Bill and Linda Reichling New York Chapter K Chapter Directors Corner Halfway through September already! We had a great turnout for Wing Ding. Twelve of our members attended. Four of the 12 were first timer Newbies. What s so great about being a Newbie? Wearing a Newbie button and receiving countless handshakes and hugs from members from all over the country. Huntsville opened their arms and gave all of the almost 10,000 attendees a rousing welcome with a BBQ dinner under the Rocket in Rocket City. They fed us and we were able to tour all the sights of the museum. I see now why they call it the "Rocket City". Our adventure started Saturday August 30 th. Our trike was trailered from New Hampshire and arrived at our front door in the early morning just an hour before we were to leave. We were scheduled to meet the other 5 folks riding down with us at 8. Needless to say we didn t have a lot of time to go over the trike. We loaded her up and were on our way. We met Lois, Gary, Dianeth, Jairo and Dick and headed through the city then south to our final destination Huntsville. We took the scenic route traveling the entire length of Skyline drive. Then we detoured and rode route 16 ( thanks Edwin for the heads up about this awesome road) known as the back of the dragon in Virginia. We had a blast!! What a great road - challenging but scenic. We hit a detour that back tracked us a bit but we were all together and enjoyed the ride. That s when Linda and I experienced a little trouble. Heading to Nashville on I- 40 we experienced a total brake failure. Fortunately we were close to an exit and I was able to downshift and slow down enough to use the curb at a gas station to come to a final stop bouncing up the sidewalk but stopping before the big panes of glass. We called Road side plus for a flatbed. He came and loaded our trike up and we headed back 36 miles to Knoxville Honda. Total time lost was 5 or 6 hours. Linda and I both really appreciated the enire group staying with us through this whole ordeal. After the Honda shop did their inspection we found out both the front and rear brake cylinders were shot. I needed new brake pads and rotors front and rear. Sound like the recall issue? It was not an issue with the trike kit installation, It was the BRAKE RECALL. Mama Honda paid for the front and rear cylinders so far. We will be fighting for the full cost of repairs. Of course the trike was tied up days waiting for parts. So we rented a car to continued down to Nashville. Unfortunately we got there to late to attend the Grand Ole Oprey but we had a nice dinner in the hotel and enjoyed the evening walking around the Opreyland Hotel. What a place! If you haven t had the opportunity to stay here I highly recommend it. The next morning we left after a late breakfast and headed to Huntsville. Continued on the next page 4

Bill and Linda Reichling New York Chapter K Chapter Directors Corner We registered and immediately started to enjoy the festivities. Wing Ding expo put a big dent in everyone s wallet. Damn that aisle 700. Between the six of us that aisle alone cost us enough to be able to pay for a cruise. All of us were happy with our purchases. After spending so much money on Thursday we decided to ride on Friday. Linda and I in an air conditioned car, which made Linda very happy, and the rest of the group were on 2 wheels. We ended up in Lynchburg Tennesee at the Jack Daniels distillery. The tour was great the best part was when we were able to take a sniff of the brew while it was still waiting for its time to be good enough to be bottled. You could get a buzz on by just sniffing it. The aroma was great! Saturday we headed back to the expo spending more money on things we didn t already have. Had a good dinner there with fantastic entertainment. Ever see a speed painter doing his thing? He was amazing! Then outside to watch the light parade with 75 bikes and trikes lighting up the streets of Huntsville. Jamie participated in the light parade, although I missed him, it was fun to watch. Sunday was back to the expo again. We all knew there was something we forgot to buy. Then to the closing ceremonies. No we didn t win the new Honda Goldwing, the Bushtec trailer or any of the other door prizes or raffles. We all had a great time wishing and hoping anyway. Monday we escorted Lois to the airport, then our group rode to Nashville once again and walked around downtown visiting Printers Alley and the C&W Music Hall of Fame, lunch at Wild Horses then off to Knoxville to pick up the trike Tuesday morning. We took a pretty direct route home stopping at the Sands Casino and Resort in Bethlehem Pa for our last night on the road. A nice dinner at Emerill s Italian Table then we hit the gaming room, picking up a little of the Casino s cash. Thursday on the road again to our final destination - home. Got rained on a bit closer to home but didn t dampen our memories of a great vacation. The trike handled great with no additional problems. She was worth the long wait. Next year Wing Ding will be in Billings Montana. A long ride so start preparing now! Ride Safe and often Bill & Linda Reichling Chapter CD NY-K 5

