2 BIRCH HILLS NEWSLETTER SPONSOR BIRCH HILLS SENIORS CLUB The Birch Hills Senior Citizens Recreation Club was formed on July 21 st, 1978 with Samuel Foster as President and Louise G. Lewis as secretary. The objective of the group was to provide a place where Senior Citizens 50 years or older could gather for games, dancing, parties, socializing and craft instructions. A membership fee was established and upon payment it was approved by the directors. The objectives, code of ethics, articles and bylaws were very well written and are used by the present seniors club. The seniors meet in the former Masonic Hall which has served them very well over the past 40 years. As we look forward to relocating to the new Multi-Purpose building, it is time to rejuvenate the Club by encouraging new members to join and inviting people to rent the hall for birthday parties, anniversaries, funeral lunches, etc. We recently applied for a New Horizons Grant that will enable us to replace some of the ageing equipment, purchase new games and get ready for the new building. We want to thank Jessica Kernohan, our new Recreation Director, for her help with the application. We will soon have a Seniors Club page on Facebook and we invite you to follow us. The Heartbeat newsletter is a real asset in our community. The Seniors Club is pleased to sponsor the July edition and encourage other groups and individuals to do the same. We are members of SSAI, Saskatchewan Seniors Association Incorporated, which boast having 120 clubs and a membership of about 5,000. It is interesting to note that Annie Douglas, mother of future Premier of Saskatchewan Tommy Douglas, was one of the strong people who saw a real need for seniors to organize. In 1939 Annie Douglas became the founding president of Pensioners & Pioneers, Number One. She held the position for 18 years. Please join us at 2:00 pm on July 21, 2018 as we have a party to celebrate our 40 th Anniversary at the Seniors Hall located at 370 Bellamy Avenue. There will be fun and games, a sing-a-long, socializing and, of course, lunch to go with it. Everyone Welcome! An Open Invitation to The Birch Hills Seniors Club 40th Anniversary Party Saturday July 21, :00-4:00 pm Senior Hall, 370 Bellamy Ave. Dessert & Coffee (No Charge) Enjoy some games or just come for a visit, bring a friend 2

6 It s Time to Ask... :) Sometimes we need a helping hand...and it s hard to ask. But sometimes the goal is worth the risk, so here we are. Looking back to 2009, our Town had friction between youth and adults, largely hinged on skateboarding. Instead of remaining in the 30 year cycle, a group of youth, parents and RYSC Youth Group committed to working together to fundraise and build a small Skatepark for our Community. What started out as a simple idea has resulted in a Community Park that not only has a modest concrete Skatepark, but a full size concrete basketball court as well. As each phase of the Park was completed, other ideas from community members came forward which resulted in a large community garden, a sandbox and play area for younger children, and a large grassed play area for wide games in the future. Saskatoon and Chokecherry trees were planted which will be available to community members for picking as they mature. As the Park grew in size and use, we set a final goal of a Camp Gazebo with washrooms. The original budget at the beginning of 2016 was set at $20,000. By the Spring of 2017 the budget was increased to $35,000 with the desire to build a 40 x 60 Camp Gazebo which would contain 2 washrooms and replace the storage for our Park equipment previously provided by our Sea Can. The addition of this Camp Gazebo would enable the Park to be utilized for Family/School Reunions, birthday parties as well as provide shelter and seating for the weekly planned Community Weiner Roasts and other recreational and family events held at the Park. It has become a place where people of all ages gather to garden, to visit and to play. Our Park in the only recreation facility in our area that is of no cost to the user or to the taxpayer, fully built and maintained by fundraising, volunteers and donations. In Summer of 2017 RYSC Youth Group entered the Tangerine 20 contest and with unbelievable community/provincial support was awarded the $20,000 Grand Prize! Excited to be at a point of completing the Park, we received quotes for the Gazebo only to find that the prices of building materials had escalated and our Budget needed to be increased to $60,000. In an effort to continue to raise needed funds, RYSC partnered with Birch Hills Minor Sports to conduct a Let s Go Fishing Raffle. Tickets are on sale from Minor Sports or at the Youth Centre or by ing bhfishingrafflle@gmail.com and will be drawn for at a Community BBQ at the Park on August 1 at 6:00 pm. We have until August to begin construction so time is running short. Downsize (to a smaller building of 2 washrooms) or dream on... that becomes our choice. Before we make that choice we are reaching out to anyone who may wish to donate to create a much needed and appreciated addition to our Community Park. Receipts for Charitable Donations are available and any amount is greatly appreciated. For more information please feel free to call Clint or Kathy at the Youth Center at Our Children, our Youth, our Families and our Community appreciate your consideration.
