It s too bad you don t get a choice at which way you end up in life! What would you rather have, Parkinson s or Alzheimer s? His buddy quickly replies, Parkinson s definitely, yep, Parkinson s. 11 Sunday Round-up - photos by Bundi 7th October Day Ride to Normanville Around 25 of us gathered at Top of Taps including a couple of new Kiwis, headed off towards Clarendon before turning off to Cherry Gardens and then on to Ironbank. From here we went towards Stirling, back to Longwood and then to Mylor. Passed through Echunga on our way to Macclesfield, we then went along Greenhills Road and into Meadows for morning tea. We then trundled along Bull Creek Road through Ashbourne to the Goolwa Rod and through Currency Creek, and along Airport Road to Middleton. We headed to the Victor Ring Road and Range Road which we followed through Parawa and to Delamere. We then followed the main road back to Normanville for lunch at the Bakery, where it was said there must have been a wounded bull inside, cause they were charging like one. It was a fantastic day out riding in coolish conditions, and the sun came to join us as we ate lunch. 14th October The day the Ride Captain chucked a sickie Andrew must have been crook, as he has not, to my knowledge, ever not made a ride. We headed off up Norton Summit Road, and my last minute decision to take the New Road Vs the Old Road had Ray testing out his manoeuvring skills on his new bike, as he took up my first designated Corner Marshall post - sterling job, Ray. I think the rest went a lot better, although, for some reason, I never got to be Corner Marshall even once! I believe we had about 25 bikes go up New Norton Summit Road, on to Woods Hill Road, Tregarthen Road to Sommertown, down on to Piccadilly Road, Spring Gully Road, Old Carey Gully Road, then on to Old Mount Barker Road and Mount Barker Road, down to the roundabout at Hahndorf; left onto Ambelside, Heysen Road, right along the Onkaparinga Valley Road, left onto Spoehr Road and then Woodcock. Here, I messed up and turned right back into Balhannah, so moved on to Woodside where we went left up Tiers Road to Kummnick Hill Road Lenswood, then back down to Loby. From Lobethal, it was across to Quarry Road, Ridge Road, out onto the Woodside to Nairne Road near the Woodside Barracks - we then went left onto Military Road to Brukunga, left again at Dawsley onto the Old Princess Highway through Kanmantoo, Callington, Monarto and into the Bridge for a some-what later than usual smoko. Ray took the time at the Bridge to avail himself of some free air (apparently it costs where he comes from), and with his newly found sense of stability, we set off for Angaston on the most direct route through Palmer, Tunkillo and Mount Pleasant with only a slight deviation at Eden Valley through Keyneton. - Bernie 21st October Day Ride to Goolwa I M BACK :-) There were around 20 or so of us at Top of Taps in fine and cool conditions; we headed to Education Road to Clarendon, then down Bakers Gully Road and around to Kangarilla, where we turned and went towards Meadows. We then went along Brookman Road before turnindg down Peters Creek Road, towards McLaren Flat, Whickam Hill, and at the Range, we turned left and went back to Brookman Road and towards Willunga Hill. We went along the Range Road, turned left and down the hill to McLaren Flat and on to McLaren Vale for morning tea. After obtaining sustenance, we went to Willunga, up the hill and onto the main road to Mt Compass, where we turned, went through Nangkita and to Ashbourne where we turned at the Greenman and made our way to Strath. Next, on to Milang where we followed the lake around to Clayton, on through the fords through Currency Creek, and to Goolwa for lunch. There was a great group out on the ride with much socializing and problem solving of the world s problems going on, and we all got home in time to watch Moto GP. 28th October day Ride to Milang Well, a smallish group of around 15 including 3 newbies, given the forecast for a pearler of a day, were at Civic Park to set off through Chain of Ponds and then along the Mad Mile, through Cuddlee Creek and on to Gumeracha. We turned here and made our way to Lobethal and watched the mummy Koala with baby on board hold up the traffic while it crossed the road. We then went around the back of Woodside, through Inverbrackie and on to Nairne, along Bald Hills Road to Wistow and down the hill to Strath for morning tea. We then headed to Ashbourne and along the boring Bull Creek Road to Meadows, along Greenhils Road to Macclesfield, Stamps Road and, eventually, Echunga, where we turned and made our way to a very busy Hahndorf en route to Mt Barker. From there we went through Wistow (again) to Woodchester where we turned to Langehorne Creek, and made our way to Milang for lunch. The weather was perfect all day and combined with the scenery and mighty fine company a good time was had by all. 10

