1 The EVENTER January 2017 San Martin Horsemen s Association Serving Our Community & Promoting Horses & Horsemanship President s Message 1 Club News 2 Membership Form 3-4 Holiday Party 5 Water Trough/ Classifieds 6 Things of Interest/Support 6 Chitty Blog 7 Well, Published by: San Martin s Horsemen s Association 2017 President s Message I d like to start by wishing everyone a Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday and got a lot of riding in too! I d like to thank you all for having the confidence in me to once again represent SMHA as your club President. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would like to say that my goals this year are to: 1) increase the size of our membership. We all know that the way to do this is for each of us to bring in just one new member this coming year. I know you can do it!! 2) I would like to find a way to spark more interest in events and getting new members more involved in the planning and execution of those events. 3) The club needs to keep our finger on the pulse of what s happening in our area to be able to keep existing trails open and do what we can to help promote new areas to ride. We need to keep our horse community horse friendly for years to come. Last but not least, we all need to have fun! Get out there and ride more!! As you know, there is no January general meeting but we will meet on February 10th for our first meeting of I think we will try to have our annual soup/chili contest so get your favorite recipes ready. Watch the February Eventer for more details. I would love to see everyone at our meeting and better yet, bring a friend! See you all next month. I will leave you with this thought: ** Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does. ** - William James Bev November San Martin Horseman s Association P.O. Box 275 San Martin, CA Page 1

7 COE PARK Work Days: If you are so inclined, come out and help on the trails. There are a number of times during the year when help from the public is solicited, and all help is greatly Join us for a fun hike along the Timm Trail, Spike Jones Trail and possibly other trails in the area in search of Coe Park fungi. The hike will last approximately 4 hours or more. Join our expert, Chris MacIntosh, who will identify CHITTY BLOG appreciated. For starters, save the following dates: Jan. 21. Feb. 18, and March 25. Watch the Eventer for more details.call Chere or Kitty to sign up for the Jan. 21 date COE PARK Fungus Fun Hike: the many mushrooms and fungi along the trail. With all the rain this year we hope to have a great hike. You MUST make reservations for this hike as space is limited. Call Chere or Kitty to sign up. COE PARK and RAIN: This is not aimed at SMHA members in particular, but intended to pass the word along, especially to new riders and others who may need to be educated. During the rainy season the county parks are often closed so many people head to Coe Park. PLEASE do not ride on the single track trails for 48 hours after it has rained ½ or more in 24 hours. Bikes and horses really tear up the trails when they are wet. 99 % of the trail maintenance as well as putting in new trails is done by volunteers. There is no way that all trails can be continually fixed and new trails built, especially when people do not use common sense and don t seem to care how much damage they do. Also, stay off trails that are marked closed. There is a good reason they are closed. New trails need to settle in before use to ensure the trail tread is sufficiently packed to withstand use. Other trails may have maintenance issues that need to be addressed before they are safe. There are plenty of dirt roads you can ride on in wet weather, so take advantage of them and show some respect for the trails in Coe Park and the volunteers who work so hard to ensure that we, the public, continue to have several hundred miles of trails to ride on in this fantastic park. Contact Chere or Kitty for more information or check the Henry Coe State Park website. Please note: the above events are NOT SMHA sponsored events. SCCPARKS MLK TRAIL DAY in Santa Teresa County Park:: For SCC Parks Trail Work Pre-registration is required. contact the Volunteer Program at volunteer@prk.sccgov.org or call (408) for more information. Save the date for summer. Jack Brook Horse Camp 2017 August 7 th -14th January San Martin Horseman s Association P.O. Box 275 San Martin, CA Page 7
