Chapter Directors 2018 Chapter Couple of the Year Mike Melton & Anne Sheets P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC The hurricane came and went, and delivered more of a punch to our Myrtle Beach friends than any of us. Some of our northern neighbors are still dealing with the high waters, so please keep them in your prayers. I did not hear of anyone in the Low Country with significant damage, but if anyone needs assistance, please let me know and I ll be there to help. The month of September was a busy month. It started off with Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville, TN. South Carolina s Chapter G was well represented at this year s Wing Ding. I counted 19 members that I know where there, and that was a very good turnout. There were times it was so hot and muggy I could have swore I was back home in the Low Country. Fortunately the only class affected by the weather was the Friday class, when it poured on us and chilled everything down. To my knowledge, of those who went, all arrived back home safely, a successful end to a fabulous adventure. Of course, the big news for those of you who may not have already heard, Wing Ding 41 will be in Nashville, TN next year. GWRRA must have some kind of connection with the Tennessee folks. Stay tuned for more info. This month we slipped our Chapter Gathering, because our normal meeting time conflicted with Wing Ding. We met on the second Saturday at Logan s Roadhouse in Summerville and had about 26 folks in attendance. The Educational Seminar on Stress before the Gathering was also well attended, and we all learned a few things that could improve our lives. Our September 15th ride was cancelled/delayed our of respect for a little wind storm called Florence. We figured most folks didn t want to take a chance of hang gliding all the way to Columbia. Florence also put the kibosh on our September 13th Meet to Eat when it became too difficult to find an open restaurant. It was probably for the best, as some of our folks may have listened to our governor and actually evacuated, some right into the path of the storm. Turns out this was one of the few times when it was safe to escape south to Disney or Sea World, as the Florence was very unlikely to wander that far south. We are still planning to ride to Maggie Valley for the Fall Mountain Trip, September I m currently waiting on a report from on the road conditions, but I expect most everything will be cleaned up before we depart, except maybe some of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Don t forget the ride next month to Augusta, GA on October There are a lot of things to do in the area. You are welcome to read all about it on page 8. We have several events scheduled in October, so be sure to check out our calendar starting on page 11, and keep up with any changes on our online calendar at calendar/index.html Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful, Mike Melton From your Chapter Directors 2

From your Chapter Director (Continued) SC Chapter G Celebrity Search Well folks, we have a celebrity among our chapter members. Each month, in the Wing World Magazine, there is the search for Wingy, in what is called the Where Is Wingy Contest. Well, for the September Wing World, one of our own found Wingy, and managed to be the first to the results to GWRRA. For their submission, they wrote: "Wingy" is on the left row, 3rd picture from the top, sitting on the seat of the yellow Gold Wing in front of the black and white cat. And guess what he was correct and first. And the winner is none other than our very own Dave Dence. Dave has submitted answers many times, but his first time winning. So everyone take a moment and congratulate Dave on his $50 finders fee he ll be getting from GWRRA. Pictures from Wing Ding Here are a few pictures from Wing Ding, including the round musical Hot Potato we played. John and Karen Higgins of Chapter A surprised me with Spud at the start of Chapter Director s Forum, and I passed him on to John and Cindy Wood of Chapter P within the hour. The Goodie Shop Get your new key ring for your bike. Cloth so it won t scratch your chrome or paint. $1.50 3

Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant George Gloria acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org The Power of the Wave One of the first words we learn as a baby is HELLO, which is one of the most powerful and rewarding words. It is definitely better than saying goodbye. Saying HELLO to someone when you first meet them immediately puts them at ease and you start a conversation on a most friendly word. What does saying HELLO have to do with riding motorcycles and riding them safely? Well, let s look at this just a little deeper. First, let s agree that a FRIENDLY WAVE is the same thing as saying HELLO. It seems to me one of the first things we learn when we start riding with GWRRA, next to food and ice cream, is that the members are one of the most FUN loving, patriotic, hugging and WAVING group you will ever know. When out riding, a friendly WAVE to other motorcycles is letting them know we both enjoy the same thing. When we extend a friendly WAVE to other road users, including pedestrians, it makes them notice us. That s exactly what we want, to SEE and be SEEN. It also lets the recipients of our WAVE know that we are a friendly group and enjoy people. A WAVE to a child is worth gold. They will notice, wave back and tell their parents so now the adults are aware of our presence. We have been SEEN. Oh, nuts, that person didn t WAVE back so I m not going to WAVE anymore. NO NO NO keep WAVING as not only do you want the person to whom you WAVED to notice but also the tons of other observers out there as once again we want to be SEEN. Friendliness is so rare nowadays; it s disarming, so use the WAVE to let people know that we are FRIENDS out having FUN. Respect begets respect and a WAVE will help you start a lot of conversations on your outing. You never know, you may meet the same person you just WAVED to at your next stop. The simple WAVE can be our first step on being noticed on the roadways. Join us and start WAVING even more than you do now. Not only will you see a lot of people smiling at you, the WAVE will put you and your co-rider in a very happy frame of mind. Just try it, you might like it. (Credit to Joe and Judy Pirillo, Iowa Senior District Educators) Use the Power.WAVE! Submitted by George and Gloria Servant 4

District Rider Educator Rich Kitco 6 Ernie Court Irmo, SC Capn_rich_1@yahoo.com Check Your Levels Several members have come to me and asked me What the status or their Levels is. Can I apply for Level IV?, Can I become a Senior Master?, When do I expire?, When did I take that seminar? or one of many other Rider Education questions. The answer is It is all contained in the database, a good reason to sign up for the Levels Program, if only to keep track of your seminars and training. Check your GWRRA Rider Ed levels. It is fun, easy and informative. As long as you are in the Levels program, current or expired, you can see your information. Since the Chapter Educators are going away as officers, the only ones with Rider Ed Database access will be District Educators. BUT, members can still check their own status. Go to GWRRA website, click on Officers then on Rider Education. A menu appears on left side, go to My R.E. Information. Click here and a log in box appears. Use the I need help logging in for instructions. All that is needed is your member number and address. You will be able to see all the classes and seminars regarding Rider ED that you have attended, as well as Levels status. Check it out, if only for the FUN of it!. Richard Kitko, SC District Rider Educator 5

Last year, Chapter G made a $400 donation to One80 Place in Charleston to benefit homeless Veterans. We raised the funds with a Scavenger Hunt Ride and a Mystery Ride, both of which enjoyed good participation. We have decided to support this very worthwhile charity again this year. Our goal for 2018 is to raise at least $500. Listed below are several fun ways you can participate in supporting this effort: 1. Members are asked to bring new and unused items you would like to donate to our Chapter Gatherings. Gloria Servant and Anita Fender will be collecting your items at our next two Chapter Gatherings. These will be used to make baskets, which will be raffled off at our October Gathering. All proceeds will go to One80 Place. 2. We will also be selling raffle tickets for three beautiful quilts. Three separate drawings will be held at the Chapter Christmas Party on December 2nd. All funds go to One80 Place. 38x50 Red, White & Blue Lap Quilt 68x68 Patriotic Themed Quilt 32x32 Wall Hanging/ Doll Quilt 4. And our final way, by request. If you just want to donate some money and need a receipt for tax purposes, you are welcome to write out a check to One80 Place and give it to Gloria or Anita and you will be provided with a receipt. Your generous donation will be added to the funds we have collected and presented to One80 Place after the Christmas Party. We thank you in advance for all you can do! 9

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy. Just put yourself in my hands for one year" said the shrink. "Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears. How much do you charge? Eighty dollars per visit, replied the doctor. I'll sleep on it, I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street. Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having? he asked. Well, eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12, A bartender cured me for $ I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck. Is that so? With a bit of an attitude he said, And how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you? He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain't nobody under there now. It's always better to get a second opinion. 10
