its museum on the second fl oor. Ten years later, the building was closed to the public and extensive restoration work was performed by both professional tradesmen and some tireless volunteers. The building reopened in Events in Boonton summer walking series, discusses the commerce/business of Boonton, as well as the history and architecture of the buildings. 14 11 Boonton Historical Society and Museum Miller-Kingsland House 445 Vreeland Avenue, Boonton This property was originally part of a tract of 231 acres purchased in 1728 for 85. It sits on a 2.5-acre wooded lot and includes an historic frame house dating from 1740, and a barn. It is the oldest recorded house in Boonton and is listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The property sits on a beautiful wooded landscape with a stream fl owing through it. Only three families have owned this house, each of whom added to the structure. The original one-room Dutch Wing purchased by Johannes Miller in 1740; federal addition with gambrel roof by Isaac Kingsland c. 1798; and the latest addition by Mae and Alex Fowler who purchased the house in Much of the original home still exists including the Dutch architecture, which is very rare in the northeastern United States; a large cooking fi replace and beehive oven, with date stone; the original crane and fi re back in the living room fi replace; and an original staircase railing, wood trim and wide plank fl oors. In an effort to preserve this property, the Town of Boonton was successful in securing a grant for $1 million from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and a further $300,000 in Green Acres Funding. The original owners and their descendents are recorded by Alex Fowler in his book Splinters from the Past. Although this fascinating book of local architecture is out of print, the Historical Society has several copies for sale. Events in Boonton The Miller-Kingsland House Marionette Shows at 2:00 PM Saturday & Sunday The last Kingsland descendant to live in Boonton s oldest recorded home, the Miller-Kingsland House, was Mabel Kingsland Head. Mabel and her husband Cedric, established the Kingsland Marionettes. Touring the country from coast to coast, their puppetry performances were well known, putting on such shows as Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp and Alice in Wonderland as well as scenes from Shakespeare and other well-loved stories. Playing to over 200 audiences annually, Mabel and Cedric built and acquired over 700 marionettes. They often followed performances with demonstrations and lectures, presenting a general view of puppetry illustrated by their elaborate private collection of historical puppet fi gures, many of which were museum pieces. We have prepared a special exhibit of marionettes and marionette history to celebrate the Kingsland Marionettes and Boonton s connection to this age-old form of entertainment. 15 12 Historical Society of Boonton Township Oscar A. Kincaid Home of History 591 Powerville Road, Boonton Township Please join the Historical Society of Boonton Township in celebrating the completion of the restoration of the Oscar A. Kincaid Home of History! In 1785 Adam Miller, Jr. and Anna De Mouth Miller, his wife, built the earliest section of the dwelling. Today it is the second oldest frame building indigenous to Boonton Township. The little house did not face the road, because at that early date there was no designated road to the property. John Decker, Oscar Kincaid, Jr. s great-great-grandfather, purchased the home and forge site in 1833 from then owner William Scott. Forge man and farmer, John Decker became a man of substance, adding extensive acreage to his original purchase. His forge iron came from the Hibernia mines, and the shipments from his forge to New York were made via the Morris Canal. John Decker enlarged the small, original house in 1837 when the side-hall, main section was added. The addition s most remarkable feature is the idiosyncratic portrait created in spiteful retaliation by a dismissed contractor. This decoration is now considered a unique example of naïve and whimsical folk art. Amazingly, throughout the years of occupancy as a family home since 1837, the hallway decoration has never been painted over. In 1938, Mr. Kincaid Sr. entered the dairy business and added a room and a large walk-in cooler to house his new endeavor. By 1944, the Kincaids had reverted to general farming and adopted the name Valley Farm by which the house and property are still recognized today. In 1980, it received the prestigious Century Farm Award given by the New Jersey Agricultural Society, the oldest farm organization in the country. Oscar A. Kincaid, Jr., a well-loved mayor of Boonton Township, died in November The Historical Society of Boonton Township, with the enthusiastic support of members, friends and neighbors, purchased the house and road stand in March Under its stewardship, restoration of the house has now been completed with Township support, private donations and grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund. Used for local history programs and exhibitions, the Oscar A. Kincaid Home of History is also a popular venue for community events, fundraisers and art exhibits. 