2 From the Baron and Baroness Witam, Calafia! Baronial Progress April 6th: St. Artemas Anniversary 13th: Starkhafn Anniversary 20th: Dun Or Anniversary 27th: Summergate Anniversary (Above photo by Lord Levi ben Daniel) about the Cover The Baronial coronets on a Baronial throne. This month a Curia for the populace will be held to aid in determining who will be the next Baron and Baroness of Calafia. (Photo by Lord Ketill rauðskeggr. ) From the Seneschal Hail Calafia! The St. Jude Ransom Tourney has been moved to September 28th. Leif Erickson has been awarded to Lady Euginia in rauða and Lady Enedina. Winter Arts/Festival of the Rose has been awared to Baroness Eridana. At the time of publication, the specifics about the Curia had not yet been finalized. Once the date in April, time, and location are set it will be announced on the Calafia Yahoo! Group. All are encouraged to attend the Curia. You will have the opportunity to see the three couples and hear their answers to questions. The couple who will succeed Kate and Oliver will be invested at closing court at Potrero War. THL Reina MacCormick, Seneschal We wish we could have joined everyone at Estrella war, but it was not to be. The stories that were brought back only made us sadder that we missed the war. We had a great time with our Cousins at Friendship and helped by encouraging them with their desire to host an authentic Greco-Roman wrestling competition at Great Western War. The co-event of Pentathlon was an amazing display of the best of Caid. Practicum of the Sword, while less well attending than last year, had worthwhile & interesting classes in Armored, Rapier & Unarmored. And Collegium excelled as always. We are looking forward to April, and a full month of events. Starting with St. Artemas where I hope to finally bring the unruly & unjustified student unrest to satisfactory conclusion. Due in part to a mouthwatering recipe for bread pudding that includes raisins, chocolate coins, and the tears of students (for that slightly salty taste). When life gives you lemons, or an overabundance of bread, you learn to make the best of it as you look for the silver lining - which blends nicely with their Argent theme. We will be traveling back to Starkhafn and then up to Dun Or for their respective anniversaries. We are joyful that we will be able to visit our Cousins of Dun Or; as for the first time in a very long time, their anniversary does not coincide with a Calafian event. We will be ending the month with another local Calafian event, as we attend our northern canton of Summergate s anniversary, where we are looking forward to a magnificent display of fighting, food and friends, in a park with cool ocean breezes. We hope that you will be able to join us this coming month for what should be a splendid springtime smorgasbord of events. We are extremely fortunate and grateful that we had three couples submit Letters of Intent! In no particular order they are: Baron Al- Khariji abd al-khabir Yusuf ibn Khalid & Mistress Fia Naheed; Master Guy Rand Gallandon & Mistress Muirenn ingen Donndubáin; and Lord Tiberius Finn & Lady Sabyna of Aydon. We believe that all three couples are capable & qualified. Each couple brings a different flavor and potential. We invite you to come to the Curia to listen to them all and then send us your thoughts & insight to help guide us in making our decision. Your active participation is vital in this process, and you will help bear witness as our Barony progresses forward to the next cycle in our history. The Curia is tentatively set for the first Friday in April, the 5th. As this is being written, the details are being worked out & additional information will be announced within the ST as well as on the Yahoo Calafialist group. We hope that you will bear with us over the next several months, as we work through the process of selecting our replacements. Until we met again, we remain Yours in Service to the Dream. Don Oliver i Pani Kate Dogberry Baron & Baroness of Calafia 2

We had a busy month and it s just beginning! We attended Canton of Poll na Gainmhe and had a great time. The lunch was amazing and there were lots of yummies to enjoy. Then we attended College of St. Isidore. It was a revel with not a lot in attendance but we had a great time. Again with fabulous food we had a lot of fun. Then day after St. Isidore was 16

17 the Festival of the Rose where we presented Her Majesty with all sorts of roses, silk roses, real roses, chocolate rose, rose shrubs, roses with a cup. There were some fantastic arts displayed as well. Then it was off to Talon/Crescent festival. There was 2 days of good fighting and instruction. There were folks from the West teaching as well. The Artemisians were very friendly and helpful. A very nice event. This coming weekend is Crown Tournament, then Calafia/Gyldenholt Friendship Tourney in conjunction with Pentathlon. Then we have Practicum of the Sword and Collegium to end March. February 28 is the last day to submit letters of intent to be considered for the next Baron and Baroness. The first few weeks we will review the letters, then release the names and set a date for curia to talk to the candidates. Then we will collect input from the populace. The names of the couple selected for the next Baron and Baroness will be announced in May and we will have the investiture as Reeve and Reevess at May Potrero. Then in November they step up as the new Baron and Baroness. Commentary from the Seneschal: (THL Reina): Event Stewards for Calafian Anniversary has been awarded to Lady Magge Rose and Lady Gemma Rosalia. St. Jude s Ransom Tourney is moved to 28 September Announcements from Peers and Kingdom Officers: Mistress Muirrenn announced that Pentathlon is coming up. There were 39 people who entered 239 items. Arts and Sciences (Lady Eugenia): January was quiet for me. I did not attend anything as A&S Officer. In February, Poll na Gainmhe had their anniversary and I put together a demo area. We had 4 persons at the demo area and there were a few other demo persons around the event. On display at A&S, we showed examples of black work, chainmail, beaded and regular embroidery. We also had arrow fletching and spinning on display, along with the brick oven. (I did not organize the oven or the gentleman fletching arrows.) Scriptorium shared our demo space. We had a number of people coming by and we handed out business cards to interested people. I directed a few women to the Needle workers guild. Arianna and I have begun working on St. Artemas A&S. As the date gets closer, I will be doing more organizing of the competition that St. Artemas is holding. I have begun rounding up classes for Potrero. At the moment, I have approximately 6 classes on the books. I spoke with Giovanna and Ponc about the Newcomers/A&S area. We will begin working on having a presence at our local Baronial events. I am working on the Guild Directory, but I am missing a couple of Guilds, so I will be tracking everyone down within the month and getting all my info into the directory. I would like to have this all done and printed no later than May War. Chatelaine (Lady Giovanna): I attended Poll na Gainmhe Anniversary. We easily handed out over 30 business cards.. Thank you so much to everyone's help at Poll na Gainmhe! There were tons of people to talk to, more than me and Ponce could get to in a timely manner. The help from the populace to tell people about the SCA was lovely! Chirurgeon (Lord Constantine): CPR/First Aid Class to be held in March date/time TBD. Possibly at an event. Need Chirurgeon for War. Also looking for Deputy to take over by Calafia Anniversary. 17
