We strive to improve our major roads and motorways - engineering the future to keep people moving today and moving better tomorrow. We want to make sure all our major roads are more reliable, durable and, most importantly, safe. As our region continues to see rapid growth, we are committed to ensuring our roads have the capacity to support it. These include junction 10-12, junction 6 to 8, junction 21a to 26 and junction 20 to 25, which you can find out more about in this brochure. We recognise this means there will be a significant amount of work taking place within a short space of time but delivering it now will allow us to improve journey times for all road users, reduce congestion and connect families, friends and businesses more quickly. We will be doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum during construction. That s why we re creating over 100 miles of extra lanes to tackle congestion and improve journey times in the North West. Now the Manchester smart motorway (0 junction 8 to junction 20) is fully operational and junction 16 to 19 in Cheshire is well underway, we are progressing with four new smart motorway schemes, which are worth around 500 million and start being built between summer 2018 and the end of

Our work to upgrade this section of the to become a smart motorway started in August 2018 and will continue until spring Our work, approximately 9 miles in length, will ensure that congestion between junctions 10 and 12 is better managed, particularly around peak traffic times. The scheme will include: converting the hard shoulder to create a permanent fourth lane new electronic information signs and CCTV cameras on gantries. 5 North West smart motorways 100 miles of extra lanes Bowdon Hale Barnes A538 A556 8 Warburton Green 6 7 Rostherne Mere Extent of the scheme Emergency area locations junction 6 to 8 (Manchester Airport to Bowdon) The between junctions 6 and 8 is a key strategic 4-mile route which carries more than 100,000 vehicles per day and links north-east Cheshire into Manchester Airport and Manchester city centre. Work will begin in spring 2019 to upgrade the route to a smart motorway and is expected to be complete by spring The existing hard shoulder will be converted to a permanent running lane to create four lanes ( all-lane running) together with the introduction of enhanced on-road technology. The design includes: converting the hard shoulder to create a new additional permanent traffic lane between junctions 6 to 8, increasing capacity to reduce congestion new electronic information signs and CCTV cameras on overhead gantries. These will show variable mandatory speed limits and manage traffic flow and incidents installing remotely-operated temporary traffic management signs along the entire route during construction, a key safety feature of the work 4 new emergency areas to provide an area of safety following a breakdown new emergency roadside telephones in each emergency area. 6 North West smart motorways 100 miles of extra lanes junction 21a to 26 (Croft to Orrell) 5 Up Holland M58 Orrell 26 A577 Wigan Extent of the scheme Emergency area locations A577 The between junctions 21a and 26 is a key strategic route carrying around 120,000 vehicles daily between Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Work will begin in spring 2019 to turn this section of motorway into a smart motorway and is expected to be complete by winter This 10-mile stretch of road, from the north-facing slip roads at junction 21a to the south-facing slip roads at junction 26, will see its hard shoulder converted to a permanent lane (known as all-lane running). Extra road capacity will be created and congestion reduced as a result of the additional lane together with the introduction of enhanced on-road technology. Work will begin in autumn 2019 to upgrade this route into a smart motorway with completion expected by winter All-lane running (where the hard shoulder is converted to a permanent running lane) will be implemented across the majority of the scheme, running from the east-facing slip roads at junction 20 to the west-facing slip roads at junction 25. A controlled motorway (where variable speed limits are used along with a hard shoulder) will be introduced in areas that already have 4 lanes and a hard shoulder. The scheme will increase capacity and reduce congestion.
