2 STATEMENT and FINE PRINT Information World War 2 Jeeps NSW is NOT a formal Motor Vehicle Club, but more an Association of WW2 Jeep enthusiasts, bonded together by this e newsletter. It s sole intention is to share information about their vehicles, future displays, trips and events. 3 Cliff s Say... I hope everybody is fit and well. I might have mentioned in previous newsletters that my father was in the RAF in India during the Second World War? See further within for his story. A few of us travelled on the weekend to Menangle Military Muster. The attendees were: Brian and Sue Sweet, Les Hennes, Brian s friend Dennis Suttor, Kevin Hillier, Stuart (Gadget) Wearne, Garry Buttel, Scott Rough and myself. Four of the party met at Bulli Tops and challenged the cool morning to get to Menangle for 9 o clock. Unfortunately we could not find a decent coffee shop enroute and to make things worse, there wasn t one at the event. The muster was well attended, I would estimate, at around 90 vehicles on Sunday. The vehicles were from a 1941 Ford GP to a WW2 Wrecker trucks (heavy wreckers), also there was a few re-enactment groups which included black powder, which were like the American Red Coats, an old English village (with sword fighters and Maid Marion s) and the WW2 re-enactment society. There was also a track set up with mud hills and ditches for anybody that wanted to have some fun. The track was well patronised. I even saw a Studebaker 6x6 doing some manoeuvres. I don t think I have ever seen those trucks do anything but drive along the road. All in all it was a great event and well organised except for the lack of a coffee van. Bowraville is coming up on 29 September to 3 October I am hoping that Mitch and I can get something together and do a bit of a run up there and back. It sounds like it will be a great long weekend. Keep checking upcoming newsletters for details. If you have any newsworthy items don t forget to send them to Mitch and if you have a great idea for the theme for our Christmas Party at the Woolshed don t be shy, it s time to share. Keep on Jeeping. I hope to see you around and remember if you see Mitch while you are out and about buy him a cold one. Cliff MARATHON SPARE PARTS CO. Established 40 plus years. 7 Feedback Gday Digger, enclosed (as requested) - Is a special one page Bush Telegraph article on the origin of the Bush Telegraph, which I hope is suitable for the Special Silver Jubilee edition of The Jeep News. Thanks to Bob and Meg Fisher, I was able to use their computer to type the article (with only 2 errors!) and so saving you to do so. If you think it would be of interest, I can reproduce early one page copies of the Tele dating mid to late nineties for either the special edition or future issues of the Jeep News. A step back in time. I have also included a copy of Peter Walkers Newsletter N.25 July 1995 for your Archives. Bob (Ex Tamworth) Jeep owner, sends his best wishes to you and everybody and congratulates to all on the magnificent job you do on publishing the News and he and Meg look forward to every copy, which I pass on. This will be arriving a little later than I anticipated by me because of local flooding and I don t have a Jeep to get me out! Kindest Regards Ian (Old Fart without a Cart!) Thanks Ian and regards back to them. All good for the archives, as I was on the ball when I took over from Cliff, the Newsletter production and thanks to Roughie, was able to fill my folders with missing editions. As part of the Book / Magazine that the Silver Jubilee edition, will be a complete archive of all editions, along with the photographs used on a CD / DVD for reference into the future. I would like to also take the opportunity to thank you for your research of all things interesting and publishing the Bush Telegraph. The World s Greatest Newspaper, always full of great advice. 10 "Don't forget me, Cobber" - (Original Source unknown. It was taken from a Facebook post on the day.) Fromelles has become known as Australia s blackest night. On 19 July 1916, the troops of the 5th Australian and 61st British Divisions attacked a strong German position, at the centre of which stood the Sugar Loaf salient, near the small French village of Fromelles. The overnight assault the first major battle fought by Australian troops on the Western Front was mainly intended as a diversion to draw German troops away from the Somme offensive further south. The attack failed, and losses were great: the 5th Australian Division suffered 5,533 killed and wounded; the 61st British Division suffered 1,547. A Victorian farmer, Sergeant Simon Fraser, was a member of the 57th Battalion AIF one of the 5th Division not in the initial hop over that night, but who were present throughout the battle of Fromelles. In a letter home dated 31 July 1916, Fraser tells of the battle, its preparations and its aftermath. I have been through the mill and came out without a mark, Fraser wrote, except for scratched hands through cutting and putting up wire entanglements. I have been in the trenches since the 10th... for the first ten days, we were in Hell, bombardments of high explosives and shrapnel from both sides every day, but two nights in particular were horries. Fraser was sent out over several nights before the main attack to get the barb wire ready for the charge over. He had become something of an expert in cutting through the enemy entanglements, and was told he would be Mentioned in Despatches for his work though why I don t know, but it is satisfactory to know that you have been appreciated. The 57th Battalion were supporting when the charge was made, he wrote, and had to hold our old line; the battalions who went over, met with too hot a reception and suffered severely; the distance was too far: when we came up the artillery was mixing things up a bit; high explosives and shrapnel were flying everywhere. The bombardment kept up all night and a good few of my mates passed out that night; so far, three of my section have been killed and two wounded badly out of twelve. When the battle was over, Fraser and others began the dangerous and difficult task of retrieving the wounded from no man s land. I must say Fritz treated us very fairly, though a few were shot at the work, he wrote. Some of these wounded were game as lions and got rather roughly handled, but haste was more necessary than gentle handling and we must have brought in over 250 men by our company alone...it was no light work getting in with a heavy weight on your back especially if he had a broken leg or arm and no stretcher bearer was handy. You had to lie down and get him on your back then rise and duck for your life with the chance of getting a bullet in you before you were safe. Over three days the men made these missions to no man s land, looking and listening for those still alive. One foggy morning in particular I remember, we could hear someone, over towards the German entanglements calling for a stretcher bearer; it was an appeal no man could stand against so some of us rushed out and had a hunt, Fraser wrote. We found a fine haul of wounded and brought them in, but it was not where I heard this fellow calling so I had another shot for it and came across a splendid specimen of humanity trying to wiggle into a trench with a big wound in his thigh: he was about 14 stone weight [90 kilograms] and I could not lift him on my back, but I managed to get him into an old trench and told him to lie quiet while I got a stretcher. Then another man about 30 yards [27 metres] out sang out Don t forget me cobber. I went in and got four volunteers with stretchers and we got both men in safely. Fraser was not decorated for his great courage in retrieving the wounded from the battlefield; his efforts were just part of what had to be done. However, his heroism has since been recognised in a sculpture of him by artist Peter Corlett that stands in the Australian Memorial Park at Fromelles. More recently a copy of the sculpture was unveiled on Melbourne s St Kilda Road. The Victorian farmer never returned home: he was killed at the second battle of Bullecourt on 12 May 1917, aged 40. His body was not found.

