1 Vol. XXI Issue 4 Happy Wanderings The Official Newsletter of the Happy (OK) Wanderers An Affiliated Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association May 2012 Let s Head down south more information This is really a big newsletter (for me) because it covers two rallies, the Wichita Falls Rally and the Claremore Rally. Additionally, there are Minutes from the Business Meeting that was held in Claremore along with the registration for the next rally that will be held in Durant. As a result, not as many pictures just too many words! Keep in mind that the Happy (OK) Wanderers have agreed to work the South Central Area Rally that will be in Shawnee this September. Kent and Linda VanFossen and Sonny and Gail Rose are serving as Co-chars of the Volunteers and they are hoping to sign up additional members to help. If you would like to help call either Kent at or Sonny at and volunteer your services! Steve Bivin is missing a Coleman camp chair. Please check your storage bays to see if you have it! SRA The Durant/Choctaw Casino KOA is "Big-Rig" friendly, with 80' long pullthrough, 50-amp service, full hook-up sites available. The check-in building features a meeting room for 100-plus people, arcade, laundry, custom-designed pool, and large covered patio. They provide shuttle bus service hourly to the casino and provide peace of mind with hourly security patrols. Choctaw RV Park, in Durant Oklahoma, is close to the action! Enjoy your visit relaxing by the pool within our park, playing games or sitting by one of our fireplaces in the registration facility. You can also take a complimentary shuttle to our Casino Resort to try your hand with slots or table games. They have a variety of food venues and free entertainment. Choctaw Event Center hosts your favorite entertainers, auto shows and other special events, such as the Annual POW WOW. You will also have access to our Wellness Center which offers free weights, equipment, basketball courts, sauna and Jacuzzi. We ll visit the Three Valley Museum in Durant featuring SE Oklahoma history including a small town exhibit depecting 20+ businesses and scenes from early 1900 s, transportation exhibits and a Native American Gallery. 3 May Page 3 Howling Good Times at Coyote Ranch The Texas-style rally room at Coyote Ranch in Wichita Falls, TX was a welcome treat as travelers arrived after the severe weather swept through the area. Tin roof ceilings, cedar bar stools, beautiful picture windows and a wonderful patio-- along with the coyote howls -- set the stage for a fun first rally in March. Arrival packets were distributed to the 27 coaches that made the trek and our welcome banner was proudly displayed on the patio. A delicious Pot Luck Dinner on Thursday evening brought everyone together to visit and to hear reports from our own Rod Sartwell, FMCA South Central Area Vice President, who reviewed FMCA financials and reported locations for the 2013 FMCA Reunion Rally in Gillette, Wyoming and 2014 in Perry, Georgia. South Central Area rallies for 2013 will be held in Springfield, Missouri and 2014 in Beaumont, Texas. Group games of Finding Your Match Bingo and info on CB Handles and Interesting Accomplishments were the order for the evening and were followed by individual games and fellowship. A beautiful addition to the rally was the glorious display of stained glass art by Paul Hlavaty and Rita Team and the custom made wooden grandchild rocker built by Tommy Team. Each had spent the time well in Arizona over the winter. Paul said his time at Grandpa Camp monitoring the stained glass classes and work time afforded him the opportunity to fuse glass and to make the stained glass windows, bowls and weather vanes. Rita shared beautiful sun catchers and containers. It was a special treat to enjoy the talents of all three. Lots of oohs and aahs also in praise of LaVonda Waldron s beautiful beaded pin bracelets. She made earrings to match and the woven jewelry box that held her jewelry. Lots of wonderful creativity and talent in our chapter and a privilege to see the results. Friday s Honoring of Dr. Seuss birth month was instigated by Chuck Myers and the hosts who served up a breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham with toast and juice. Quite a treat! RV Mobile Lube began servicing coaches and several future rally hosts met in groups planning their rallies. The Quilt Service Project filled the afternoon for the ladies and then Dinner was served. The scrumptious Apple Salad, Ham and Beans, and Cornbread were following by a colorful variety of cakes. Great fun for the evening was the LRC (Left, Right, Center) Game directed by Chris Curtis. Gold $1 coins and Kisses were given to each player. After some pretty furious movements of the holdings, it seemed that Kent Van Fossen, Julie Bivin and Paul Hlavaty were a