Artwork: HE Therese d Ivoire nto the Noble Barony Bordermarch, UHE Santiago & HE Elisabeth, do send these warm greetings... ejoice! For the BAM nigh upon us! R Lord Phocas is extremely busy spitting out custom made BAM site tokens with the help of a new press that he cobbled together. He only has a few thousand more to make, but they re going to look fantastic! Lord Biau has gathered all the known scribes on this side of the Eastex Freeway and he has them helping him knock out the scrolls needed for the upcoming event, as well as all the scrolls for our future events for years to come. Lady Pandora is busy gathering info for the BAM gate booklet, and continues to transform all the info. we send her into one fine newsletter. Lady Padraigin is still fussing with her hair. Although we re still in need of a few coordinators for BAM, we do have most of them already on board. Lord Rudy has graciously stepped up to take on the Gate Coordinator s position this year. He will need all the help he can get and then some. We will push to get the Gate Sign-up Sheet filled in as much as possible, it s never too late to volunteer to sit a Gate shift. Lord Zane has been drawing up plans for the new Bordermarch Armada and hopefully we ll begin construction soon. We had some recent fire threats near the Border Keep Castle, but Lord Armand was on hand with a wet towel and a lemonade spritzer bottle in case the fires came too close; they did not, the castle is safe. We do have several pre-event work days planned at site to take care of pre-event needs. The dates will be announced pretty soon. Our good neighbors, Barony Stargate, will once again be taking on the position of Ansteorra s Auxiliary Army. They will be setting up a hospitality tent at field-side filled with food and drink for the fighters. A Royal procession on horseback into Saturday s morning court with all of Ansteorra s army in tow will most certainly take place. We will be having another great Saturday evening Hafla. Youth combat will take place under the tutelage of Lord Germanicus, and this year there will be more youths ready to do battle. Youth and Adult Archery Champions, Youth and Adult Bardic Champions, and our newest Equestrian Champion shall be chosen at BAM this year. Let us not forget our friends in Kingdom Gleann Abhann, they still want our castle and have had an entire year to fine tune their plans to take it. They will be joining us at BAM this year with a massive army and a very determined Crown! More classes, more taverns, more music and dancing than you can shake a wicky stick at, and more fighting! Is there anything else we ve forgotten? In Service We Remain, Santiago et Elisabeth Baron and Baroness of Barony Bordermarch Page 4

Teachers, Classes Needed; BAM Prep Contributed by Lord Biau-douz de la Mare, Scribe and Knight Marshall of Bordermarch reetings unto the GPopulace of the finest Kingdom in the Knowne World, I, Ld Biau-douz de la Mere from Barony Bordermarch, wish to remind everyone and anyone that teachers and classes are welcomed and needed for BAM As this years class coordinator, I wish to extend an invitation to those interested in teaching at this most glorious event to either drop an to beaudumesnil@ hotmail.com or call me at (cell) anytime to discuss class teaching opportunities. So far we have in store another wonderful HAFLA. Lady Angelica de Granada, Bordermarch s very own hospitaler, is deputized to coordinate the HAFLA events. I will be pleased to field requests for these type of activities, but will turn them over to Lady Angel. I hope to have Chivalric, Rapier, and mixed weapon type authorizations in place to get everyone interested in these authorized in time for Gulf Wars. I feel, as the Baronial Knight Marshal, that it is my duty and responsibility to try and get qualified as many people in as many different martial practices as feasible. This is a big undertaking as I have to coordinate with our Champions, who double as our scenario coordinators, time allotments for these type of authorizing activities. I likewise need qualified authorizing Marshals of the different disciplines (i.e., Siege, Combat Archery, Thrown Weapons, Cut & Thrust, etc., etc.,) to make these dreams a reality. Any and all advice and assistance with this task would be greatly appreciated. I m begging, Please! Our new Star Pricipal Herald has also expressed interest in creating a class tier for the Heraldic Arts. Looking for any interested parties for this track. I would also love to host Scribal Art classes, as the Barony has new writing tables for Scribal Point. We would