11 On the 18th August 2016 it will mark 50 years since the battle of Long Tan and 50 years since Australian and New entered the Phuoc tuy province. This resulted in seven years of continual operations in the province until the withdrawal in The above book should be available at most good book stores. 12 As I mentioned in my Say, my father was in the RAF in India during the Second World War. My father wrote a poem about his slouch hat. Just a bit of back information the slouch hats were Australian made and were supplied to the members of the RAF in India with the coloured bans of the red, white and blue on them. My father retained this hat for all these years and has given it to me for safe keeping. Anyway I hope you find the poem a good read. MY HAT" I ve never bought a hat the only one I ve ever owned was presented to me by a R.A.F. Officer in the 1940s with the announcement that I had earned a climate change after wrestling and suffering on a cold windy Lincolnshire aerodrome, doctoring HIS MAJESTIES precious Lancaster and Halifax bombers and keeping them flying until they crashed or were shot down. You L.A.C. Bambridge L892268, will now have the privilege of serving King and Country in the Jewel of the Empire 'lndla' and along with this comes a nice set of khaki uniforms and a beautiful hat to shade your face from the glorious everlasting sunshine, which you've been looking for. All this was said as if I had won first prize in some fabulous competition, what he did not tell me was about the sun blistering heat, the monsoons that rained for two months non stop, snakes, scorpions and cockies as big as mice. l and MY HAT Took it all in stride and we've been together now, from Bombay to the Cashmere hills UK and eventually back to AUSSIE. 7O years or more later that HAT is still protecting heads and still looks new. This my one and only quality HAT, made to fit the harshest of conditions was made to last----ln AUSTRALIA! Clif B There is also a photo of Dad s crew beside a bomber. Unfortunately the photo is not the best quality but my father is the one wearing the slouch hat just under the figure on the side of the bomber. The sign being held reads War ends in West. The other photo of my father is him sitting on the wing of a plane he is the skinny one not wearing a hat. The photo in my Say is my father in 2015 at the Anzac parade in Wollongong. I virtually had to nail the hat on his head. Cliff Jeep News No.175 August Page 12

13 Hi Mitch, My name is Phil Hampton, I am a member of the Bathurst Historic car club. At the last meeting the editor of our club magazine had a copy of your latest magazine, at which I was very interested. I have a 1943 Willys MB which is currently on H plates with the Bathurst club. I have attached some photos for your reference, as my jeep has a little bit of interesting history. I bought it from a guy who had inherited it from his uncle in the UK, who was a collector of military items. He sold of a lot of things, but kept the jeep and shipped it out to Australia, where it sat in his garage for 8 years unused. He told me that the vehicle was landed on Normandy, and that it was used in the film band of brothers of which I have some of the clothing used in the movie. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter and join WW11 Jeeps NSW, can you please let me know the cost. Looking to hearing from you soon, and keep up the good work with the magazine. Cheers Phil Hampton Thanks and welcome Phil. We thus have solved the mystery Jeep owner in the Bathurst ANZAC Day Parade, sent in by a friend of mine. It s amazing where this Newsletter ends up. Whether its over the hill at Bathurst or around the world, it does go far and wide. So to you Phil and all of you out there, don t be afraid to tell us your Jeep News and drop us a line from time to time. It s your stories that make it all interesting. Cheers! Another shot from Bathurst ANZAC Day Parade and Phil s proud Digger. Phils Jeep below, resplendent in the warm afternoon sun. A fine example of a Willys and as he say s with a colourful past!

