3 FOREWORD MIDLAND RAILWAY & CONSTITUENT COMPANIES TIMETABLE FINDING AID This work is the result of a collaboration between the National Railway Museum and the Midland Railway Study Centre under the Partners in Excellence scheme. It is presented as two downloadable PDFs, one formatted for viewing and the other for duplex printing either as a whole or in selected sections. The content of both is identical, and it is intended that they will be updated as required with any additions and/or amendments. The object is to assist researchers in locating timetables held in three repositories that are available to the public: THE NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM Located at Leeman Road, York, YO26 4XJ, the website as shown above gives a wealth of information about the museum including full details of opening hours and accessibility. It also provides access to its online library and archive collection lists. THE MIDLAND RAILWAY STUDY CENTRE Housed in Derby s Silk Mill, the Study Centre is a collaboration formed by The Midland Railway Society and Derby Museums; its address is Silk Mill Lane, off Full Street, Derby, DE1 3AF. The website as shown above gives visiting details and also provides a link to the Study Centre Catalogue. THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES Located at Kew, Richmond, Surry, TW9 4DU, the website as shown above provides all necessary details about this hugely important national resource, with full information about visiting and registration. It also provides on-line access to Discovery, the catalogue that holds more than 32 million descriptions of records held by and more than 2,500 archives across the country. The National Archives have kindly given permission for the listings that make up this finding aid to quote catalogue references from Discovery. All entries on these listings have been verified by a physical check of the actual documents held by all three organisations. Thanks are due to Mervyn Bryce for his invaluable work in formatting the finished documents. David G Geldard Roy F Burrows July 2017 i

7 MIDLAND RAILWAY & CONSTITUENT COMPANIES TIMETABLE FINDING AID - INTRODUCTION This publication lists the public and working timetables of the Midland Railway and its constituent companies held by three organisations where public access is allowed to their collections. The two principal constituents are, on the mainland, the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway (LT&SR) that was absorbed with effect from 7 August 1912 and, in Northern Ireland, the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway (B&NCR) that was absorbed on 1 July Timetables issued by Joint Lines in which the Midland Railway had an interest are not included in this work. The title Timetable tended to be used somewhat indiscriminately by the Midland Railway on a wide range of documents and publications and it is necessary to define which are or are not covered in these listings. PUBLIC TIMETABLES These are usually simply titled with the company name and Timetable(s) (singular or plural and often formed of two separate words). In addition to the principal all-line timetables, many timetables were produced with limited geographical or line coverage, although far fewer of these have survived than is the case with all line versions. The following are not included in the listings: sheet timetables which were displayed on posterboards at stations, etc. privately published timetables (including Bradshaw). publicity leaflets, holiday guides, handbills, brochures, etc. which, although often described as or including timetables, contained only incomplete information, i.e. just the partial timings of selected trains considered relevant to the particular subject being publicised. Posters and notices which contained timetable information. Four listings are provided as follows: P1 P2 P3 P4 All-line Midland Railway public timetables for the mainland. Midland Railway public regional or local timetables with limited coverage. These are included provided that the services in the tables are complete for the area or line concerned. LT&SR public timetables and, from August 1912, their post-absorption successors with the Midland Railway (LT & S Section) title. On and from 1 October 1920 the LT&S Section of the Midland was fully merged for all purposes in the general undertaking of the company (a circular letter to that effect from the LTS to other Railway Companies is held by the Scottish Record Office - item BR/NBR/4/24). A separate Section timetable with effect from 4 October 1920 was published, but the line was also included in the Midland Railway public timetable for the same date. The separate timetable was then discontinued, with the line simply being shown as Section 4 of the MR timetables. B&NCR public timetables and, from 1 July 1903, their post-absorption successors with the Midland Railway (Northern Counties Committee) title. 1