Ann and Rich Bullis New York Chapter K Assistant Chapter Director Chapter K Webmaster District COY Coordinator A few topics that come to mind while we sit here pondering what to write about. And with the riding season nearing it's end for 2015, we want to highlight some of the great things that our chapter accomplished this past year, and then focus on our future. We kicked off the past year with our ugly sweater/ride party. This event was added by your officer's after a lot of thought and discussion about how to get the members more involved with ride planning. It was also done to try and get more participation on rides and events. The party allowed us to develop a ride schedule well in advance after collecting surveys that the members filled out and compiling all of the data on a spread sheet. The ride schedule was developed on a single sheet of paper so the entire riding season could be viewed easily. The members expressed how well they liked the new concept and that they were very excited about the ride schedule. We instituted the K-Bucks program after much brainstorming by the officers at their monthly meeting. Not only were our members excited about this but so were the other officers in our District as well as officers from many of the other states. This program was developed to bring more FUN into what we do and to get the competitive juices flowing in those members that want to be top dog! The chapter mileage program was introduces as well. We had a couple of goals in mind when this program was formulated. First we wanted to get more members on our chapter rides. Second we set a goal of 75,000 chapter miles. We first started with 100,000 miles but thought that we should make it a bit lower for the first year. Well, we past the 75,000 mark and we are now reaching for 6 digits. We figured that this program might also make people more competitive as well. After all, I thought that is why we have motorcycles. I also know that the biggest complaint that members have had in the past was that we do not have enough rides. We also wanted to finish first for Dash4Cash. But even more of an accomplishment was that we wanted to break 100 points. No other chapter has ever broken 100 points, and 50 points has only been reached 2 times. Once by Chapter N and now by us this year. At the present time we have 88 points. We are so close to our goal that it can be tasted. The taste of ice cream does not even come close to the taste of reaching 100 points. We still have a chance to break 100 points, but not if we do not get some support from the members of Chapter K during the next 4 weeks. All points must be earned before November 15th, so that does not give us much time. All we are asking the members to do is take a look at the SOS flyer and decide which ride or rides you will be taking. Remember that we need at least 5 chapter members for each one. I hope that the members are tasting it as much or more than I am. Continued on the next page Continued on the next page 6

Ann and Rich Bullis New York Chapter K Assistant Chapter Director Chapter K Webmaster District COY Coordinator One might ask, what else is there that we can get points for. Well, I have spent numerous hours searching for the answer to that question. There is 2 points for the Region B Campout that is coming up in October and it is very close by. There is also 2 points for the All Chapters East event that is in Carlisle, PA at the end of September. 3 Points for the Chapter X Anniversary BBQ on Sep. 26th. Wait there is more we could go to another Chapter X Gathering for 2 points, or even take a much longer ride to celebrate Halloween on Oct 31st with Chapter W. It is from 3-8 on Saturday the 31st and is located right by the Finger Lakes. It would require us to stay over on Saturday night., and is a 6 point event. The only thing that we need is 5 members to step up to see if they can withstand all of the FUN that is in store for them if they go to any of these events. Overnight Rides The Tunnel of Tree Ride is coming up real soon, Oct. 10, 11 and 12th. This will be a 2 night trip. Ann has a contract in hand and has been in touch with a group sales representative. We are all set to spend our first night at the Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh, NY. We will be spending the second night in White River Junction, Vermont. There are currently 16 members that will be going on this trip. We would be happy to add you to the list, but time is running out, and Hotel space is very difficult this time of the year so let me know ASAP if you would like to go. You know the saying, if you snooze you loose. We would like to attend NY-W Halloween get together on Oct 31 in Middlesex, NY. The event will take place from 3-8 so we will have plenty of time to tour the Finger Lake area before we go to their event. We will do some more touring on day 2 before we head home. This will be our last overnight ride of the season and we will get 6 points for this event if we have at least 5 members. These points should insure our quest for 100 points. Chapter Life As we sit and do the final touches on this newsletter we ask ourselves the same questions. What can we do to get more participation on rides? Why do members come to gatherings but do not join us on rides? Why do people join GWRRA? What is it that members want from Chapter K? Remember we will be starting our round robin discussion this month, and we want everyone to share the answer to 2 questions. 1. Why did you join GWRRA? 2. Why are you a participant of Chapter K? 7

Calling All Chapter K Members We are is desperate need of your help. We are so close to reaching our 100 point goal that it would be an outright sin to not reach 100 points. We can only do this if our members answer our SOS alarm. There are different gathering and events coming up that we can attend to get points. However, we must have 5 members for each event and they must happen before November 15th. I am sure that everyone knows the saying You Can Do It. Well we can do it, so lets get it done. We have 83 points + 5 for Ride-Out which will give us 88 just need 12 more I hope you can taste 100 points as much as I can! Please decide which events you can attend, because the chapter is depending on All of you to do your share. And remember that we need at least 5 members to get the points. Lets do this as a TEAM! 8

