3 2013 Introduction The Pathways of History Small museums continually search for innovative ideas to promote community history and to entice the public to visit their museums and historic places. In 2010 five enthusiastic Morris County groups conceived an idea designed to highlight their distinctive museums and historical properties. Housed in venerable buildings of local significance, each had a unique and fascinating story to share. Aptly called e Pathways of History Links to Each Other and to the Past, this two-day museum tour was a huge success. Now in its fourth year, the Pathways of History Museum Tour has grown to include 19 historic locations. The original five museums in Boonton, Boonton Township, Butler, Kinnelon and Montville Township, are honored to be joined this year by historical groups and their museums and buildings in Denville, Lake Hopatcong, Lincoln Park, Mine Hill, Mount Tabor, Pequannock Township, Randolph, Rockaway Township, Roxbury and West Milford. These enthusiastic Pathways Tour participants are simultaneously opening their doors in welcome. Something extra special awaits you at each stop on this tour honoring history, community and friendship. 5 1 Beavertown Historical Society Beavertown Museum The Beavertown Museum is located in the former town library, which was built in This building replaced the first library in town. Town residents determined they needed a library in 1920 and a librarian, Mrs. Barnes, offered a room in her home for the library s use. This library s first home was located in a stone house by the train station. As the library s needs grew, residents looked for a new site, which would accommodate more books and provide more room. David Benjamin, who lived on Main Street and was a lifelong resident, carpenter and builder, donated a plot of land located next to his property for the library. He also donated his services to build the library, finishing the foundation in May of 1923 and then proceeding to build the structure. He completed the work in the late summer of The new building was reported as having a most neat and attractive appearance, which is the rule with all the work of its builder (David Benjamin). Residents raised funds for the library s operation and materials with subscriptions, card parties and cake sales throughout the town while the building was constructed. The borough government began supporting the operation of the library in 1931 and has ever since. In 1965 the residents voted to operate the library as a free public library. The Beavertown Museum is operated by the Beavertown Historical Society which was founded in 1966 and took over the former library to house its archives, historical library and museum when the town library had moved to a new and larger building in It encourages an awareness of the history of Lincoln Park, once known as Beavertown, and the role of the Morris Canal in the social and economic life of this area. The museum s collection comprises over 50 cubic feet of records, artifacts, memorabilia, numerous photos, tax records, maps, books, newspapers, other documents, two Morris Canal lock models, Indian artifacts and farming implements illustrating Lincoln Park s tie to its rural past. A cable towrope from the Morris Canal is displayed on the front lawn illustrating Lincoln Park s link to the Morris Canal. The Beavertown Museum has been closed for renovations. The museum is now open to researchers by appointment; special tours are available upon request. The Beavertown Historical Society has periodic meetings in the museum. The Society plans to partially restore part of the Morris Canal as a walking trail to allow visitors to view the actual remnants of the Morris Canal as part of the Canal Society of New Jersey Morris Canal Greenway initiative. The area to be restored encompasses the Morris Canal watered basin from Windsor Drive to the Towaco boundary. The Beavertown Historical Society always welcomes new members! 6 2 Museum of Pequannock Township The Museum of Pequannock Township opened to the public in June of The Museum is housed in the former Pompton Plains Railroad Station, located at the corner of Evans Place and Jackson Avenue. The museum is owned by the Township of Pequannock and was restored in The Station was built shortly after the Montclair and Greenwood Lake Railroad was completed in It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 5, Regular passenger train service for the train station ended in 1963 although shuttles from Mountain View remained until Freight service to the station continued into the early 1980 s. The Museum staff educates the public about the history of the Township and is active in local historical preservation projects including material for the Township Museum. These materials include preparation of an historical walking tour guidebook and working toward the reprint of George Parr's book, History of Pequannock Township. In addition, the Museum presents physical artifacts, pictures and other items displaying the rich history of the Township. The Museum is open the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month from 12:00 3:00 PM. It is also open by appointment and for special events. For an appointment to tour the Museum at another day or time, or if you have something to donate or discuss, please contact the Historic District Commission at Events in Pequannock Township The Museum will present a display representing veterans of the Civil War connected to old Pequannock Township who are buried in the cemetery of the First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains. Information about their life in the military, their units and their life after the War will be included. This presentation represents the ongoing remembrance during the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, and the impact of the War and its aftermath on life in Pequannock. 