ATVAM News - July 30, 2018 Newsletter of the ATV Association of Minnesota (Est. 1983) In Memory of Len Hardy,
From Mike Devine: "Len was a GREAT man and will be missed by many. He was a key person in many of the ATV trails that all of us ride today. If you ATV in Minnesota, you have probably ridden on a trail he helped build or maintain." From Perry May: "If you ever met Len, he never had a clean vest on, maybe only when new. I always looked at Len, and some of the other 80+ year old active people we have in ATVAM, and always admire the trail pioneering they did to bring us where we are at today." Len Hardy was one of Minnesota's greatest advocates of safe and responsible motorized recreation. And one of the most successful, because of his positive, can-do nature. Whether he was meeting you for the first time or the hundredth, whether he was agreeing with you or arguing a position against you, it was always with goodwill and a smile. Len helped get many of Minnesota's ATV trails started, planned, designed and approved. He helped build and maintain them. He started many ATV clubs and helped many other people get them started. He held leadership roles with ATVAM, the Itasca County ATV Alliance and other ATV-related organizations. He was a dedicated DNR Trail Ambassador. He was named DNR Volunteer ATV Safety Training Instructor of the Year. And much much more.
From Len's obituary: Leonard Charles Hardy (Uncle Lenny) died on July 17, 2018 while working with his machine (Mustang). He loved to work in the dirt. He literally left this world doing what he loved and "With His Boots On"! Thanks to everyone who submitted photos and remembrances to the ATVAM newsletter, magazine and Facebook page. And thank you Len, for your positive attitude, energetic trailbuilding spirit, and your friendship. We miss you and will do our best to carry on your work. To learn more about this great man, and his dedication to family, friends and his community, please read the rest of Len's obituary, at this link: 8c57-11e8-bd fb7e6292.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source= &utm_campaign=usershare ATVAM NEWS: JULY 30, Send us your comments, club news, photos and article ideas. them to: -Forward this to club partners and business sponsors if they aren't ATVAM members already. -ATVAM members should be receiving this newsletter and MN OffRoad magazine. To ATV Clubs, Their Leaders & Members For Hard Work & Fast Repairs To Serious Trail Washouts
Two weeks ago, many ATV trails in central Minnesota were closed due to severe washouts caused by heavy rains. Today, the DNR ATV Trail Closure List marks all but one open! Thanks to all the ATV clubs and their dedicated leaders and members for getting out there so very quickly, and working hard to do major repairs and get the trails reopened for the riding public. You are the 1 percent of ATV owners doing the work for the other 99. Thanks also to the Minnesota DNR for doing the same on the trails they manage. And thanks to those riders who, after seeing the devastation all that rain did to our trails, joined their local ATV club and ATVAM, in order to support their efforts. Continue to check the DNR ATV Closure list at: 27 New Food Items At The Fair! And Free Tickets From The DNR! Photos from the top down: Nordic Waffles. Slider Flights. and Blueberry Rhubarb Cobbler. What could be better than taste-testing two dozen new items at the Minnesota State Fair? How about free tickets for up to 6 people in your ATV club! Sign up your club to take a day volunteering at the ATV Display in the DNR Building. Get six people, split up into 3 groups of 2, working the booth for a few hours, visiting with fair goers, and answering their questions about ATV trails, clubs, regulations and safety gear. Then spend the rest of the day at the fair! Here's a message from Mary Straka with the DNR, with the dates still open. She works hard for all our clubs...let's help her fill out the fair schedule. From Mary Straka:
Volunteer Opportunity at ATV Display What: Take a day and reach out to State Fair visitors about ATV riding in a safe manner on fun trails, answer questions and visit with State Fair attendees. 6 Tired of watching the men have all the fun loading trailers and winching ATVs? The Woodtick Wheelers would like to invite everyone, men and women, to a fun and informative day on Saturday, August 11, in conjunction with the Remer Harvest Festival. Bring your wheelers to ride in the parade (staging in the school parking lot at 11 am), grab lunch at one of the many vendors in town, visit the Woodtick Wheelers Club Trailer, and watch "how to" demonstrations. After the demos, the women will take a short (and easy) ride on local trails, while the men attend the Garage Days Swap Meet at the Remer Motel, AND prepare dinner for the women! We will meet afterwards for a potluck dinner and fellowship. Bring lawn chairs, your own drinks, and a dish to share. Parking, demonstrations, and dinner will be located at 6638 County 4 NE, Remer (turn at the Depot and go 1 mile). Contact Theresa Meyers for more information, at And More Fun Community Events...

From the Remer Motel: "ATV, UTV, Boats, Bikes, Sleds, Cars, Swap meet. Bring your Rides! Tons of trails to ride, fireworks and plenty of other activities throughout the day and night! Event takes place at Remer Motel and Campground on 3rd St. during Harvest fest! Call for details. If it's collecting dust and has to go, bring it! $25 entry for vendors. Food trucks, including Gess What's Cooking -- voted the best in the State -- will be there. Gonna be a good time!"

And A Ride To Honor Heroes:
Senator Klobuchar Pushing For Greater RTP Funding
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D- MN) is a champion of the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) -- a major source of trail funding in Minnesota. She has filed an amendment to a spending package that would allow the RTP, as well as all Transportation Alternatives programs, to be eligible for additional funding. The fourbill spending package (H.R. 6147), under consideration by the Senate combines four appropriations bills for federal programs in fiscal 2019: Agriculture, Transportation and Urban Development, Financial Services, and Interior-Environment. RTP projects, which have always been eligible for use of other state surface transportation funds, are specifically denied eligibility for funds added under the 2018 appropriations omnibus signed into law in March, This amendment is designed to remove that unfair restriction. ARRA (Americans For Responsible Recreational Access) sent out a nationwide encouraging everyone to contact their Senators prior to this week's vote to support H.R We'll update you on the outcome of that vote. In the meantime, you can get more details at the Facebook page of ARRA, or its website at How Many ATVs Are Registered In Your Club's County? Knowing the number of ATVs registered in your county, and the actual number being used, may help you in your advocacy work with local governments to create new trails. Thanks to Bruce Lawrence with DNR Enforcement for providing this information. Send us an if you found it helpful, and how you used it.

Fun ATVAM & ATVAM Club Events Coming Up
Photo from the Cuyuna Iron Range Riders: Our club hosted an ATV charity ride for juvenile diabetes today (July 28) for Because of Brandon. There were 37 machines and 61 people that came out to support this. Brandon, the son of commissioner Doug Houge, lost his life three years ago. We rode from Crosby out to the Miller Black Bear trails. and road the trail area. The group road 40 miles. We raised $ dollars. All the money raised will go towards supporting scholarships for kids to attend Needlepoint Camp on the St. Croix River in Wisconsin. It was a great day.
