1 SPEND YOUR SUMMER DAYS IN CAMBRIDGE WITH PARK & RIDE GREAT DAYS OUT IDEAS Inside this booklet you will find hints, tips and suggestions for great days out in Cambridge and, Park & Ride is the perfect way to get you there. Choose from 5 different Park & Ride sites and pay only 1 to park all day. Adult return fares are 3 and up to 3 children travel free with every ticket purchased. Check out the colouring competition on the back get your little ones to design a bus and drop entries at any Park & Ride site or at the Visitor Information Centre on Peas Hill. The winners in each category will receive 50 to spend at their favourite shop for more details turn to page 7. Cambridge is the perfect destination for a day out with the children you can visit one of our great parks and open spaces (see page 2), be fascinated at one of the amazing museums (see page 4) or explore the City Centre sights (see page 6). Whilst you enjoy your day out keep the children busy seeing if they can spot the difference between our two buses on page 3 or by completing our word search on page 5. PARKS AND OPEN SPACES Cambridge is blessed with some beautiful parks and open spaces right in the heart of the city that children will have great fun exploring.

2 PARKS AND OPEN SPACES Cambridge is blessed with some beautiful parks and open spaces right in the heart of the city that children will have great fun exploring. Pack up a picnic or pick up some delicious treats in the City and head down to one of the parks and open spaces. A round up of some of our favourites are below but for a full list please visit or Lammas Land here you will find a large play area which is great for families just a short walk from the city centre. There is also a kiosk selling ice-creams and refreshments and plenty of space for a picnic. Offering free table tennis and a nearby recently refurbished hard surface tennis court you can enjoy an action-packed day. Toilet facilities are available and if the weather allows you might like to pack your swimsuits as the Lammas Land paddling pool and nearby Sheep s Green learner pool are both free to use (opening times for the pools do vary so please check online before arriving). For more information about this area please visit: Jesus Green here you can enjoy a walk along the river watching the punts and boats and you will find a play area which caters for children of all ages. There are also a few free to use tennis courts including grass courts (subject to availability). A kiosk sells ice cream and refreshments and there is plenty of space for a picnic. Next to the kiosk is a stop off point for a passenger boat where you can experience a trip along the river Cam to Fen Ditton. If you fancy a swim why not try the outdoor pool on Jesus Green it s one of the longest outdoor lidos in the country and open May September. Adult non-members cost just 4.60 and juniors For a full price list, opening times and further information please visit Christ s Pieces very centrally located near to where the Park & Ride buses drop you in the City Centre, Christ s Pieces has a play park for young children and free tennis courts that you can just turn up and play on (subject to availability). In addition, you can also fit in a game of table tennis thanks to Ping! Cambridge who have installed a table tennis table on Christ s Pieces ready for you to use free of charge. 3 Cambridge University Botanic Garden spend your day in the Cambridge University Botanic Garden where you can discover plants from all over the world and fun trails for children in 40 acres of beautiful gardens and glasshouses. Located about 10 minutes walk from the city centre, with two entrances the Brookside Gate is located at the corner of Trumpington Road and Bateman Street and the Station Road Gate is located behind the war memorial at the junction of Hills Road and Station Road. If you are coming in on Trumpington Park & Ride then there is a stop very close to the Brookside Gate entrance. The Botanic Garden is open daily from 10am and a standard adult ticket is 5.50, concession 4.95 and children under 16 are free (but must be accompanied by an adult at all times). 