12 Sunday Round-up - photos by Bundi 4th November Day Ride to Mannum Well, around 30 of us, including The President of the Sunshine Coast Branch and his lovely wife, assembled at Top of Taps. We set off up Ackland Hill Road, through Longwood and along Sturt Valley Road, made our way to Stock Road and past Warrawong to Mylor. Next, we went along River Road and Ambleside Road to Balhannah, Hahndorf and Echunga. We then went through Flaxley and along Whites Road to Meadows for morning tea. We then set off and went to Macclesfield, Mt Barker, through Mt Barker Springs to Nairne and along the Old Princess Hwy to Dawsley, where we turned and went through Brakunga and on to Inverbrackie. Around the back of Woodside was next on our way to Charleston and Mt Torrens, then to Tungkillo, Palmer and finally to the Pretoria Hotel in Mannum for lunch. The temperature slowly rose all day and was getting rather warm by the time we got to lunch; it was a great day out, even though a certain Silver FJR had a close encounter with mother earth. 11th November Day Ride to the Pt Elliott that looked awfully like Meadows There were around 20 of us at Maccas, I was feeling really crook again; can t seem to shake this bloody flu, so I changed the destination. Anyway, we set off to Norton Summit and on to Summertown, through the Piccadilly Valley and Bridgewater, Verdun and then on to River Road and Mylor. We then went through Longwood and Cherry Gardens, Clarendon, through Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale for morning tea. We then made our way to Aldinga, rode along the foreshore to Silversands and on to the Main South Road to Myponga. We then went along Hindmarsh Tiers Road, made a detour along Nettle Hill Road and onto the Victor Road, from where we headed back to Cleland Gully Road, which we followed to Bull Creek Road to Meadows for lunch. We had a good group, as usual, and most made it to the lunch destination, including Harry (postman pat) on a shiney new GOLDWING, never thought I d see the day. Pitmans Sponsored Ride NOT HAPPY JAN! Right, got that off my chest! There were around 26 or so of us at Yamaha Pitmans for their annual sponsored ride. After we had a wonderful sausage, bacon and egg brekkie, wonderfully prepared by Doug, Brenton, Barry and Mary Hall (thanks for your efforts guys), we set off whilst Doug was closing the sale of a shiny new Yamaha. We made our way up to Ansteys Hill and on through Houghton, Inglewood, Chain of Ponds and Cuddlee Creek on route to Lobethal. We then headed to Swamp Road and then Balhannah for a coffee and comfort stop. We then made our way to Nairne and headed towards Woodside, before turning to Brakunga, Nairne and through Mt Barker Springs to Mt Barker, Flaxley and on to Macclesfield, where we turned to Meadows. Along Bull Creek Road was next to Ashbourne and then on to Strathalbyn for a light lunch and much chit chat. 25th November Day Ride to Pt Elliott There was around 16 of us at Civic Park in near perfect conditions; the call was made to go to Pt Elliott instead of Williamstown. So, off we went through Chain of Ponds, Cuddlee Creek and Lenswood, then along Swamp Road,Greenhill Road and around the back way to Verdun. Next along River Road and Echunga where we turned and made our way towards Mt Barker and then Flaxley. Thought I d confuse a few here, as we turned back to Echunga and then on to Meadows for morning tea, where we were met by Brian and his lovely wife. From here, it was through the Kuitpo Forest, Pages Flat Road to Myponga, then along the Main Road to Yankalilla. where things got a little cloudy. We made our way along Inman Valley Road and to Parawa where it really looked like it was going to rain; we shivered our way (well some softies did) to Victor Harbor and then to a really busy Pt Elliott for lunch where there was a long wait at the bakery just to get in the door. So most of us went accross the road to the pub for lunch. It was a great day, well, it was for all but 1 of us who decided to park his LT horizontaly instead of vertically, I told Brian we wouldn t mention his name :-) 11