17 JEEP BOOKS Here is the latest works from Lloyd White in the US. A few years back he completed a five volume set of the history of the Willys MB. At around $90 US each, they were up there in price, however he has since sold out, proving very popular. He has just recently completed a two book set for the Ford GPW and they too are selling fast. They are thicker than the White Pages. Eleven and a half pounds in weight for the two Serious! Full of original pictures, documentation and information. If you want a set, I can say they are an excellent work. Get hold of him fast if you are interested and if you like playing with your Willys, then let him know that too, as he might go into a reprint if there is enough interest. Lloyd White mbgpw20@gmail.com While we are on the subject of great Jeep Books. Over ten years ago, I was given a copy of this book by the author to review, which we did in the Jeep News No.89. It is an excellent publication and a wealth of information for any would be Jeep Restorer or those wishing to acquire more knowledge on how too. In Ren Bernier s interest, I sent the book to Neil at Marathon to review with the view of him putting it in his cattledog for new customers. A few months later, I followed up with a phone call and got the response What Book? Hopefully it might be located in his impending move (if that s still happening?), can t be missed if I put my usual Stolen from Mitch Holland in the inside front cover! But. if you want a copy of this, then I suggest you google it, check out his great website while you are there! And apologies Ren for the length of time to readvertise its availability. I was hoping for it being located and returned to me to read properly, as I can do with a better Jeep education! Serious. Always serious here!

20 The WAY WE WERE Last month, we introduced Colin and his GPA Car, well this month its all about Weddings! Firstly in my haste, I mentioned Wedding Car, but in correction to Don and Irene, they used their GPA as their Honeymoon Car. It was all they had. However Jan and Troy did! Don is a larger than life character around Mildura, who has appeared with his GPA at Corowa on one of my visits. He met us at Mildura upon our arrival Irene, had never been in the water in a GPA (despite having travelled many miles in one), until Bruce took her on a short cruise on the Murray not far from their home town of Merbein. Jeep News No.175 August Page 20

21 Jan and Troy s Wedding at Corowa After growing up in Southern Victoria and living in Sydney since 1986 planning a wedding was quite easy after deciding that it would coincide with one of the Corowa events. In 2016 the theme was Year of the Chrysler so I approached a couple of owners of Dodge Command Cars to use as Wedding vehicles. I spoke with Manfred Henkel at the steam rally at Menangle in May 2015 and I asked if I could come to my wedding in his GPA. Manfred was very positive and I mentioned that I would like this to be a surprise. On Sunday 13 th March I spotted that Manfred and his wife had arrived with his GPA. We had just done a recce and found a spot that would be ideal to launch the GPA. On Sunday afternoon we showed Manfred the launching spot. After checking out the access carefully it was decided that we would give it a trial. We went into the Murray and down to the bank near Ball Park Caravan Park. To be able to get out of the GPA it was either going to be via a ladder or by using the bank. A perfect spot was found and without having my wedding dress on I was able to say let me get off here. Most of the people attending the wedding were unaware of this happening and were expecting my arrival via a Dodge Command Car. After attending the Swim in since 1980, I was determined to have an entry that I and other people will remember. I had my bridesmaids and friends getting ready for the wedding at the Corowa Motor Inn (I can guarantee they have all the facilities you will require while staying at Corowa along with the most reasonable price). The wedding vehicles arrived and their ribbons were attached. To get into the GPA I used a chair from one of the rooms. Keith Webb had organised for a go pro to go on the front windscreen of the GPA. We launched into the Murray and knew it would be approximately 15 minutes before we arrived. The weather was a bit on the warm side but I am glad it wasn t 24 hours later when there was rain. The arrival at the lagoon was 15 minutes after departure. The only problem was a fuel problem just prior to arriving but Manfred was very positive that his GPA would arrive at the required time. We entered the small beach area and I was met by various AMVCS people who made sure I was able to get out of the GPA and walk up to where the ceremony was being held. Troy and Bruce McCann and Brian Cocker arrived in Neville Smiths s Bren Gun Carrier. They had to make sure a couple of spots where the grass had been lifted were covered over. My bridesmaids, Kirrilly Craft and Jenny Spring had arrived in Doug Bell s Command Car while my father arrived in Dave Mottram s Command Car. The day was truly memorable and I even had the reporters from the Corowa Free Press attend. At the end of the service after we had signed all the documents a large flock of cockatoos left Ball Park and the timing couldn t have been better. Champagne was served by the river and them we all proceeded to the Corowa RSL. We had a few photos taken near the War Memorial opposite the Corowa RSL with the Command Cars and Bren Gun Carrier present. The reception was in the Federation Room in the Corowa RSL and I would have to say it fitted in so well with the celebration. The room had been recently renovated so I could have it set up how I wanted. The band we organised was The Ray Macartney Duo and I had seen then the year before at the RSL club. They had recently released a song about WW1 so I was happy for them to sing it. If anyone has any photos please forward them to me. Jan Thompson-Creamer