7 Butler Museum 3 and Historical Committee at the Butler Police Department Community Room In order to continue as an active participant in The Pathways of History Tour while the museum building is closed, the volunteers of the Butler Museum will be using the Butler Police Department Community Room as an exhibit area. The community room was once the Council Chambers for the Borough of Butler and the building itself began as the Borough Hall and the Fire Department headquarters in In the late 1980 s, a new fire house was dedicated. This building was renovated and the Police Department moved into its new headquarters in On display will be a variety of the hard rubber industry products and the history of several of the community s major industries; photo, print and slide presentations on the largest industrial fire in the United States in 1957 which destroyed the Pequanoc Rubber Company; and photos and hands-on artifacts of the Statue of Liberty. You can step back in time while reading Butler High School yearbooks from 1918 and viewing vintage postcards and photos from the 1890 s to the 1940 s. Learn about the history of the Butler Borough Park and the fire house built in Where is our famous Wooden Fireman? We ll tell you about him and where you can find him. To supplement the available slide show of the early glory days of Butler, the museum will present a number of picture boards illustrating the Butler High School Fire in 1963; Butler Day at the 1964 World s Fair, New York City; the Pequannoc Rubber Company Fire in 1957; and 125 years of Main Street scenes. New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad Station: Borough of Butler Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, the New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad station in Butler was built between 1888 and The freight station was added in The railroad, serving both passenger traffic and freight deliveries, spurred the economic growth of the community, bringing in raw materials to the American Hard Rubber mill and leaving with finished products heading to world markets. The station has been owned and supported by the Borough of Butler since the early 1970 s when the museum was established as part of the 1976 National Bicentennial celebrations. Contained in the museum are exhibits that illustrate the social, political, educational, fraternal and business life of the community and its surroundings from the late 1800 s to the present day. Among the exhibits unique to the Butler Museum are the artifacts that pertain to the Statue of Liberty. Frederic August Bartholdi, the French sculptor who designed and built the statue, and Richard Butler, for whom this town was named, were close friends. Mr. Butler was an integral part of the committee that raised the necessary funds to construct the pedestal on which the statue stands. The Butler Museum remains closed for major renovations. The Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund has awarded funds for the Phase II renovation work and the Borough of Butler has supplemented the award with Borough funding. We will begin Phase II work in 2013, and look forward to planning a grand reopening in the Fall of 2014 when the station celebrates its 125th year. 8 4 L Ecole Kinnelon Museum The first Meadtown School was built in 1839 in the fields below Wilton Mead s house. It served the community until 1873 when a larger, more modern school was built on the property now known as L Ecole Kinnelon Museum. This new school s single room held approximately 40 to 50 pupils. The Meadtown School served the children of the community until 1925, when a new, two-room school built of native stone was constructed. The Meadtown School was also used as a meeting place, including the first organizational meeting of the Borough of Kinnelon. Sunday school classes were also held there. Around 1930, the little schoolhouse caught the eye of a young medical doctor from New York City, Doctor Helen Miller. Dr. Miller affectionately called the place L Ecole, the French word for school. At first, Dr. Miller visited L Ecole as a retreat from her busy practice and clinical work in New York City. By the late 1930 s, her visits became more frequent and she began additions that would turn L Ecole into her primary residence. As local residents got to know and respect Dr. Miller, they began to appear at her doorstep with their medical problems. As time went by, more and more residents began to see Dr. Miller, convincing her that it was time to establish part of her practice in Kinnelon. Events in Kinnelon Continuous video presentations on the history of Kinnelon Borough and L Ecole Kinnelon Museum. Enjoy some refreshments in the main meeting room at L Ecole before continuing on the museum tour. In 1954, Dr. Miller added two examination rooms and an office to her home at L Ecole to keep up with her growing practice. In 1963, she constructed a medical building on adjacent property and encouraged other New York City physicians to practice in this area. Upon her death in 1990, Dr. Miller bequeathed L Ecole to the Borough of Kinnelon. It was Dr. Miller s wish that the old schoolhouse would benefit the community that had come to mean so much to her. From pupils to politicians to patients, L Ecole has met the needs of local citizens for well over a century. Today, L Ecole continues to serve the community as a museum chronicling and celebrating our local history and traditions. The Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 4:00 PM. 25 Kiel Avenue, Kinnelon GPS: N, W From Rt. 287 North/South: Take Exit 52B (Butler/Rt. 23 North). 