RED RIVER ROVERS October 2018 SEPTEMBER RALLY REPORT Welcome to Citizen Pottawatomi Nation in Shawnee, Oklahoma! We arrived ready to have a good time with great friends.

The Red River Rovers have got that covered; the sounds of laughter can be heard in the club room and outside by the parked coaches.

Scarecrow and pumpkin centerpieces were on each table. After the 26 coaches were parked, we gathered for the Meet and Greet before the potluck dinner.

On Friday after a breakfast on your own, we met in the parking lot to car pool to the Citizen Pottawatomi Nation Eagle Aviary for a tour.

1 RED RIVER ROVERS October 2018 SEPTEMBER RALLY REPORT Welcome to Citizen Pottawatomi Nation in Shawnee, Oklahoma! We arrived ready to have a good time with great friends. One of the things that is wrong in the world today is the absence of laughter. The Red River Rovers have got that covered; the sounds of laughter can be heard in the club room and outside by the parked coaches. Our Hosts were ready for us to appear; the Host team consisted of Bill and Hilda McGuire, Cynthia and Mike Moore, Steve and Melody Beall, Ken and Joyce Daugherty. Scarecrow and pumpkin centerpieces were on each table. After the 26 coaches were parked, we gathered for the Meet and Greet before the potluck dinner. The cooks in our chapter always come up with yummy items; which make you want to try a bite of each one. The strange thing that happened was nobody brought a dessert; some people were seen wandering around looking for a bite of something sweet to eat. On Friday after a breakfast on your own, we met in the parking lot to car pool to the Citizen Pottawatomi Nation Eagle Aviary for a tour. This was one of the most informative and interesting tours that we have been on ever. The two women told us about the Aviary; it houses eagles rescued from the wild that are injured and rehabilitates them. If they can t be returned to the wild then they stay at the aviary. Eagles mate for life and can build nests up to eight feet across. They had quite a few Bald Eagles in a natural looking enclosure; they are a solid color until they are about 6 years old, then the feathers turn white on their heads. At 5 p.m.

The ladies were leaving soon to go to Yellowstone National Park to pick up a sick Eagle that the park rangers had found. The aviary has one Golden Eagle and they brought it out for us to see and have picture time. The first tail feathers have a white stripe on the edges, they are very special and are used for ceremonies; when new feathers replace them they are brown. They had quite a few Bald Eagles in a natural looking enclosure; they are a solid color until they are about 6 years old, then the feathers turn white on their heads. At 5 p.m. we had our social hour, then at 6 p.m., a delicious dinner of Chicken Tenders, mashed potatoes, green beans/bacon, peppered gravy, salad, and cookies. It is wonderful to see so many stay after dinner to play cards and poker. We had two tables of poker and of Skipbo. Early breakfast at 8:0 a.m. on Saturday morning consisted of scrambled eggs, sausage patties, gravy, biscuits, juice and coffee, with the business meeting following. The election was held for 2019 officers; they will be installed later in the year. The afternoon was free to explore Shawnee, the Old Santa Fe RR Station/ Potawatomi County Museum houses a piece of early Oklahoma history. There is a 1965 Huey Helicopter on display at the Shawnee Veterans Memorial. The large Flea Market had many items for sale or you could visit the Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center. The men s tech session at 1:00 p.m., was on, Motorhome Air Systems. The ladies craft session at 2:00 p.m. was on building a snowman out of a man s white sock. We enjoyed visiting during the social hour before dinner. The Hosts out did themselves by serving Brisket/BBQ sauce, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw and Apple pie ala mode with vanilla ice cream. The casino called out to some after dinner; others played cards or just visited. Sunday morning dawned and breakfast was served at 8:0 a.m. We had a continental breakfast of sweet rolls, juice, and coffee. Wendell gave the devotional on the Good Samaritan; he encouraged us too always be friendly, helpful and too be good neighbors. Soon coaches were unhooked, some were on their way home while others were going to the Six State Rally at the Shawnee Expo Center. CRAFTS - CONNIE Snoopy CAMPBELL T L (Snoopy) and Susan became members of the Red River Rovers in March of 200. They have always been very active members...if snoopy wasn t warming up our new members with his magic tricks he was leading the morning devotional on Sundays. He will be greatly missed at our rally s but not in our memories. Born Dec. 26, Died Aug. 12, 2018 We will be making two folded paper greeting cards (1 large, 1 small). You will have six designs to choose from. The cost will be $.00 for the two cards.

Our recipient thanks him, then a little while later turns around and asks him what day is it? Duh!! Later, our birthday boy is over at the casino and not doing as well as he would like. The Grasso s are nearby and happen to see a woman with some casino security people approach our recipient from behind and when she put a hand on his shoulder he jumped as it startled him. The Grasso s are wondering what in the heck is going on. Could he be in trouble? Is he trying to manipulate the slots, or trying to use counterfeit money? Moving closer to hear what is going on they hear the woman say to our recipient, we checked our security tapes and it shows you dropped this $ bill. Norma was the passenger in the car and of course she and Marion were having an intense conversation. Further up the road, having a lull in the conversation they noticed they weren't following Carlton anymore. They could tell because they were not seeing any bicycles on the back of a motor home ahead. Thinking maybe she had slowed up some which would allow Carlton to get ahead and out of sight of them, she calls Carlton to see where he is. Where in hell are you she asked? His response, I'm trying to catch you. you passed me 20 minutes ago in that construction zone while you were yakking with Norma. Lonnie is a member of the Potawatomi Nation and was very instrumental in our being allowed to use the tribal campground. Doris and Lonnie now live in Shawnee.

5 Page 5 RALLY PHOTOGRAPHS FALL IN TUSCANY Be sure to join us at the October Rally in Bullard, Texas! Bushman s RV Park is a beautiful, new site for The Red River Rovers. For those who enjoy fishing, there is a stocked catch and release pond on the grounds. Friday evening, you will be treated to a Tuscan Spaghetti dinner followed by a complimentary Wine Tasting courtesy of Kiepersol Estate Vineyard. Saturday evening, dinner will be followed by Card Bingo. Bring your dollars! Two outstanding museums are located in the area: The American Freedom Museum, 1051 N. Houston Street, Bullard, Texas. The museum highlights American military heritage with artifacts and equipment from the 1700s to the present. It is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10- and admission is free. The Tyler Rose Museum, 420 Rose Park Drive, Tyler, Texas. Since 19, the museum has preserved the Texas Rose Festival history featuring fabulous costumes and memorabilia. It is open from 10-4:0 Monday-Saturday and admission is $.50. There are many other East Texas activities to enjoy or come and simply enjoy Bushman s!