be tickled pink for anyone to share their artistic abilities and crafts in these mediums. Pottery Demonstrations involving period and mundane techniques and materials would be very welcome as well. Lord Goldweard please contact me Re: Puppet Theater or, if someone can please relay to him Puppet Theater and my info., thanks. Blacksmithing, Armor making, Vintning, Brewing, Fiber Arts, etc., whatever your specialty, please come to our wonderful event and share your talents. SCA and Make A Wish Team Up for Fundraiser Contributed by Lord Atli Karlsson Minister of Arts & Sciences As posted on Armour Archive forums There is a little boy, in Florien, LA, named Dawson Lowe, that is 10-years-old and has less than two months left to live for he is dying of cancer. His one true love is the middle ages, and several local SCA gentles are working with the Make a Wish Foundation to bring a day of medieval games to him. I am asking all available ladies and lords to join us on October 8th and bring this wonderful dream you share and play to a little boy for one day. The township of Fisher, LA (a few miles from Florien, LA) has offered their site, where they host the annual Sawmill Days Festival. There will be melees and a donation list to where all proceeds will go to him. For more information contact Gordon Parler, SCA THL Thorgard, at The tournament will be a Last Man standing list, it s like a standard double elimination list with a twist. All participants will need to pay an entry fee into the list. Once eliminated, participants can buy their way back into the list. All proceeds will go directly to the family, who is in more need than ever. Dawson s mom, Anette, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. If anyone would like to make a donation but can t make it to the event there is an address for donations to be sent directly to the family. Page 6

Autumn Melees Pot Luck Friday Contributed by Lady Jillian Saint Andre, OSTB Herald of Bordermarch t s here, it s here! The meal Iyou ve waited for all year long! That s right folks, it s time to start thinking and planning for the Bordermarch Pot Luck on Friday night of Melees! This is a newer tradition we ve had going for the last couple of years. It s a family affair, for Bordermarch really IS one great big family, with crazy uncles, wise old grandparents, and loud, rambunctious kids galore! So come camp near us or just come to visit, share our circle and our FOOD! A few things have changed from last year s Community Campsite & Meal Plan: 1.) There will be a large pavilion central to the camp where food can be prepared and hopefully some community storage will available for those who need it. Tables should also be set up there for camp use. Cook to your heart s content, but clean up your station before you leave! 2.) We re only planning one, maybe two if we get enough offered, group meals for the event. Anyone can and is welcome to offer to share their own meals. It s encouraged in fact! We had a terrific time seeing everyone throughout various points of the day and it was comforting to know that someone/something was at home waiting for you! But we won t be organizing official meals for the entire event as we did last time. 3.) Friday night will be Bordermarch Chili Night! Some ideas of things to bring are: Several types of chili: make sure you note ingredients if you put anything particularly spicy or offbeat in yours, for allergy sufferers (for instance our future King is allergic to onions!). Cornbread Corn Rice Hot Dogs & fixings Macaroni & cheese Chips Salsa Salad(s) Various green vegetables Sweets! What else do you like to have with chili? This dish can be so very personal, everyone has their own best way of filling it out; I d love to share all the ways our Barony can bring this meal together! So step up and let me know what you can bring to share for our family meal. If anyone would like to get together for a cooking day or needs equipment/storage before or during the event, let me know so we can arrange that as well. If you have storage or equipment you can loan out or plan to bring and make available, please mention that also; all are welcome! Page 7