16 13 L Ecole Kinnelon Museum 25 Kiel Avenue, Kinnelon The first Meadtown School was built in 1839 in the fi elds below Wilton Mead s house. It served the community until 1873 when a larger, more modern school was built on the property now known as L Ecole Kinnelon Museum. This new school s single room held approximately 40 to 50 pupils. The Meadtown School served the children of the community until 1925, when a new, two-room school built of native stone was constructed. The Meadtown School was also used as a meeting place, including the fi rst organizational meeting of the Borough of Kinnelon. Sunday school classes were also held there. Around 1930, the little schoolhouse caught the eye of a young medical doctor from New York City, Doctor Helen Miller. Dr. Miller affectionately called the place L Ecole, the French word for school. At first, Dr. Miller visited L Ecole as a retreat from her busy practice and clinical work in New York City. By the late 1930 s, her visits became more frequent and she began additions that would turn L Ecole into her primary residence. As local residents got to know and respect Dr. Miller, they began to appear at her doorstep with their medical problems. As time went by, more and more residents began to see Dr. Miller, convincing her that it was time to establish part of her practice in Kinnelon. In 1954, Dr. Miller added two examination rooms and an offi ce to her home at L Ecole to keep up with her growing practice. In 1963, she constructed a medical building on adjacent property and encouraged other New York City physicians to practice in this area. Upon her death in 1990, Dr. Miller bequeathed L Ecole to the Borough of Kinnelon. It was Dr. Miller s wish that the old schoolhouse would benefi t the community that had come to mean so much to her. From pupils to politicians to patients, L Ecole has met the needs of local citizens for well over a century. Today, L Ecole continues to serve the community as a museum chronicling and celebrating our local history and traditions. We invite you to come and view the collection of early 19th century farming implements mostly from local Mead and Smith farms. In addition, we have an extensive collection of maps, photographs, artifacts and memorabilia throughout the museum including the development of the Francis S. Kinney Estate (now Smoke Rise) and the summer retreat created by Frank Fay and his son (now Fayson Lakes). As you walk through our museum and former home of Dr. Helen Miller, you will be able to glimpse into one of her examination rooms and see some of her personal memorabilia; and in our Meadtown classroom exhibit antique desks, original report cards, primers, slates, books and a cast iron stove create the atmosphere of a bygone age. Of particular interest is our collection of Kinnelon High School yearbooks which is available for browsing. At 1:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday, Melissa Andes will present a discussion on genealogy. Have you ever longed to delve into the depths of your family history? Have you been fascinated by family stories or favorite recipes passed down through the generations? Were your ancestors colonial or royalist? Learn how even the most humble beginnings can result in a wealth of information. Sources as close as the local library, museum, and news commentary, or as vast as the Internet, may yield results. As Ms. Andes guides us through her approach to genealogical discovery, learn how one novice s search for her family history resulted in a windfall of information about the Doremus family; and how another budding genealogist wrote her own book about the Kayharts, another founding family of our area. 18 15 Jefferson Township Historical Society George Chamberlain House 315 Dover-Milton Road, Jefferson Township In the 1870 s Amos Chamberlain, a resident of Milton Village, built another home on his property for his son George and his bride-to-be, Ruth Elizabeth Speaker. After their marriage in 1874, they moved into the new house on Dover-Milton Road and soon purchased it from Amos. They had three sons, two of whom grew to adulthood Raymond and Archie. The boys were raised in the home and attended school locally. The family remained in residence into the early 1900 s. In later decades, the house was rented to various families in the extended Chamberlain family. In 1960, the house was purchased by the Friends of the Library. After refurbishing it for public usage, it functioned as the Violet Riker Library for 19 years. When the new Jefferson Township Library was built, the Township acquired the house and the Historical Society, known as the Jefferson Township Committee for 76, established it as a museum. With the Township as its new owner, the fi rst renovation began in 1982 with matching grants from the community. Floors and walls were restored along with all the windows and the two doors. Most of the work was done by local craftsmen. After two years the building was opened as the Jefferson Township Museum. A second renovation began in Countless hours of research went into fi nding the correct colors and trims for the exterior and interior. A new sidewalk was put in to enable access to the rear of the building. In 2013, a patio and walkway were built to enhance the garden area. The lower level is the kitchen of the home. Floors and walls were scraped, sanded and painted with the same color as the original. It is now also the site of Miss Elizabeth s Shoppe where unique gifts, handcrafted and handmade local wares are sold. In its current form, it is a representation of life in Jefferson Township in the last quarter of the 19th century. Furnishings, artifacts, garments and interior decor refl ect the style of the times. 20 17 Roxbury Historic Trust, Inc. The King Store and King House Museums at Drakesville Historic Park Main Street, Ledgewood In 1827, to take advantage of the developing Morris Canal in Drakesville, Crane and Woodruff opened their general store. However, it was after 1837 before it started to prosper under the auspices of Theodore King s future father-in-law, Albert Riggs. Theodore married Emma Riggs and took over running the Store in 1873, soon amassing enough fortune to build the family home on the parcel next door. The Kings took up residence in 1878 and E. Louise was born in At this point Theodore launched into a major renovation of the Store, rejacketing it in stucco to resemble ashlar, and installing a fi ne slate roof with acanthus leaf brackets to hold the eaves. After Theodore s death at their winter home in Florida in 1928, his daughter, Louise, closed the Store with its merchandise intact, a time capsule until after her death in Her cousin, Russ Wack, photographed the interior before the store was dismantled. Roxbury Township purchased the site in 1984 with Green Acres funding. Both buildings saw decline until 1989, when the Roxbury Rotary Club stepped in to rescue the Store. The buildings were listed on the State and National Registers in By 2000 the Rotary set its sights on repairing the King House and the Roxbury Historic Trust, Inc. was formed to develop the museums. 