4 MUSEUMS This summer, you can enjoy the Summer at the Museums programme thanks to the University of Cambridge Museums. Bringing together numerous venues across the County they have a jam-packed programme of dropin and bookable creative activities, events and trails. Pick up their free What s On guide from any participating museum or collection, or download your own from Some family friendly museum highlights are listed below to get you started: Fitzwilliam Museum located on Trumpington Street and a great place to explore with children. Entry is free and you will see everything from Egyptian coffins to Impressionist & 20th century masterpieces; illuminated manuscripts to Renaissance sculpture; rare coins and medals to Asian Art. Try searching for colours, faces, crowns, or animals; choose a culture to explore (ancient Egypt, medieval knights). Not sure where to start? Pick up a trail or Fitz kit at the Information desk and search for objects by theme. Open Tuesday Saturday 10am 5pm and Sundays and Bank Holidays 12pm 5pm. For more family events and self-guided activities visit Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences Head off on a dinosaur hunt at the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences on Downing Street. The museum offers 9 different activity boxes for children to use within the gallery (available from the shop) and encourages you to try and find all the dinosaurs they have in the Museum. Open Monday to Friday between 10am 1pm and then 2pm 5pm and on Saturday between 10am 4pm. For more information about the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences please visit The Polar Museum where you can discover the story of planet Earth s coldest, driest, windiest, highest and deadliest places. From penguins to paintings, sleeping bags to sextants, Inuit art to explorer diaries you will find out more about exploration, science and survival at the extreme ends of the earth at The Polar Museum on Lensfield Road. Open Tuesdays to Saturdays and bank holiday Mondays, 10am 4pm and admission is free. 4

6 EXPLORING THE CITY CENTRE SIGHTS Cambridge City Centre offers something for everyone. If its shopping you are after then you are spoilt for choice with the great mix of national retailers, independents and a thriving 7 days a week market. There is plenty for you to do with the children in Cambridge, below are a few ideas but for a more comprehensive What s On guide be sure to visit or Punting along the River Cam Punting along The Backs or up towards Granchester is great fun. You can hire your own punt or hop on board one of the many chauffeured punts if you feel like taking things a bit easier. Punt booking can be made from the Visitor Information Centre on Peas Hill or direct from the operators themselves. Visit for more. The Colleges Cambridge is famous for its University and many beautiful colleges are all within easy walking distance from the Park & Ride bus stops. The University and colleges organise many public events including concerts more information can be found at Many of the Colleges open their doors so you can enjoy visiting the magnificent buildings and beautiful gardens. A great way to see the colleges is to book yourself on an official Visit Cambridge & Beyond Guided Tour available through the city s Visitor Information Centre on Peas Hill or by calling Films, Films, Films Great for those rainy summer days and for keeping up to date with the latest blockbusters Cambridge has two cinemas within easy walking distance from the Park & Ride stops. The Arts Picturehouse is located on St Andrew s Street and if you have little ones their Toddler Time sessions are a popular choice. Screenings happen at 10am Monday to Friday and tickets cost 3 per child with accompanying adults free of charge. The Arts Picturehouse also hosts Kids Club screenings every Saturday at 11am for 2 per ticket, and family friendly matinees start at 19 per family of 4. During school holidays Vue Cinemas run their mini Mornings offer with tickets from only 2.49 per ticket for adults and children for specific early morning screenings. For more information, including film details, visit Great St Mary s Church enjoy a great view of Cambridge by climbing to the top of Great St Mary s Church, near Market Square. The tower is open weekdays from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from 12.15pm to 5pm. A family ticket (2 adults and 2 children under 16 years old) costs 12. Simply transform the blank Park & Ride bus shown overleaf using your imagination and creative skills. We are looking for a bus that showcases everything great about Summer in Cambridge. You can pop your entry into one of the collection boxes at each of the Park & Ride sites or visit the Visitor Information Centre on Peas Hill and deposit it there. Don t forget to include your name, age and either you contact or telephone number so we can get in touch if you win. Entries will be judged in the following categories: 0-5 years old 6-8 years old All Entries must be received by Monday 4th September HAVE FUN! 9 12 years old Over 12 Competition Rules - All entries must be received by Monday 4th September 2017; the judges decision is final; winners will be notified by 30th September. Entry is restricted to one entry per person; Multiple entries will be disqualified, Competition is open to UK residents only; automated entries, bulk entries or third party entries will be disqualified.