9 5 West Milford Township Heritage Committee West Milford Museum The West Milford Museum building was constructed just prior to the Civil War in the Gothic Revival style. Originally a Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) Church, the property and church were purchased in 1906 by several residents of West Milford including the Deghuee, Egbert and Voorhees families. In 1910, the owners deeded the church and property to the Township of West Milford to be used solely by the municipality. The building began its many years of service to the community when it became West Milford s Town Hall in It remained the Town Hall until 1958 when the present municipal building was constructed on vacant farmland across the road at 1480 Union Valley Road. From 1958 to 1987, the museum building functioned as the Town Hall Annex, housing the tax, building and other municipal departments. In addition, it served as civil defense headquarters and as a storage facility for equipment and records. A resurgence of interest in American history during the Bicentennial in 1976 led the Township of West Milford to designate the Town Hall Annex as the site for the future West Milford Museum. The West Milford Heritage Committee was established by resolution in 1985 to plan and implement the museum building s restoration, to collect documents and artifacts, to archive collections and oversee the museum s operations. The museum opened to the public in 2000 following extensive interior and exterior renovations. The West Milford Museum has an assortment of artifacts, photos and documents representing various themes such as farming, coins/currency, natural history, local industry, lifestyles, Civil War, WW I and II, quilts and Native American objects. The museum s Reminisce Series, scheduled at various times during the year, offers oral recitations by local residents as they share their memories about life in the good old days. A small collection of Jungle Habitat items are on display, as well as a collection of prints on Greenwood Lake taken from original oil paintings by Hudson River School artist, Jasper F. Cropsey. The West Milford Museum is open on Saturdays from 1:00 4:00 PM. For more information go to or contact the museum via at Museum@WestMilford.org. 10 6 Historical Society of Boonton Township Rockaway Valley United Methodist Church This year the Historical Society of Boonton Township is proud to partner with the Rockaway Valley United Methodist Church in a celebration of legend, fact and spirit. The beginning of the church society dates to 1785 when a group of the area s earliest settlers began meeting at the Jacob Demouth stone plantation house in the upper valley. That very same year, Adam Miller, Jr. and his wife Anna DeMouth Miller built the earliest section of the Oscar A. Kincaid Home of History*, the second oldest frame building indigenous to Boonton Township. Linked forever in history, it is truly appropriate that these two organizations should join together for the 2013 Pathways of History Tour. There is convincing evidence that meetings were held more or less regularly at Jacob Demouth s property until 1842 when the little white church in the valley was built on land given by James Dixon and his wife Eleanor. An old log school-house on the site, believed to be one of the earliest in old Pequannock, was demolished to make way for an unadorned, four-square building with clear glass windows. Records show that in 1894 the church at Rockaway Valley was improved by a substantial slate roof, a belfry and paneled interior work costing $540. In 1900, a group of members decided to further beautify the church by donating twelve, double-sashed, opal glass windows at a total cost of $72! The donors names or those of beloved ancestors were painted on the glass. Among those memorialized was John Decker, great-great-grandfather of Oscar Kincaid, who in 1837 enlarged the original home built by Adam and Anna DeMouth Miller. As a trustee and prominent member of the church community, John played a pivotal role in the construction of the church edifice. His first wife Deborah (Vanderhoof) Decker, his daughter Catherine Decker Kincaid and her husband Charles Kincaid are also among those memorialized. And so, our link continues. In the first decade of the 20th century the vestibule with its welcoming portal was added to the original building. A basement area, excavated to provide more useful space for the church, became the headquarters of the township s social life. Today, as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, the church continues to open its welcoming doors providing spiritual comfort and friendship to Boonton Township and its surrounding neighbors. Sunday morning worship, conducted by Rev. Dr. Carter Smith, is at 10:00 AM. The church can be reached at or rvumc@verizon.net. * The Oscar A. Kincaid Home of History has been owned and maintained by the Historical Society of Boonton Township since March 19, This year the iconic farmhouse is closed during Phase IV of a meticulous historical restoration funded with private donations and with grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The Society would like to thank the congregation of the Rockaway Valley United Methodist Church for once again, opening its portal in friendship and welcome. 