21 18 Roxbury Township Historical Society Silas Riggs Saltbox House 213 Main Street, Ledgewood In 1708, the Leni Lenape Indians deeded a tract of land to English entrepreneurs who had been mining and forging east of here along the Whippany River. Travelling west, they discovered massive outcroppings of iron ore called suckasin by the Indians. Establishment of the village of Succasunna followed, forming the nucleus of the Township of Roxbury, designated in 1740 as one of the four original townships of Morris County. Village development took place on an Indian trail in the plains surrounded by iron rich hills; called the Sussex Turnpike by the English, it linked Morristown with Newton. This became Succasunna s Main Street with Cornelius Slaight s Tavern, a pre-revolutionary stage coach stop, (now a residence, at the corner of Main and Hillside Avenue) and the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna founded in Just west of Slaight s Tavern and on the other side of Main Street, a simple cottage of pre-revolutionary design and construction became home to Silas and Harriet (nee Rose) Riggs in the early 1800 s. Silas, from Mendham, operated a prosperous tannery here that produced leather pouches used to transport iron ore on horseback. He was instrumental in the development and operation of the Morris Canal. Threatened by demolition to make way for commercial development, the Riggs house was rescued in 1963 by the newly formed Roxbury Township Historical Society. The house was moved a half mile west to Main Street in the Ledgewood section of the Township to land donated by Silas and Harriet s great-granddaughter, Emma Louise King, daughter of Theodore King who operated the King Canal Store. Known locally as the Saltbox House because of the rear sloping addition giving it the architectural appearance of an old-fashioned salt container, the house was restored. Guided tours of Academy, cemetery and church exterior Exhibit of restoration to date and church history Light refreshments Mount Olive Township Historical Society Mount Olive Baptist Church & Cemetery, Mount Olive Academy 131 Flanders-Drakestown Rd (corner of Mt. Pass St. Jude Thaddeus RC Church, then bear right & continue on Mt. Olive Rd for 1.2 miles to end. The Baptist Church will be at corner. Turn right on Flanders-Drakestown Rd to park. 23 20 Washington Township Historical Society 6 Fairview Avenue, Long Valley The Washington Township Historical Society was formed to bring together people interested in the history of Washington Township and to promote a better appreciation of our American heritage. Our Museum is located in the former Union Schoolhouse in the center of Long Valley. Built in 1830 of local fi eldstone, although for a public purpose, it differs little from the domestic architecture of the era and refl ects the German folk tradition of stone houses that are common to Washington Township, also known as Long Valley. On October 27, 1775 an Indenture between Philip Weis and the Dutch Evangelical Reformed and Evangelical Lutheran Congregations, provided for the transfer of one acre of land for the building of a Union Church and stipulated that no other building was to be upon or built on said acre of land but the said church or meeting house and a schoolhouse. The Union Schoolhouse was built on this acre in 1830 and served as a school and meeting house until Since 1886 it has been used as a private dwelling, a public library and now an historical museum. The Union Church and Cemetery next door are noted by authors and historians Richard F. Veit and Mark Nonestied in their book New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones. The 18th century cemetery contains a collection of master carver John Solomon Teetzel s tombstones written in German fraktur-style lettering. Called German Valley until World War I, Long Valley was one of the three earliest settlements in Morris County, the others being Whippany and Pequannock. Washington Township was settled primarily from the west by German Protestants from the Palatinate who had landed in Philadelphia. Their infl uence can still be seen today in the local architecture and Germanic names. The Museum features exhibits of Native American artifacts, 18th century farm tools, an early schoolroom, and the famous Schooley s Mountain Spring and grand hotels from the 19th century. See the hotel register signed by President Grant in 1874 when he visited Schooley s Mountain with his daughter. Tour the historic colonial graveyard and see the ruins of the Old Union Church. The Museum is open on Sundays from 2:00 4:00 PM, Wednesdays from 10:00 AM 12:00 PM, and by appointment. For information or to join, contact us at or us at info@wthsnj.org. Visit our website at Events in Washington Township Enjoy music from the Roaring 20 s throughout the day with Sharon Kuechelmann and her portable Victrola. Sharon will play and interpret the music of that era while dressed in period clothing. Saturday only! Exhibits in the Museum: Native American Artifacts; Prominent Citizens of Washington Township; The Famous Schooley s Mountain Spring and Grand Hotels; 18th century clarinet played by a German Valley boy for the Marquis de Lafayette on his triumphal return visit to the United States in 1825; Hotel Register from The Belmont Hotel with President Grant s signature. Learn about the history of the High Bridge Branch of the Central Railroad of New Jersey which ran through the village for 100 years. During its heyday the trains served the iron mines in Morris County, carried passengers and transported farm products to the cities. Ask about the Hookerman who was said to haunt the local tracks. Tour the ruins and burial grounds of the Old Stone Union Church. Built in 1774 by skilled German stonemasons, the church was the center of the 18th century agrarian community. Hear stories of how the early settlers of German Valley worshipped and lived.