16 Presentation of Cheque to BACA As many of you already know, Sue and Dale raise funds every year, through the selling of the Entertainment Books. Sue and Dale decided that, as they had heard so much about BACA from CAZ [a BACA member who attends the Adelaide meetings with her husband STRECH] and believe BACA is a great cause, this year they would donate the proceeds from the Entertainment Books to BACA. They presented the Cheque to CAZ, at the Ulysses (Adelaide) November meeting who in turn presented it to SNAB (President) and DECOY (Vice President), BACA SA chapter at their November meeting. Who are BACA you may ask... well if you have not heard of them, their mission statement tells all you need to know... BACA Mission Statement Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. We exist as a body of Bikers to empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. We stand ready to lend support to our wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organisation. We work in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. We desire to send a clear message to all involved with the abused child that this child is part of our organisation, and that we are prepared to lend our physical and emotional support to them by affiliation, and our physical presence. We stand at the ready to shield these children from further abuse. We do not condone the use of violence or physical force in any manner, However, if circumstances arise such that we are the only obstacle preventing a child from further abuse, we stand ready to be that obstacle. To learn more about BACA check out the web site. www. bacaworld.org To make further donations see Caz at the Adelaide meetings {when she is there with her Husband STRECH}, or make donation direct by mail to BACA South Australia Chapter Inc. PO Box 152 EDWARDSTOWN SA 5039 Cheers Ride safe CAZ Mount Gambier Odyssey The Black Jumper We d made the decision nearly one year ahead. Worked out the details and booked our bed. Just day s ride - not too far away to settle in quietly and enjoy our stay. For those who know of my packing frenzy, I hope you have some sympathy; The week before Mount Gambier was a major challenge for me! It was cold when I first started the heap growing on the spare room floor. Then it turned hot so, of course, as you d expect, I just added some more. We finally heard, by the end of the week, it would be back to winter and definitely bleak- What to do - there was only one track: Pull out old faithful - the cashmere black! It s served me faithfully for twenty-five years; kept me warm and kept me from tears. Bought in London - it is now growing old; Expensive, at the time, but worth its weight in gold. The weekend was a great success - Thank you to all who took part. Although the weather was not kind to us, everything worked well from the start. I could have left most of my heap on the floor; not worried about packing just that bit more. I certainly didn t stand out from the pack, because most of the time I wore my jumper of black. Geraldine Murray #2300 After 100 years lying on the sea bed, Irish divers were amazed to find that the Titanic s swimming pool was still full. 20 Rides leave from the Solomon town Caltex Service Station unless otherwise stipulated. SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE AT HOT BREAD SHOP NEXT YEAR S PLANNING if you have any suggestions for next year then let me know. Some suggestions have been discussed such as overnighters to Hahndorf, Leigh Creek and Barmera and long weekend trip to Broken Hill. Ride Calendar. Note all official rides will have a ride leader and tail end Charlie (who will always be last at the back of the group). We will also use Corner Marshals when the ride leader thinks it is required. This means the rider immediately behind the leader will stop and wait on the corner when the ride leader indicates by pointing to the corner. This rider will then remain on the corner directing other riders until tail end Charlie passes. If you are willing to be corner marshal then you need to ride up front behind the ride leader. If you don t then do not ride immediately behind the ride leader. The system will work if adhered to and lets everyone ride with the confidence that they will not get lost or left behind. The ride leader is responsible for relaying the route to the group prior to leaving and - with the tail end Charlie - for knowing how many bikes are in the group. If you intend leaving or joining the ride at a particular point please let the ride leader and tail end Charlie know in advance. DECEMBER - Vacant 23rd December last Sunday morning coffee before Christmas. CHRISTMAS SHOW Christmas show will once again be a home show. Watch this space for further information. Beverly May Cowell weekender For those that weren t able to make it or didn t wake up in time (Phil ) we had a pleasant weekend. The ride home via Cleve- Kimba was a beauty; thanks to Cossie for the suggestion. As the photos show, lifebuoys on the ferry were strictly reserved for Ducatis, and there s a place on earth where only grey nomads and Ulysses motorcyclists would dare to be seen. Cheers Dave Martin A German tourist jumped into freezing water and saved my precious little dog. Upon getting back on the bridge, he checked out my puppy and told me, Ze dog is OK. He vill be fine. Due to his selfless heroic act, I asked, Are you a vet? He replied, Vet? I m f*%king soaked! 23

