PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello all, We had a wonderful general meeting with lots of great food and we have such talented chefs. Thank you all for bringing friends and potential new members. It is fun to chat with so many new people during our social hour. Pat McAndrews has been busy making improvements to the hall. New ventilation fans were installed in the restrooms, thanks to James Tucker and his brother. Karen Tarasco and Shalla Villett helped the Juniors with their tack cleaning event last weekend while Paul and Mike barbecued. Many thanks to Butch Kittle for continuing to prepare the arena for this year's horse events. And congratulations Sandie and hope your birthday celebration was fun, wishing you many more! If anyone is interested in donating drought resistant trees to be planted at the Horsemen s to provide more shade at events, please let us know. New flyers are being generated to promote hall rentals so if you know of a business or persons interested in renting the hall please contact Sandie. We look forward to seeing all of you at the next general meeting, and we re having corned beef and cabbage, yum! If you have any announcements or information you would like to be included in the monthly newsletter please contact Linda Carcione. 4 CORRAL CHATTER PAGE 4 Here s Your Chance to Volunteer! The following are some selected Santa Clara County Park volunteering opportunities, local or high horse use locations. If hours are logged to SCCHA it can help count towards the cost of SCCHA using SCCP facilities for events. Sat March 7 Grant Ranch Trail Work Day 9am-1pm Sat March 28 Calero Park Beautification Day (working on removing fencing posts and wire) 9am- 1pm Sat April 4 Case Grande Beautification Day (gardening type work planting and trimming 9am to 1pm To sign up contact SCCP (408) or Volunteer@prk.sccgov.org or through (and there you can see the full list of volunteer opportunities as well). Quicksilver Park at Woods Road Water Trough update. Building of the water trough was temporarily delayed when a $9000 bid came in to do the project. However, a lower bid had been procured that is still slightly higher than the money gifted. A $2500 grant has been obtained from the Bay Area Barns due largely to work submitted by Janice Frazier. The county has finally given its formal approval to the project so that work can now begin. SCCHA Volunteers Make it Happen On Saturday, January 10th, three Santa Clara County Horsemen came to the rescue for our parks and helped staff restore water to the Calero Rest Stop. Hours worked accrue toward paying for our fees to stay overnight at Calero for a ride and campout. Lunch was graciously provided by Mary Anderson as the perfect reward for hard work in cold weather. Such projects really help build healthy working relationships with park personnel. Special thanks to Paul Tarasco for his strong back, good attitude, and special shovel! NEWS FROM GROUNDS This month was a productive one for our grounds. Butch has worked the arena yet another time, and it promises to be ready for our first show. Storage areas are being cleaned out and preparations for a permit to serve food to the general public are well under way. James Tucker and his brother James graciously put in the ceiling fans for the first step in the process. After we add a sink and an extra faucet, we are good to go. I love it when our plans come together! Pat McAndrews

6 CORRAL CHATTER PAGE 6 Georgina Wallbridge Memorial This club ride will be staging at our own SCCHA Clubhouse, and we will ride out through the adjacent private pasture to reach Santa Teresa Park. More information in our April newsletter! SCCHA Saves the Day! It all started with a bang on the door in the middle of the night and the loud shout of "Sherriff". I quickly wake from a deep sleep and gather on my robe while thoughts run in my head as to why I was possibly being arrested. After reminding myself that I live a lawabiding life, I answer the door and find two large cops announcing that four horses where running down McKean Road and were they mine? I dash outside and find to my relief that there are four large and unknown animals fighting with my ex-stallion. I quickly grab a halter and try to catch one, only to find that I could not hold the one as the other three took off in a frenzy back down the road. To my terror, one of the four proceeded to get tangled up in some barbed wire from an old neighbor's fence and lay struggling on the road wrapped in wire. After freeing himself finally, he took off to join his compadres. Sometime later all of us managed to contain the wild beasts and get them safely out of the road. Dawn came and the process of trying to find their owners began. I knew they were not abandoned horses as they appeared well cared for. The Almaden area was quickly divided up by members, Kitty Monahan, Janice Frazier, Sandie Quinones, and Jodie Holloway. Niki Lamb put the word out on the Internet, while Janice contacted all the stables. The horses were placed at our facility for safekeeping until the owners were located and could arrange for transportation home. It was so wonderful to have a facility where we could accommodate horses in trouble and keep them safe until they were returned home. Thank you again to all who dropped all they were doing, which includes sleeping, and hurried to the rescue!

ANNOUNCEMENTS Butch Kittle explained the Williamson Act and how it relates to our SCCHA property taxes. Some wanted to know how much our taxes will be going up once we have phased out of the WA by Yvonne said only a little increase. Mary and the board have addressed the property tax requirements. 8 CORRAL CHATTER PAGE 8 As a horseback rider, you spend hours in the saddle; either training for events or out on the trail. The wear on your body can begin to show with lower back, hip and knee pain as well as shoulder and arm tension. Anyone who spends time on a horse is bound to suffer some type of injury requiring weeks, months or even years to recover. Acupuncture helps shorten recovery time by decreasing pain, swelling, inflammation, and helping the body jump start its own healing process. Acupuncture can improve flexibility, circulation, and help riders get back into balance after a fall--imbalances in your body can affect your horse s gait and temperament. Acupuncture can also increase body awareness and posture, so that you can move easily with your horse and enjoy the ride. As a California licensed Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine I specialize in Integrated Sports Medicine. As an owner of two horses, I understand the need to be at our best physically in order to help our equine partners stay balanced and happy. Horseback riding carries a higher injury rate than both motorcycle riding and automobile racing. By taking care of yourself, you will be taking care of your horse. Dr. Irene Kane DAOM, L.Ac.