from Mistress Tessa s Garden & Hearth... From Plant to Pesto Contributed by Countess Mistress Tessa of the Gardens, MP Founding Baroness Bordermarch 2010 Blackfox Award: Best Article - A.S. 43 everal sweet basil plants in my garden Shave grown over three feet tall as shown by the propped measuring stick. I use fresh basil leaves in meal preparations almost every day. These plants go into the garden in Spring and will not survive the Winter outdoors in the ground; however, potted basil can survive the winter in the greenhouse, and basil stems will root in water in the kitchen window. Brown, dried seeds from growing season can be harvested and kept dry through the winter for planting the following Spring. During Spring, Summer, and Autumn, I like to clip several branches to keep in a vase or pitcher of water inside the kitchen; the little stems will grow roots in water within a couple of days, therefore a handy arrangement will stand for several weeks. After frost and freeze take the yard basil down, there can still be fresh basil growing on the kitchen counter. Further, the modern cook will appreciate the fact that basil, as pesto, freezes well for use out of growing season. Pesto lasts well in the freezer Photos by: HE Countess Mistress Tessa of the Gardens. Page 8 for about half a year. If refrigerated, fresh pesto lasts well about one week. Pesto means pounded. Medieval and Renaissance cooks would have pounded and ground their fresh herbs, mortar/pestle style, hence the word pesto. A modern convenient chopper/ blender does the work much faster than mortar and pestle. Processed pesto can be stored in a jar with a drizzle of olive oil added over the surface before the lid is tightened. To keep in the freezer (omit the cheese), I use disposable teaspoons to scoop up units of pesto and arrange the spoons - without touching each other - on a flat surface to go in the freezer for individual teaspoon amounts measured. After the teaspoon servings of pesto are frozen, they are placed together into a freezer bag for use at any time, to season chicken, fish, soups, stews, or sauces. Other people suggest freezing similarly in ice cube trays. Pesto can be made in many varieties for bread spreads or seasonings to add over pasta, as desired. Plant to Pesto continued on next page...

Plant to Pesto continued... Ingredients to produce approximately 1 cup of green pesto: ~ fresh basil leaves, washed then patted -not squeezed- dry, about 2 cups ~ garlic, 3 cloves, or 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic ~ pine nuts, 1/4 cup [Note: substitute walnuts if pinenuts are not available] ~ extra virgin olive oil, 1/4 cup... added into blender slowly after the basil, nuts, and garlic are ground ~ lemon juice, 2 teaspoons or more, to taste ~ optional: salt, pepper to taste ~ grated Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup [Note: if intended to freeze, do not add cheese prior to freezing; after the pesto is thawed, stir in grated cheese. Otherwise place grated cheese into the blender in the first processing with leaves, nuts, and garlic.] Happy Kitchening from the Garden! L k What s on the Web nyone can click this Ansteorran Kingdom Order of Precedence A(OP) link to show a long list of names/awards known thus far for EVERYONE who has filled in Bordermarch as their Group at this OP web site. It might be a good idea for each person to look up his/her own name to see: (1) if you are listed correctly, and (2) if you are listed as Group Bordermarch. If your data is not correct, you can send in your own correct data on line. If all the populace of Bordermarch are indicated in the Bordermarch Group, an entire isolated Bordermarch OP can then easily be extracted from Kingdom s OP. Page 9

For All the Saints Saint Barbara Contributed by Lady Ellen the Quiet of Bordermarch uring the time that Maximian was DEmperor of Rome, there lived a man named Dioscorus. Dioscorus was a rich man who loved and worshipped idols. He also had a young daughter named Barbara. Barbara was so lovely that Dioscorus decided to build a tower in which to keep her. The tower was high and strong so that no man could see her beauty. In her seclusion, Barbara gave herself to prayer and study; and behind her father s back, she found a Christian priest who gave her further instruction in the ways of the Lord. Then there came many princes who asked Dioscorus for the hand of his daughter. Instead of accepting the most promising lad, Dioscorus approached Barbara and suggested it was time to marry. Barbara became angry with her father and told him that she did not want to marry and begged him not to force her. Put off by this encounter, Dioscorus decided to take a very long trip. Before leaving town, he contracted with some workmen to build his daughter a private bath-house close to her dwelling. After Dioscorus had been gone for some time, Barbara left her tower to inspect the work on the cistern and found that there were only two windows, one facing south and the other north. Barbara Artwork