38 Valley Road, Boonton Township GPS: 40 55' 42 N, 74 26' 10 W From 80/46 West: From Rt. 80 West, take Exit 39 to US 46 East toward Rt. 53/Denville. 11 7 Historical Society of Boonton Township Rockaway Valley Cemetery God s Acre The use of the present church site as an ancient Indian burial ground long predates its use as a church location. Legend and fact combine in tales that witches regularly brewed their magic in a huge cauldron whose sulphurous glow was often visible from a distance and caused wayfarers to detour by way of Taylortown Road rather than pass the cemetery on the direct road to Boonton. In the oldest section, immediately surrounding the church edifice, James Dixon s table-stone marker, the first in the graveyard, bears the date March 1, Although not of great antiquity or containing examples of ancient tombstone art, the Rockaway Valley Cemetery provides a rich genealogical legacy every old family from Ackerman to Zeak is on a memorial stone. In 1912 the Rockaway Valley Cemetery Association separated from the church to allow for the purchase of additional land to be used for cemetery purposes. Subsequent acquisitions by the Association were surveyed and laid out in neat plots over the next three decades. The Memorial Park Section was opened in 1954; the first burial in this newest area took place in The Association s thoughtful expansion over the years has preserved the graveyard as a place of special tranquil beauty. There are thirty-five Civil War Memorial Markers, many cenotaphs, honoring soldiers who lost their lives during the War Between the States. Veterans are honored each year with flags placed by local scouts and veteran organizations. The Rockaway Valley Cemetery is non-profit and non-denominational. The trustees and the cemetery s superintendent, all descendents of Boonton Township s early families, take special care in the preservation and maintenance of this sacred resting place. 12 8 Boonton Historical Society & Museum Boonton Museum This building was originally a private home built for Dr. John Taylor and his wife, Adelaide T. Kanouse. John L. Kanouse gave his daughter and her husband this lot as a Christmas gift in Most likely, it was an enticement to get his family to move closer to him, because they had been living in Succasunna and Mount Arlington where Dr. Taylor had practiced medicine for 15 years. The Taylors returned to Boonton and had this brick house built. Dr. Taylor continued his medical practice here. In 1901, Adelaide s parents came to live with them until her father died in 1905 and her mother in John L. Kanouse was one of Boonton s most prominent citizens. In addition to being a successful businessman, he was elected Superintendent of Public Schools and held the office for twenty years. He was instrumental in establishing the first free school in Morris County located here in Boonton. He served in the State Legislature and Board of Chosen Freeholders and as Associate Judge of Morris County and Tax Collector of Boonton. Dr. Ellery Peck worked with Dr. Taylor in this building as an associate for seven years. Then in 1917 Dr. Peck went to serve in WWI and Dr. Taylor moved to Chula Vista, CA. After the war, the returning soldiers formed American Legion Post #124. Subsequently, the Mayor and Aldermen purchased the building from the Post and dedicated it as a permanent memorial to veterans and a home for Post #124. The Legion also offered space to the Boonton Historical Society. On November 11, 1980, the Society opened its museum on the second floor. Ten years later, the building was closed to the public and extensive restoration work was performed by both professional tradesmen and some tireless volunteers. Over the years, Boonton has frequently been host to the entertainment industry. In the days of vaudeville and silent movies, Boonton s Main Street theatres welcomed such luminaries as Laurel and Hardy, Burns and Allen and a host of vaudeville acts and characters. In more recent years, Boonton was the venue for movie-making, TV advertising and episodes of the well-known Sopranos TV series. Unlike the venues highlighted in this exhibit no tickets are required for your very own front row seat! Be sure to take the opportunity to visit the Gift Shoppes at the Boonton Museum. Books by local authors, antique postcards and Boontonware, together with special purchase items and gift ideas for young and old, are available this weekend and throughout the year. 10

13 9 Boonton Historical Society & Museum Miller-Kingsland House This property was originally part of a tract of 231 acres purchased in 1728 for 85. It sits on a 2.5-acre wooded lot and includes an historic frame house dating from 1740, and a barn. It is the oldest recorded house in Boonton and is listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The property sits on a beautiful wooded landscape with a stream flowing through it. Only three families have owned this house, each of whom added to the structure. The original one-room Dutch Wing purchased by Johannes Miller in 1740; federal addition with gambrel roof by Isaac Kingsland c. 1798; and the latest addition by Mae and Alex Fowler who purchased the house in Much of the original home still exists including the Dutch architecture, which is very rare in the northeastern United States; a large cooking fireplace and beehive oven door, with date stone; the original crane and fire back in the living room