few of the golden winners. But there were smiles all around whether you had gold $1 coins or just chocolate kisses. Earl reported on the welfare of some of our members and former members and welcomed our newest members: Patrick and Janet Wright of Norman. Kent Van Fossen gave a report on the Volunteer status for the Six State Rally in Shawnee in September. Our chapter will furnish 16 volunteer coaches. Frank Taber reported that 31 coaches support the 2012 rally requirements for hosting, but only 3 coaches have signed up to host at Oklahoma City. Please contact Frank at if you can host at Twin Fountains on August A choice of Sausage Gravy and Biscuits or Cheerios with Milk and Fruit was available for Saturday Breakfast. Many explored Wichita Falls and the historical home areas. Marvin Curtis manned the grill for burgers on Saturday evening and was joined by Jim Guess grilling at his coach and Paul Hlavaty grilling alongside Marvin on the patio to finish the grilling. Everything worked out fine, and everyone enjoyed the burgers and fixings, baked beans, cole slaw and ice cream sundaes. Our March birthday girls were given greetings in birthday cards and with pieces of cake with a candle. Ron Wadley led the singing of Happy Birthday. Sandy Sturdivant, Janie Ruttman, Alice Wood and June Guess enjoyed March birthdays. Earl Powell volunteered the team members for the evenings Know Your National Parks game: Sandy Taber, Beth Plant and LaVonda Waldron vs. Dave Ruttman, Dick Sturdivant and Ben Sasser. Although not planned as a stump the team or the audience, the men finally earned more points (and $1 gold coins) than the women thanks to the bonus questions! A lot of information was shared, a lot of National Parks to be seen ----and Earl is now planning trips (not really) to encourage members to enjoy their national parks!! Sunday morning Breakfast brought a choice of breakfast treats and juice and the thoughtful devotional offered by Dave Ruttman on Virtues: Truth Matters. Ron Wadley led the group in Story Continues on Page 4

Lyda and Jim Walker came to visit on Saturday. Hosts were June and Jim Guess, Chris and Marvin Curtis, Anne and Chuck Myers, Mary and Earl Powell, Alice and Mickey Wood and Carl Threlkeld. I VE DONE SOMETHING YOU HAVEN T DONE. In an effort to learn more about our members, several interesting facts were shared. Other interesting tidbits of information were discovered during the FIND YOUR MATCH GAME. Many are musicians and artists. A majority are former business owners. Several have moved more than 10 times and several have worked outside the U.S. A few have 12 or more grandchildren and 4 or more children. A few have worked in only 1 state. Several have been RVing for more than 25 years and several have owned more than 3 coaches. Dave Demuth has visited all 50 states and several have been in 48 states. CB HANDLES also revealed a few insights into careers (and personalities?) Also thanks for all the cutting boards and cutting time shared. 28 fleece quilts were completed Friday afternoon. Another 5 are still in progress. 22 ladies worked and visited Friday afternoon. Several cute scarves were also prepared. The quilts are a glorious variety of fabrics and colors and will be well loved by all recipients. Charlene Sasser and Ann Myers work on their quilts at the rally.

5 May Page 5 Will Rogers and Much More... So live that you won t be ashamed to sell the family parrot to the town gossip Will Rogers The Will Rogers Memorial Museum tour was a real treat with the introduction by Will, himself. But that was just one of the interesting parts of the April Rally in Claremore. Viewing horses being exercised and raced so near to your coach was great and lucrative for some. 36 coaches attending and visits from current and past members who drove in along with family members of members who visited, and a new member increased our numbers to and it was a great time visiting with everyone. Eight April birthdays were celebrated and a Business Meeting was also part of the event. Food was plentiful and delicious and the hosts appreciated Cora Lee, the KOA Manager, who prepared the meats for the meals on her mobile grill. Several even took in the local Friday night Sprint Car Races featuring Ron and Betty Wadley s grandson, Shane, who was racing. Coaches began rolling in on Wednesday and a large group converged on the Hammett House in downtown Claremore for dinner and/or pie. (Coconut cream or apple or lemon pecan in huge servings were the choices for our group.) KOA Welcome bags filled with treasures from the campground and other locations were distributed and the rally was ready to begin. $1 hot dogs for Seniors on Wednesday were very popular. But they couldn t top the Chicago, New York and Claremore Hot Dogs with nachos served by the male hosts on Thursday. Strawberry