2 President s Report As Mayor of the City of Launceston and St GilesPresident, it is my pleasure to thank and congratulate the Directors, Management and Staff of St Giles on another year of high achievement. I also thank the many volunteers and supporters who give so generously to St Giles. This generosity enables St Giles to support many thousands of Tasmanians living with a disability. On behalf of the City of Launceston, I offer St Giles support and encouragement to build on your achievements in the year ahead. Albert van Zetten President, Mayor of Launceston Chairman and Chief Executive Report The recent economic downturn has impacted on many individuals and organisations including St Giles. Robert Pearce Chairman Michael Sertori Chief ExecutivE For the first time in many years we have incurred a deficit. Following a review of our operations and through careful management we now forecast a break-even position for the year ahead. This improvement is achieved without impact on service delivery. We are delighted to enjoy the ongoing commitment of the State and Federal Governments. We are particularly grateful to our wonderful sponsors and donors who maintain their strong support. This support has inspired our achievements over the past twelve months, highlighted as follows: 420,000 hours of service delivered across Tasmania; 2,500 adults and children assisted; 5,000 parents assisted; New children s accessible playground opened in Launceston; New Federal Government funding secured for our Early Years Intervention program; Life s setbacks are only hurdles that once conquered make the journey more rewarding New Music Therapy program introduced; Anonymous State Government funding secured for our state-wide Seating Clinic service; Appointed by the State Government to manage the Southern Children s Allied Health Service. Winner of the 2008 CGU/Launceston Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award. We congratulate our magnificent employees for their dedication and hard work. We thank our wonderful band of volunteers and our generous donors and supporters. 5 WHATEVER IT TAKES... On the swings... Under the watchful eye of support worker Trudi, 11-year-old Luke enjoys the Liberty Swing in the respite playground. He accesses St Giles in-home and centrebased respite on a weekly basis to give Mum and Dad a well-earned rest....is St Giles driving philosophy in responding to the needs of Tasmanian Children and Adults living with a disability. We are generously funded by State and Federal Governments who meet 70% of the cost of our activities. To meet the needs of a growing demand for services, St Giles relies on the generosity of organisations, individuals and the Tasmanian Community to work with us to make a positive difference. Our busy Fundraising program of events, raffles, appeals and partnerships is warmly embraced by the Tasmanian Community. A highlight was our Open Day in September last year offering the Community the opportunity to look over our facilities and meet with staff. It was also a chance for us to thank our supporters in person. We at St Giles were honoured to receive the CGU Launceston Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards 2008 in the category Not for Profit, an award recognising our contribution to the community. Once again, The Examiner Newspaper worked with us to run the St Giles Examiner Appeal, raising funds to purchase client equipment. None of our activities would be possible without the generosity of our sponsors, our wonderful volunteers and the many organisations and individuals who support our activities. St Giles is very proud to be a part of a caring community who work with us to ensure we deliver on our promise to Tasmanian children and adults living with a disability. test driving the new wheels... The scholarship is offered to encourage specialisation in paediatric therapy at St Giles and provides assistance, support and employment at St Giles. The 2008 winner was Physiotherapist, Karen Doyle.