fireplace; and an original staircase railing, wood trim and wide plank floors. In an effort to preserve this property, the Town of Boonton was successful in securing a grant for $1 million from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and a further $300,000 in Green Acres Funding. The original owners and their descendents are recorded by Alex Fowler in his book Splinters from the Past. Although this fascinating book of local architecture is out of print, the Historical Society has several copies for sale. 445 Vreeland Avenue, Boonton GPS: N, W From Boonton Museum: Take Myrtle Ave to Vreeland Ave. Turn right on Vreeland Ave and follow to bottom of hill. 14 10 MontvilleTownship Historical Society Henry Doremus Dutch Stone House During the American Revolutionary War, from June 25 through 27, 1780, General George Washington occupied the lower room on the west end of this house (left side, viewed from the front of the house). General Washington was accompanied by 40 aides (including Alexander Hamilton, Tench Tilghman and Robert Hanson Harrison) and 2,000 Continental Army soldiers while retreating after the Battle of Springfield. The visit is documented by a $40 payment to Mrs. Doremus in General Washington s expense account. Washington sent three letters from the house (Alexander Hamilton wrote one) and received nine letters during his stay. The soldiers stayed in the Doremus Tavern across the road and camped on the farm. In 1781, as General Rochambeau and his troop of 5,000 men marched south for what would become the last battle of the American Revolution, the troops rested in the orchard of this farm and patronized the Doremus Tavern. The farm house and tavern were eye witnesses to all the military traffic in the area during the Revolutionary War! The Henry Doremus Dutch Stone Farmhouse was built c Its addition was built c The house was never plumbed, wired, electrified or heated. The site retains significant original architectural fabric. This house is a superb example of vernacular Dutch-American architecture that illustrates how the Dutch in America built houses. These Dutch Stone Houses were built in only three states: New Jersey, New York and Delaware. While the house contains a very significant Dutch architectural feature the jambless fireplace its double front entry doors are also significant. The Henry Doremus Dutch Stone House was restored in 2009 with grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and the New Jersey Historic Trust. The site was recorded by HABS (Historic American Building Survey) in The property is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places individually and as part of a Dutch Stone Farmhouses thematic district. The site is historically designated in Montville Township. It is also included in the Crossroads of the American Revolution Greenway. Restoration of the house won the 2009 New Jersey State Historic Preservation award for preservation and restoration. 15 11 Montville Township Historical Society Nicholas Vreeland Dutch Stone Out Kitchen This structure was once part of a 180-acre working farm, purchased by Nicholas Vreeland and his wife, Catrina Van Duyne, in The out kitchen, house, saw mill, other out buildings and even a family cemetery were all integral parts of this farm. Out kitchens were built to lessen fire hazards from open hearth cooking and, in the summer, to avoid cooking odors and heat in the main house. Built c. 1780, this structure is believed to be the last remaining detached Dutch stone out kitchen in Morris County. The site is unaltered, retains significant original architectural fabric and has not been modernized or attached/incorporated into the main house as many out kitchens have been. The out kitchen retains its original hardware, beehive oven door and four-foot cooking crane. Restored in 2007 with grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund, the out kitchen was documented by HABS (Historic American Building Survey) in The property is designated on the Township local register, listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, and also located within the Crossroads of the American Revolution Greenway. 16 Mount Tabor 12 Historical Society J. Smith Richardson History House Built in 1873 for J. Smith Richardson, this historic house enjoys an enviable location directly on Trinity Park, which was the religious center and the heart of Mount Tabor. Mount Tabor was founded as a post-civil War permanent Camp Meeting ground. The History House is a small-scale 19th century Folk Victorian Camp Meeting cottage. Travel back to another era and see what it was like to spend a summer camp meeting style in the cottage of a prominent family in the early community. Open the 2nd Sunday of each month from 12:00 4:00 p.m. or by appointment by calling or us at MTHS@MountTaborNJ.org. Visit our website at for more information about the Mount Tabor Historical Society. Events in Mount Tabor Guided Tours of the History House Hear the histories of the Mount Tabor community and the Richardson family. The interior of the cottage is highly preserved as relatively few changes were made over the years. Downstairs there are front and back parlors separated by an arch and a kitchen in the back. Please take note of the original decorative trompe l'oeil painting on the wood panels in the parlors. Great care was taken when it was painted over the years so as not to disturb the original decorative leaf motif. If you look carefully, you ll notice the shadow on the leaf changes depending on its relation to light from a