Twenty-four members went to the Round Barn for a tour. It s an interesting place. We were joined by two more members for lunch at Cerno's for a total of 26. We had great food. I wouldn't mind going back there again. We lost six members after lunch (had somewhere else to go), and then we had 20 for the tour of the Woodland Palace in Francis Park. The house was small, and the air conditioning was not working so needless to say, it was HOT in the house. But we had diehards that took the full tour anyway. The tours took longer than was expected so after the tour of Woodland Palace, we decided to call it a day but not before we found a DQ in Kewanee. It was a wonderful day with good weather and good friends. Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, is our overnighter to Rockford, IL. We are leaving Galesburg at 8:00 and Galva at 8:30. We will be staying at the Quality Inn & Suites in Loves Park, IL. July 19 is our Coffee at the Windmill Restaurant in East Moline, and then Whitey's Ice Cream afterwards. There is no Julliettes scheduled for July. July 21, 22, and 23 is the Illinois District Rally in Pontiac, IL. We are looking forward to this rally. It is always a fun rally. On July 31, we have a lunch ride to Johnny B's in Wapello, IA. Check for departure times and meeting place in the newsletter calendar. August is another full month starting with the meeting on the 2nd. Chapter Z's Ride is on Saturday, August 6 leaving Galesburg at 10:00. August 13 is our picnic at Streichers, and August 14 is Chapter R's Surprise Run in LaSalle, IL followed by the Ice Cream Social at the church in Kewanee. Coffee is at Boon Docks in Joy on August 16 at 5:30 p.m. There is no Julliettes scheduled for August. Then comes Wing Ding. Please note that there is NO MEETING scheduled for September due to Wing Ding. September 15 is Julliettes at P L Johnson's in Bishop Hill. September 20 is our coffee at Genesio's in Woodhull, and our October meeting is on October 4. Again, please note that there is NO MEETING in September and no Julliettes in July or August!!! Ride Safe and Have Fun Nita & Larry Gasaway, Chapter Directors H2

2 GWRRA IL Chapter H-2 July 2016 Page 2 Assistant Directors Message Carolyn & Lanny Anderson June was a busy month for us. After returning from our Branson trip we had three days to prepare for a trip to California by air to attend our older granddaughter Isabel s 8 th grade graduation. We arrived at the Moline airport in plenty of time for our departure only to find out there was a delay because the Minneapolis airport was closed because of storms. Needless to say, I was a little nervous because we had only an hour between connecting flights. By the time we reached Minneapolis, we had about 30 minutes to get to our gate on the other side of the airport. The flight attendant gave us information on getting a cart so we managed to get to our gate in about 15 minutes only to find out that our flight had been delayed. The flight out was uneventful, and we arrived on time at the San Francisco airport. After being picked up by son Frank, we arrived at our destination Mill Valley. I must tell you about Isabel s graduation. Isabel goes to a private school in Mill Valley that has very small classes 10 in her class. When we arrived at graduation, we were handed a program that contained a thank you from each of the graduates to the important people who helped them get to that day. In addition, each of the graduates gave a speech. After the speeches were over, the graduates disappeared off stage wondered what was going on! When they reappeared, each one was carrying a violin and proceeded to play for the crowd. The graduation exercise was 2 hours and afterwards there was a buffet reception in the courtyard. What an experience! On our trip back to Illinois, we, again, experienced a delay. We landed in Sioux Falls, SD, because Minneapolis was closed due to storms. This time we sat in the plane for around an hour and a half. We thought we had plenty of time (2 ½ hours between flights), but because of the delay we had 45 minutes to catch our next flight. This time we were lucky that our gate was only a few gates away from where we deplaned. Just so you know we had a VERY exciting adventure! Because of our California trip we missed the Roger ride; however, eight of our members attended. In addition we couldn t attend Johnnie s Ride but understand it was a great ride as usual. Fourteen of our members joined Johnnie and IA-O that day. We always look forward to that ride. Johnnie does such a great job planning it! The Julliettes met on June 16 at Boon Docks in Joy. Among other things that were discussed was H-2 s overnight trip to the Rockford area scheduled for July Eighteen people attended our June 21 coffee in Woodhull at Genesio s. Weather was perfect for riding so most of us rode our bikes. We took our Stallion, but it s still for sale if anyone knows of someone who wants a fun ride. Coffee locations vary from month to month, but it s usually on the 3 rd Tuesday of the month at 5:30. Our next coffee is at the Windmill in Moline with a stop at Whitey s for ice cream afterwards. Seven of us (Nita, Larry, Brenda, Bob, Larry H., and Lanny and I) attended the Region E Rally in Cedar Rapids, IA, June Lanny was the big winner in our group winning $100 in the 50/50 drawing Friday night and winning a door prize in the Saturday night drawing. It was a good rally with some interesting seminars. We missed the ride to Bonaparte, IA, on July 3, but 14 braved the weather most 4-wheeled it. Nita and Larry were the only bike riders. It was pouring down rain in Galesburg when our group left but not much rain in Muscatine. Lanny spent July 3 helping our church set up their food booth at Francis Park for the next day. By 7:15 a.m. on July 4 we were at the church helping load supplies, drinks, and food into trucks and vans to be taken to the park. Once there we spent the day helping in the booth. While serving sandwiches we had a surprise visit from Mary and Bob Adams and Sandy and Dave Ginger. They were on the MAD ride getting their picture taken at the Woodland Palace. They d already been to the Round Barn and were going to Bishop Hill to see the Colony Church and possibly to Galesburg to see the goat if there was time. On this past Tuesday, July 5, there were 32 people attending our monthly meeting including Mary Anne and Jerry Johnson our Arizona members and George Wanamaker who found us at our new location. There are 22 of us going on our July 9 MAD ride to the Round Barn for a tour, to Cerno s in Kewanee for lunch, and to Woodland Palace for a tour. Afterwards, the group is going to Hooppole and possibly Bishop Hill. The weather forecast sounds good so should be a great day for a ride. Those of you who are going on the weekend ride July 16 and 17 be sure to get your motel reservations made. Unfortunately, we are going to miss that ride because we ll be in Chicago. (continued on page 3)

