1 THE GANDHI CENTRE THE HAGUE Parkstraat 99 (1st floor), 2514 JH DEN HAAG The Gandhi Centre is the Cultural wing of Embassy of India in The Hague. It aims to encourage and promote Indian knowledge and culture within The Netherlands by organizing regular events showcasing various cultural art forms of India such as music, dance and cinema. The centre also organizes regular talks on different aspects of India from time to time. The facilities at the Gandhi Centre are available to all for performances, conducting lectures and workshops.

2 Upcoming Events Saturday, 12 th May 2018 Mother s Day Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. 3 Friday, 18 th May 2018 Prof. Muthuswamy Balasubramaniam is Mridangam Maestro and retired principal of RLV College of Music and fine arts, Thiruvananthapuram. He started performing at the age of 13 years and has accompanied all leading Indian classical music stalwarts. He has performed in several Jazz festivals across Europe, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations had appointed him as Mridangam teacher cum performer in Jawahar Lal Nehru Indian Cultural Centre, Jakarta, Indonesia. He is also honorary member in various cultural organizations. He will be presenting a special duet performance with Tabla Player Mr Heiko Dijker, an Amsterdam based Tabla Player and composer. 4 Friday, 25 th May 2018 Sitar Concert A Journey into Space By Imran Khan Sitar Heiko Dijker - Tabla Walk In : 16 30hrs Program : 17 00hrs 1800hrs Imran Khan belongs to the famous lineage of the Sikar Gharana School of music that has given many stalwarts to Indian classical music. Born on 4th June 1983, at Jodhpur, he is the ninth generation of Gharana. He started his training in Sitar from the age of 6 years under his grandfather Ustad Gulab Khan Sahab, who is both acknowledged Sarangi player and vocalist of his time, and from his father Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan Sahab, who is also famous Sitar Player and A grade staff artist at ALL INDIA Radio jodhpur in Rajasthan. He gave his first solo performance at the age of 12 in youth festival of All India Radio. He has given his performance in countries like Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Laos etc. The program will be held in the auditorium of The Gandhi Centre

5 Regular Classes The Gandhi Centre conducts Yoga, Hindi and Tabla classes. These classes are open to everyone and are FREE of charge. The classes are designed to cater to all age groups and levels, from beginners to advanced. Yoga Class at The Gandhi Centre YOGA Mr Amit Khanna is a Yoga Therapist and Expert who has more than 8 years of experience in Yoga therapy. He holds degrees in Physiotherapy and Yoga and is an expert in imparting and designing yoga therapy protocol based on various medical conditions and life style disorders. Yoga is a science and art of healthy living with origins in ancient India. It is a potent stress management tool and its practice increases immunity and contributes to overall personality development. Hindi Hindi Class at The Gandhi Centre Dr. Kanta Rani is an educationist and an enthusiastic teacher of Hindi. She has a Masters in Hindi, PhD in education and over 25 years of teaching experience. She comes with rich experience in promoting Hindi to non-hindi speakers having taught Hindi in ICC Suriname and written 3 textbooks and 1 conversation book on Hindi. Hindi is one of the official languages of India and is a descendant of the ancient Indian language Sanskrit. It is widely used in both India and Suriname. The Gandhi Centre conducts regular classes for different levels offering a full linguistic immersion.

6 TABLAA Tabla at The Gandhi Centre is taught by internationally acclaimed Heiko Dijker, who received years of traditional training from grandmaster Faiyaz Khan in India. 7 Overview of events organized by the Embassy during April 2018 Ambedkar Jayanti and Dhrupad Singing 14 th April 2018 Ambedkar Jayanti was celebrated in The Gandhi Centre, Embassy of India on April 14, The program began with lecture on topic The Ideas and Contribution of Dr B R Ambedkar by Prof Pralay Kanungo, ICCR India Chair at Leiden University. It was followed by Dhrupad Singing performance by Ms Meghana Sardar and screening of short film on the life of Dr B R Ambedkar. Bhangra Workshop 21 st April 2018

8 A Bhangra Workshop and performance was held at the Gandhi Centre on 21 st April 2018 by Ms Asses Chadha, founder and director of Nachanshah Dance School, New Delhi. Bollywood on a Boat 27 th April 2018 Bollywood on a Boat,a novel initiative to promote tourism to India launched in Amsterdam on King s Day 27 th April 2018, was a huge success with around 50,000 revellers in boats and on the banks of the Canals enjoying the performances. The boat with the dancers and Dhol players sailed through the three main canals of Amsterdam- Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht covering more than 100 km for over five hours. It was an initiative of the Embassy of India in The Hague in association with India Tourism and Jet Airways, the Boat was decked with banners of Incredible India and Jet Airways on the two sides and upcoming International Yoga Day celebrations on the stern.the boat evinced great interest of the crowds who were captivated by the colourful performances. Dancers from the Netherlands Marathi Mandal staged Dhol, Lavani, Bihu, Bhangra and Ghoomar (folk dances from different parts of India) while members of the Bollylicious Troupe showcased Bollywood dances on the boat.