window. In the bay window we feature a c octagon lamp table by Charles Rohlfs. His workshop in Buffalo, New York was known for artistic furniture. This is an early piece, transitioning into the Arts and Crafts style; with the decorative fretwork on the sides and the octagon shape, it is ideally suited for the gingerbread cottages of Mount Tabor. The impressively large floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows in the front parlor swing open to take advantage of the summer breezes and also to better enjoy the outdoors in this wooded setting. When looking out at Trinity Park from the front porch you will appreciate the prominent location this cottage enjoys. Imagine being able to listen to the Camp Meeting sermons from the comfort of your porch. Guided Walking Tour of Trinity Park Take a guided stroll around Trinity Park to learn about the founding of this Methodist Camp Meeting, our unique architectural styles including elaborate gingerbread cottages and the three octagon community buildings located on the park. 17 13 Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation The entire fifty-three acres of the Ayres/Knuth Farm were listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in The farm derives its architectural significance from the number and quality of the buildings which remain on the site. This farm complex, which has undergone only minor changes since the late 19th century, is one of the last surviving examples of the agrarian landscape of buildings and fields that in 1850 occupied over 84% of Morris County s acreage. The Ayres/Knuth historic site derives its name from two families who owned the property for approximately 90 years each. When David Garrigus daughter, Hannah, married Daniel Ayres in 1800 he gave 105 acres of his farm to the couple on which to build a home. Anna and Martin Knuth purchased the farm in 1906 moving their family from a nearby farm. The area would not be called Denville until The farm is believed to be the County s sole surviving farm with a significant number of original outbuildings extant. Farmstead structures predating the Knuths include: a tenant house, office, barn/ice house, two chicken coops, a corn crib, two spring houses, a four-seater out house, smoke house, stone ramp to a banked barn lost in a fire in 1936 and carriage barn with blacksmith forge. The farmhouse, a prime example of rural vernacular housing, has portions dating from the 1700s through 1900s. The ruins of the Billy Ayres Distillery mentioned in Munsell s History of Morris County remains in the industrial archeological site. Many noted names in Morris County history are associated with the site such as Hill, Budd, Stickle, Cooper, Crane, Jackson, Bellars, Morris, etc. On October 27, 2011 the Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation hosted the County of Morris Open Space Preservation Celebration marking 20,000 acres of land preserved through the County s Open Space, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. It was selected because it has the four key components: history, farming, passive and active recreation. The Township of Denville purchased the property in 1996 with one of the largest County grants at the time, targeting those purposes. The Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation, Inc., often called the steward of the farm, leases the historic farm complex, prehistoric encampments and the industrial archeological site portion. This nonprofit s mission is to engage in activities which focus on the protection, preservation, restoration and enhancement of the historical, agricultural and environmental aspects of a multi-use open space facility. The active farming component supports the historic designation with 200 years of continuous farming. 18 14 Historical Society of Old Randolph Brundage House The parcel of property upon which the Brundage house sits today was part of a much larger tract purchased in the 1700 s by David Trowbridge, whose family originally emigrated from England and eventually settled in Morris County. The original property was extensive. Eventually, portions began to be sold off and the acreage upon which the farmhouse is located became a focal point for both the Trowbridges and the Brundages, who were subsequent owners. The home s existing farmhouse gable-front and wing is believed to have been constructed in the late 1860 s by D. A. Trowbridge (David Austin), a great-great grandson of the original property owner. The proliferation of railroads at that time allowed lumber to become readily available locally, and led to much change in construction techniques for folk dwellings. The abundance of timber also made it easier and less expensive to add on to existing structures. Several outbuildings as well as other houses existed on the property at various times. Many children were born in the house, and were often part of large families numbering as many as 14. It is believed that the house and property stayed within the extended Trowbridge family until the early 20th century, often having been sold back and forth to, or inherited by, in-laws, relatives and descendants. The property has a history of being farmed by many generations of Trowbridges; gardens, orchards and fields dotted the landscape up until 2000, when the property became a township recreational facility. The family for whom the house is now named bought the property in the early 1920 s. Charles Brundage, a Dartmouth College and Carnegie Institute graduate, was an investment banker with a sense of civic responsibility. In 