All monthly meetings will be held at Heworth Community Centre, Stray Road, Burnholme, York YO31 0HG (off A1079 within York Ring Road). By bus from York station: Using Coastline 840, 843 or 845 (Coast bound) leaving at c.7, 27 and 47 minutes past each hour to Stockton Lane. Return from Stockton Lane at 06, 26 and 46 minutes past each hour. Using First York Bus nr 13 to Stockton Lane (Junction Hempland Lane) leaving at 22 and 52 minutes past each hour. Return from Stockton Lane at 21 and 51 minutes past each hour. Using First York Bus nr 11 to Applecroft Road/Stray Road (right outside Centre) leaving at 05 and 35 minutes past returning at 01 and 31 minutes past each hour until 6.00 pm. From Stockton Road walk along Whitby Road (Medical Centre on left) follow road around to left and then right into Applecroft Road. Community Centre is on the right just past Hempland School. 3 EDITORIAL: Welcome to the March issue, thanks to Sandy for his article without which this would be very thin! I am in desperate need of material!! NEWS A change to the diary as Freemo & Heworth are both exhibiting on the dates of our group Open Weekend; it has been decided to cancel the October DCC meeting and bring the Open Weekend forward a week to October 21st/22nd. Whilst reading a forum about DCC, comments were being made about the use (and expense) of Kapton tape which is used to insulate decoders etc., and someone mentioned this which I thought might be of interest.: Search ebay for Polyimide tape and its very cheap, its the same thing as the brand name of Kapton. If you do a search on Amazon you find it is! 4 Some articles worth reading in the spring issue of n gauge now on royal Scots and jubilees There are also some books which I have been reading that other might think are worth looking at Railway disasters by Robin Jones. It is 131 pages long. Modelling European railways by Peter Marriot 220 pages available from AS Trip to Eindhoven Due to inconvenient flight times to Eindhoven from Manchester it was more convenient to fly to Amsterdam Schiphol from Leeds Bradford, an early rise for the KLM 6:10 flight, an hour and a half later at Schiphol had us eating a great omelette with onions and mushrooms followed by a croissant for breakfast. Since there was no queue at the NS [Nederlandse Spoorwegen] ticket office we used that instead of the machine to buy our ticket, what a breath of fresh air, on NS there is only one fare for every journey, plus 1.00 for the disposable ticket, [it is now expected that all Dutch people have a OV Chipkaart, similar to an oyster card but covers the whole country, so the $1.00 is for the disposable card]. Down the appropriate escalator and you are on the platform, the direct service to Eindhoven is every 30 minutes or half way between these services there is one with a change at Utrecht, we chose the direct service since it saved lugging the bag on and off the trains. Our train to Eindhoven was an Intercity VIRM [Verlengd InterRegio Materieel] double deck electric unit although the interior was looking a little worse for wear it was comfortable and the windows lined up with the seats, information screens in every coach and fast free wifi. The infrastructure all the way to Eindhoven was really clean and tidy and smooth. On arrival at Eindhoven the train splits into two to complete its respective journeys, this is done as passengers are alighting and boarding with the front unit creeping forward about half a meter. On board catering is sparse when it is available but consists of somebody with a tank of hot water strapped to their back with cups mounted on the side and a large tray in front with snacks etc, no carts because they could not get up and down the stairs! 6 Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the Yorkshire Area Group of the N Gauge Society Held in York on Saturday 28 th of February 2017 The meeting was chaired by the Area Secretary Steven Bateman (16 members present plus 1 potential member) Apologies for absence were received from David Guy, Sandy Clark, Mike Hudson, David Harrison, Don Summers and Norman Raven 2016 AGM Minutes It was proposed by Jim Scott and seconded by John Pagdin that the minutes as circulated were accepted as a true record and the vote was unanimous. Matters Arising: SB raised a concern about the state of the website, in that it wasn t particularly useful (or appealing) for potential new members; and was concerned that Peter had not been seen for some time. DM pointed out that the last contact he had was that Peter was in the US. MH offered to check and update the dates on the site. Secretary s Report: Steven said we had had another good year, Heworth had been to a number of shows culminating with the trip to Stuttgart (with further invites for this year); that the FREEMO members were getting invites to various events.. He also passed round details of the new RTR loco to be produced by the NGS (a Hunslet shunter). Hoped to be DCC ready, would cost around and would be produced designed by Colin Albright (ex-bachman) and produced independently by a factory in China. The NGS is also making available a roll-up banner (7ft tall) advertising the NGS with an area group logo on. It had been asked if the pictures (all British models) could be altered to reflect the interest of the area group, but this appears to be a non-starter. SB said he would try again and ask if the artwork could be made available so we could make up our own version (One would be ordered anyway as the NGS are paying Treasurer s Report : Sandy being absent, DM read out his report and passed round a copy of the accounts. We are owed from the NGS which would make this years total very similar to last. He recommended that the annual fee ( 10) and meeting fee ( 5) remain the same. He passed on his thanks to David Jefferson for acting as auditor. David Milburn proposed, and Alan Pearmain seconded acceptance of the accounts passed unanimously Exhibition Manager s Report: none post vacant MagNnet Editor s Report: David thanked all those who had contributed, and asked for more contributions! As he has now completed 6 years as Editor, he hoped someone else would want to take over, but as none one had expressed an interest, he agreed to continue. SB also asked that members should try and write something a model or book review, something they had built anything! Standing Committee: No change to this. Working Committee: No change - so the committee for 2016 will be Area Secretary; Steven Bateman; Treasurer: Alexander Clark; Exhibition Manager: vacant; MagNnet Editor: David Milburn A vote of thanks was propose by Jim Scott and seconded by Tony Harrison to the officers for their work over the year (passed unanimously) Any Other Business: 1. It had been announced yesterday at Glasgow Show that Revolution Trains were going ahead with their plan to produce a Class B tank wagon, but orders were still needed. Only the Esso and all-black varieties were likely to be produced as singles and 3-packs. Other liveries would only be singles or not at all. 2. David Jefferson is not going to renew his membership this year but is willing to continue as Auditor. 3. The Open Weekend was discussed as the Freemo team and Heworth Sidings would be away taking part in shows, so JP suggested we cancel the October DCC meeting,and move the Open Weekend to the week before (October 21st/22nd).This was agreed and the changes were given to the caretaker. 4. A long discussion was held in relation to the problems of attracting new members. Positive suggestions including having a proper A5 poster to have in model shops; an advert in the York Free papers just to say we exist with a contact number; leaving piles of small leaflets at shows for visitors to pick up; SB to ask for a list to circulate group details to members of the NGS living in our area. Also suggested having a table at the NGS in Grimsby later this year. We will return to this topic later!. 5. The loft has been cleared of all our surplus stuff please take what you want the rest will be taken to the tip. 6. 7 Laser Cut Baseboard Kits A couple of weeks ago we received our first package of laser cut baseboards From Simon Ansell. They came direct from the cutters in Barnsley packaged with must have been a whole roll of parcel tape. Inside were 4 boards with all the pieces wrapped in cling film Following some simple instructions, the pieces fit together very easily, and the smaller boards can be picked up without any glue. First impressions are very favourable, and they have now been dropped off in York at our master builders for assembly. Pictured below is a 42 x 12 board with double thickness ends and corner bracing with slots for 2 square legs.
