2 This year s Waterways Symposium, taking place in Memphis, Tennessee, October 1-3, 2013, will examine the opportunities an efficient, modern waterways system can provide. Waterways Council, Inc., Informa Economics, Inc., and The Waterways Journal have teamed up again to present an informative, timely event that will address the passage of WRDA in the Senate and the path ahead in the House. As a bonus, Informa s Annual Long-Term Agriculture and Energy Transportation Outlook Conference will immediately follow the Annual Waterways Symposium. This session will look at the five-year outlook for commodities and transportation requirements for those commodities. A look at truck, rail and barge fleet supply and demand will be a key emphasis. Speakers from industry, government, academia and trade groups will address the vital impact of the rivers, waterways and ports to the domestic and world economy in terms of exports and jobs. Among the topics will be the way ahead for WRDA, what s moving on the waterways, drought, flooding and dredging impacts on shippers, operators, and ports, and freight policy from a corporate view. 5 Built in 1890 as the Grand Opera House, the Orpheum Theatre hosted vaudeville and other shows until a fire in 1923 burned it to the ground. Rebuilt in 1928, the theatre is opulently decorated with lavish tasseled brocade draperies, enormous crystal chandeliers, gilded moldings, and the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. The Orpheum is also said to be home to the ghost of Mary, who has haunted performances since The world-famous Peabody ducks march each day at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to the Peabody Memphis s lobby fountain for a swim, continuing an 80- year tradition at the hotel. Visit the nearby Mud Island Museum, where the RiverWorks Discovery-sponsored Mississippi River educational exhibit is on display. The museum will be open for WCI attendees on Tuesday morning, October 1.