3 GWRRA IL Chapter H-2 July 2016 Page 3 We are looking forward to the Illinois District Rally on July 21, 22, and 23. There are at least 4 couples going for the 3 days and others may join us for a day. A good time will be had, and we might catch a couple of MAD sites while in Pontiac. Don t forget the dinner ride to Johnnie B s in Wapello scheduled for July 31 and our meeting on August 2. We meet the first Tuesday of every month dinner at 6 and meeting at 7. Come join us at the Sirloin Stockade in Galesburg. In the meantime, check the Newsletter for upcoming dates and keep riding in between the rain drops. Until next time, BE SAFE Carolyn and Lanny Assistant Directors H-2 Coffee on June 21 at Genesio s in Woodhull Join us on Facebook. A FB group has been created as an additional way for H-2 members and friends of H-2 to communicate. The name of the group is GWRRA Illinois H-2 Highway Wingers.

4 GWRRA IL Chapter H-2 July 2016 Page 4 Region E Directors Bob & Nicki Fowkes Rider Education IL District Director Mary Adams By Butch Thron Happy July. Now that we are in the riding mode, here are a few of the things we need to think about before and during a ride. There s nothing much better than spending time with our Gold Wing family enjoying a day or a few days riding and exploring new places and things. Whatever you ride be safe and lookout for the other guy. Butch Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time. Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night. Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle. Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have. Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. If a motorist doesn t see you, don t be afraid to use your horn. Dress for safety: Wear a quality helmet and eye protection. Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing. Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. Remember the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear. Apply effective mental strategies: Constantly search the road for changing conditions. Use MSF s Search, Evaluate, Execute strategy (SEESM) to increase time and space safety margins. Give yourself space and time to respond to other motorists actions. Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible. Watch for turning vehicles. Signal your next move in advance. Avoid weaving between lanes. Pretend you re invisible, and ride extra defensively. Know and follow the rules of the road, and stick to the speed limit. Know your bike and how to use it: Practice. Develop your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces. Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don t see motorcycles.
