3 Member Profile Name: Satish I. Hiremath, DDS Title: Mayor Serves: Town of Oro Valley Served in this capacity since: First term in office began June 2, 2010 Professional Background: Dentist Civic Involvement: Mayor Hiremath has been involved in his community since moving to Oro Valley in Through his business, he has been the title sponsor for the Oro Valley Independence Day celebrations ( ); the Oro Valley Holiday Parade ( ), and he implemented a free dental exam and X-ray Back to School program in He has served as the past president of the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA, formerly GOVAC) and is a lifetime president emeritus for the organization. A father of four children, he has contributed time and resources to community organizations and programs including: the Children s Library, Coronado Little League, AYSO Soccer, Kids Closet, Project Graduation, Special Olympics, Youth Leadership of America, the Saguaro Rotary Foundation and the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce. Region s most pressing issue in your opinion: Working together to get the region back on its feet financially. We have quality schools, services and programs in southern Arizona and we need to stop waiting for someone to come along with the silver bullet to stimulate our economy. We need to market our strengths to attract and retain quality employment. We have the resources we just need to work together and put our message out there better. Region s best opportunity for economic success: For our community, it is the bioscience industries. We have been able to attract and retain some of the best research and development companies in the world and we believe that will continue. The addition of BASIS Oro Valley to our education system as well as the University of Arizona s recent purchase of research space on Oracle Road reinforces our strength in this arena. What do you like best about what is currently happening at the regional level? I support the RTA s desire to build a regional transit system that will allow our residents to reduce their dependency on the automobile and travel safely and efficiently to points in and around Oro Valley. We ve also been working with the Town of Marana and the City of Tucson on projects that will enhance our marketing efforts to attract both business and tourism to the region. If we re successful, everyone benefits in the form of increased sales tax revenue, higher quality jobs and visitors who support our local businesses. What s your No. 1 priority in your current role: Removing distractions and empowering the Town Manager and the employees to do their jobs. We have some of the finest employees in local government in Oro Valley we hear that from other municipalities around the state all the time. The best thing I can do as Mayor is to guide the policy at the highest level, and let the staff provide the quality service and expertise to our constituents. Setting the stage for arrival of electric vehicles later this year The media and others are all abuzz regarding the launch of electric vehicles not only in Tucson, but nationally, later this year. In July, Pima Association of Governments Clean Cities Manager Colleen Crowninshield participated on a panel at the Plug-In Vehicle and Infrastructure Community Readiness Workshop, held by the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. The workshop drew 150+ people in person and another 700+ online. The panel addressed planning, processing, financing and partnerships associated with the launch of electric vehicles. The DOE scheduled the workshop in response to President Obama s request to Secretary of Energy Steven Chu to provide technical assistance to cities deploying electric vehicles. Arizona, including the Tucson and Phoenix markets, is one of five launch states for the Nissan all-electric LEAF later this year. Tucson Regional Clean Cities is supporting this launch by helping to identify public infrastructure locations for approximately 200 electric vehicle charging units. In August 2009, the DOE awarded Tempe-based ECOtality with a $99.8 million grant to assist with infrastructure development in the five states, including Arizona, California, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington. 4 Jurisdiction Updates State Route 77 walls branded with Western history REGIONAL Outlook Sept 2010 Regional Outlook is produced by Pima Association of Governments (PAG) to promote sharing among PAG member jurisdictions and a greater understanding of regionally significant activities, resources and services. PAG invites submissions about items of interest. Please send your submissions to sstorm@ PAGnet.org. The Arizona Department of Transportation, primarily known for roads, recently embraced a different kind of brand: Ranch brands. This trademark of ranches was and is commonly used on livestock to show ownership. Travelers can see these symbols of area history and Western lore as they drive along the newly widened State Route 77 (Oracle Road) from Tangerine Road to Calle Concordia. Replicas of six livestock brands were adopted from a ledger kept by the pioneer rancher and founder of the historic Steam Pump Ranch, George Pusch. The metalwork designs accent the sound wall at the Cañada del Oro bridge and retaining walls along Tangerine Road and El Conquistador Way on Oracle Road. The ranch brands pay tribute to ranches that grazed the range that is now considered Oro Valley. Some brands were owned by ranchers who did business with George Pusch, who immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1867 