and illumination By Lady Ellen and Lord Phocas. Page 10 ordered the workmen to install a third window. The workmen then explained to Barbara that they were afraid of her father. Since Dioscorus had only ordered two windows, two windows was all that they planned to build. Barbara was going to have her way and told the workmen, Do and make that I command you, and I shall content my father, and shall excuse you against him. The third window was installed facing east. When the work was finished, Barbara entered the cistern; and with her thumb made the sign of the cross in the marble which is there to this day. Barbara was baptized in the blessed water of her cistern. She also lived there for some time surviving on honeysuckle and locusts. Barbara s cistern is said to be similar to the fountain of Siloe at the foot of the walls of Jerusalem and is also like the fountain of Robatyoa. These are all fountains of living water that never run dry, and of which the sick of heart and ill of body can be cured. In time, Barbara returned to the tower and found a mission. Upon seeing the many idols her father worshipped, Barbara was filled with the Holy Spirit and destroyed the idols. Shortly afterwards, Dioscorus returned from his voyage. The first thing he saw was the cistern with three windows instead of two. Dioscorus asked the workmen, Wherefore have ye made three windows? The workmen replied, All Saints More Symposium continued on next page...

All Saints continued... Your daughter hath commanded so. Dioscorus summoned his daughter for an explanation to which Barbara answered, I have done them to be made because three windows lighten all the world and all creatures, but two make darkness. Dioscorus then wanted to know how three windows give more light then two. Barbara replied, These three fenestres or windows betoken clearly the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, which be three persons and one true God, on whom we ought to believe and worship. The cat was now out of the bag, and Dioscorus realized Barbara was a Christian. In fury, Dioscorus drew his sword to cut down his own daughter. Barbara made a prayer. The tower walls opened, and she was miraculously transported to a mountain ravine and found herself in the company of two shepherds who were tending their sheep. Dioscorus was fast on her trail and soon found the shepherds. The first shepherd protected Barbara, but the second one betrayed her. The second shepherd s loyalty to Dioscorus did him no good as he was turned to stone and his flock became locusts. Dioscorus dragged Barbara off the mountain by her hair then threw her in prison where she waited to be judged. It was Dioscorus s hope that Barbara would not be spared horrific torture and took her with the point of his sword to her judge. The judge had been informed of Barbara s Christianity and had decided she would be shown no mercy. But, upon seeing her beauty, the judge encouraged Barbara to renounce Jesus Christ and return to the worship of idols. It was that or suffer the cruelest of torments that he could devise. Barbara declined and replied, I offer myself to my God, Jesus Christ, which hath created heaven and earth and all other things. Fie on your devils which have mouths but cannot speak, have eyes but cannot see, have ears but cannot hear, have feet but cannot go. With that, Barbara was stripped and beaten with sinews of bull; and her torn flesh was rubbed with salt. She was then sent back to prison so that the judge could think of other torments. While in her cell, the Lord appeared to Barbara and told her to not be afraid. He would take care of her, and Barbara was made whole. When she next appeared before the judge, he noticed that she was as beautiful as ever and was enraged. The judge subjected Barbara to more torture to awful to mention, and she survived them all. Finally, it was decided that Barbara should lose her head. Dioscorus took Barbara back to the mountain. After her final prayer, her father beheaded her. While coming down from the mountain, a fire from heaven descended on Dioscorus; and he was reduced to ashes. St. Barbara is remembered on December 4 th and has a very long list of patronages. She is the patron saint against impenitence, explosions, fire and storms; and the patron saint of architects, armourers, masons and fireworks. St. Barbara is represented by a woman holding a feather, a woman holding a tower, or a princess in a tower holding either the palm of martyrdom or chalice of happy death. St. Barbara is also one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Page 11
