1 THE WHALER Presidents Chat ULYSSES CLUB INC. FLEURIEU BRANCH NEWSLETTER November 2017 Hello All, Well, 3 months has come and gone. Judy and I toured to Darwin, then down the west coast of WA to the Margaret River region. Finally, across the Nullabor, to home, 15,340 Kms in total. While we were away, fellow committee members ably looked after our positions. A huge thanks to all for a job well done. Sadly, again, I announce the passing of another one of our members, Dave Bell. The funeral was held on Friday the 27 th of October with a very good turn out of bikes. Thanks to all that attended. On your behalf, a sympathy card was sent to Claire. The issue of membership financial status has come up again, please folks, go to the Ulysses web page, log on, and check whether you are financial. The Warren Jamieson Award for the member who s contribution to the branch has been outstanding will be presented at the Christmas show on the 2 nd of December. We had two equally deserving candidates. However, because of NatCom rulings, one was not eligible. (no spoilers). Ok, that s enough from me, other than, there has been an increase in motorcycle related injuries and deaths, particularly among the older group this year. The cause is irrelevant; it is us that get hurt. So, please people, be visible, be observant, and most of all, ride safe. Cheers, Brett. 1

4 Rides/Event Reports October 22 nd Barra s Cherry Gardens CFS Run If there is, like the song says a stairway to heaven, then I reckon our members were a couple o rungs up today. To see all you folk with burgers in hand, glued to the big screen watching Moto GP, ecstasy on your faces, paints a picture of near heaven. Barbie said we re blessed at Ulysses And I reckon she s right. You guys are the best, the very best. Another great ride today, showcasing everything that is Fleurieu Branch. Green rolling hills, breathtaking views, lots of curves, some gentle some severe. With lots of new faces to add to our Rogues Gallery. Barra reckons it was mostly main roads, but I don t know. I never know where the hell we are, so it works for me. Bravo anyway Alan, you led well and the CFS effort was outstanding. Please let s do it every year. Stay safe folks. GPS 4

5 November 12 th Max s Meander to Wellington The wind is tugging at his mo', a sight you shoulda seen His fist around the throttle tight, as round the curve he swept Is this the last, before the straight? I guess it coulda been But no! another bend in sight, he s lost it, Jesus wept! False alarm, he has control, he s good, he went into a lean A turning looms up ahead, he s searching for some depth To place the marshal on the left, to signal the stalwart team Road signs are flashing by right now, for he is making tracks White line stretches before him now, more road than you d a dream A chance to blow the cobwebs off, and clear away the earwax He leads us home all safe and sound with eyes that kinda gleam I m glad we had a ride today, along with the mighty Max! Today was the day I shoulda had my handlebar camera on. Woulda made a great movie, riding near the rear with twenty odd bikes in front, so impressive. This has to be just about the best time of the year to ride. It s still really spring, with all the colours and fragrances of spring but with warm weather. And didn t we see some countryside? McLaren Vale, Kangarilla, Meadows, Hahndorf, Monarto, Callington, Murray Bridge, Wellington, and all the hamlets in between. Lunch at the Wellington pub (beautiful spot) where the food was exceptional, as was the company. Lovely to welcome some more new faces, hope you enjoyed the day and hope to see you on more rides. 7 2017 City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant Sunday 26 November Our branch is once again participating in the Pageant! Last year it was a lot of fun so we welcome everyone to come along and join in with the Christmas spirit. All you need to do is decorate yourself and your bike and meet at 9 am at the Harvey Norman/Spotlight car park on seaman road Noarlunga Downs Fleurieu Pageant Riders lead by Trevor and Julie Members Articles Day Run To Coffin Bay (Guy Malpass #10680 ) I woke up early Friday 27-Oct, over the last few days I had packed my panniers. Now to load the bike up and head to Krispy Kreme at Bolivar to meet up with the other people heading to Coffin Bay for the 4 day ride organized by the Adelaide Branch. As always any Ulysses member from any branch is welcome. It is common to get people from Torrens Valley, Fleurieu branches and others. As I was sipping on a coffee and eating a donut other members started to arrive. Leaving at 8:30 we had 4 bikes and a car. As we are getting older more people are starting to use cars for these events, which is great that they can still come. We headed to Port Wakefield for a coffee and pick up another rider that was running late, leaving for Port Augusta for lunch about 10am. It was now getting quite hot and very windy, we also had a bit of rain making riding a little uncomfortable. At Port Augusta we stopped at the new OTR for fuel and lunch, here we were met up with James and Heather Bart. Leaving I think we now had 2 cars and 7 or maybe 8 bikes. Temp still rising somewhere between 38⁰ to 40⁰C and still very strong winds, fuel economy due to the head wind was well down. A 30min fuel and rest stop at Cowell was welcomed by all. We arrived at the caravan park about 5pm and checked into our cabins. Other people had arrived earlier in the day and some even the day before, some in tents and camper trailers, Mike Green and Carolyn where telling us how hard it was to erect their tent in the strong wind. We had a total of 18 people for the BBQ tea in the camp kitchen / Gazebo area that night. 7

8 After a fabulous breakfast Saturday morning in the camp kitchen we had a free morning so I went for a spin to Port Lincoln (45 Km s away), I had a look around the town and visited a couple of OP shops but not finding anything of interest to buy. On my return I had heavy showers to contend with but they didn t last long. I got back in time to do an oyster tour for about 1hr. We got to sample 5 fresh oysters while listening to a commentary about their history in the bay. That afternoon a few of us again braved the weather and went to Port Lincoln to the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum, the museum has been collecting stuff for a very long time. That evening tea was held at the Coffin Bay Hotel, we were picked up by their courtesy bus. That was a nice meal shared with great company. Sunday again after breakfast in cool and wet weather all the bikes and 2 cars did a great ride around the peninsula from Coffin Bay to Elliston via Mount Hope and Sheringa where we stopped for fuel and coffee (140Km s). We left for a stop at Lock (92 Km s) to find literally everything in the town to be closed. Moving on we stopped at Cummins (82 Km s) about 2PM and had lunch at the hotel. The staff were amused when we rearranged the dining room to accommodate our large numbers, and pleased when we put it back the way we found it when we left. Most of the ride home was in very wet, windy weather a distance of 55 Km s. That evening some ventured out in the rain to go to the Coffin Bay Yacht Club just over ½ Km away. Me, I stayed dry in my cabin.:). The evening ended with drinks in Ken and Michelle s cabin, we stayed till about 11pm before heading to bed. I had done most of my packing, just a few minutes in the morning and to load up the bike. I was planning on leaving about 8:30 after breakfast. I was due home about 4:30. After breakfast Monday morning and saying goodbye to everyone I headed to Kimba at about 8:30. It was still very windy and I had a couple of clearing showers. At Kimba I fuelled the bike and went to see the new painted silo there, what a beauty, it is well worth a visit. The rest of the ride home was uneventful arriving about 5pm just in time for our weekly family tea at my daughter Jacqualine s home. This has been another great weekend away, I love these and I m looking forward to more as I m sure everyone else is, we have a lot of great people from all the branches that enjoy these getaways.