and created the Steam Pump Ranch and a vast cattle business. One of the brands on the walls that resembles an upside down football field goal was owned by Henry Feldman, Mr. Pusch s brother-in-law. In later years, another record shows the Pusch Land and Cattle Company as the owner of that particular brand. Mr. Feldman operated the PZ-Feldman Ranch in the San Pedro Valley near the junction with Aravaipa Creek. The Pusch family reportedly grazed cattle in the entire area between the Steam Pump Ranch and the PZ-Feldman Ranch. The 7-6 brand on the walls was owned by W.O. Ramsey, from Tombstone. The JE brand was owned by J.C. Wilson and E. Ervine of Prescott. The designs on the wall were selected for their aesthetic appeal and represent brands used in the early 1900s. The original concept for artwork on the walls was to put up generic ranch brands. The idea was modified when the landscape contractor, SAGE Landscape Architecture, made a small group presentation to the Oro Valley Historical Commission. James D. Kriegh, a commission member, suggested that authentic ranch brands used in the area be the models. Mr. Kriegh researched brands, selections were made, and then he contacted brand owners to gain approval to reproduce the six designs. Mr. Kriegh passed away in October 2007 before the project was completed. Sources: Patricia Spoerl (Livestock Brands along Oracle Road in Oro Valley: History and Art on the Wall, March 2010). 5 Jurisdiction Updates New PAG Web site launched Pima Association of Governments launched a new Web site in August. Please take a look at org. PAG has a Facebook presence with three of its program areas: Sun Rideshare, Clean Cities and the stormwater outreach campaign. EPA delays setting ozone standards The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a slight delay of about two months to the end of October in finalizing its decision on new ozone standards and its schedule for designations. In its reconsideration of the ozone standards in January 2010, the EPA proposed setting ozone limits in line with the recommendations of its own Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee. Ground-level ozone affects both health and welfare; it is linked to health problems ranging from aggravation of asthma to decreased lung function, and can have harmful effects on sensitive vegetation and ecosystems. The Tucson region meets the current standards for ozone. However, depending on the exact health and welfare ozone limits selected by the EPA, the Tucson region will likely be designated nonattainment. Former Regional Council member, Marana matriarch leaves legacy Ora Mae Harn, who served on PAG s Regional Council from 1989 to May 2001, passed away on July 28. Ms. Harn, 77, was known as the Matriarch of Marana, where she founded the Marana Health Center, Marana Community Food Bank, the Marana Clothing Bank and the Marana Heritage Conservancy. Involved in the founding of Marana, she also served 16 years on the Marana Town Council through 2001, serving as the first and only woman mayor from 1989 through 1993 and from 1997 to Transportation officials conduct certification review Pima Association of Governments met with federal and state transportation officials on June as part of a federal certification review that is conducted every four years to review PAG s work activities. PAG staff provided updates of all of its transportation and related plans and programs, including public involvement. A formal report will be forthcoming. More details about the certification process may be found online at Watson named town manager Jerene Watson was named town manager for the Town of Oro Valley in July. She was serving as interim manager and has been the assistant town manager since She is the first woman town manager in Oro Valley s 36-year history. The Houghton Road and Old Vail Road/Mary Ann Cleveland Way intersection, which broke ground in June 2009, was the first construction start on a major City of Tucson corridor, funded under the voter-approved Regional Transportation Authority plan. Vehicles now cruise the intersection in any direction with the ease of six travel lanes, complete with exclusive right-turn lanes and dual left-turn lanes. Upgraded traffic signals efficiently move vehicles across the new rubberized asphalt. We would like to thank the entire team for a job well done, said City of Tucson Project Manager Jesse Gutierrez. This sentiment was seconded by Borderland Construction Project Manager, Randy Davis, who attributed the project s success to exceptional teamwork. The newly reconstructed intersection is ready to accommodate the remainder of the Houghton Road widening, from Tanque Verde Road to Interstate 10, making way for the next Houghton Road Corridor project planned to start construction the stretch of Houghton Road from Irvington Road to Valencia Road. For more information on Houghton Road Corridor projects, contact: M.J. Dillard, City of Tucson Project Manager Phone: (520) mj.dillard@tucsonaz.gov or Melissa Benton, Community Relations Phone: (520) melissa@gordleydesign.com New interchange nears completion The Twin Peaks interchange is getting closer to completion with a ribbon-cutting celebration set for the week before Thanksgiving. The $81 million project is one of 35 roadway corridor projects in the RTA plan and is funded by the RTA, the Town of Marana, the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highways Administration. The Twin Peaks interchange will connect with Camino de Manana, a new roadway that also is among the 35 roadway projects.
