3 Chairman s Chatter Hi All Greetings from Bonnie Scotland!!! Anne and I are at the Rootes Classic weekend in Moffat at the time of writing this. While NWCC are in Warrington soaking up the rain, sorry atmosphere, we are enjoying the sun here. We arrived on Friday after a wonderful drive from Manchester via M60-M66 - Accrington and across to Kirby Lonsdale. The views after Accrington were spectacular and the roads superb. In the main the road surfaces are far superior to those at home! First stop, The Sun Inn at Kirby Lonsdale, we ve stayed there a couple of times and the welcome is always warm and the food first class. After suitable refreshment we watched the bride and her proud dad approach the church next door for her wedding, pose for pictures, then go inside. We continued on our way up to Tebay, again a lovely drive along country roads. The rest of the run was on the M6 and A74(M) Arrival in Moffat was different than last time (any time) it wasn t raining!! Today (Saturday) the sun is out and the sky is blue. After the 'Full Scottish we made our way down to the Show field to book in for the run. NWCC members Bodgitt and Scarper were the Commer Campers Posse and John Gatley was out there somewhere as well. Anne and I meet up with friends, Steve and Debbie Beaumont and Chris and Elaine Andrews some of you might know and some other fellow classic car nuts. The assembly point is in the High Street for the official run up to St Marys' Loch and back. Its a fairly easy drive taking in views only a Scottish landscape can provide. The Loch appears after 15 miles and we all stop by the water for our picnic. With all of Scotland to park I still end up blocking the two Commers in! The return drive is by another, longer route but non the less spectacular. Some of us return to the show ground but the main event starts tomorrow. Sunday. We arrive at around 10am the field is already filling up, the weather is a little overcast but it s not going to rain and its quite warm! Originally I thought there were 500 cars but after a walk round maybe there are more. A good number of the exhibits are from the Rootes stable but I d say more then half are other marques. The auto jumble wasn t as good as previous years but it is still a good show. Monday was our going home day but not before sampling some more of the Borders. Travelling north we set off towards Galashieds on the A708 before turning south on the B709 through Eskdalemuir Forest - Langholm - Brampton - Penrith and back on the M6. Home again and I know you are dying to know how the Evans Waterless Coolant went. Well its doing well. The temperature is normal, it always stays the same and heater works fine. I ve fitted a high-level overflow bottle so the heads are never without coolant, other than the fact that its 140 to put in I can t complain. Cheers Nigel 3

Although the M6 Preston by-pass is acknowledged as as being the first motorway to be opened, it is worthy of note that work on the M63 Stretford - Eccles by-pass started before even the Preston Bypass. This took the form of advanced earthworks on the southern approach to the Barton High Level Bridge, utilising slag from a nearby steel works, which was provided free of charge. 4

6 Drinking and driving The following is supposedly true. The "Environmental Engineering News" published some rather sobering information about punishment for drunk driving convictions in other countries. In Australia, the names of drunk drivers are printed in newspapers under the caption, "He's drunk and in jail." In Malaysia the driver is jailed and, if married, the spouse is jailed. In the United Kingdom, Finland and Sweden there's an automatic jail term of one year. In Turkey, drunk drivers are driven twenty miles out of town and forced to walk back ten miles. In Bulgaria, a second drunk-driving conviction results in capital punishment. In El Salvador, your first offense is your last -- execution by firing squad. Dry weather and sunshine graced the first Tatton Park show of the year, but a smaller plot than was really required by us put a bit of a damper on it. Saturday wasn t too bad as this is, traditionally the quieter day. But, on Sunday, we were struggling for room. We were also stuck away on the far side of the trees instead of the more central position where we have become accustomed to. The good weather certainly brought out the crowds, both exhibitors and public on both days. Unfortunately, on Sunday, there was some controversy over plot sizes compared to turnout. Some club stands were larger than ours and yet there were only six to ten cars present. 6

7 I wonder if we, as a club, should look at getting in earlier with our applications, particularly to these larger shows, so that we get the central positions we deserve. Clearly, this has become a problem with the second show as we have failed to get in. The show is fully booked. Having said all that, I think everyone who attended enjoyed the weekend, especially Alan and Eileen who were awarded their second trophy of the year with the Marlin. Well done. 7