21 SA RV Roundup AGM at Yarrawonga What a great time of the year it was to be getting away. On the way to Yarrawonga, we caught up with a few folk at Gunbower Island. The campgrounds are five minutes from the town of Koondrook. This is a 50 km island covering an area of 22,000 hectares, with the Murray River on one side and the Gunbower Creek on the other side. It is free camping with some very pretty spots to set up camp; well worth a stop if you are in the location. We awoke the next day to a magnificent chorus of birds. It felt and sounded like paradise. A very leisurely breakfast was had and we hit the road for Yarrawonga. Yarrawonga is situated on Lake Mulwala which was formed by the building of a weir across the River Murray in the 1930s. On the other side of the River is the township of Mulwala. It is a very scenic area with lake and surrounding parks. We made our way to the caravan park to be greeted by folk from all over the country; it was fabulous. The Yarrawonga caravan park is huge with first class facilities. They had set up a marquee for our use opposite the large camp kitchen. The sunset crowd soon moved in with a few drinks and nibbles, and lots to talk about. Another mob joined us after their River Boat cruise on the lake. They all agreed on how lovely the Lake is, especially at sunset. After tea, we all settled into a rollicking fun evening. The days rolled by with some carefree touring of the district and some shopping in the main shopping strip. The weather could not have been better. It induced a lovely atmosphere to sit under the shade of the beautiful gums and drink and talk. People just kept arriving at the caravan park. The turn out from South Australia was fabulous. SA RV events for 2012 RV events are open to any Ulysses member or partner. Any type of vehicle can be used to get you there, what is important is that you are there. Any further enquiries contact Hobbit or Hoppy on hoho@ulyssesrv.org Hoppy on or Hobbit on January 2013 Australia Day with Fleurieu Branch Kalganyi Caravan Park - Mt Gambier Any further enquiries contact Hobbit or Hoppy on hoho@ulyssesrv.org Hoppy on or Hobbit on with some careful driving. The van was soon hooked up and we proceeded on home. The Ho Ho team would like to thank everyone who helped or came along to the RV Weekends this year. The group has grown with Ulysses members from many of our State Branches represented. We hope to be doing the calendar for next year shortly so if you have any good ideas for camping spots please let us know as soon as possible. If you know of someone that is not on our list please get them to send us an at hoho@ulyssesrv.org and we will keep them up-to-date with events. Remember: Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves are not Happy. Happy wanderings Hoppy & Hobbit hoho@ulyssesrv.org All too soon, it was Saturday and we had the AGM. The raffles were big and the speeches small. Rick Bedford is to be the almighty leader for another year. We all thanked him for this as he has put in a lot of effort. The Ho Ho team, (Hoppy & Hobbit) is to be the South Australian co-ordinators again. In nearly record time the meeting was over with enough time to scrub up and get ready for the meal at the nearby footy club. It was a beautiful night and we had a lovely tea. More talking, laughing and a few drinks started a fun night. These events can be tough; it is just lucky we have been in training. A big Well Done to all those involved in organising the event, it has was fabulous! After some very pleasant days spent relaxing and socialising, it was with some reluctance that we started to pack up the next day. The really great thing about these events is catching up with old friends and making new ones as well. The trip home was quiet, right up until a fellow traveller realised that a gas only vehicle really still needs to be filled up with gas. With 7 km left on the fuel gauge and 35 km to the petrol station, we stopped to have a rethink. We decided to have drinks and nibbles, get tea ready and worry about it tomorrow. This was the kind of solution I think I like. As we couldn t put any gas into the car, we unhitched the caravan and I followed him to the petrol station. It is amazing how fuel efficient the car was 24 Phone (08) Mobile: Mastervac Engineering Specialising in Repairs and Service to BRAKE BOOSTERS - CHANGE-OVER SERVICE 75 Day Terrace WEST CROYDON SA 5008 It s fixed or it s free!

