4 Countryside Derbyshire is a rambler's paradise with Britain s first National Park, the Peak District, right on the doorstep, but the Peak District isn t the whole story. Take a walk round Linacre Reservoirs through woodland carpeted with bluebells, or Walk on the Wildside' through the Moss Valley. Wander around sleepy villages like Old Brampton where time really does pass slowly as the church clock counts 63 minutes to the hour. Stroll through Ault Hucknall, final resting place of the philosopher Thomas Hobbes, then set off from Millthorpe to tackle the Cordwell Valley. Whether you're a veteran hiker looking for a challenge, a part time walker in search of a short stroll or an avid biker looking for traffic free cycling, there's a route here that's well, just up your street! Trails Chesterfield Town Centre Audio Trail Discover fascinating places of interest and find out more about Chesterfield s history. Download from (click the button on the home page) Hire free of charge (subject to security deposit) from Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre (Tel: /8, tourism@chesterfield.gov.uk). 1½ hours walking, can be shortened or extended to suit Village Audio Trails There are trails around 10 towns and villages in the Derbyshire countryside around Chesterfield, including the pretty village of Ashover, Clay Cross, Holymoorside and Holmesfield. For a full list visit the website and download them before you come. Bolsover Audio Trail This trail around Bolsover town takes you on a historical Blue Plaque trail and highlights the historical built environment. The trail takes about 1¼ hours. Download from (click the button on the home page). Well Dressing This ancient custom can only be found in Derbyshire and the Peak District and may date back to the Celts, or even earlier. At its simplest, it s the art of making pictures using only natural materials. Dressings are set in huge wooden trays, filled with wet clay. First, the outline of the picture is transferred from the paper to the clay. In Heath they use black wool, in Chesterfield and Cutthorpe they use small pieces of wood (called barking ). The next stage is to colour in the picture. Some villages call this petalling, but in Barlow it's called flowering because they use whole flower heads rather than individual petals. Built by Bess of Hardwick in the 1590s and unaltered since. Admire the rich tapestries, famous throughout Europe and call in at the new visitor facilities in the Stableyard. 6 Renishaw Hall and Gardens Renishaw Park, Renishaw, Sheffield. S21 3WB Tel: Website: The Gardens are Italian in design and were laid out over 100 years ago by the eccentric Sir George Sitwell. The Stable Block houses the Sitwell Museum where you can get a fascinating insight into the famous Sitwell writers - Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell. Attractions - Museums Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre Chesterfield Museum & Art Gallery Campbell Drive, Barrow Hill, S43 2PR Tel: Website: Britain's last surviving working Roundhouse an enthralling and atmospheric place, especially when galas, events and even a Rail Ale Festival take place in the unique surroundings. The Centre houses one of the largest collections of diesel, electric and, of course, steam locomotives in the country. This year the Roundhouse welcomes the Brighton Belle unit on 30 March. St Mary s Gate, S41 7TD Tel: Website: The Museum tells Chesterfield s story, from its beginnings as a Roman fort to the building of the 'Crooked Spire' Church, its growth as a market town and the arrival of the railways, to the present day. It houses the original builders wheel that was used in the construction of the Parish Church. The Museum has a small Art Gallery and a programme of events. Attractions - Family Chesterfield Canal Tapton Lock Visitor Centre, Lockoford Lane, S41 7JB Tel: Website: Surveyed by James Brindley the Canal opened in Derbyshire County Council and the Chesterfield Canal Trust are working to restore the Canal and have recently opened a new centre at Hollingwood and the Staveley Town Basin. The John Varley narrowboat operates regular trips from Tapton Lock Visitor Centre, which offers refreshments and sells gifts, books, maps and walking leaflets. S80 3LH Tel: Website: Creswell Crags was among the most northerly places on earth to be visited by our ancient ancestors. It is one of Britain s most important archaeological sites. The cave art discoveries underline the site s international significance. The Crags includes a Museum, Education Centre and new sensory play area (opening 22 March 2013), as well as the unique landscape of the gorge. 8 Crooked Spire St Mary & All Saints Church, Church Way, S40 1XJ Tel: Website: The Church of St Mary and All Saints was built in the late 13th Century and is the largest church in Derbyshire. Its famous Spire stands 228 feet high and leans 9 feet 5 inches from its true centre. Legends surround it but the truth is harder to find. Take a trip to the top of the Tower to find out more.