1932, he founded the investment firm of Brundage, Story and Rose in New York. He served as a trustee on boards both locally and in New York, and initiated the first zoning regulations in Randolph during his tenure on the newly-formed planning board. His most notable contributions to his community came in the form of donations of land for use as parks James Andrews Park and Brundage Park and he was a trustee of the Charles E. and Edna T. Brundage Charitable Scientific and Wildlife Conservation Foundation. The last occupants of the house were William B. Cater, Jr., a grandson of Edna Brundage, and his wife Eileen. A white picket fence once surrounded the house, and the front entrance appears to be on the north side of the house, rather than on the street side. It is not known when the brick section of the house was built. The museum is open Sundays from 1:00 4:00 PM, April through November (except Mother s Day). Events in Old Randolph Your tour of the Brundage House features the following devoted to different eras and aspects of life in Old Randolph: Revolutionary War period costumes An exhibit depicting typical duties and tools of home and hearth Antique tools, equipment and collections, illustrating Randolph s industrial and agricultural phases from the 1700 s 1900 s; represented are former iron mines, farms, ice houses, forges and cooperages A period-costumed schoolmarm oversees a classroom exhibit featuring antique desks, old-time primers, slates, books and the essential woodstove The tour concludes with an exhibit of antiques, maps and ephemera of the Mt. 19 15 Ferromonte Historical Society of Mine Hill Bridget Smith House Constructed c by Irish miners named James and Thomas Maloney, the Bridget Smith House is a two-family iron miner s dwelling that was typical throughout the northern New Jersey Highlands during the iron boom of the 19th century. It is a four-bay, two-story, wood-frame house with a side-gable roof; a rear addition was built in the 1860 s. In 1879, the house was sold to a cousin of the Maloney brothers, Bridget Smith, a miner s widow, for whom the house is named. She resided in one side of the house and rented the other to another widow. Bridget s daughter and son-in-law renovated the house to be single-family in the late 19th century. In 1912 the family rented the house to Jesse and Ida McConnell. Ida lived there until she was 98 having resided in the house for 77 years. It is Ida s simple lifestyle that preserved the house in its unimproved state. Events in Mine Hill Artifacts from the various mines of the Township Exhibits include women s work tools of the mid-19th and early 20th centuries Artifacts from the onsite archaeological dig The descendants of Bridget Smith deeded the house to the Township of Mine Hill in 1993 for the purpose of interpreting the history of Mine Hill during the occupancy of Bridget Smith. The Bridget Smith House was individually listed on the State Register in 1997, the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and was recently included on the Women s Heritage Trail. The Ferromonte Historical Society of Mine Hill has been a faithful steward of the property on behalf of its owner, the Township of Mine Hill. In the last fifteen years, the Township and Historical Society undertook an exterior restoration and structural stabilization of the building with funding from the New Jersey Historic Trust Fund, Morris County and the Township. Little has been done to the interior of the building and it now needs certain cosmetic and structural repairs. The Township of Mine Hill and the Ferromonte Historical Society have currently applied to the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust for a grant to address the interior restoration of the historic home. Open the 1st and 2nd Saturdays of each month June through September from 1:00 4:00 PM and by appointment. 20 18 16 Historical Society of Rockaway Township Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House The Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House was built in 1772 by Col. Jacob Ford, Jr. prior to his construction of the Ford Mansion in Morristown, which served as Washington s Headquarters from December 1779 to June Both were in the Georgian style of architecture. Though both have striking similarities, the Ford- Faesch Manor House construction consisted of thick walls of native stone. The kitchen wing was built at the east end of the house and Faesch s counting room was located in the now missing west side of the house. Notable features include: original trompe l oeil paneling (c ) in the first floor hallway, original cabinetry in the second story bedrooms and a smoke house located in the attic. From , Ford leased the house and the adjoining property to John Jacob Faesch, a Swiss ironmaster who produced supplies and munitions for the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. So important were the Mount Hope Iron Works that Hessian prisoners captured at Trenton were released by General George Washington to work under Faesch. Faesch was recognized as a patriot who served as a civic leader, Common Pleas Judge and as a Morris County delegate to the New Jersey State Convention that ratified the United States Constitution. The efforts of the Historical Society of Rockaway Township (HSRT) resulted in the house being included on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1973 and 1974, respectively. In 1984, Rockaway Township purchased the Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House site and leased it to the HSRT, which