3 SGA GeoTrail Rules All geocaches are officially registered with Participants will need to be registered on geocaching.com to retrieve the coordinates and other location information. Registration on geocaching.com is free. Before setting out to find the caches, you will need an official passport booklet. Passports are free and beginning August 27, 2012 can be obtained at the Borough of Spring Grove Municipal Office located at 1 Campus Avenue, Spring Grove, PA 17362, Monday thru Friday 8:00-4:30 or at the Glatfelter Memorial Library, 101 Glenview Road, Spring Grove, PA 17362, Monday 12:00 8:00, Tuesday and Wednesday 9:00 8:00, Thursday 12:00 8:00, Friday and Saturday 9:00 2:00. Each cache will contain a unique code, to be used in your passport as proof of finding the cache. Only one passport may be given per cacher. Once a cacher successfully finds eighteen caches they are eligible to receive their free geocoin. Presentation of the passport with a minimum of eighteen codes must be presented at the annual Septemberfest (September 22, 2012) where the geocoin will be awarded and the passport will be validated. Coins will be limited to the first 250 participants. Beginning September 24, any remaining coins will be available at the Borough of Spring Grove Municipal Office. Be sure to check the GeoTrail link on the Borough s website ( for updated coin availability. The passport will then be returned to the geocacher to retain as a keepsake. Only one coin will be given to each cacher. In addition, the first twenty five geocachers to pick up their coin at Septemberfest will receive a special geocaching gift. 2

4 Where can I find the caches? To find Spring Grove Area GeoTrail Caches: 1) Log onto geocaching.com (create a profile if needed). 2) Click on the "Play" drop down menu to locate the "Hide & Seek a Cache" link. 3) Under "Seek a Cache...", scroll down to "Other Search Options." 4) Under "Cache Name:", type "SGA -" (there must be a space between the A and the - ) or under "Hidden by Username:", type SGAGeoTrail. Disclaimer The nature of the sport of geocaching is such that trails, locations, and game pieces are often at the mercy of the elements and the non-geocaching public. All participants must understand that geocaching, as well as hiking, backpacking and other outdoor activities involve risk to both persons and property. There are many variables including, but not limited to, weather, fitness level, terrain features and outdoor experience, that must be considered prior to seeking a cache. Be prepared for your journey and be sure to check the current weather and conditions before heading outdoors. Always exercise common sense and caution. 6 Special Thanks to the Spring Grove Area Historical Preservation Society Project Sponsor The Spring Grove Area Historical Preservation Society was formed in March, The purpose of the Society is to provide historical legacy for this and future generations of the Spring Grove area residents. The objective is to promote historic preservation and appreciation of heritage, especially among young people. The Historical Society started with a museum in one room in the Spring Grove Area District Educational Service Center in 1997, they moved to its current location in the Spring Grove Area Community Center in April There are three artifact rooms comprised of approximately 3,000 square feet. All volunteers coordinate collection, storage and display and maintain inventory record of all artifacts. There is an exhibit of former one room country schools, antique classroom furniture, a library of old books and textbooks, school memorabilia and trophies, also photographs of school classes dating back to late 19th century. There is also a display of local organizations, business and churches within the Spring Grove area. The exhibit area features photographs, military uniforms and gear etc. to recognize local serve men and women beginning with World War I to present day. One room is dedicated to show furniture and life as it was in earlier years from old stoves, washing machine, rope beds etc. The Society identifies, documents, and provides historical markers for Historical Sites in the Spring Grove area. Bronze plaques inscribed with the Society logo, are placed on the designated buildings. The Society encourages, and arranges special tours of the museum for school groups, scouting groups etc. The Society always takes advantage of every opportunity to conduct an "open house" for the general public.
