1 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT a p r i l After the club meeting on Sunday, a nice older gentleman came up and held my arm. He wanted to know what I d be doing in ten years. Come to find out, he meant with the club. Anyways I ve heard this same question many times in the past few months and I d often thought about it over the past few years myself. Part of our clubs mission is to teach present and future generations about the history of agriculture. I was very pleased when our club donated $ to the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom program. I often find myself daydreaming of the Maine Antique Tractor Club joining up with this program and having school children come to our land to see how equipment was used years ago. We have a lot of work to do on the land before this could happen but it can t hurt to start thinking about it now. In order for our club to continue into the future, we need to find ways to entice younger generations to get in on the fun. The generation coming up now are those who grew up when the farms were going under. Most have no firsthand experience or knowledge of what farming is all about. There has to be a way for our club to get more involved by combining the agricultural ways of years ago to the ways of now a days. I truly believe there are no obstacles we can t overcome, from insurance issues to rainy weather and everything in between, arm in arm, we can carry out our mission and have fun along the way. Pam April Meeting Highlights The meeting was held at Bill & Harriet Clark s garage in Skowhegan with 56 members present. It was voted to donate $100 to Maine Agriculture in the Classroom. The antique tractor pulling committee is working on their schedule for this year. It was suggested some rodeo type games be added. The drivers will be asked to fill out information sheets to help the announcer. The land & building committee met March 23. Plans to expand the clubhouse are coming along. Members are anxious for the snow to melt so they can get onto the land. The festival committee met March 26. Many ideas were discussed. It was voted to give the committee a $5.000 budget to work with. This will be our 20 th festival and the first on our own land. Let s work together to make this a great time for all. Joe Landry donated the money to buy tracks and letters for two reader board marquee signs. It was voted to have the raffle tractor be a John Deere A. The donor stipulated the money go into the land & building fund. The afghan raffle netted $115. Thanks Leon, for donating the 2 afghans and Eunice, for selling the tickets. One of the festival ideas was to have a box social one night. How many remember box socials? Pam made up a nice box to show us. It was auctioned off and made the club another $26. HAPPY SPRING! Respectfully Submitted, Harriet Spencer, Secy. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Del & Jackie Carney from China recently celebrated their 75 th wedding anniversary. Congratulations! Chuckie Dews from Cumberland had a heart valve replacement on March 27 at Brigham & Women s Hospital in Boston. He is doing well and will be there for a while. Barry Cooley from York had one hand operated on and will have his other hand done soon to help with carpel tunnel. Raymond Bailey from Cambridge passed away on March 27 from an accidental death. He had the nice antique chainsaw display in the Starbird Building at the festival. NEXT MEETING: May 3, 2015 Sandy Salsbury s garage 54 Knox Rd. LAND & BUILDING REPORT The Land and Building Committee met at the Albert S. Hall School in Waterville on March 23 rd with 10 members present. Wes Jordan from the Sheriden Corporation joined us. Wes has been with this company for 8 years and is experienced in many aspects of building projects from safety to project manager. He has so generously offered his services to our club free of charge. Wes had received the drawing of our club house expansion and felt it met the specs for a public facility with the addition of one more exit door. Wes will get the permits needed to start construction from the Town of Norridgewock and the Fire Marshals office. He will give an estimate of the total cost of the expansion project to the committee as soon as the next meeting. The committee will be ready when the time comes to start the expansion project as far as having permits in place. The Committee discussed the lay out of the land in respect to the Festival. It was felt a better assessment could be made if we were actually on the land. Barricades will be needed for safety along the pulling area. Primitive camping will be available. No parking along the road way. A work day is planned for May 23rd along with a yard sale.