has since assumed leadership for safeguarding the house and spearheading its restoration. The ongoing restoration has been made possible with funding from private donations, AT&T Matching Gifts, and grants from the F.M. Kirby Foundation, New Jersey Community Development Block Grant, New Jersey Historic Trust and Morris County Preservation Trust Fund. This support has financed significant exterior stabilization and restoration projects. Future goals include the reconstruction of the west wing to house ADA-compliant facilities and mechanical systems; and the reconstruction of the kitchen chimney for open hearth cooking demonstrations. Programs and tours of the Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House are offered several times a year. For an up-to-date schedule of additional HSRT and Ford-Faesch Ironmaster s House events, please consult the Rockaway Township website Community Calendar at For more information about HSRT, us at rockawayhistory@verizon.net. 21 17 Roxbury Historic Trust, Inc. e King Store and King House Museums at Drakesville Historic Park Crane and Woodruff opened the general store in 1827 to take advantage of the developing Morris Canal. It was after 1837 that the store started to prosper under the auspices of Theodore King's future father-in-law, Albert Riggs. Theodore married Emma Riggs and took over running the Store in 1873 and soon amassed enough fortune to build the family home on the parcel next door. The Kings took up residence in 1878 and E. Louise was born in At this point Theodore launched into a major renovation of the Store, "rejacketing" it in stucco to resemble ashlar, and installing a fine slate roof with acanthus leaf brackets to hold the eaves. After Theodore's death at their winter home in Florida in 1928, his daughter, Louise, closed the Store with its merchandise intact, a time capsule until after her death in Her cousin photographed the interior before the store was dismantled. Roxbury Township purchased the site in 1984 with Green Acres funding. Both buildings saw decline until 1989, when the Roxbury Rotary Club stepped in to rescue the Store. The buildings were listed on the State and National Registers in By 2000 the Rotary had set its sights on repairing the King House, and the Roxbury Historic Trust, Inc. was formed to develop the museums. The King Store is interpreted as a 1928 general store, post office and polling station. It has a collection of scales, a hand coffee grinder for all guests to try and items for sale. The House has three partially interpreted rooms including a 1936 mural by a British born artist, James Marland, and features changing exhibits. Rehabilitation continues with grant funding from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund, funds from Roxbury Township, and supporting plans funded by the Morris County Historical Commission, New Jersey Historic Trust, and the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State. On April 18, 2013 the Drakesville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 22 18 Roxbury Township Historical Society Silas Riggs Saltbox House In 1708, the Leni Lenape Indians deeded a tract of land to English entrepreneurs who had been mining and forging east of here along the Whippany River. Travelling west, they discovered massive outcroppings of iron ore called suckasin by the Indians. Establishment of the village of Succasunna followed, forming the nucleus of the Township of Roxbury, designated in 1740 as one of the four original townships of Morris County. Village development took place on an Indian trail in the plains surrounded by iron rich hills; called the Sussex Turnpike by the English, it linked Morristown with Newton. This became Succasunna s Main Street with Cornelius Slaight s Tavern, a pre-revolutionary stage coach stop, (now a residence, at the corner of Main and Hillside Avenue) and the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna founded in Just west of Slaight s Tavern and on the other side of Main Street, a simple cottage of pre- Revolutionary design and construction became home to Silas and Harriet (nee Rose) Riggs in the early 1800 s. Silas, from Mendham, operated a prosperous tannery here that produced leather pouches used to transport iron ore on horseback. He was instrumental in the development and operation of the Morris Canal. Threatened by demolition to make way for commercial development, the Riggs house was rescued in 1963 by the newly formed Roxbury Township Historical Society. The house was moved a half mile west to Main Street in the Ledgewood section of the Township to land donated by Silas and Harriet s great-granddaughter, Emma Louise King, daughter of Theodore King who operated the King Canal Store. Known locally as the Saltbox House because of the rear sloping addition giving it the architectural appearance of an old-fashioned salt container, the house was restored. It is proudly owned and maintained by the Historical Society, whose efforts resulted in its being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in This snug dwelling, with its wide board floors and post and beam construction held together with wooden pegs, is the site of Society meetings and special events, including A Saltbox Christmas, held each year on the 1st Friday in December. For this event, the house is decked out in simple greenery; hearth-baked cornbread and hearty soups are enjoyed by candle light. The event is complemented with the joint participation of the Roxbury Historic Trust, which also opens The King Store and King House Museums.