Rob Bellassai Rider Educator NY Chapter K As we are in the month of September, for some of us the riding season is coming to a close. So I thought you may want to know of some winter motorcycle tips, take a little time to check the following: Gas: Top off the tank and add the recommended amount of a fuel stabilizer such as Sta-Bil. This additive will keep your gas from breaking down and leaving a gunky brown varnish on your carb s parts or Fuel Injectors. Then start the engine and run it for several minutes to make sure you get the treated gas into the carbs or fuel injection system. Oil: Oil starts out golden and clean, and winds up black and dirty. The contaminants in the oil can be corrosive, and you don t want your engine parts sitting in a corrosive bath all winter. So do yourself a favor and change your oil just before the bike goes into storage. Coolant: Check the coolant for protection against winter freeze-up. Use one of those floatingball testers to make sure your coolant will resist freezing in the temperatures you experience. If you need to add any, make sure you use the type of coolant recommended by your manufacturer. Battery: Some motorcycles can put a slight drain on a battery to run electronics such as the digital clock, maintain radio presets or operate an alarm system. Make sure you have a charger system in place to keep your battery alive. Otherwise, at least make sure it starts the winter with a full charge, and give it a recharge every month or so. Other stuff: If possible, store your bike with the tires off the ground. If not, inflate both tires properly; put the bike on its centerstand, and every few weeks rotate the front tire to avoid flat spots. A good coat of wax will help preserve your paint and chrome, and a breathable cloth cover can keep off dirt, dust and other garage effluvia. 16

August ended with a real back of a surprise. We have been frequenting Oyster Bay for years with the hopes of meeting Billy Joel. Well it finally happened on August 29th during our North Shore Ride. Not only did we get to see him, but he spoke with us for 45 minutes and he took pictures and signed t-shirts for some of us. I bet some of you are wishing you would have participated in this ride now. Just in case you did not know, there was a special appearance made today by the man that you see in this picture. No I do not mean Aage, it is the man signing shirts. And yes, that would be the one and only Billy Joel. So you should think twice next time you are not sure about going on a ride because you never know what you will be missing until it is too late. Continued on the next page 18

20 Here you see Richie posing with Billy Joel, while holding one of the shirts that he bought. A short while Billy was getting ready to go on a ride when Richie asked him if he would sign the 2 shirts that he bought. And, sure enough he did. 20

This was at the last place that we stopped to pick up more bikes in the Bronx. There were many bikes of all types on the ride and I want to thank Edwin for making this ride possible. The members from our chapter that rode were Edwin, Rich, Alfredo, Mike Lauro and Mark. Those of you that could not make it missed an excellent ride. The weather, company roads and food were all fantastic. We had to stop for some fuel for our bikes and our bodies. Waiting on line for food. The line was long, but the wait was definitely worth the wait. Now this is a grill. And there was another one just like it. Check it out on the next page. Continued on the next page 21

This grill was very long. The first was for ribs and the second half was for slow cooking the chicken. Once the chicken was almost finished it was move to the second grill. That is the same grill that the pork chops were cooked on. Here is the other grill that was used to finish cooking the chicken and the pork chops. 22

I am sure that you have heard the saying "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" well this place should have one that says "I believe that you can't eat the whole thing". Just take a look at the pictures if you do not believe it and the pictures will make you a believer. I wish I would have had some room for dessert. But, you will see why there was no room for dessert after looking at the pictures on the next page. 23 Continued on the next page

That sandwich that is on the plate in front of me is what was left after I took meat off of it to make the sandwich that I ate. And that one was so big that I was just about able to finish it. There was a lot of good conversations going on until the food came out. And then, there was complete silence for quit a while. And I think that you do not need to call in Sherlock Holmes to figure out why. Continued on the next page 24

Now that is an ice cream. We all know how much ice cream I can eat and I certainly could not finish this one. These desserts could surely put a smile on your Getting ready for our departure to Harold's. Those of you that could not make this ride do not want to miss it when we go next year. And we will be going back there again. My leftovers that I brought home feed 6 more people and there was still more that went in the refrigerator for today. 25

Bill always has a smile on his face. However, his smile is much bigger here with the money that he won this month. Here is this months other lucky winner. Lois won the CD raffle this month. Here you see the members listening to Bill while he is explaining the Levels Program. 26

The 2015 Ride Out was well attended by Chapter K this year. We had 12 members participate at this wonderful event. A FUN time was had by everyone. Rides, food and company were all great. We even made a Martha's ice cream run, and boy was it worth it.