8 WORKING TIMETABLES The object of the working timetable (WTT) was to provide information for use of the company s servants only on the detailed timings of all trains both passenger and freight which ran on a regular basis. In later years WTTs were issued basically in sections by route covering (until October 1917) both passenger and freight trains and were often bound together in all-line format known as bound or combined volumes. As with public timetables there were separate series for the mainland, the former LT&SR lines and the B&NCR/Northern Counties Committee. In October 1917 the Midland started to publish separate Passenger and Freight WTTs, except for the Hereford Hay and Brecon and South Wales lines. These were omitted from the all-line tables and were instead presented as a separate publication covering both passenger and freight services. Copies are bound in with the all-line WTTs. In addition, a whole range of documents, supplements and operating notices were issued some regularly, some irregularly which incorporated the words working timetable or even just timetable in the title. Examples are Working Timetable Monthly Notices, notices covering one day or one special occurrence, e.g. a Royal Train journey, and working timetables of excursion trains. These fall outside the scope of this finding aid, as do the documents entitled Appendix to the Working Timetable. The latter contained much information necessary to the smooth working of the railway but did not contain actual timetables. The information in these appendices was of a semi-permanent nature and they were therefore issued at less frequent intervals than the WTTs themselves only 26 were produced during the 79 years of the Midland s existence. Four listings are provided as follows: W1 All-line Midland Railway working timetables for the mainland. W2 Midland Railway regional or local working timetables with limited coverage. They are included provided the services in the tables are complete for the area or line concerned. W3 LT&SR working timetables and, from August 1912, their post-absorption successors with the Midland Railway (LT&S Section) title. From May 1919 the example of the Midland was followed by changing to separate Passenger and Freight WTTs. The former were discontinued after the October 1920 edition and the line was then included in the all-line Midland tables (Listing W1). In the holdings the LT&S Freight WTTs from May 1919 onwards are bound in with the all-line Midland tables and cross-references are given between Listings W3 and W1. W4 B&NCR working timetables and, from 1 July 1903, their post-absorption successors with the Midland Railway (Northern Counties Committee) title. 2

9 OTHER MAINLAND CONSTITUENT COMPANY TIMETABLES This covers timetables of all mainland constituent companies other than the LT&SR. In view of their scarcity both public and working timetables are covered by a single listing: C1 Other constituent company timetables, both public and working. USING THIS FINDING AID Each of the P and W listings is given in date order; listing C1 is in company order. In the chosen listing locate the desired year and month and read across the row. Any holding is indicated by an entry in the relevant column, as a reference either to a single piece for that month (or a period starting therein) or to a bound volume covering several periods (and therefore combining more than one row). Each entry provides the necessary reference for document ordering at the respective repository for the the database Item Number, for the the ID Number and for the full Piece Number for the Discovery catalogue. CONVENTIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS Timetable Listing: Timetables are always listed under the year and month in which validity commenced. The actual day is usually, but not necessarily, the first day or first Monday of the month. Similarly, the final month of a range is the last complete (or nearly so) month for which the timetable was operational. Any run on of a few days into the following month is ignored. Where the period of a timetable extends beyond 31 December, it is not usually repeated in the listing for the following year. ufn: Many timetables were issued to be operational until further notice, and were so printed on the cover and/or one or more internal pages. This is indicated in the listings by the abbreviation ufn in the Period Covered column. X: The period of validity of these was often extended by a notice circulated to all stations and usually detailing some minor service alterations. When such a notice (or more than one consecutive notice) has been seen either affixed to or bound in with the respective timetable at one of the locations then an X in the Period Covered column indicates that the period of validity was extended to the end of the month shown. This does not apply to Listing W1, which is thought to be almost complete from 1855 onwards see the note at the head of the Listing. It is not always possible, particularly in the early years, to determine when a given issue of a timetable was superseded by a new fully printed version. (R): In any listing the notation (R) in the Period Covered column indicates that the item is a photocopy, scan, reprint or other reproduction of the original. : References in the column are to text notes given at the end of that listing. In certain cases the note will describe a known deficiency in a particular timetable, the absence of any such note, however, does not guarantee completeness and in particular the covers and/or map may be missing. 3