shortcake was the finishing touch. Judy Janicke displayed Happy (OK) Wanderers clothing that can be purchased. She also stated that members may purchase their own Oxford, polo or T-shirts and she can have the chapter name embroidered on the items. Guests included Jerry and Irene Slutz s granddaughter, Madison, who the prior month had played in a National Home School Basketball Tournament, which earned 5 th place in the US. Celeste and David Rodden enjoyed their daughter, Jennifer and granddaughter, Tiffany that night and John and the two grandsons on Saturday night. Jim and Lyda Walker welcomed their son, Jerry, who works in Pryor during the week and returns home to Edmond on the weekends. Marjorie and Errol Marshall, friends of the Plants and Stagner s, were guests and our now our newest members. Welcome! Friday s busy day began with biscuits and gravy, sausage and fruit for breakfast and was followed by Choir Practice. The Will Rogers Museum tour was a great way to fill the afternoon. Spaghetti with meatballs, salad, French Bread and Cookies decorated with fruit made the Friday Dinner extra special. Sprint Car Racing or visiting were the order of the evening. It was a treat to see former member Margaret Goatcher, who stayed for dinner with Gary and Dorothy Van Fossen. Jerry Slutz reviewed some of the details of the Durant Rally in May and Ron Wadley reviewed the June rally in Grove. So mark your calendars for both. A full Breakfast on Saturday was not beyond the reach of the hosts who had only a refrigerator as their kitchen facilities. Scrambled eggs with ham, hash browns, sausage, oatmeal, Cheerios, fruit, biscuits and juice made quite a delicious spread. Breakfast was followed by our Happy (OK) Wanderers Business Meeting facilitated by President Ron Wadley. Following that was a Meeting for those volunteering during the Six State Rally in September in Shawnee. Kent and Lynda Van Fossen and Sonny and Gail Rose were our representatives to the Planning Meeting and filled us in on the duties and jobs selected. Former members, Dwayne and Dee Davis, current members, Susan Countryman, and Chaz Allen and Sandy Johnson spent part of the day with us. Several went to the Grandstands to view the Horse Racing and others sat outside the coaches and visited. April birthdays were celebrated during the Saturday Dinner. Rod Sartwell, Frank Taber, Lynda Van Fossen, Jim Guess, Paul Crites, Judy Janicke, Lois Stagner, and Gilbert Stagner were our honorees. They along with the rest enjoyed the wonderful pulled pork, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and sherbet for dinner. Celeste Rodden challenged us on a Happy (OK) Wanderers Membership Word Find game. Great time and great fun. The hosts finally breathed easier with a simpler breakfast of sweet rolls, Story Continues on Page 6

6 May Story Continues from Page 5 fruit and Cheerios on Sunday morning. Dorothy Van Fossen led the choir in Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and To God Be the Glory. A large group of choir members made for glorious music to enjoy. Dave Ruttman, our Chaplain, who offered all the blessings for our meals and rally, shared his encouraging message on the second Virtue: Hope, rooted in God. Following the Devotional Time, Dave Demuth auctioned off the remaining food items. Hosts for the rally were Dave and Darlene Demuth, our master of ceremonies, Steve and Julie Bivin, Don and Lavonna Kinnamon, Randy and Beth Plant, Dave and Celeste Rodden and Carl Threlkeld. APRIL RALLY PARTICIPANTS Dan and Liana Bohnsack, Claude and Marie Childers, Rod and Ginger Cleavelin, Paul and Anna Crites, Marvin and Chris Curtis, Jim and June Guess, Leroy and Lois Hinderliter, Paul and Barbara Isenberg, Judy Janicke, Errol and Marjorie Marshall, Tom Murdoch, Chuck and Ann Myers, Earl and Mary Powell, Sonny and Gail Rose, Dave and Janie Ruttman, Rod and Ethel Sartwell, Faye Shelton, Jerry and Irene Slutz, Gilbert and Lois Stagner, Roy and Cindy Standridge, Frank and Sandy Taber, Tommy and Rita Team, Carl Threlkeld, John and Danet Trivette, Gary and Dorothy Van Fossen, Kent and Lynda Van Fossen, Ron and Betty Wadley, Gary and Lavonda Waldron, Jim and Lyda Walker, Bob and Donna Waller and Mickey and Alice Wood. THE DA AWARD next recipient and had a few suggestions. Gary Waldron, the previous recipient, had flooded his coach; Frank Taber created the Claremore Old Faithful Geyser, and then unplugged his electricity, and the female hosts nominated Don Kinnamon and Dave Demuth for their trip to the store to purchase 3 items none of which was toilet paper. Will Rogers would have said, We are all here for a spell. Get all the good laughs you can. Perhaps you know of other possible recipients. If so, tell Jim Walker and Earl Powell which nominee should be the next one to proudly display the DA Award in their coach.