23 Ulysses Club Inc. Whyalla & Districts Branch Meet and Greet top shopz deli on McDouall Stuart ave, [Next to Harris scarfes]. At 9:30am on the first and third Sunday of the month starting Sunday 22nd January. Ride Co-ordinators Di Lehman - phone Graham Gill - phone I am part of the Area 172 Neighborhood Watch group and we raise money for community projects in Whyalla, and earlier this year, the committee was thinking of their next project when I suggested that we make a concerted effort to raise funds for this year s Toy Run and the kids in Whyalla. They thought it was a great idea. We have conducted six Sausage Sizzles at Stratco (they supplied the sausages) and the profits went directly to the Toy Run. We also held a major Fathers Day raffle that was drawn at the Whyalla Show. Consequently, we raised the magnificent sum of $ for the toys. On approaching Target, they gave us an extra $ worth of toys, raising the total to $1, I then contacted one of our (Ulysses) members in the Salvation Army and she recommended what toys were needed, and then myself and Perry with Chris Roberts, from Neighborhood Watch, went to Target and picked out the toys. We were a little worried at one stage when the Target staff wanted Perry and I to strip to the waist and demonstrate the Hoola Hoops at the front of the store. We finally convinced them that it wouldn t be a good look and would drive customers away. Overall, it was a great community effort and many thanks go to Stratco, Target and the Salvation Army. Hopefully, next year we can do something similar and get more non motorcycling groups involved. One thing to keep in mind for future Toy Runs was that the Salvation Army specifically asked us for toys for the 5-12 age group and not to get stuffed toys or toys that needed batteries, as they found it very difficult to find homes for those types of toys. Regards Graham Gill 26

He was on his way to Alice Springs from Coonabarabran to visit his daughter. The guys from Whyalla helped him on the spot and took care of what was left of his bike as far as storage and insurance, etc. Quite apart from his injuries, his bike caught fire and was almost totally destroyed, along with just about all his possessions. He had a tank bag and, luckily, this flew off the bike and was saved as it held his wallet and credit cards, etc. He was admitted to Port Augusta Hospital, but, due to the severity of his injuries, he was flown to the RAH. I visited him on the day of his admittance to 27 the RAH, and have done so on several occasions since. I purchased some basic items for him and he was very happy to see a friendly face. I assured him that any help the Adelaide Branch could render would be forthcoming He has since had several operations, including plastic surgery and an ankle reconstruction. I saw him again Saturday, and he is much improved and off Morphine. He has advised me that the hospital had told him he may be flown back to NSW, when sufficiently recovered, as he will be in no condition to either walk or drive for some time. Good to see the spirit of our club in action. Cheers Ray Murray

25 Mid-weeker to Melrose A combination of cars and bikes met at Munno Para C/P in perfect weather. We rode through beautiful surroundings through Clare and Laura, and arrived early afternoon in Melrose - one of our favourite spots. Settled into the bunkhouse and cabins, and all came together for drinks and nibbles, and then a tasty BBQ diner. Another lovely day on Thursday; there were rides of various lengths - some of us only seem to make it as far as Quorn, where there is the Quondong Cafe - can recommend the cheesecake!! That evening, we all crossed the street to the Hotel Remarkable and enjoyed our meal. Lots of laughs and time spent with great friends. Top: Alvin, Peter, Hazel, Annette and Ian at the BBQ tea. Above: Mick, Annette and Ian, with Geraldine and Kath in the background, at Laura. Below: A visit to Quorn is not complete without a stop at the Qundong Cafe Thank you to all, especially Mick and Doreen, who booked and catered for us all. Geraldine Murray #
