Chapter Director P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC Several of us use Garmin GPS devices to get around on trips. I know I use mine fairly often to plan rides and get around places I m not familiar with. I also switched from Garmin s MapSource to their BaseCamp program, at the recommendation of Garmin, for planning routes over a year ago. Although it was a little difficult getting used to it, I finally began to master the computer software and have been pretty successful planning most of my trips. Now, as I recollect, I did have a small issue with a route I planned for the Spring Mountain trip, that eventually took us on a dirt road, even though I had told BaseCamp and my Garmin GPS to avoid dirt roads. But sometimes, it happens, right? Well, I was reading an article in the June Wing World, under the Throttle Members Only section called Changing Routes; My navigation software ordeal by Alan Dyke. In the article, he writes about his BaseCamp route ordeal, which brought back memories. In his article, his route just failed miserably. Although I ve had better luck with mine, I continued to read on. He writes about how he contacted Garmin Customer Service after he kept getting errors. The reply from them was a huge surprise to him and me, so here is what he was told. According to Garmin Customer Service, the Zumo 400 series, 500, 550, 660 and 665 are no longer compatible with routing in BaseCamp. Their suggestion was to return to MapSource for custom routes and managing data from the Zumo series GPS. (For reference you can go to this link, and see the subnote 2 at the bottom of the page, which only says it is incompatible with the Zumo 600 and 605 series: support.garmin.com/support/searchsupport/case.faces?caseid={ b3-11dc-4ec } Now, upon my own investigation, I also found a BaseCamp Legacy, version dated December 12, 2013 which specifically says it works with the Zumo series, and then I found the MapSource, version dated Oct 25, But, I ve had difficulty finding anything on the Garmin site saying what products the BaseCamp IS compatible with. I have recently sent a request to Garmin Customer Support requesting more details. As of the writing of this article, I still do not have an answer, but I can assure you, I will pass along what I do learn, as soon as I hear of their options. In the mean time, what do we do. Well, I m going to experiment with the BaseCamp Legacy version or MapSource, to see if I can get them to work. But hopefully, Garmin will get back with me soon. And another issue I m not sure of. Is BaseCamp compatible with the Honda onboard Navigation program? Another question to pose to Garmin, of which I hope to remember. Any of you are welcome to send in your experiences and I ll be glad to share them with the rest of the chapter. I know articles like this is what I would like to see in future newsletters for our members. Everyone can benefit from others experiences, and this is a great forum to share info. And speaking of other sharings, next month I m working on a subject called Ghost Shifting, which has affected one of our members very personally. Who knows, maybe I can get them to submit an article, or at least share with me the details so I can put it together. But it is something I think most of you will find interesting. So, until next time, ride safe and often, 2

Assistant Chapter Director MJ & John LeBlanc MJ John acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org The Biker s Guide to Business We d rather ride our motorcycles thinking about business than sit in a conference room thinking about our motorcycles. Amen! Several years ago I stumbled upon a book entitled The Bikers Guide to Business: When Business and Life Meet At The Crossroads authored by Dwain DeVille. The title caught my attention from two reasons: (1) my love of motorcycle riding and (2) my experience working in the business world for over three decades. The inside cover of his book states, What do business people and entrepreneurs have in common with bikers? More than you think. Dwain s book is based upon a series of principles that he uses to guide business leaders through difficult times and onto success. His audience is primarily small business entrepreneurs. He creates the connection of the open road with that of the entrepreneurial spirit the spirit to set one s own course and to succeed in their own way on their own terms. In his course Retreat on Wheels, business leaders achieve this breakthrough thinking while riding through dazzling countryside. Accomplished bikers continuously work on their riding skills because they know that the road ahead is ever-changing. Weather conditions, traffic and other factors beyond their control challenge them each and every time they hit the road, and it s the same in business. His journey isn t just about or for bikers; it s an intriguing story of his lessons learned by a biker successfully navigating through the crossroads of business and life that thousands of other entrepreneurs reach each and every day. And like any road trip, it begins by lifting the kickstand and shifting gears. So if you want a good read saddle up and give it a ride or just check our his website at bikersguidetobusiness.com MJ & John LeBlanc 3

Assistant Chapter Director Melvin & Bertie Painther 224 Waterfront Park Dr., Summerville, SC acd-2@gwrra-sc-g.org Well, it has sure been a hot month. The "Green Machine' says it's too hot to get out and play. I convinced "Him" it was hotter in than out, so we are trying to make some effort to get out. We had a great ride after our June Chapter Gathering. We made a trip up to Swan Lake, in Sumter, SC. It was a great ride up. Swan Lake was so beautiful and peaceful. Some of us just enjoyed sitting and watching the swans, while some walked around and took pictures or explored the area. Karen picked a great place to ride to. We are looking forward to going back when it's cooler to walk some of the trails. We had five bikes and seven riders make the ride up. We were joined by a visitor to our chapter, Stephen Grant, and we hope he visits us again. We 8 hard workers for Kathy's craft night. We needed a lot of muscle and whole bunch of suggestions; but our Pirates Chest turned out great. We had it on display during our Frogmore and we hope everyone saw it. It is definitely a work of art. We would post a picture, but it would give away our ideas to the other chapters, so come on out to the next Chapter Gathering on July 4th and get a glimpse at it. It sure looked like the Frogmore was a big success. The food was great. We want to compliment our host, Guy Lamb, for the great job he did. We hope next year goes just as well. The Rider Education classes were great and very informative. Our CD did his usual great job, we're so lucky to have him as a leader and trainer. A few brave souls made the trip to the Palmetto Motorcycle Skills competition. It was very hot but great to watch. Melvin took our Granddaughter with him. It was her first Honda ride. She thought it was awesome and so quiet. Her parents ride Harleys. She'll make another trip down later in the summer, to see the carriages, downtown Charleston. We had a great turnout for the "Plaque Attack". We even got some friends from NC-G to join us. It'll be so great for Chapter G to take the plaque to the rally. Thanks to everyone for their support our effort. Your ACD's Melvin & Bertie Painther 4

Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC SAFETY Asst. Chapter Educator P.O. Box North Charleston, SC Again not sure what to write about, so I will start with this. We had our Frog Moore Stew and two Rider Ed classes this month. Everything went very well but I was a little disturbed that not many of our chapter members came other than the Chapter Staff and some of the regulars. We try to do things to get the whole chapter involved, but the things we plan just doesn t seem to get the folks that make this chapter THE G FORCE involved. What do we have to do to get the word out? What do you want to do? We plan these things so that everyone, not just a few of us, can take advantage of them. The heart of GWRRA is safety education, and that is done through the Rider Education Program. Rider Education is important to everyone and could mean the difference to everyone that rides a motorcycle. The classes we offered at the Frogmore were discussing Helmet Myths and Team Riding. Something that affects every rider, not just GWRRA members. But information that everyone of our members could find helpful and useful. There are new guidelines out there about helmets and all of that was covered. The Team Riding brought about some interesting conversations and many people learning what makes a good and safer team ride. It also gave them a chance to talk about some bad habits many of us have, and why they are bad. I hope we can schedule more of this training in the future and that more of our members will take advantage of it. We all gain from the knowledge, and discussing how to ride safely. On another note, if you are not signed up for GWRRA Level 1 please do so the next time you are at a gathering. I will be happy to fill out the form and send it in, and it doesn t cost you anything. And, remember we have two Meet to Eats scheduled every month at various places around the tri-counties, so please try to come out for them as we always have a great time. And if you have a place you would like to suggest, that can accommodate about people, then pass that along also. That is why we have the team address, to communicate stuff like that. So send those ideas to our team at g-team@gwrra-sc-g.org or to our Chapter Director at director@gwrra-sc-g.org. The weather has been very hot the last couple weeks and I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to ride, at least when it was cooler in the day. Remember to keep yourself hydrated, especially while you are riding. Ride Safe, Craig Miller 5

Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) Karen Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Craig and I had the opportunity to travel to Maggie Valley, NC for a great weekend of riding with some fellow Gold Wing riders from all around the country. We rode through some beautiful mountain scenery and ended each day by gathering for dinner and enjoying each other s company. It was a wonderful gathering of folks who left as friends when we returned to our homes. On the very first day, as we gathered together to head out on our ride, we were suddenly aware of the sound of emergency response vehicles. We left for our ride and forgot all about those emergency response vehicles and where they might be going. When we returned, however, we learned that a rider and his wife, not part of our group, had been struck by a vehicle coming out of a parking lot of a business. Neither one survived the accident. Needless to say, all of us were deeply saddened to hear that sad news. I wondered how could that happen. It was a main road with plenty of traffic. The fact is, it does, and way too often. The only facts I know are the motorcyclist had the right-of-way and the motorist failed to yield. Possibly he didn t see the motorcyclist because he was only looking for cars. Perhaps he didn t see the motorcyclist because he was hidden behind a larger vehicle. The point is he DIDN T see the motorcyclist, and the motorcyclist s life was snuffed out just that quick. So what can WE do to keep this tragedy from happening to us? The goal of the Motorist Awareness Program in GWRRA is to educate the motoring public about the motorcycling public. Unfortunately, as much as we would like to, we will never be able to reach every single driver on the road. The only other option is for US to be prepared for the uneducated driver. We need to assume they don t see us and be prepared to respond appropriately. We need to make ourselves as visible as possible to the 6 motoring public. It is helpful if the co-rider is truly a co-rider and actively participates in safe riding. We need to communicate to drivers what our intentions are changing lanes, turning, slowing down, etc. I wear gloves with reflective symbols that I use to help communicate what Craig is intending to do. If I know he wants to make a lane change, I try to make eye contact with the driver and communicate the lane change. We wear a bright vest with reflective piping to make ourselves more visible. Even with all of that, we still assume we are invisible to drivers and ride defensively. Group riding may make you more visible, but there are still drivers out there who will try to bully their way into your midst, usually at the last minute because they need to turn off NOW! I saw that happen several times on our trip to the mountains of Southern Virginia. Bully tactics are a huge hazard to the motorcycling public. Defensive riding and identifying an escape from a dangerous situation is our only protection. So while we try to educate the motoring public to encourage them to share the road responsibly, there will always be drivers who will disregard our safety for their own agendas. To be safe, WE need to make sure our riding skills are at their peak. To do that, GWRRA offers rider courses and seminars to educate us. I encourage all of you to take advantage of them whenever they are offered. They are offered so that you can ride equipped with all the knowledge and skill possible to make sure your ride is safe and you return home to your family in one piece. So Ride alert and ride conspicuously. BE THE EXAMPLE. Karen Miller
