A reminder and further details will be sent out in mid November. 21, 22 (Wuxi) 23 to 27 (Chengdu) June 2016 Hamilton Mayor s Delegation to Hamilton s Chinese Sister Cities Wuxi (Jiangsu) and Chengdu ( Sichuan) Mayor Julie Hardaker accompanied by her husband Steven Perdia, Miao FAN, Justine Allen, accompanied by Murray Jeffrey (Business Development Wialus), and Walley QIU (Delegation Manager) were the members of the delegation visiting Wuxi. This delegation plus Prof Neil Quigley (Vice-Chancellor Waikato University), Mark Flowers (CEO of Wintec), Stuart Gordon ( CEO Waikato Innovation Park), Parekawhia McLean (CEO Waikato Tainui), and Dr Kerst Stelwagen (Managing Director Waikato Innovation Park, who was accompanying Stuart Gordon) were the members of the delegation visiting Chengdu. Whilst in Wuxi the delegation also visited the Maori carved gateway gifted by Hamilton City at the time of Mayor Margaret Evans. Whilst in Chengdu the delegation visited the Panda Breeding Research Station and the opening of the new New Zealand Consulate-General office in Chengdu. 3 Friday 1 July 2016 Mayor s Music Matinee to celebrate 30th Anniversary of Hamilton s sister city signing with Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. This lunchtime concert in the Hamilton Civic Reception Lounge featured two performers CHEN Xiyao (Yao) (Hamilton Branch member) and ZHANG Yi (Johnny) both from The New Zealand School of Traditional Chinese Music and Performing Arts. 4 Annual Kathleen Hall Memorial Fundraising Dinner Sunday 3 July 2016 Our Annual Kathleen Hall Memorial Fundraising Dinner was held at Victor s Place Chinese Restaurant at 6pm. Over 50 people attended the function and all enjoyed the beautiful food and the fun auction. $ was raised at this event with our grateful thanks to all who attended and participated.

5 China 1979 A New Dawn - Photo Exhibition Friday 8 July 2016 Exclusive photographs taken by Geoff Steven when travelling in China with Rewi Alley. Geoff was Head of Productions of NZ largest TV Networks and has produced and directed a number of International TV Documentaries as well as two films (Strata, and Skin Deep). He produced the series Rewi Alley in China. Geoff is founder of Our Place World Heritage, a New Zealand Company working with UNESCO to document sites of cultural significance around the globe. Geoff and his team of 20 photographers have captured over 360 world heritage sites in more than 90 countries. The Exhibition was to open at Waikato Museum in Hamilton on Saturday 9th July, but Geoff kindly arranged a preview for us on the Friday at 3pm. To a captivated audience of over 30 Geoff walked around the gallery and discussed his tour with Rewi. Most photos brought back poignant memories to most attending, either because of the particular site for the photo, or other memories associated with the subject of the photo. Some places had not changed at all in 35 years and some had quite disappeared. Particular thanks to George Andrews and Margaret Evans for supporting the holding of the exhibition in Hamilton, and to Geoff for personally meeting with us and giving us such an interesting introduction to the photos. Hoyt s Cinema Metro Friday 8 July 2016 Showing of the Chinese (Hong Kong) movie Cold War 2 organised by Hamilton Chinese Association. Nine of us attended this exciting movie after viewing the A New Dawn exhibition earlier in the day. Thank you HCSA for organising the showing of this movie.

6 Ma Jiang (Mah Jong) afternoon Sunday 24 July 2016 Ma Jiang (Mah Jong) Afternoon was held at Waikato Chinese Community Centre, 47 Lewis Street. Over 20 attended from old guns (Miao s mother WANG Zhen and her father FAN Guojun) to people who had not played before at all. Under the guidance of Sid Lim we had a fun afternoon of learning and playing, and afternoon tea. The afternoon was such a success.

7 Visit of Wuxi Youth Ambassadors. Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 July 2016 The Wuxi Education International Centre has been working on the organisation of Wuxi future Ambassador Programme for teenagers to let Wuxi teenagers see the world, not just around where they grew up. The programme aims to develop teenagers comprehensive characters and to promote their abilities in social intercourse, team cooperation and creativity. Covering the area of Wuxi City, after three rounds of competition, ten students were finally chosen (out of some 10,000 competitors) for the programme to go to New Zealand for a one week friendly exchange activity. All the chosen ones are really talented in all aspects, especially in art. Some of them can sing, dance, some have expertise in musical instruments such as erhu, hulusi, and piano. Some of the students are talented painters in calligraphy, watercolour and sand painting. The group of thirteen lead by Madame GUO Liya arrived in Hamilton on Tuesday at 10.30am for a civic reception hosted by Deputy Mayor Gordon Chesterman. After lunch the group visited Hamilton Gardens and Waikato Tainui College at Hopahopa. On the Wednesday the group attended some classes and participated in a concert at Hillcrest High School, and left after lunch to visit Rotorua. The self-confidence and spoken English abilities of these talented teenagers made them very worthy Youth Ambassadors indeed. Deputy Mayor s Civic Reception. 9 Free Public Talk Monday 15 August 2016 Visiting Professor Emeritus E. N. Anderson from the University of California, Riverside, gave a public address on the topic of 'China's Food and Environment' at the Hamilton Gardens Exhibition Hall on Monday 15th August at 5.30pm. Prof Anderson talked about China's perpetual efforts to minimise resource use in the task of maximising food production. Because China has such a lengthy human history, has such a vast population, and has so much land area that cannot support food production, the world looks to China for lessons in how this issue can be managed globally. However, obtaining reliable data on both food production and environmental effects in China sometimes makes conclusions difficult to draw. 12 88 Devonport Chinese Restaurant 88 Devonport Chinese Restaurant in Tauranga CBD has been taken over and revamped by two of our Branch members Alan and Helen Lin. This restaurant is situated at 88 Devonport Road (ph ) in the centre of Tauranga City shopping area and serves Hong Kong style Yum Cha and Chinese food. Branch members Shu and Phee Lim, Kam and Helen Sam, and Ian and Shirley Howat were invited to a Yum Cha lunch there recently - we were all very impressed with the variety and quality of their Yum Cha food. The restaurant has seating for 60 diners. Alan and Helen had formerly owned Kwangchow Restaurant (now owned by Alan s sister) in Mount Maunganui. We are planning a Branch Yum Cha lunch at 88 Devonport early next year.
